Isaiah 40: 18-20—To whom then will you liken God? Or what likeness will you compare with Him? As for the idol, a craftsman casts it, a goldsmith plates it with gold, and a silversmith fashions chains of silver. He who is too impoverished for such an offering selects a tree that does not rot; he seeks out for himself a skillful craftsman to prepare an idol that will not totter.

Shalu shalom Yerushalayim: Pray for the peace of Jerusalem. (Psalm 122: 6)

Scripture of the day:

Isaiah 40: 18-20—To whom then will you liken God?  Or what likeness will you compare with Him?  As for the idol, a craftsman casts it, a goldsmith plates it with gold, and a silversmith fashions chains of silver.  He who is too impoverished for such an offering selects a tree that does not rot; he seeks out for himself a skillful craftsman to prepare an idol that will not totter.

SnyderTalk Editorial: August 10, 2010, a date which will live in infamy

I live on Lake Hartwell in South Carolina.  During the housing boom that turned into a bubble, real estate prices on lakefront property went through the roof.  At the height of the bubble, people were gladly paying $350,000 or more for shacks if they were on the lake, and the houses weren’t fit to live in.  Things came to a screeching halt in the summer of 2006.  The “great collapse of 2008” put an exclamation point on the foolishness.

I had a neighbor on the lake who owns a real estate brokerage firm.  She lived in a nice house, but she thought she “needed” a bigger, grander place.  She started a remodeling project that morphed into a reconstruction project.  By the time it was finished, she must have put more than a $1,000,000 into her new home.  But she thought she “needed” more than a better house.  She also bought a bigger, grander dock to go with her new house and 2 nice new boats.  That’s not all she bought, but you get the picture.  Her new house was completed in 2006 at the height of the housing bubble—precisely when the real estate market on the lake disintegrated.  The debt on all those purchases and the reduction in income from real estate sales were her perfect storm.  A few months ago, she sold her house for just over $600,000, and she sold many of the other extras too.  I felt sorry for her, but there was nothing I could do about it.

What if our homeowners association had decided to bail out our neighbor?  We could have increased our association dues and paid off her debt so she could continue living in her grand new house, but we didn’t.  We saw what she was doing and wondered about it.  I’m not a real estate broker, but I could see that real estate buyers on Lake Hartwell were totally out of touch with reality.  Why should I pay for her bad bets on the real estate market?  And I’m not alone.  No one who lives in my community even hinted that we should pay for her mistakes.

On August 10, 2010, Congress passed legislation that will bail out states that have lavished themselves in luxury for years—states like New York, California, Michigan, and Connecticut.  They failed to take the necessary steps to get their fiscal houses in order so the rest of us are being forced by our elected officials to pay for their extravagance.  In the end, we all lose.  The states receiving cash infusions from the federal government won’t have to grapple with the difficult choices they have to make—at least for a few more months.  The taxpayers, our children, and our grandchildren are the big losers though.  We are pouring our hard-earned dollars into the bottomless pits of state governments gone wild.  It’s just a temporary reprieve.  Nothing of substance has been accomplished.  They’ll be back for more very soon if they don’t change their ways.

I’m not willing to pay for my neighbors mistakes.  She built a house that she couldn’t afford and didn’t need, and she had to face the consequences.  If I had a vote, I would not agree to pay for mistakes made by legislators in other states either, but I don’t have a vote.  I have to depend on my legislators to make reasonable choices, but they have let me down—again.

Paraphrasing FDR, “August 10, 2010, a date which will live in infamy.”  Pogo said it differently.  “We have met the enemy, and they is us.”  We can’t continue throwing money at problems hoping against hope that they will miraculously disappear.  Business as usual is not the answer, and that’s exactly what we’re getting from our elected officials.  It’s time to stop the madness.  It’s time to elect a Congress with a modicum of common sense, a Congress that is willing to make the difficult choices that each one of us has had to make in our private lives.  The president and the Congress are leading us down the path to total fiscal collapse.  Thankfully November 2010 is right around the corner.  I’m hoping for real change.
