Hold Everyone Responsible for the Housing Debacle Accountable—ALL of Them

The U.S. Justice Department is taking a hard line against corrupt bankers who shared responsibility for the meltdown that led to the Great Recession.  According to Bloomberg,

JPMorgan Chase & Co. Chief Executive Officer Jamie Dimon went to Washington almost a month ago to see if U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder would settle a criminal probe of mortgage fraud at the bank if it paid more money to resolve related civil investigations.

Holder’s team, which included Deputy Attorney General James Cole and Associate Attorney General Tony West, said ending the investigation by the U.S. attorney in Sacramento would require the bank to plead guilty to something, according to a person familiar with the talks, which were held in a conference room that was Robert F. Kennedy’s office when he had Holder’s job.

Later, the department proposed the bank plead guilty to making false statements related to sales of toxic mortgage bonds. The bank proposed a nonprosecution agreement, which Holder rejected, the person said. The bank agreed to assist the continuing criminal probe. The negotiation typifies the harder line the Obama administration is taking in its second term.

Holder, 62, in an interview with Bloomberg News about the department’s new aggressiveness on bank probes, said: “It was clearly a priority for the president, it was a priority for me and for this Justice Department. One look at the magnitude of harm and the number of people suffering as a result of these acts that we’re looking into made sense to me that my personal involvement was needed.”

Kudos to the Obama administration for holding the bankers accountable.  They participated in a massive fraud that bamboozled hundreds of billions of dollars from supposedly knowledgeable investors who should have done their own due diligence but didn’t.  In the wake of their malfeasance, global financial markets started reeling and eventually collapsed leaving ordinary citizens as the innocent victims who had to pay the price.

The Obama administration’s bailout of the financial services industry meant that the bankers who were complicit in the affair were not held accountable, and even worse, they were rewarded with tax dollars that were collected from the victims.  It was the epitome of injustice.  The current Justice Department action is long overdue.

By the same token, political leaders played an important part in the scheme, and they should be held accountable as well.  Former President Bill Clinton, former Senator Christopher Dodd, and former Congressman Barney Frank are just three of the many political leaders who should be investigated and charged with criminal acts if it can be proven that they were involved in the corruption that led to the greatest recession since the Great Depression.  Justice demands it.

The Obama administration is often criticized for the partisan nature of its policy decisions.  With midterm elections just around the corner, some will argue that the Justice Department’s hard line at this particular time is simply a ploy aimed at garnering votes for Democrats.  If the DOJ fails to pursue all of the culprits involved in the banking fiasco, including political figures, that perspective will be vindicated.

Giulio Meotti: Obama is Sacrificing Israel on an Iranian Deal Altar— Barack Obama is sacrificing Israel on the altar of the deal he wishes to broker with Iran. The Jewish State should unilaterally act against the Iranian nuclear program, as Prime Minister Netanyahu warned in his speech at the United Nations on Tuesday, October 1, but it is currently more probable that Ayatollah Khamenei will arm himself with nuclear bombs. Because Obama’s damage to Israel’s deterrence has already been immense.

Abraham H. Foxman: The burden of proof is on Abbas— While Abbas’ recent U.N. speech was an improvement over past displays, the Palestinian president must now demonstrate how his affirmation of peace and partnership will be implemented at the negotiating table.

Andrew C. McCarthy: Funding Jihadists while Denying Military Benefits— Here is where we’re at: The Republican establishment — the guys who told us that for a trillion dollars and several thousand American casualties, we could build “Islamic democracies” that would be reliable U.S. allies in the War on Terror — say it is Ted Cruz who is “delusional” and the effort to stave off Obamacare that is “unattainable.” These self-appointed sages are, of course, the same guys who told us the way to “stabilize” and “democratize” Libya was to help jihadists topple and kill the resident dictator — who, at the time, was a U.S. ally, providing intelligence about the jihadists using his eastern badlands as a springboard for the anti-American terror insurgency in Iraq. That’s probably worth remembering this week, during which some of our new “allies” abducted Libya’s president while others car-bombed Sweden’s consulate in Benghazi — site of the still unavenged terrorist massacre of American ambassador J. Christopher Stevens and three other U.S. officials 13 months ago.

Deborah Weiss: Geneva Conference Moves Toward Criminalizing “Islamophobia”— In its quest to criminalize speech that’s critical of all Islam-related topics, the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC)* endorsed the formation of a new Advisory Media Committee to address “Islamophobia.” This past September, the OIC held “The First International Conference on Islamophobia: Law & Media.”  The conference endorsed numerous recommendations which arose from prior workshops on Islamophobia from media, legal and political perspectives.  A main conclusion was the consensus to institutionalize the conference and create an Advisory Media Committee to meet under the newly established OIC Media Forum based in Istanbul Turkey.

David Stout: Saudi Spy Chief Blasts US Regional Policies—Saudi Arabia’s top intelligence officer says the kingdom is planning to reduce cooperation with the U.S. in the arming and training of Syrian rebels because it is unhappy with Washington’s Middle Eastern policies.

Ron Ben-Yishai: Iran’s Strategic Landmine—At Geneva, Iran proposed that within 3-6 months it will stop or significantly reduce its activities related to uranium enrichment and allow tight international supervision. Iran is demanding that the world powers officially recognize its right to enrich uranium and declare that its nuclear program is solely for peaceful purposes. These two demands expose the “strategic landmine” in Iran’s proposal.

Emily B. Landau, Ephraim Asculai, and Shimon Stein: Israel’s Nuclear Ambiguity, Arms Control Policy, and Iran: Is the Time Ripe for Basic Changes?—Transparency in the nuclear realm tends to be regarded as an inherently positive value in international relations circles – to wit, the more transparent you are, the better. But is this true across the board? In Israel’s case, not being transparent in the nuclear realm has enabled Israel to maintain a low profile, which has both served its interests and had advantages for the wider region. By virtue of Israel not talking, issuing threats, or taking other action with regard to its assumed nuclear capabilities, the result has been that most other regional states could (grudgingly) live with the situation and not seek their own capabilities. This is better for regional stability than if Israel were a declared nuclear state that could not be ignored.

Dror Eydar: Nothing but venom— The media’s loathing for Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu goes far beyond politics.

Richard L. Cravatts: The Moral Incoherence of the Israeli Scholars Boycott Movement— This month, the American Association of University Professors (AAUP), the most largest and most significant organization of academic faculty members in the United States, with over 47,000 members dedicated an entire issue of their online Journal of Academic Freedom to examine the feasibility and appropriateness of an academic boycott of Israel.

Dana Milbank: In Obamacare speech, Obama makes a desperate sales pitch— It was an extensive pitch — a bit too extensive. As Obama was closing his 27-minute infomercial, a woman standing right behind him passed out. The people around her caught her, and Obama turned around to assist. “This happens when I talk too long,” he explained. Talking too long, yes. And protesting too much. Obama’s pitch sounded a bit desperate and perhaps it should. The product he rolled out three weeks ago was seriously defective.

The scripture below is from the New American Standard Bible, and the hyperlinks associated with each word are from Strong’s Concordance for the New American Standard Bible.

Amos 6: 12-14

Do horses run on rocks? Or does one plow them with oxen? Yet you have turned justice into poison and the fruit of righteousness into wormwood, you who rejoice in Lodebar, and say, “Have we not by our [own] strength taken Karnaim for ourselves?” “For behold, I am going to raise up a nation against you, O house of Israel,” declares Yahweh Elohim Sabaoth, “And they will afflict you from the entrance of Hamath to the brook of the Arabah.”

14--Blessings from Revelation 2

Blessings in the Book of Revelation is a book that you need to read, especially now.  There are blessings throughout the Scriptures but Revelation is the only book in the Bible actually containing a specific blessing for reading it. It’s repeated twice, once at the beginning and again at the end. This is the reason that I believe Revelation should be the first step toward studying biblical prophecy. Though not easy to do, Revelation can be broken down and understood by anyone, not just the academic elite. So, Revelation’s blessings are for everyone.  Click here to order the eBook.  Click here to order the paperback.
