Christian Obstinence is Retarding Progress

If you are a Bible-believing Christian and you care about Israel and the Jewish people, you need to read a recent blog post by James Trimm, a Jewish man who was raised in Rabbinic Judaism, but he accepted Yeshua as the Jewish Messiah of Judaism about 30 years ago.  The title of his blog post is “Orthodox Jewish Scholar’s Profound Words about Yeshua”.  In it, he explains that there is a large and growing group of orthodox Jews including orthodox rabbis who know that Yeshua is the true Messiah, but they are unwilling to openly declare their belief because they do not want to align themselves with the “Torahless ‘Jesus’ that Christendom has adopted from pagan sources.”

According to Trimm,

Beginning in the late 90’s I began reporting that a great number of Orthodox Jews (even Rabbis) already know that Yeshua is the true and only Messiah and that some of them have even confided this fact to me. I stated then that they had no intention of disclosing this fact because they believed it would unite them with an anti-Torah Christianity which is overflowing with pagan customs and practices, and a disdain for the Torah which is seen as “bondage”. I received a lot of skepticism at the time, and then Rabbi Yizachak Kaduri made arrangements to reveal his belief in Yeshua as the Messiah one year after his death.

In 2012 Orthodox Jewish Rabbi Shmuley Boteach published the book Kosher Jesus, which, while not accepting Yeshua as the Messiah, takes a non-hostile approach to Yeshua, seeking to reclaim Yeshua as a Jewish sage of the Second Temple Era.

Now a group of Orthodox Rabbinic Jews are working toward a retrial of Yeshua before this Rabbinic Sanhedrin.  Its being called The Official Jesus Anathema Removal Project (http://www.redeemzion.com )  Ariel Cohen Alloro, an Orthodox Jewish priest is building a team to bring a formal petition to the Rabbinic Sanhedrin in Jerusalem, Israel.  This attempt at a retrial of Yeshua is being undertaken by Orthodox Rabbinic Jews who believe that Yeshua was falsely accused.

Just this last year Orthodox Jewish scholar Daniel Boyarin wrote a book “The Jewish Gospels; The Story of the Jewish Christ”.  This book also takes a non-hostile approach to Yeshua and his original Jewish followers.  Daniel Boyarin is not only a noted historian of religion, he has also been called “one of the two or three greatest rabbinic scholars in the world.”  He holds dual United States and Israeli citizenship. Trained as a Talmudic scholar, in 1990 he was appointed Professor of Talmudic Culture, Departments of Near Eastern Studies and Rhetoric, University of California, Berkeley, a post which he still holds.

Boyarin opens his book with some very interesting words:

If there is one thing that Christians know about their religion, it is that it’s not Judaism.  If there’s one thing Jews know about their faith, it is that it’s not Christianity. If there is one thing that both groups know about this “double not,” it’s that Christians believe in the Trinity and the incarnation of Christ (the Greek word for Messiah) and that Jews don’t, that Jews keep kosher and Christians don’t.

If only things were that simple.  In this book, I’m going to tell a very different story, a story of a time when Jews and Christians were much more mixed up with each other than they are now, when there were many Jews who believed in something quite like the Father and the Son and even in something like the incarnation of the Son in the Messiah, and when followers of Jesus kept kosher as Jews, and accordingly a time in which the difference between Judaism and Christianity just didn’t exist as it does now….

While by now almost everyone, Christian and non-Christian, is happy enough to refer to Jesus, the human, as a Jew, I want to go a step beyond that. I wish us to see that Christ too–the divine Messiah–is a Jew. Christology, or the early ideas about Christ, is also a Jewish discourse and not–until much later–an anti-Jewish discourse at all. Many Israelites at the time of Jesus were expecting a Messiah who would be divine and come to earth in the form of a human. Thus the basic underlying thoughts from which both the Trinity and the incarnation grew are there in the very world into which Jesus was born and in which he was first written about in the Gospels of Mark and John (1-2).

(Daniel Boyarin, The Jewish Gospels; The Story of the Jewish Christ; 2012, p. 1, 5-6)

Almost 20 years ago, I learned about the orthodox rabbis in Israel who know that Yeshua is the promised Messiah, and I have been waiting and hoping for their announcement ever since.  Candidly, I don’t think the logic for delaying the release of their announcement is sound, but I also realize that they are correct.  Far too many Christians look with disdain upon other Christians who realize that Yeshua never once even hinted at the abandonment of Torah.

Lawlessness is not Yahweh’s modus operandi, and grace is not a justification for sin.  Paul said that by grace we are saved.  He meant that we deserve punishment, but Yahweh forgave our sins because of His atoning sacrifice.  Yeshua did not shed His blood so that we can wallow in the mud.  He did not eat unclean animals or observe Sabbath on Sunday, both of which are anathema to Yahweh because they contradict His explicit commands in the Torah.  He also didn’t substitute pagan practices like Easter and Christmas for Passover and the Feast of Dedication, Hanukkah.

It’s easy to understand why the rabbis in Israel are unwilling to align themselves with Christians who thumb their noses at Yahweh.  Truth be told, it offends me, too, and you don’t need to be a Bible scholar to understand that it offends Yahweh as well.  Do you honestly believe that Yahweh changed his moral principles because of His sacrifice?  I hope not.

Yeshua was a Torah observant Jew, and He taught that all of us should obey Yahweh’s laws for our own good and because we love Him.  You will not find anything in the New Testament that contradicts those claims.  It’s time for Christians to wake up and stop pretending that the Messiah died so that we can go shopping on Saturday, eat bacon with our eggs, and engage in pagan rituals that Yahweh abhors.  These practices that have become cherished parts of Christian tradition are not just wrong; they are hindering essential progress.

4--Scripture of the Day

Daniel 11: 7-10

“One from her family line will arise to take her place. He will attack the forces of the king of the North and enter his fortress; he will fight against them and be victorious. He will also seize their gods, their metal images and their valuable articles of silver and gold and carry them off to Egypt. For some years he will leave the king of the North alone. Then the king of the North will invade the realm of the king of the South but will retreat to his own country. His sons will prepare for war and assemble a great army, which will sweep on like an irresistible flood and carry the battle as far as his fortress.”

John Sexton: What Initiated the IRS Targeting of the Tea Party?— Did news coverage of a Tea Party group launching a 501(c)(4) in February 2010–including a story at NPR– launch the two year scrutiny of Tea Party groups? It’s impossible to tell for certain but the IG report does offer some clues that suggest this could be the case.

Kyle Shideler: By Their Bloody Hands—The vicious murder and beheading of British Army drummer Lee Rigby by British Muslims Michael Adebowale and Michael Adebolajo has once again brought the specter of violent homegrown jihad into full view. Unlike the case of the Boston Marathon bombing, where the Tsarnaev brothers remained unidentified long enough to allow for rampant media speculation as to whether the attack was carried out by right-wing extremists or tax protestors, the two butchers held court in a Woolwich street on video, so they could not be misunderstood. In the video, they declaimed their grievances, including referring specifically to Sura 9 of the Koran (Al-Tawbah). That Sura includes two infamous verses, the “Verse of the Sword” (9:5), and Sura 9:29.

Maj.-Gen. (ret.) Yaakov Amidror: The Risks of Foreign Peacekeeping Forces in the West Bank— During the 1967 Six-Day War, I was a soldier serving in Battalion 202 of the Paratroopers Brigade of the Israel Defense Forces (IDF). We entered the Gaza Strip from south of Gaza City and on the first day of fighting, in the early afternoon, we were told not to open fire on a group that was due to arrive in an orderly fashion along the railway line. After about an hour a group of Indian soldiers with large Sikh turbans on their heads approached. They marched between the railway lines in neat groups of four, rifles slung across their shoulders with the barrels pointing downward, a clear sign that they did not intend to use them. This was UNEF, the United Nations Emergency Force, which had retreated from the area just before hostilities broke out.

Claire Berlinski: Erdogan Over the Edge—Over the past decade, Istanbul has seen a massive construction boom. Lovely old buildings have been razed by the hundreds. The protests were about a people exhausted by Istanbul’s uncontrolled growth; by its relentless traffic; by the incessant noise; by massive immigration from the countryside; by predatory construction companies – widely and for good reason believed to be in bed with the government – which have, over the past decade, destroyed a great deal of the city’s loveliness and cultural heritage.

Ozlem Gezer, Maximilian Popp and Oliver Trenkamp: Erdogan’s Grip on Power Is Rapidly Weakening—Increasingly, Turkish Prime Minister Erdogan is looking like an autocratic ruler whose people are no longer willing to tolerate him. He began governing in the same autocratic style for which he had bitterly criticized his predecessors. Demonstrations have been reported in more than 40 cities. In Istanbul, people have begun whispering that the military is distributing gasmasks – but to the demonstrators rather than to the police. The message: The military supports the protests.

Eric Trager: Egypt’s NGO Convictions Demand an Assertive Response—Washington should condition any future economic aid to Egypt – including support for Cairo’s bid to secure an International Monetary Fund loan – on Morsi pardoning the convicted NGO workers. The Muslim Brotherhood has no interest in adding an international crisis to its many domestic crises and would likely respond by trying to appease Washington.

David Makovsky: Tests Ahead for New Palestinian Prime Minister—Going forward, international donors will be focusing on new PA Prime Minister Rami Hamdallah’s progress in three main spheres: budgetary transparency, stewardship of the economy, and continued security cooperation with Israel. By placing the PA’s main account under international audit, former Prime Minister Salam Fayyad made it virtually impossible to divert aid. If Hamdallah takes a different course, Europe and Washington are bound to reduce their contributions.

Ephraim Asculai: Civilian Casualties of a Military Strike in Iran—Labeling the Bushehr reactor as a main target for a strike is pure demagoguery, as no one in his right mind would consider striking an operating nuclear power reactor.

Joseph Puder: Rearranging the Middle East— British perfidy and French collusion have created a Middle East that has been unstable since the dissolution of the Ottoman Empire in the aftermath of WWI. The Arab Spring and the convulsion it created in the Middle East require a rearrangement of the boundaries drawn by the British and French following World War I.

Raheel Raza: Combating Political Islam: Follow Israel’s Lead— Political Islam is the major force shaping the Middle East region today, and a dangerous one at that. The real question is if it can be tamed, and, more pointedly, what the West can do to bring about positive change during this pivotal time in history.  But first, we have to understand what we’re dealing with.

14--Blessings from Revelation

Blessings in the Book of Revelation is a book that you need to read, especially now.  There are blessings throughout the Scriptures but Revelation is the only book in the Bible actually containing a specific blessing for reading it. It’s repeated twice, once at the beginning and again at the end. This is the reason that I believe Revelation should be the first step toward studying biblical prophecy. Though not easy to do, Revelation can be broken down and understood by anyone, not just the academic elite. So, Revelation’s blessings are for everyone.  Click here to order the eBook.  Click here to order the paperback.
