Caroline Glick—How to win in Gaza:
Israel deployed ground forces in Gaza Thursday night both because Hamas’s terror tunnels into Israel have become an unacceptable threat, and because it had to break the deadlock that had developed between it and Hamas.
Until the ground invasion, Israel and Hamas were in a holding pattern. Hamas would not accept a ceasefire deal because Egypt’s offers provided the Iranian sponsored, Muslim Brotherhood terror army with no discernible achievements. And absent such achievements, Hamas prefers to keep fighting. Israel for its part is unwilling to make any concessions to Hamas in exchange for its cessation of its criminal terror war that targets innocent civilians in Israel as a matter of course.
As Hamas sees things, it has three ways of winning.
First, if Israel had agreed to ceasefire terms that left Hamas better off than it was when it started its newest round of indiscriminate missile attacks against Israeli civilian targets, then it could have declared victory.
Hamas’s terms for a ceasefire included, among other things, an open border with Egypt, egress to the sea, open access to the border zone with Israel, an airport, a sea port, and the release of terrorists from Israeli prisons. Obviously, if Israel agreed to even a few of these terms, its agreement would have constituted a strategic victory for Hamas.

SnyderTalk Comment: Israel has a serious problem. I’m assuming that Obama really cares. Although he says he does, I fear that he may be just parroting speeches. The president may not know it yet, but we have a problem, too. This is one of those moments when it would be great to know that Obama was telling the truth. I’m skeptical and I suspect that many others are unsure as well including PM Netanyahu. That’s not comforting. The truth means a great deal to me, but it means much more to Yahweh especially where Israel is concerned.

Khaled Abu Toameh: Palestinians: The Arabs Betrayed Us—Again— Since 1948, the Arab countries and government have been paying mostly lip service to the Palestinians. “They have money and oil, but don’t care about the Palestinians, even though we are Arabs and Muslims like them. What a Saudi or Qatari sheikh spends in one night in London, Paris or Las Vegas could solve the problem of tens of thousands of Palestinians.” — Abdel Bari Atwan, Palestinian editor. “Some Arabs were hoping that Israel would rid them of Hamas.” — Ashraf Salameh, Gaza City. “Some of the Arab regimes are interested in getting rid of the resistance in order to remove the burden of the Palestinian cause, which threatens the stability of their regimes.” — Mustafa al-Sawwaf, Palestinian political analyst. “Most Arabs are busy these days with bloody battles waged by their leaders, who are struggling to survive. These battles are raging in Yemen, Syria, Iraq, Egypt, Libya and the Palestinian Authority.” — Mohammed al-Musafer, columnist. “The Arab leaders don’t know what they want from the Gaza Strip. They don’t even know what they want from Israel.” — Yusef Rizka, Hamas official.
Michael Herzog: Only a Ground Operation in Gaza Can Effectively Deal with Hamas—Hamas and other Palestinian armed groups in Gaza have fired some 1,400 rockets over almost all of Israel, driving millions into bomb shelters. For ten days Israel responded with air strikes. However, the rockets have continued unabated. Only a ground operation can effectively deal with Hamas’ remaining military capabilities.
Avi Dichter: Put an End to Terrorism Roulette—There is no Iron Dome against the terror tunnels. They can’t be intercepted. So the ground incursion into Gaza is both appropriate and justified. Operation Protective Edge must not only destroy the tunnels, but also arrest terrorists and collect intelligence, demolish structures used by Hamas leaders and members, eliminate terrorist hotbeds, weapons-making operations and hiding places, and more. In 2002, during the Second Intifada, the citizens of Israel woke up to suicide bombings every day until Operation Defensive Shield smashed terrorism in Judea-Samaria [the West Bank]. There is no question that the residents of southern Israel cannot be left to face terrorism from Gaza. For 13 years, they’ve woken up and lived their lives playing Russian roulette. The tunnels are dug deep beneath Gaza and reach Israeli territory with one goal – to allow large terrorist forces to execute a surprise attack, murdering Israelis and then vanishing back into the Strip with civilians or soldiers as hostages.
Bruce Thornton: The Incoherent Excuses for Hating Israel— Israel’s military operation to degrade Hamas’ ability to rain rockets down on Israeli cities has stirred up the usual noisy and nasty protests in Europe. We need not dwell on demonstrations by Muslim immigrants, whose genocidal Jew-hatred has been an Islamic tradition for 14 centuries. More revealing is the hatred of Israel by so many Europeans, ranging from leftover leftists and idealizers of the dark-skinned “other,” to far-right xenophobes and morally addled Christians. Whatever its origins, one thing their bitter hatred of Israel does not have is any foundation in coherent principle.
Irfan Al-Alawi: Sunni Muslims Must Reject ISIS “Caliphate”—”Abu Bakr Al-Baghdadi” is Abu Du’a, a follower of the late Osama Bin Laden. By adding the name “Al-Qurayshi” in his current alias, he is also seeking to affirm descent from Muhammad. The allegation of theological sovereignty over all Sunnis extends to Indonesia and Morocco. The idea that the borders between Syria and Iraq will be dissolved by the new “caliphate” defies all Islamic theology and history. As the Qur’an states, “Allah “made the nations and tribes different.” (49:13) Syria and Iraq have been distinct for millennia. The “Islamic State” seeks to obliterate these diverse identities by expelling or killing all Shias and Sunni Sufis. And it does not invoke the Ottoman caliphate in its propaganda, demonstrating decisively the fake nature of the “Islamic State.” A caliphate is obsolete and the “Islamic State” is totalitarian. All Sunnis need to repudiate them soundly, even by force of arms.
Rabbi Benjamin Blech: Hamas’s Secret Weapon— Much is made of Hamas’s arsenal of weaponry. There appear to be tens of thousands of missiles, untold numbers of tunnels and caches of armaments meant to achieve their charter’s goal of the destruction of Israel and the murder of its inhabitants. Yet these are not Hamas’s most powerful weapon. The secret weapon of Hamas has an ancient history. Its source is biblical. And it has its roots in the very first murder of record. The Torah tells us that at mankind’s very beginning rivalry between brothers escalated to killing. The text does not make clear what motivated Cain to kill Abel. The Midrash suggests that he felt the world simply wasn’t big enough for both of them. Coexistence was impossible. And so one day Cain pounced. He was certain that the element of surprise would allow him to easily accomplish his goal. But that didn’t happen.
Tony Badran: Israel Assisting Arab National Security Against Iran—Hamas’ military activity is dependent on Tehran’s backing and is in line with Iranian interests. Gaza represents the southern front – Lebanon being the northern counterpart – of an Iranian strategy to deploy long-range rockets and missiles on Israel’s borders capable of targeting all of its cities. Sure enough, Iranian Revolutionary Guards officials emphasized on Monday how Gaza demonstrated that all of Israel was now within range of the rockets they supply. The deterrence that Israel established in Lebanon in 2006 is what it is trying to recreate in Gaza, in cooperation with Egypt. Insofar as Israel intercepts destabilizing Iranian weapons, or strikes them before entering Lebanon or Egypt, Israel is acting as a guarantor of Arab national security in the eastern Mediterranean.
Soeren Kern: EU Leaders Deeply Divided Over Russia—European elites, who take pride in viewing the EU as a “postmodern” superpower, have long argued that military hard-power is illegitimate in the 21st century. Unfortunately for Europe, Russia (along with China and Iran) has not embraced the EU’s fantastical soft-power worldview, in which “climate change” is now said to pose the greatest threat to European security. For its part, the European Commission, the EU’s administrative branch, which never misses an opportunity to boycott institutions in Israel, has issued only a standard statement on the shooting down of MH17 in Ukraine, which reads: “The European Union will continue to follow this issue very closely.” The EU has made only half-hearted attempts to develop alternatives to its dependency on Russian oil and gas.
Moshe Phillips and Benyamin Korn: Seventh Lesson of the Gaza War: We Must Demilitarize Gaza— A simple cease-fire in Gaza would give Hamas time to re-arm and renew its terrorist activities. The demilitarization of Gaza would put an end to Hamas’s terrorist activities. Which goal makes more sense? President Barack Obama and Secretary of State John Kerry have been working hard to achieve a cease-fire between Israel and Hamas. This effort is shortsighted – and worse. A simple cease-fire would be a de-facto victory for Hamas. It would give Hamas the time and breathing space it needs to smuggle in more weapons, repair its terror tunnels, and launch new terror attacks on Israel. It would live to fight another day.
SnyderTalk Comment: Demilitarization is a good first step, but that’s all. There comes a time when you have to accept the fact that the existence of Hamas is a threat to Israel, the Middle East region, and the world—a time when you have to quit pretending that Hamas has any redeeming value. It’s a terrorist organization, a crime syndicate that should be eliminated. Hamas makes the Ku Klux Klan look benevolent, and its leaders make David Duke and people like him look like statesmen. When Arab leaders let it be known that they hope Israel solves their “Hamas problem”, it’s time for Western leaders to listen up.

SnyderTalk Comment: Western journalists who are casually throwing around the word “proportionality” have no understanding of that term’s clear-cut meaning in war—especially in this war since Hamas is using human shields to beef up the death toll and openly admitting it. The journalists’ goal is to make Israel look bad in the eyes of the world, and their naïve and misguided sense of right and wrong is costing Gazans their lives.
Hamas leaders eagerly place civilians in harm’s way. Life means nothing to them, or I should say that other people’s lives mean nothing to them. The next time you see pictures of so-called “Israeli brutality,” remember that those people were put there for a reason—so that imbecilic Western journalists can see and photograph them dead or dying.
The journalists can’t claim ignorance. They are complicit in those deaths, and they are just as much a part of the Hamas death cult as its leaders are. They are indispensible cogs in Hamas’ wheel of carnage.

SnyderTalk Comment: In this instance “surely die” probably means “surely die in your sins”. Everybody dies. That’s been true since Adam and Eve, but the death to which Yahweh was referring here was different, and I think eternal. There is a point of no return. Abimelech had just reached it, and Yahweh gave him a warning. Abimelech knew exactly what he had to do and he did the right thing. Many don’t. Read His Name is Yahweh.
