You May Have to Use a Gun in Self-Defense, So Prepare

Many people who own guns really don’t know how to use them, and they haven’t given much thought to what they would do if they had to use their guns in self-defense.  Those problems can be remedied, and if you understand where we are now in the scheme of things, you should want to develop the skills you need to be an effective defender of your home and family.

These are my suggestions:

  1. If you live in a state where you can obtain a concealed weapons permit, then by all means get one.  Some states require minimal training before granting permits; others don’t.  If your state doesn’t require training, then you need to locate a good firearms instructor who can teach you the basics about gun safety and use and about the laws in your state pertaining to self-defense.  The sheriff in your county should be able to provide you with a list of instructors.
  2. Practice makes perfect, and that is especially true when it comes to guns: pistols, rifles, and shotguns.  Find a firing range and practice.  If you should have to defend yourself, you need to be able to concentrate on the perpetrator—not the gun.  If you lack confidence, you will probably focus on the gun and you will be at a distinct disadvantage.  Holding, manipulating, and firing weapons must become second nature to you.  Practicing helps to prepare you for an unfortunate circumstance if it arises.  If you are serious about being able to defend yourself, you will do what is necessary to prepare.  If you own a gun but don’t know how to use it and/or aren’t confident, a perpetrator can take the gun away from you and use it on you.
  3. At a minimum, you need to own at least one pistol, one rifle, and one shotgun, and you need to be proficient with each of them.  You also need a stockpile of ammunition—some for practice and some for defense.  Target ammunition is cheaper than defensive ammunition.  I suggest that you buy lots of target ammunition and just enough rounds of defensive ammunition to eliminate a threat.  How much is lots?  For each pistol and rifle that you own, you need several hundred rounds of target ammunition at a minimum.  Since ammunition is cheaper if you buy it in quantity, I suggest that you purchase pistol and rifle ammunition by the case.  A case is usually 1000 rounds.  Each time you go to the range, you should shoot the gun with which you are practicing 50 to 100 times.  That’s why you need a good supply of ammunition.  You don’t need as many rounds of shotgun ammunition because shotguns are for close-in action.  For self-defense purposes, shotguns are point-and-shoot weapons.  That’s especially true if you are using 00 buckshot and that is the defensive cartridge for shotguns that I recommend.
  4. The best all-purpose rifle on the market for self-defense is the AR15.  It’s effective; it’s easy to shoot; it produces very little recoil; and the magazine capacities available to you are large enough to enable you to fire without having to worry about reloading.  In states like Massachusetts where they don’t have much common sense where guns are concerned, magazine capacity is an issue, but in most states that are run by people with a modicum of sense, magazine capacity is not a problem.  Contrary to what dimwit politicians want us to believe, perpetrators don’t take a break while you reload.  That’s when they come in and kill you and your family.  I suggest that you buy at least two 30-round magazines for each AR15 that you own.  I also think that you should have at least one 60-round or 100-round magazine.  Again, you don’t want to have to reload.  Large capacity magazines enable you to fire freely without the fear of having to reload.
  5. Limit the number of calibers of pistols, rifles, and shotguns that you own because you need a stockpile of ammunition for each caliber.  For pistols, I suggest 9mm or 40 S&W.  You can buy a large range of 9mm and 40 S&W pistols from great gun manufacturers such as Glock, Smith & Wesson, and Beretta.  Buy a good pistol—not a cheap pistol.  Firms such as Glock, Smith & Wesson, and Beretta have earned reputations for reliability and dependability, and they will fix any problems with their guns that you may encounter at their expense.  Again, don’t buy a cheap pistol to save a few dollars because it may end up costing you your life.
  6. As I said before, the AR15 is the best all-purpose rifle.  Get one; put a great sight on it; and learn to use it.  Don’t be swayed by nincompoops who are trying to make you feel like a criminal if you own an AR15 and the large capacity magazines that make them so effective.  That’s exactly what you need for self-defense.  Let Joe Biden and his wife own just a 12-guage shotgun.  You probably have a lot more sense than they do, and if the security of your family is at stake, you need firepower that you can control.  Most people, women in particular, can’t control a 12-gauge shotgun for more than one shot without practice.  Contrary to Mr. Biden’s idiotic belief, firing a shotgun into the air will not eliminate a threat.  In fact, it lets him know where you are, and you become an easy target.
  7. Since I have said some derogatory things about 12-gauge shotguns, let me assure you that I am a big fan of 12-gauge shotguns—pump and automatic.  For defensive purposes, I believe that pumps are better than automatics because little or nothing can go wrong with a pump shotgun if you know how to use it, but again, you need to practice.  I suggest that you own at least one pump 12-gauge and one automatic 12-gauge.  If you learn how to use it, you can control a 12-gauge shotgun no matter how many times you have to shoot.
  8. If you are forced to defend yourself with a pistol or rifle, you need to fire 3 times in rapid-fire succession.  Three center-mass shots will eliminate virtually any threat, and with a little practice, firing 3 center-mass shots accurately is easy.  Once the perpetrator has been incapacitated, tell him not to move a muscle, call the sheriff, and keep your gun aimed at the perpetrator.  If he has a weapon, take it away from him before you call the sheriff.
  9. Before you use a weapon in self-defense, you must feel like you are about to encounter death or serious bodily harm.  If you are outside your home and you can escape, that is what you should do.  If you can’t escape and the perpetrator continues his attack, then you have a right to defend yourself in most states.  Again, you need to know the laws in your state.
  10. If you are inside your home and you live in a state whose politicians have minimal common sense, you don’t have to retreat inside your home if you feel like you are about to encounter death or serious bodily harm.  Make sure the perpetrator is inside your home, though.  That is very important.  If he is outside, call the sheriff immediately, and use your weapon only if he enters your home.
  11. If you have been forced to use your weapon in self-defense, hold your gun on the perpetrator until the deputy arrives.  When the deputy arrives, put your gun on the floor and hold your arms high in the air.  Next, simply tell the deputy and/or investigators your name, that you acted in self-defense, and that your lawyer will answer any other questions that he has.  Don’t say anything else—nothing, nada, zip.  And I repeat, say nothing else.  Lawyers know what they are doing, and you don’t.  Let them do what they are trained to do.  In today’s environment, I can’t stress the importance of this suggestion enough, so in case I haven’t been clear, say nothing to investigators except who you are and that you acted in self-defense.
  12. In the column on the right of each SnyderTalk post, you will see several ads for gun sights.  I highly recommend that you consider getting good sights for your pistol(s) and rifle(s).  You will be amazed at how accurate you can become in a short while if you learn to use your sights, and the sights that I’ve recommended are excellent sights.  It’s a good idea to have at least one shotgun with a good holographic sight.  That is especially true for women and men who are not proficient with guns.

Al Arabiya: Hizbullah Deploys 15,000 Troops in Syria for Anticipated Qalamoun Battle—Hizbullah has deployed 15,000 fighters for an expected offensive in the al-Qalamoun area north of Damascus, Syrian opposition sources said. The Syrian regime is also building up its forces in the area. The Damascus-based Abu al-Fadl al-Abbas brigade, a close Hizbullah ally comprised of Iraqi Shiite fighters who have been fighting alongside Assad’s army for months, said it also will take part in the expected battle.

Anne Gearan and William Booth: U.S. Feels Pressure to Show Progress in Peace Talks between Israelis and Palestinians—The Obama administration is feeling pressure to show progress in U.S.-sponsored peace talks between Israel and the Palestinians that both sides say have not made much headway. Secretary of State John Kerry will visit Jerusalem and the West Bank next week to prod both sides, which have been meeting for three months. Kerry insisted last month that he wants a full, final deal, not an interim agreement.

Jerusalem Post Editorial: Settlements Aren’t the Problem—The U.S., UN and PA – among others – castigated the Israeli government’s decision this week to move forward with building plans for 1,500 residential units beyond the 1949 armistice line. Israeli building is not an obstacle to peace. Most of the announced projects are slated for places such as Ma’ale Adumim, Betar Illit and eastern Jerusalem. In any two-state solution that would conceivably receive broad Israeli support, these places would remain part of the Jewish state.

Gonen Ginat: The right not to be murdered— The Jews are, once again, negotiating the terms under which the other side would be willing to refrain from killing us.

Ruthie Blum: Hypocrisy and double standards— Israel is used to being held to a higher standard, even by the U.S. What it has not yet adjusted to is a world in which the moral compass at the White House is broken.

Shlomi Eldar: No Public Welcome for Released Palestinian Prisoners in Gaza—On Oct. 30, Israel released 26 Palestinian security prisoners, five of whom returned home to Gaza. Hamas chose to ignore their return. Hamas TV did not report on their release, Palestinian journalists were forbidden from documenting their return, and their families were asked to “celebrate quietly and discreetly.”

Yoav Limor: Syria still hasn’t gotten the message— Assad will likely attempt similar weapons transfers in the future as well, something the defense budget needs to account for.

Chelsea Sheasley: Syria’s Chemical Weapons Plants Destroyed – But Actual Weapons Remain—Syria has destroyed its declared chemical weapons production and mixing facilities, the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons said Thursday. The OPCW now faces the more challenging task of destroying Syria’s chemical weapons stockpile – thought to include more than 1,000 tons of mustard gas, as well as the nerve agent sarin.

Yoram Ettinger: The Oslo reality check— Contrary to the hope of its architects, the Palestinian leopard does not change spots, only tactics.

Prof. Efraim Inbar: Washington must strike Iran, not bargain with it— The U.S.’s position as leader of the free world obligates it to destroy Iran’s nuclear infrastructure; going along with the delaying tactics of prolonged negotiations is dangerous and irresponsible.

4--Scripture of the Day USE THIS ONE

The scripture below is from the New American Standard Bible, and the hyperlinks associated with each word are from Strong’s Concordance for the New American Standard Bible.

Amos 9: 5-10

Adonai Yahweh of hosts, the One who touches the land so that it melts, and all those who dwell in it mourn, and all of it rises up like the Nile and subsides like the Nile of Egypt; the One who builds His upper chambers in the heavens and has founded His vaulted dome over the earth, He who calls for the waters of the sea and pours them out on the face of the earth, Yahweh is His name. “Are you not as the sons of Ethiopia to Me, O sons of Israel?” declares Yahweh. “Have I not brought up Israel from the land of Egypt, and the Philistines from Caphtor and the Arameans from Kir? Behold, the eyes of Adonai Yahweh are on the sinful kingdom, and I will destroy it from the face of the earth; nevertheless, I will not totally destroy the house of Jacob,” declares Yahweh. For behold, I am commanding, and I will shake the house of Israel among all nations as [grain] is shaken in a sieve, but not a kernel will fall to the ground. All the sinners of My people will die by the sword, those who say, ‘The calamity will not overtake or confront us.’”

14--Blessings from Revelation 2

Blessings in the Book of Revelation is a book that you need to read, especially now.  There are blessings throughout the Scriptures but Revelation is the only book in the Bible actually containing a specific blessing for reading it. It’s repeated twice, once at the beginning and again at the end. This is the reason that I believe Revelation should be the first step toward studying biblical prophecy. Though not easy to do, Revelation can be broken down and understood by anyone, not just the academic elite. So, Revelation’s blessings are for everyone.  Click here to order the eBook.  Click here to order the paperback.
