Thanks to COVID-19, our world has changed dramatically. When the final results are in, the global pandemic may turn out to be little more than a bad flu season, but that doesn’t matter. What matters is changes in people’s attitudes. They aren’t likely to revert to the old normal.

The Role of Central Government has Changed

In the United States where freedom is cherished, people have been willing to accept a level of government intrusion in their daily lives that is unprecedented in peacetime. Stay at home. No closer than 6 feet. No going to out to eat in restaurants. No Masters Golf Tournament. No baseball games. No high school and college graduation ceremonies. No NBA games. No church services. The list is seemingly endless, and for the most part, people obligingly went along. That’s changing now, but very slowly.

The same kind of thing has happened in every country. People around the world have surrendered to central governments freedoms that have been taken for granted. When the dust settles on COVID-19, many of those freedoms will be history, especially in countries where traditionally people have been willing to accept government interference in their lives anyway. European countries come to mind immediately.

A Global Currency

For decades, governments around the world have been talking about moving to a cashless society. For starters, currency can be counterfeited. No cash, no counterfeiting.

Then came Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies. People who know anything about the relationship between state sovereignty and country currencies have said all along that cryptocurrencies in their present form won’t last, because governments won’t allow them to survive. But government didn’t quash cryptocurrencies immediately. Why?

The answer is that Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies are proving that there are alternatives to cash that people are willing to accept. When the time is right, governments will simply take them over and declare that they are the only ones permitted to control currency in any form. Bitcoin and the others are just experiments that turned out to be popular with the masses. Cryptocurrencies will last, but not with control in private hands.

Eventually, we will see a global cryptocurrency. The logic for country currencies is very weak, but they are dinosaurs that refuse to die. Thanks to COVID-19, we are one giant step closer to a global cryptocurrency, and with it, a global government with taxing and policing powers. One more mass scare event, and they will become realities.

Hint: cryptocurrencies don’t spread germs, viruses, and deadly diseases.

Distance Learning and Working

Distance learning and working from home have been in use and talked about widely for decades, but thanks to COVID-19, they have become realities for a very large number of people. There will be no going back to business as usual.

The ramifications will be far-reaching. Many people tolerated living in large, congested cities because they had to. Not anymore. Then can work in Atlanta, for instance, but they can do most of their work from their homes on Lake Hartwell in South Carolina. College students can enroll in and attend Harvard University, but they don’t have to live in Boston for the entire academic year.

Ordinary citizens can have the best of both worlds. They have tried it, and they like it.

The world really has changed dramatically. We are just beginning to understand what that means. The need for large metropolitan areas is decreasing. That has huge infrastructure implications. For example, Georgia’s population is 10.62 million. Atlanta’s population is 5.95 million. About 56% of Georgia residents live in and around Atlanta, many of them because they have to, not because they want to. Now, they don’t have to, and they know it. Those 2-hour commutes will seem excessive after COVID-19. Working at home cuts costs as well, because companies don’t need to build and maintain space for all of their workers.

Get ready for a decline in metropolitan area populations and everything that entails. New York City, Los Angeles, Chicago, Houston, and other metro areas won’t cease to exist, but their populations will be smaller. It’s a paradigm shift of gargantuan proportions, and it’s almost here.

The Democrat Party is Dying Right in Front of Our Eyes

COVID-19 isn’t the death knell for the Democrat Party, but it’s a nail in the Democrat Party’s coffin. As quickly as the crisis is over and officials begin to examine carefully and methodically what happened, New York City will stand out.

The New York metropolitan area includes Long Island and the mid- and lower-Hudson River Valley in the state of New York. It also includes north and central New Jersey, three counties in western Connecticut and five counties in northeastern Pennsylvania. The data about COVID-19 cases and deaths for the NYC metro area is available to our public health officials and to the president. Soon, it will be readily available to everyone. The story the data tells will lead reasonable people to conclude that Democrats in New York, New York City in particular, are largely responsible for the COVID-19 tragedy in the U.S.

To date, more than 35% of COVID-19 cases in the U.S. have occurred in the New York metro area.

To date, more than 13% of deaths in the world from COVID-19 have taken place in the New York metro area. It has more COVID-19 deaths than any country in the world except Spain, Italy, and France. If the trend continues, very soon the New York metro area will have more deaths due to COVID-19 than any country in the world.

New York Governor Andrew Cuomo is a Democrat. So is New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio. They were at odds with President Trump from the get-go over his handing of the COVID-19 pandemic. So were New York public health officials. All of them mocked the president until cases and deaths in the city mounted. They urged New York City residents to go to parades, movies, restaurants, etc., etc. They wanted to keep doing business as usual.

President Trump urged New Yorkers to change their routines to avoid infecting each other. The preliminary verdict is in. The president was right, and Cuomo and de Blasio were wrong.

Governor Cuomo and Mayor de Blasio played political games with people’s lives, and New Yorkers died by the thousands. When New Yorkers wake up to reality, there will be hell to pay. Right now, Cuomo thinks he’s in the catbird seat. Very soon, he will realize that he’s in the hot seat.

New York politicians and public health officials put politics ahead of the the people they are supposed to serve. Democrats in other localities did the same thing. When the final verdict is in, Democrats across the nation will pay a very high price, but New York Democrats will suffer most. So will Democrat public health officials in New York and the Democrat media that’s headquartered in New York.

The Fat Lady is About to Sing

According to a recent Gallup Poll, the U.S. general public disapproves of the media’s handling of the COVID-19 pandemic:

According to a new Gallup poll released Wednesday, the media was the only institution that scored a negative approval rating among the public with only 44 percent of Americans approving of the way the media has covered the virus. Fifty-five percent disapprove making for a -11 percent rating.

The next institution to score the lowest among the people was Congress, which garnered a 59 percent approval rating to 37 percent who reported disapproving. Trump landed a 60 percent approval rating to 38 percent saying otherwise.

Normal people in New York can be persuaded to believe Democrat lies, but they can’t be convinced to support a political party that is headed by people whose actions led to tens of thousands of needless deaths so their elected officials could score political points.

Democrats are a disgrace to the nation and to the human race. That’s not a political slogan. It’s the truth.

I haven’t attempted to talk about every megashift that is about to take place, but the ones I’ve mentioned are huge. As Dorothy said in The Wizard of Oz, “Toto, I’ve a feeling we’re not in Kansas anymore.”

Get ready. Things are about to start changing rapidly.
