Isaiah 50: 9-11—“Behold, Yahweh God helps Me; who is he who condemns Me? Behold, they will all wear out like a garment; the moth will eat them. Who is among you that fears Yahweh, that obeys the voice of His servant, that walks in darkness and has no light? Let him trust in the name of Yahweh and rely on his God. Behold, all you who kindle a fire, who encircle yourselves with firebrands, walk in the light of your fire and among the brands you have set ablaze. This you will have from My hand: You will lie down in torment.”

“On your walls, O Jerusalem, I have appointed watchmen….” (Isaiah 62: 6)

The NPT Review Conference (RevCon) final document of May 2010 includes a clause on a conference to be convened in 2012 on a weapons-of-mass-destruction-free-zone (WMDFZ) in the Middle East. The said clause – the result of massive pressure by Egypt and threats to block a consensus on the entire final document if its demands were not accepted – reads: “The Secretary-General of the UN and the co-sponsors of the 1995 Resolution [on the Middle East], in consultation with the States of the region, will convene a conference in 2012, to be attended by all States of the Middle East, on the establishment of a Middle East [WMDFZ], on the basis of arrangements freely arrived at by the States of the region, and with the full support and engagement of the nuclear-weapon States.” The clause also mandates the appointment of a facilitator to consult with the parties regarding preparations for the conference.

Israel, like other foreign countries, has always been careful not to be seen to interfere directly in American electoral politics. In 2010, as in all previous elections, the Israeli government studiously refrained from making any statement or gesture that could be interpreted as reflecting a partisan preference. Nevertheless, given the rather rocky relations between Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu and President Barack Obama, it was widely suspected that Netanyahu would welcome a Republican victory that would devalue the President’s political capital and make it more difficult for him to exert pressure on Israel in the context of his efforts to promote a peace agreement. If that suspicion is correct, then Netanyahu may well be encouraged by the outcome of the mid-term elections, which delivered a stinging rebuke to Obama. However, further reflection suggests that any expectation that Obama will be too weak and too scarred to pursue an activist policy vis-à-vis the Israeli-Palestinian conflict is likely to be confounded.

With these videos as background, consider the promises below that Yahweh made and remember that Yahweh never reneges on a promise:

Genesis 12: 3—“And I will bless those who bless you, and the one who curses you I will curse. And in you all the families of the earth will be blessed.”

Genesis 17: 4-8— “For My part, this is My covenant with you: you will become the father of many nations.  And you are no longer to be called Abram; your name is to be Abraham, for I am making you father of many nations, and your issue will be kings.  And I shall maintain my covenant between Myself and you, and your descendants after you, generation after generation, as a covenant in perpetuity, to be your God and the God of your descendants after you.  And to you and to your descendants after you, I shall give the country where you are now immigrants, the entire land of Canaan, to own in perpetuity.  And I will be their God.”

Genesis 28: 13-15—“I am Yahweh, the God of your father Abraham and the God of Isaac; the land on which you lie, I will give to you and your descendants.  Your descendants shall also be like the dust of the earth, and you shall spread out to the west and to the east and to the north and to the south; and in you and in your descendants shall all the families of the earth be blessed.  Behold, I am with you and will keep you wherever you go, and will bring you back to this land; for I will not leave you until I have done what I have promised.”

Genesis 35: 10-12— “You shall no longer be called Jacob, but Israel shall be your name….I am God Almighty (El Shaddai); be fruitful and multiply; a nation and a company of nations shall come from you, and kings shall come forth from you.  The land which I gave to Abraham and Isaac, I will give it to you, and I will give the land to your descendants after you.”

Exodus 6: 6-8— “I am Yahweh, and I will bring you out from under the burdens of the Egyptians, and I will deliver you from their bondage.  I will also redeem you with an outstretched arm and with great judgments.  Then I will take you for My people, and I will be your God; and you shall know that I am Yahweh your God, who brought you out from under the burdens of the Egyptians.  I will bring you to the land which I swore to give to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, and I will give it to you for a permanent possession; I am Yahweh.”

The day after sweeping electoral change, it is tempting to think the world is shifting on its axis. American voters may have shifted the political axis – or righted it, depending – but it would be a mistake to think things beyond our border have changed.

Over four years ago, when I started The Israel Factor survey (what’s The Israel Factor? You’ll have to read the introduction if you don’t know), our panel was the first to identify the problem the then candidate Barack Obama had with Israelis. On the first survey we did, Obama came the least favorable candidate in the eyes of our Israeli experts – a fact that Obama campaign advisors later acknowledged, after reading The Factor.

The actual destination for the bombs cleverly disguised as innocent shipments of printer ink, sent last weekend by the world jihad network (usually described by its generic name, Al-Qaida ) operating in Yemen, remains unclear. According to one assessment, addressing them to Jewish synagogues in Chicago was merely a ploy and the packages were to explode inside airplanes mid-flight. Another estimation holds the bombs were indeed intended to reach the synagogues.

The recent attempt to cross borders in an act of terrorism, with explosive devices originating in Yemen destined via cargo planes for the United States and neutralized before their activation, should come as no surprise. It is an example of al- Qaida Central’s intensifying efforts in the last two years to wage terror attacks against the United States, Europe, and Arab allies taking part in the coalition against fundamentalist Islamic terrorism.

In a sharply executed and perfectly timed pincer movement, Labor’s two big bosses outflanked Ehud Barak yesterday and probably destroyed his political career. From now on, the defense minister is working on borrowed time.

In the past decade Israeli officials have been bombarded by both criminal and civil lawsuits for their political activities in the Israeli government and/or their military activities in the Israel Defense Forces. Examples of this are the criminal complaints that were filed in Belgium in 2001 against former Prime Minister Ariel Sharon and in the United Kingdom in August 2005 against Major General (res.) Doron Almog, as well as the arrest warrant that was issued in New Zealand in 2006 against former Chief of Staff Moshe Ya’alon. The most recent instance was the arrest warrant issued in the United Kingdom against Israeli opposition leader Tzipi Livni for alleged war crimes committed during Israel’s Gaza Operation when she was Israel’s foreign minister. Similar civil suits have also been launched in the U.S. against, for example, Avi Dichter, the former Director of the Israel Security Agency.

The legendary TV sleuth Columbo used to question witnesses to a crime he was investigating by confronting them brusquely: “Just give me the facts,” he would say. He was not interested in hearing conflicting subjective accounts of the kind that appear in Akira Kurosawa’s famous film “Rashomon,” where each of the witnesses to a crime gave his subjective impression in mutually contradictory ways. The facts, that is all he wanted to hear. The facts, that is what is required of those who teach history to our children in school when they teach the history of Israel’s War of Independence.

Outgoing head of Military Intelligence Maj.-Gen. Amos Yadlin may have initially waxed sentimental on Tuesday during his final appearance before the Knesset’s Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee, but the MI head later gave a stark warning regarding Iran’s nuclear program, and painted a grim portrait of what Israel’s next war could look like.

TODAY marks 15 years since an assassin’s bullet killed my friend, Yitzhak Rabin, the Israeli prime minister. Since his death, not a week has gone by that I have not missed him. I loved him and his wife, Leah, very much. On the occasion of the anniversary of his death, his yahrzeit, the world would do well to remember the lessons of his life: his vision for freedom, tolerance, cooperation, security and peace is as vital now as it was 15 years ago, when he happily spoke and sang for peace at a huge rally in Tel Aviv just before he was killed.

#####

O.K., you poor little Democrats. Stop sobbing. Lift up your little liberal heads and shout. There’s gonna be ….

#####

Tuesday’s election was indeed a “shellacking” for the Democrats, as President Obama admitted after a long night of bad news. It was hardly an order from the American people to discard the progress of the last two years and start over again.

#####

Meg Whitman had the kind of resources most candidates only dream of, and she was a political outsider in the quintessential anti-incumbent year. So what went wrong?

#####

It’s common these days — and, to some Democrats, comforting — to summon hazy memories of 1994, when, as happened again on Tuesday, their party lost the House of Representatives to the Republicans. That wasn’t so bad, was it? After all, it led to a period of productive bipartisan deal-making — and then, two years later, Bill Clinton won reelection by a comfortable margin.

#####

The Republican electoral wave that rolled across America on Tuesday was propelled by two powerful currents, overlapping in places and diverging in others.

#####

Barack Obama showed a talent for political strategy in 2008, upending the favorite, Hillary Clinton, in the Democratic primaries and capturing a bigger share of the vote in November than any Democrat since Lyndon Johnson in 1964. But the bold, hopeful insurgent has become the unpopular incumbent. His historic election has been followed by a massive repudiation.

#####

Unwilling to delay until tomorrow mistakes that could be made immediately, Democrats used 2010 to begin losing 2012. Trying to preemptively drain the election of its dangerous (to Democrats) meaning, all autumn Democrats described the electorate as suffering a brain cramp, an apoplexy of fear, rage, paranoia, cupidity –something. Any explanation would suffice as long as it cast what voters were about to say as perhaps contemptible and certainly too trivial to be taken seriously by the serious.

#####

Democrats have talked endlessly about the importance of narrative – missing in President Obama’s case. We’ve heard over and over about the lack of smart messaging and the president’s failure to communicate. If only Obama could better express himself, all would be well.

#####

The message to President Obama from Tuesday’s election could not have been plainer: Don’t abandon your goals. Change your way of operating.

The national, sharply discordant aftermath of NPR’s firing of Juan Williams continues with the possibility it may lead Congress to cut government funding of not only National Public Radio, but also the Public Broadcasting System and the Corporation for Public Broadcasting. But what if the heads of NPR were removed, and more Americans across party lines realized how much they would lose if PBS and NPR would clearly show the record of their continuous independence under present partial government funding? I will show some of that valuable record.

Everyone is familiar with the traditional political spectrum, derived from the seating arrangements of the French Parliaments in revolutionary France: The aristocracy, defenders of the established order, sat on the speaker’s right, the place of honor. The upstart bourgeois capitalists occupied the left.

Freshman Democratic Reps. Tom Perriello and Glenn Nye — as well as longtime incumbent Rep. Rick Boucher — all lost re-election bids Tuesday, portending a seismic shift back to Republicans in the U.S. House of Representatives.

#####

Allegedly, the Tea Party movement has been violent, angry, intent to incite fear and hate among the populace. These narratives weren’t true — tonight’s vote has proven them caricatures laid out by journalists with short wordcounts and shorter attention spans.

It’s the bloodiest week in Iraq in months. At least 14 explosions rocked Baghdad on Tuesday — reportedly a mix of car bombs and roadside bombs — killing more than 60 people and injuring nearly 200. The attacks come on the heels of a hostage standoff at a Catholic church on Sunday that left at least 57 dead and more than 70 wounded.

Send in the clowns.

The liberal progressive’s last gasp before the midterm election was eerily appropriate.  Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert ascended on Washington to rally the troops, and they attracted a crazed crowd with their antics.  (See Comedians’ pre-election rally throngs Washington for details.)

I wish they had included Barney Frank, Chris Dodd, Harry Reid, Nancy Pelosi, and a host of other left-leaning progressives as featured entertainers.  They are clowns too, so they would have fit in nicely.  We’ve grown accustomed to watching them on television as they try to explain the unexplainable.  It’s hilarious.  Take Barney Frank, for instance.  His boyfriend was running a homosexual prostitution ring out of his apartment, and Frank said that he didn’t know about it.  If that’s not prime time comedic material, I don’t know what is.

And what about Nancy Pelosi?  She looked like a joker carrying her oversized gavel into our Capitol to put the final touches on Obamacare before the final vote.  Pelosi’s wide-eyed “dear in the headlights” look has become her trademark.  It makes her an endearing slapstick comedian.  She might have stolen the show with her nonsensical rambling.  At least she would have given Colbert and Stewart some competition.

Thankfully, the election is over; we’ve all been entertained; and now it’s time to get down to serious business.  The next Congress has a lot of work to do cleaning up the mess created by President Obama and his liberal progressive comrades.
