Ilan Berman—Iran’s Extending Influence in the Western Hemisphere:

To properly grasp the challenge posed by Iran’s activities in the Western Hemisphere, they need to be understood in proper geopolitical context: as part of a larger “peripheral strategy” on the part of the Iranian regime. To a significant degree, they are a response to growing diplomatic and economic pressure levied against Iran by the West over its nuclear program, and represent an attempt by Iran’s leadership to combat their regime’s growing international isolation. As such, they are far from unique; Iran’s activities in Latin America follow the same broad pattern as its outreach in other areas of the world, including Asia and Africa.

Yet Iran’s presence in the Americas is arguably more mature than it is elsewhere, owing to the permissive, ideologically-sympathetic environment that prevails throughout much of the region. Over the past decade, Iran’s exploitation of this environment has proceeded along several lines.

13--Perspectives

#####

Avi Issacharoff: This time in Sinai, the Egyptians mean business— Egyptian security forces early Tuesday morning discovered and sealed another eight smuggling tunnels running from the Sinai Peninsula to the Gaza Strip. According to Palestinian media reports, the Egyptians also located 23 warehouses used for storing fuel and thwarted the imminent transfer of the fuel to the Hamas-run territory. These warehouses contained 140,000 liters of fuel, a rare commodity of late in the Strip.

Calev Myers: Palestinians should protest—If I was a Palestinian currently residing in the disputed territories, I would take to the streets in protest against the recent decision of the European Union to desist from funding Israeli entities located beyond the Green Line. The gravest danger ensuing from this decision is that it is apt to escalate into a general boycott of any products produced from the territories, like we witnessed recently in South Africa.

P. David Hornik: Boycotting the Untermenschen— On Tuesday, which was Tisha B’Av—a mournful Jewish holiday that commemorates two destructions of Jerusalem, the Spanish Expulsion, and other disasters of Jewish history—Israel’s far-left daily Haaretz trumpeted the news that the European Union had issued a new directive.

Ron Prosor (Israel’s ambassador to the UN): Boycotting a Better Future—In December 2012, Israel introduced a UN General Assembly resolution titled “Entrepreneurship for Development” as part of its broader initiative to promote growth in the developing world. It passed with over 70% of member states raising their hands, including many countries without diplomatic ties to Israel. Not only did the entire Arab bloc vote against the measure, however, it waged a determined effort to undermine it from day one.

Noah Beck: The EU’s Broken Mideast Compass— The European Union recently sent out a directive barring its 28 members from cooperating with Israeli entities in the West Bank and East Jerusalem. The boycott includes “all funding, cooperation, and the granting of scholarships, research grants and prizes” to Israeli entities in East Jerusalem and the West Bank.

Michael Gerson: In Israel, No Silver Linings—Israel is the relatively quiet eye of the Middle Eastern storm. But there are vistas of conflict on nearly every side. The triumph of Bashar al-Assad in Syria, according to Sallai Meridor, the former Israeli ambassador to the U.S., would “not be the devil we know, but a much worse devil, an agent of Iran and Hizbullah.” Israel’s cold peace with Egypt is fragile, and a distracted Egyptian military could allow jihadists to cause trouble in the Sinai. “We look at Jordan,” says Meridor, “and pray.”

Bret Stephens: The Boring Palestinians—And yet for all its presumed importance, the Palestinian saga has gotten awfully boring, hasn’t it? The grievances that remain unchanged, a cast of characters that never alters, the same schematics, the clichés that were shopworn decades ago. If it were a TV drama, it would be “The X-Files”—in its 46th season. The truth is out there. Still. We get it. We just don’t give a damn anymore.

Adam Turner: Positions of Power— In selecting Samantha Power as his nominee for United Nations Ambassador, President Obama has chosen an appointee whose stated positions are detrimental to promoting a strong American foreign policy and would weaken the position of one of our strongest allies, Israel.  She also seems to have a temperament that is not especially suited to diplomacy.  (Just ask Hillary Clinton.)  Yet, despite her many flaws, politically attuned observers still confidently predict that Ms. Power will win Senate confirmation. How so?  Well, she intends to follow the Chuck Hagel method of winning Senate confirmation – she will reverse, apologize for, explain away, and/or deny her record.  Power has already started this process.

Janice Shaw Crouse: Being Schooled About Transgenders— The days are long gone when the public school systems across the country focused on teaching reading, writing, and arithmetic. Education these days involves indoctrination, far more than teaching children to think clearly and to recognize demagoguery and propaganda. Too often, our schools — from pre-school to graduate programs — are saturated with so-called “progressive” ideology.  Even when they cannot read or do basic math, children can spout the latest cultural truism, what Justice Scalia might term “argle-bargle.” They know where to buy condoms or obtain birth control; they “know” that global warming is the greatest threat facing mankind. And, today, it is becoming perfectly normal for “transgender” students to pop in and out of whichever bathroom they want to use.

Tom Kington: Vatican offers ‘time off purgatory’ to followers of Pope Francis tweets— In its latest attempt to keep up with the times the Vatican has married one of its oldest traditions to the world of social media by offering “indulgences” to followers of Pope Francis’ tweets. The church’s granted indulgences reduce the time Catholics believe they will have to spend in purgatory after they have confessed and been absolved of their sins.

4--Scripture of the Day

Hosea 8: 3-4

Israel has rejected the good; the enemy will pursue him. They have set up kings, but not by Me; they have appointed princes, but I did not know it. With their silver and gold they have made idols for themselves, that they might be cut off.

14--Blessings from Revelation

Blessings in the Book of Revelation is a book that you need to read, especially now.  There are blessings throughout the Scriptures but Revelation is the only book in the Bible actually containing a specific blessing for reading it. It’s repeated twice, once at the beginning and again at the end. This is the reason that I believe Revelation should be the first step toward studying biblical prophecy. Though not easy to do, Revelation can be broken down and understood by anyone, not just the academic elite. So, Revelation’s blessings are for everyone.  Click here to order the eBook.  Click here to order the paperback.
