At least one rival faith stands or falls on the exile of God-forsaken wandering Jews, and if it allows modern Israel to survive it will not allow it to thrive. What could be more in a cleric’s face than Israel thriving? So it is that Archbishop for life Desmond Tutu tells the nation of interlopers and occupiers and chutzpahdiks what God thinks of such effrontery.

We that have not Tutu’s gift to speak for God may speak for ungodly anti-Zionists, just a mite less doctrinaire than offended clerics. Bible narrative, insist the temporal Israel-haters, is only Zionism’s tardy excuse for brutally expelling a native people. Even if the Creator spoke with Moses three thousand years ago at Sinai, it was not to give liberated Hebrew slaves carte blanche to thieve, occupy and lord it over hapless people. On the contrary.
I listen to a pro-boycott Jewish professor remind Israelis about God’s stern warning to be kind to strangers, as the Ivri in Egypt were strangers, in their midst. A queer time or place, to my mind, for bible thumping after the professor and others spend an afternoon regaling Israelis for being strangers in Palestine. In that case, you’d think, why not dress down the Palestinian natives? Remind them to be kind to strangers in their midst. Jew or Arab: how difficult can it be to give one or the other favoured stranger status and keep to it?

SnyderTalk Comment: The short answer to the question is “no!” People who fail to see the spiritual war raging all around us will never understand what is taking place. Sometimes, even believers have trouble understanding reality because of disinformation and half-truths that politicians toss out so casually and “authoritatively”.
For example, think about diehard Obama supporters who positively must turn a blind eye to his policies relating to murder on demand without constraint, legitimizing homosexuality, and the “Palestinian” cause. Those policies are so far removed from Yahweh’s plan that believers have to wonder when Obama supporters pontificate about him.
I’ll be blunt. I don’t think you can read the Bible, believe it, and then say that you support Obama’s policies or the people that he has appointed to do his bidding. That’s not a racist statement even though diehard Obama supporters believe that it’s racist not to endorse everything that this incompetent president has done. There isn’t a racist bone in my body. It’s not a political statement, either. It’s a factual statement that’s based on what the Bible says and on mountains of hard evidence.
This is the bottom line: our attitudes toward Jewish people and Israel tell us a great deal about our belief in Yahweh. Chapter 7 in my book If You Voted for Obama in 2008 to Prove You’re Not a Racist, You Need to Vote for Someone Else in 2012 to Prove You’re Not an Idiot is titled “You Can’t be Pro-Obama and Pro-Israel.” That’s a factual statement as well. If you read the book, you’ll see that it is based on Scripture and hard evidence.
I fear for people who say that they believe the Bible and then support people for political office who stand for the exact opposite of the principles that are spelled out so clearly in it. It is a frightful thing to take sides against Yahweh. He isn’t a politician, and He doesn’t lie. Yahweh is the Supreme Sovereign and the Judge. People who think that He doesn’t exist won’t understand the importance of those statements until they meet Him Face-to-face, and one day all of us will. Pretending to have faith in Yahweh is the same thing as not having faith in Him. Interestingly, the literal meaning of the Name “Yahweh” is “I Exist” or “I Am”.

Rabbi Menachem Creditor: I’m Done Apologizing for Israel— …So I’m a progressive US faith leader. I’m a Zionist in Berkeley, CA. I’m a Jew in the world, worried for my family. So here is my response to those criticizing Israel this week. To those who suggest that Prime Minister Netanyahu is over-reacting to the missiles, I offer this response which I have now shared regularly at campus and communal conversations: Israel is treating wounded Palestinians during this conflict, risking Israeli lives in surgical strikes to destroy weapons-smuggling tunnels created with building materials Israel allowed into Gaza for infrastructure projects to benefit Palestinian society. Just for a moment, consider the deaths that would result from Israel wishing harm on Palestinian civilians. In just the last 48 hours, Israel has allowed over 10 tons of goods into Gaza. During the past weeks, Israel has agreed to two humanitarian cease-fires. In the first hours of those ceasefires, Hamas rained down over 70 missiles onto Israel civilians. I ask: What do Israel’s enraged critics truly desire? How is it possible to hear indignant claims of human rights violations in the context of Syrians slaughtered by the hundreds of thousands, state-sanctioned terrorism around the globe, and young immigrants treated like chattel by the US and other? Israel is doing its best, sacrificing its own children to preserve the lives of Palestinians.
SnyderTalk Comment: The rabbi is beginning to see the light where Israel is concerned, but his notions of “progressivism” and “morality” are way off the mark. He’s conflicted and he doesn’t even know it. Keep in mind, though, that he is writing for an audience of kneejerk liberals.
Hilik Bar: How Many Israelis Must Die Before We Are “Allowed” to Defend Them?—Hamas rockets are aimed at Israel’s civilian population, and are unprovoked, sent with murderous intent. Since the beginning of Operation Protective Edge, Hamas has fired over 1,500 rockets into Israel. Israel’s operation, meanwhile, is dedicated solely to removing the capacity of Hamas to fire missiles into Israeli population centers and dismantling its terror tunnels. To discuss the concept of proportionality, one must offset the number of deaths against the aims of the operation. In the context of putting a stop to intolerable, hourly murder attempts against an entire population, Israel’s campaign is perfectly understandable. One wonders how the UK would react if a terror group overtook the Isle of Man and began raining missiles down on Britain.
Telegraph-UK Editorial: A Bloody Conflict in Gaza, But Israel Is Not to Blame—The Israel Defense Forces Monday issued a mocked-up picture of the Houses of Parliament with missiles raining down on the building, alongside the words: “What would you do?” It is a good question. Indeed, as the IDF continues its offensive in Gaza, it is one that Israel’s critics need to answer – but can’t. In similar circumstances, what would we do to protect our families and territory?
Anne Bayefsky: Ban Ki-moon’s Shameful Message in Israel’s Hour of Need—UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has condemned Israeli military strikes in the Sejaiya neighborhood in Gaza: “I condemn this atrocious action. Israel must exercise maximum restraint and do far more to protect civilians.” Yet he said nothing about any “atrocious action” by Hamas. He also made no demand that Hamas “restrain” itself from fulfilling its goal of obliterating Israel. For the UN, no move that Israel makes, short of surrender to the Palestinian mob, will ever be sufficient.
Alex Safian: Are Israeli Actions in Gaza “Disproportionate”?—Myth: Because far more Gaza residents than Israelis have been killed, the Israeli actions are “disproportionate.” Fact: In the Pacific Theatre in World War II, over 2.7 million Japanese were killed, including 580,000 civilians, as against 106,000 Americans. Does it follow that Japan was in the right and America was in the wrong? Just having more dead on your side does not make you right. Proportionality in the Law of War has nothing to do with the relative number of casualties on the two sides. If a target has high military value, then it can be attacked even if there will be some civilian casualties in doing so. By this measure, Israel’s efforts to destroy missiles before they can be fired at Israeli civilians, even if that places Palestinian civilians at risk, seems to conform perfectly to the Laws of War. There is no requirement that Israel place the lives of its own citizens in danger to protect the lives of Palestinian civilians.
Benjamin Wallace-Wells: ‘Telegenically Dead Palestinians’: Why Israel Is Losing the American Media War—In many ways, the story of this month’s eruption of violence in Israel and Palestine has been depressingly familiar. But in one interesting way it has been a little bit different from the beginning: American audiences are seeing the story of the conflict, perhaps more than ever before, through Palestinian eyes. That this is the case is probably something of an accident. But after Israeli extremists kidnapped and murdered a Palestinian kid named Mohammed Abu Khdeir, apparently in retribution for the earlier murder of three Israeli teenagers, police detained and beat up his cousin, Tariq Abu Khdeir, a 15-year old Palestinian-American from Tampa, vacationing with his family. It is common for television news broadcasts to carry sympathetic stories of a local American kid tragically caught up in Middle Eastern violence. It is not so common for that kid to be Palestinian. Soon the networks were broadcasting sympathetic interviews with Tariq Abu Khdeir’s angry mother. “The Palestinians live like this every day,” Suha Abu Khdeir told ABC. “They kind of say, okay, we’ll deal with it. But us, as Americans, it’s just, it’s not human.”
Avi Issacharoff: Hamas Sees Itself as the Victor—Due to the high death toll among IDF soldiers and the devastating blow to the Palestinian civilian population, Hamas sees itself as the victor. The perpetuated myth of a massacre in Sejaiya has brought the organization an unprecedented degree of support among the Palestinians, especially in the West Bank. However, the myth of that “massacre” has also created panic among the Gazan public. The driving emotion among the residents of Gaza is one of mass hysteria. This means that during the next operation in Sejaiya, or in any other neighborhood, the IDF will likely encounter far fewer civilians. The majority of Gaza residents in combat zones will from now on flee for their lives – heeding the IDF’s warnings and not Hamas’ calls to stay.
Efraim Inbar and Eitan Shamir: Mowing the Grass in Gaza to Degrade Enemy Capabilities—Hamas left Israel’s government no choice but to order the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) to start a land incursion. Israel’s goal continues to be the establishment of a reality in which Israeli residents can live in safety without constant indiscriminate terror. Calls for reaching a “political solution” are totally unrealistic. Hamas, Islamic Jihad and Salafist groups see Israel as a theological aberration, and despite reluctant acceptance of temporary cease-fires, reject any diplomatic course of action intended to solve the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. The fanatic commitment of these militias to a radical ideology and to a long-term strategy of violent resistance turn the situation into an intractable conflict. Nevertheless, employing military force is useful. Hamas needs to be punished for its aggressive behavior and reminded of the cost it must pay for continuing the violence against Israel. Important periods of quiet are attainable by military action, and this is what explains Israel’s current offensive.
Alan M. Dershowitz: Has Hamas ended the prospects for a two state solution?— Hamas’s decision to fire rockets in the direction of Ben Gurion Airport may well have ended any real prospect of a two-state solution. Whether the regulators and airlines that have stopped flights to and from Israel are right or wrong, this stoppage cannot possibly be tolerated by a democratic country that relies so heavily on tourism and international travel. It is of course a war crime to target an international civilian airport, as Hamas has clearly done. Israel has every right to keep that airport open, employing all reasonable military means at its disposal. Since Hamas fires its rockets from densely populated civilian areas, there will be more Palestinian civilian deaths.
SnyderTalk Comment: The so-called “two-state solution” is an idea whose time has come and gone. It never made any sense, but now thinking people are beginning to realize it.
Michael B. Oren: A Gaza Solution: Demilitarization—The key to ending the current battle between Hamas and Israel – and preventing more fighting in the future – is the demilitarization of Gaza. Simply put, Hamas without rockets is not the same Hamas. The Obama administration supports the establishment of a demilitarized Palestinian state. President Obama provided the most recent precedent for demilitarizing Gaza: the removal of chemical weapons from Syria. The U.S. must unite with international and regional governments to convince Hamas that it has no choice but to demilitarize. Still, Hamas is sure to cling bitterly to its rockets. And silencing the rocket fire may require reoccupying most of Gaza. That is why Israel must be allowed to maintain – and, if necessary, escalate – its pressure on Hamas.

SnyderTalk Comment: “Siege”? Hamas has been engaged in open war with Israel since Day One. Allowing them to import weapons without constraint is ridiculous. We know for a fact that Hamas uses the money that they receive to build tunnels, buy weapons, and support the lifestyles of Hamas leaders. Lifting the “siege” would allow even more of those things, so it is a really bad idea from Israel’s perspective. I like this idea better: Mashaal should be charged as a war criminal and tried. If he is convicted, he should be executed. That should be a concession for any cease-fire.
