The World is on the Cusp of Another “War to End All Wars”
See “Pelosi visits Kyiv; ruble to be used in occupied Kherson from today, UK says”.
As of today, the Russian ruble will be the sovereign currency of occupied Kherson, Ukraine. To the world, the currency used represents sovereignty and sovereignty is regarded as sacrosanct.
There won’t be a global currency until global leaders determine that sovereignty isn’t sacred. When might that happen?
I’ve given that question a lot of thought over many decades. So far, the only thing I can think of that makes sense is that global leaders won’t relinquish sovereignty over their countries until there is a global war that is so devastating that they determine it’s in their collective best interest not to allow anything like it to ever happen again.
World War I was called “the war to end all wars”. During World War I, 20 million people died and 21 million people were wounded, but World War I didn’t do it. The League of Nations was created following WWI. It failed and quickly ceased to exist. WWI was not devastating enough.
World War II didn’t do it, either. During WWII, there were between 21 million and 25.5 million military deaths, between 29 million and 30.5 million civilian deaths due to military activity, and between 19 million and 28 million civilian deaths due to war-related famine and disease. Deaths from all causes during World War II were between 70 million and 85 million people. The United Nations was created following WWII, but so far, it’s been ineffective and essentially useless.
A war that’s unlike anything the world has seen so far will do it. Sovereign states now have the weaponry needed to inflict the kind of damage and loss of life on a grand scale, especially the loss of civilian life, that will be required to cause global leaders to say “enough is enough”. Only then will they relinquish sovereignty over their countries to a global governing authority, and the window of opportunity won’t last long.
The war I am talking about could occur at any time. What will trigger that war?
The catalyst for the war is likely to be something that we don’t expect, but an unhinged global leader will precipitate that war. He will put his interests above the interests of all others and start a global conflagration that will be so devastating and all-encompassing that the world following the war will barely resemble the world before the war.
All that’s needed is an unhinged global leader who has access to and authority over a nuclear stockpile that’s large enough to ignite that kind of war. Is Vladimir Putin that man?
Russia has a nuclear arsenal that’s large enough and adequate missile capabilities, but I don’t think so.
During WWII, the Soviet Union lost between 20 million and 27 million lives, 12.5 million to 19 million of those lives lost were civilian lives. That’s more lives lost during WWII than any other country by far. It doesn’t matter to Vladimir Putin and Russians like him that Joseph Stalin tried to play both ends from the middle during WWII hoping to expand the Soviet Union. At first, Stalin sided with Hitler, but Hitler turned on him. Only then did Stalin side with the Allies.
At the end of WWII, Stalin got the territory he wanted, but in 1991 the Soviet Union collapsed and many former Soviet Bloc countries became independent. Ukraine is one of those countries.
The only things that matter to Putin and those like him in Russia is the fact that Russia lost more lives in WWII than any other country and the fact that the Soviet Union collapsed. He wants to expand Russian territory by regaining control over the old Soviet Bloc countries. Putin’s actions could trigger the next global war, but as I said, I don’t think that will happen.
Having said that, I do believe the person who will precipitate that war is alive today and that the next “war to end all wars” is not far off. At this point, I won’t speculate any further than that. I could, but I won’t.
