Has the FBI Become the United States’ Gestapo?

While I taught at the University of Virginia, I consulted with the FBI, the DEA, and the DOJ. I am the proud owner of an FBI Academy pistol. It’s a Beretta 92fs with an FBI Academy medallion in each of the walnut grips. It was given to me by the FBI.
When Louis Freeh was FBI Director, I was the keynote speaker at a meeting that included all the FBI Special Agents in Charge. They run FBI offices all over the world. At that meeting, I shared the platform with Director Freeh and Attorney General Janet Reno. Following that meeting, Director Freeh sent two special agents from FBI headquarters in Washington to meet with me in Charlottesville. They wanted to know if I would help them integrate the use of computers in FBI offices. That’s not my area of expertise, so I told them who to contact.
At that time, I had no reason to suspect that the FBI had gone rogue, but since Donald Trump was nominated for President of the United States, things have changed. Today’s FBI is not the same FBI I knew. The FBI raid on former President Donald Trump’s residence at Mar-a-Lago is an excellent case in point.

Congressional Republicans are vowing to ramp up oversight of the Biden White House and the Department of Justice after the FBI’s raid of former President Donald Trump’s Mar-a-Lago estate.
House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy, R-Calif., was the first to make the pledge late Monday after news broke that Mar-a-Lago had been raided by federal agents over Trump’s purported failure to turn over classified documents to the National Archives.
“The Department of Justice has reached an intolerable state of weaponized politicization,” McCarthy said. “When Republicans take back the House, we will conduct immediate oversight of their department, follow the facts, and leave no stone unturned.”

Newspaper, Judicial Watch request release of search warrant presumably tied to Trump FBI raid:
The Albany Times Union and Judicial Watch have separately asked a federal magistrate judge to publicly release the search warrant for what is presumably related to the FBI raid of former President Trump’s Mar-a-Lago property in Florida on Monday. The judge gave the DOJ until August 15 to respond to the request.
House Oversight GOP demands scrutiny into National Archives role in FBI’s raid of Trump’s Mar-a-Lago:
Republican members of the House Oversight Committee are demanding answers about the role the National Archives played in the FBI’s raid Monday of former President Donald Trump’s private home in Florida, Mar-a-Lago.
The lawmakers led by Ranking Member Rep. James Comer, R-Ky., wrote to the acting archivist of the United States Debra Wall Wednesday to express their concerns and to request the preservation of documents and communications related to the warrant executed this week at Mar-a-Lago.
El Salvador president rips FBI Trump raid, asks what US would say if his police targeted candidates:
The president of the central American country of El Salvador criticized the FBI following the raid at former President Donald Trump’s residence at Mar-a-Lago, noting apparent hypocrisy.
“What would the US Government say, if OUR police raided the house of one of the main possible contenders of OUR 2024 presidential election?” Nayib Bukele, president of El Salvador since 2019, tweeted on Wednesday, sharing a TMZ article about the FBI search of Mar-a-Lago.
Mystery at Mar-a-Lago: What were FBI agents looking for and what are the consequences?:
In short, a search warrant indicates that federal authorities have evidence of ongoing criminal activity at the location where they intend to carry out the search. Warrants are often used in situations where authorities believe a subpoena won’t be effective. It is not itself a criminal charge.
Generally speaking, federal agents seeking a warrant must provide an affidavit that contains details about exactly what material they expect to seize during the search and why they believe it is at the location subject to the warrant. A judge reviews the affidavit and signs off on the warrant if they believe the details provided by the agents pass legal muster for probable cause.
Can Trump be disqualified from running for president?:
Trump is under investigation, among other things, for criminal incitement to insurrection. Jeh Johnson, Homeland Security secretary under President Obama and a former federal prosecutor, said that, “given all the evidence we all know about,” an “aggressive prosecutor” could find “this as a prosecutable indictable case.” The penalty for inciting insurrection is 10 years in prison and disqualification from holding office.
The FBI and Donald Trump
President Trump received special attention from higher-ups in the FBI while he was running for president and after he was elected. They treated him like a criminal. It started under FBI Director James Comey and continued under FBI Director Christopher Wray, a Trump appointee. So far, no one at the FBI has been held accountable for his or her misdeeds, some of which were possibly criminal. That is enough to suggest that the FBI may have gone rouge and now resembles the Gestapo. The FBI is our national police force. It must be above reproach. Today, it is not. Even people like me who have experience working with the FBI harbor serious doubts about the nation’s top law enforcement agency.
The January 6th Hearings in the House
The January 6th hearings in the House chaired by Rep. Adam Schiff with assistance from the FBI are anything but fair. Schiff is running the hearings like a kangaroo court. There is no cross examination of witnesses. The GOP members of the committee are not allowed call witnesses. Nothing about the hearings is fair. They resemble the show trials put on in Germany while Adolf Hitler was dictator. Just like those trials, the purpose of the January 6th hearings is to spread propaganda.
Democrats are Afraid that Donald Trump Will Run for President Again and Win
Democrats in Congress and their accomplices in the DOJ and the FBI are desperately afraid that President Trump will run for president again and that the American people will elect him again. Now that we know how much damage Joe Biden’s administration has done to our country, that should come as no surprise. Democrats and their accomplices in government are trying to prevent Trump from running. What we are seeing now is identical to the things that take place in Banana Republics all over the world.
Under Democrat leadership, the United States is rapidly becoming a Banana Republic. It is ironic that during Trump’s presidency, the United States achieved magnificent results on all fronts and proved to the American people that a non-politician can accomplish things that career politicians can hardly imagine. Of course, Democrats do not want President Trump to run again and win. His successes in office make them look like the incompetent imbeciles they are.
The Bidens, Joe and Hunter, and the FBI
The FBI has been sitting on evidence that Joe Biden and his son, Hunter, committed a vast array of crimes while Joe was vice president. Even the New York Times has said that Hunter’s laptop contains a treasure trove of evidence of criminal wrongdoing. Their dealings in China and Ukraine deserve serious criminal investigation along with all the other crimes they committed.

Mar-a-Lago Raid Sparks Understandable Suspicions:
It would be a relief to see those suspicions answered by a prompt announcement of the details of a warrant seeking specific evidence in pursuit of a serious crime identified in advance—not a license for a fishing expedition, but a warrant crafted the way warrants used to work.
I don’t root for that outcome politically; I have spent years defending Trump against phony and baseless attacks, and this would be a development that actually had some teeth. But at least my country would not be turning into a caricature of vindictive third-world corruption.
The FBI has revealed a propensity for misdirected aggression, from its years of exhaustively flogging an empty Trump-Russia collusion narrative to a recently leaked training document seeking to stigmatize as “violent extremists” citizens displaying certain patriotic flags.
We also have an attorney general who alerted law enforcement across America to view the righteous indignation of woke-weary parents as a dangerous sign of potential domestic terrorism. It is under Merrick Garland‘s watch that January 6th defendants, many admittedly deserving of some consequences, have languished in jail cells, prolonging their path through a system that has a constitutional duty to process them efficiently.
There are ample reasons to doubt the purity of the motives behind the Mar-a-Lago raid. The cleansing light of healthy scrutiny will determine whether those doubts are well founded.
