A Broader and More Accurate Perspective on the Syrian Civil War

In an article for The Jerusalem Post, Uriel Heilman provides a glimpse of Israel’s predicament by focusing on stories he was told by Syrian “refugees” to Europe:

Israel’s government is in cahoots with Syrian President Bashar Assad. America wants to keep the Syrian civil war going for as long as possible. Russia is outmaneuvering the United States on the global stage.

Those are some of the viewpoints you’re likely to hear if you talk politics with Syrians pouring out of their war-torn country and into Europe.

When I went to Berlin recently to write about the wave of migrants arriving in Germany, one of the questions I was most curious about was something that had nagged at me since the regime of Syrian President Bashar Assad began bombing its own people back in 2011: Now that you see the true face of your government, do you look at its longtime adversary, Israel, any differently? Could the enemy of your enemy be your friend?

But when it came to their views on Israel, there seemed to be more conspiracy theory than political theory. And I was surprised (though I probably shouldn’t have been) that for many Syrians, the defining element of their identity is sectarian rather than national, and therefore they’re more concerned with the divides among Alawites, Sunnis, Shiites and Kurds than the divide between Arab and Jew.

“Israel and Bashar [Assad] – same-same,” said Khalid el-Hassan, a 17-year-old from the Syrian coastal city of Tartus who recently made his way to Berlin.

El-Hassan cited the quietude that for years prevailed along the Syria-Israel border and Assad’s repeated failure to respond to Israeli airstrikes in Syria both during the civil war and before it.

Emad Khalil, a 22-year-old law student from Aleppo, repeated a myth that is widely accepted as fact across the Arab Middle East: that the two stripes on the Israeli flag represent the Nile and the Euphrates rivers, and the Star of David is a sign that the Jews seek to control all the land in between, from Egypt to Iraq.

“You come to visit Syria, OK. You come to take our land, not OK,” he said.

When I told Khalil the myth about the flag had no truth to it, he shrugged.

“I saw it on a documentary,” he said.

To be sure, I heard a range of viewpoints expressed, from the Syrian Kurd who was curious about teachers’ salaries in Tel Aviv to the bereaved Syrian mother who asked me why, if we’re all children of Adam and Eve, can’t we just get along?

To my Western ear, many of the Syrians’ convictions sounded outlandish, incoherent or ignorant. I mostly suppressed the urge to argue, however. My aim wasn’t to convince them why they were wrong, but to get a sense of how they see the world.

Syrian “refugees” provide convincing proof that the lies Arab Muslim leaders have been spreading about Israel for almost 70 years have taken hold. They aren’t unlike other Arab Muslims in countries surrounding Israel. Few of them have any idea what the truth is.

They see Israel as the source of all their problems and view the elimination of Israel as a necessity. Palestinian leaders take full advantage of that fact and use them and people like them to do their dirty work.

Those “random acts of violence” in Israel that we hear so much about aren’t random at all. They are carefully orchestrated to produce specific results. The puppet masters pulling the strings include Yasser Arafat (now deceased), Mahmoud Abbas, Khaled Meshaal, and Ismail Haniyeh to name just a few. They are the primary instigators, but there are many others whose names you have never heard.

The ringleaders get tons of cash from gullible Western donors and countries like Iran, and they have embedded themselves in every country in the region. For example, until recently Syria was the home of Hamas even though they had political control of Gaza. Additionally, for several years a branch of Hamas has been operating out of Turkey. None of this bodes well for Israel, and it is taking place under the not-so-watchful eye of the Obama regime. People who read SnyderTalk know that because it’s reported here.

Turkey’s role shouldn’t be underestimated. That said, the Turkish people may have had enough of Recep Tayyip Erdoğan. While President Obama was offering his condolences to the Turkish president for the recent bombing that cost nearly 100 Turkish lives, the Turkish people were rallying against their president. They are beginning to understand what his shenanigans will cost them, and many of them don’t like it.

Right now, Erdoğan is moving toward November 1^st elections with reckless abandon in hopes of establishing the AK Party that he founded as the political party in Turkey with Erdoğan at the helm. He wants dictatorial control, and he is likely to get it unless the Turkish people stop him. They are dealing with a thoroughly ruthless man who intends to get what he wants any way he can.

The articles below provide background information on a broad range of developments in Turkey even though they focus on the recent bombing:

Don’t rule out Erdoğan’s personal culpability directly or indirectly in anything happening in or to his country. He has been doing his utmost to recreate something like the Ottoman Empire for more than 10 years. In the process, he has been playing all ends from the middle and has contributed to destabilization throughout the region. The consequences for his nefarious meddling are coming home to roost.

Erdoğan’s actions at home have pitted his fellow Islamists against rational Turks with common sense. That friction has destabilized Turkey to the point where anything can happen. Civil war in Turkey isn’t out of the question. If civil war does break out, Erdoğan will use whatever and whomever he can to rally support for himself and for the AKP.

Of course, Erdoğan will blame ISIS or PKK or some other group, but he is at least partly responsible. His ulterior motives are becoming clear. Regrettably, the Turkish people will have to pay the price for his misdeeds the same as U.S. citizens will have to pay the price for President Obama’s transgressions.

To me, the most troubling aspect of this is Barack Obama’s close personal friendship with Erdoğan. I suspect that the two of them are working together behind the scenes to achieve goals that Obama won’t talk about publicly. He certainly didn’t address them in his 60 Minutes interview Sunday night.

Despite what Obama says, Russia’s and China’s intervention in the Syrian Civil War took Obama and Erdoğan by surprise. They are scurrying around trying to deal with the rapidly changing situation. In the process, they are moving us toward a confrontation the likes of which we haven’t seen since World War II.

Some believe that we are witnessing the beginning of World War III. I don’t agree. I think World War III started in 1993 when the Oslo Accords were signed, but I’m just guessing. It’s hard to pin down a date and say definitively when anything started. That will be the job of historians in years to come.

Whatever the case may be, Obama’s and Erdoğan’s actions and inaction made Russian intervention in Syria inevitable. They should have seen it coming. Who knows? Maybe they did.

Below are a few things that we know:

Russia and Iran are taking control in Syria and Iraq.
Obama’s actions and inaction have destabilized the Middle East region and especially Israel.
Turkey is a destabilizing force in the Middle East.
China has entered the fray.
At this point, the Gulf States are opposed to the Russia-Iran-China axis. That could change.
Under Obama, the U.S. is no longer Israel’s staunch ally.
Syrian “refugees”, mostly military age males, are moving to Europe by the millions. Their impact will be felt immediately and Europe as we know it will be history sooner than most people realize unless something is done to solve the problem.
Israel is about to have a formidable military force on her NE border in the Golan. There is nothing that Obama and Erdoğan can do to stop it.
Thanks to Obama, soon Iran will have nuclear weapons, plenty of money to pay for them, and enough left over to fund their global terror network.

Karin Laub and Mohammed Daraghmeh—Jewish and Muslim groups raise temperature at Temple Mount:

Jewish and Muslim grassroots groups, self-declared defenders of their faiths, have played a key role in rising Israeli-Palestinian tensions, stepping up activities at a contested Jerusalem shrine at the heart of the current violence.

Each side has accused the other of causing provocations, as religious activists become more organized.

Israel pins much of the blame on a domestic fundamentalist group, the Islamic Movement, saying it whipped up Palestinian anger with claims that Israel is plotting to take over the Muslim-run site. Those claims, dismissed by Israel as incitement, reflect widespread Palestinian fears fueled by the doubling of Jewish visits to the shrine since 2010.

Backed by senior Israeli politicians, activists have become more vocal in demanding Jewish prayer rights on the mount. Some call for the site’s partition and the rebuilding of the biblical Jewish Temple that once stood there.

“As more and more Jews are going up, it is clear that this is bringing us closer to the immediate goal of prayer (rights), and afterward, the Temple,” said Elishama Sandman, 19, who has led Jewish tours on the mount.

Muslim activists have also beefed up their presence in recent years, with funding and logistical support from the Islamic Movement and Palestinian factions in the West Bank.

Jonathan Spyer—Toward the Abyss in Jerusalem?:

The first rains that follow the High Holy Days have come to Jerusalem. As always, a blessed relief. But no relief seems imminent from the renewed tensions that have descended on the city. A series of brutal murders and attempted murders of Israeli Jewish civilians by Palestinian Arab Muslims have taken place over the last two weeks. These have occurred against a backdrop of violent demonstrations and protests in Jerusalem, the West Bank, and increasingly among Israel’s Arab citizens.

For five years, Israel has lived a strange and contradictory reality. The Arab world is in an advanced state of meltdown. A number of formerly strong states have effectively ceased to exist. Syria, Iraq, Yemen are today merely names for areas in which sectarian militias battle one another. These states have collapsed along their ethnic and sectarian faultlines. The results have been bloody and are not yet over.

Yet on the edge of all this, the area between the Jordan River and the Mediterranean Sea has remained quiet. An anomaly. This is the only place of non-Muslim sovereignty between Europe and India. The existence of a sovereign area successfully defended by the Jews – a group traditionally despised and ridiculed by Muslims – has long been a source of rage and humiliation for both Sunni and Shia.

Why then, at a time when religious and sectarian identity was everywhere breaking through the thin membrane of ‘national’ and ‘state’ loyalty had this area of non-Muslim sovereignty been spared major strife?

SnyderTalk Comment: No matter how hard they try, no one can leave Yahweh out of this discussion.

Most Israelis don’t want to spark violence by claiming their right to the Temple Mount. Palestinians are looking for a way to spark more violence, and the Temple Mount is a convenient excuse.

We call Israel the Promised Land because Yahweh promised it to Abraham’s descendants through Isaac and Jacob/Israel. It includes all of Israel today plus much more land. Arab Muslims know this, and they are determined to prevent Yahweh from fulfilling His promises.

Mount Moriah, the Temple Mount, is unique. This is what Yahweh said about it:

“For now I have chosen and consecrated this house that My Name may be there forever, and My eyes and My heart will be there perpetually.” (2 Chronicles 7: 16)

It’s the only place on the face of the planet where Yahweh said His Name will reside forever. This problem won’t go away. Violence will increase. Politicians can’t solve it.

This is Yahweh’s doing. At some point, the Israeli people will have to accept that fact. They don’t want more trouble, but the trouble they are trying to avoid is the least of their worries. They should fear Yahweh, not Palestinians.

Remember Elijah and Gideon. They are great examples to follow in this instance.

Boaz Ganor—Terrorism Epidemic:

We are experiencing a deluge of “self-initiated” attacks, each beginning and ending in the raging mind of an incensed young man or woman. This wave of attacks is shedding more Palestinian blood than Israeli. The solution is to end the incitement, and to get back on the track of productive discussion between the Israeli and Palestinian leaderships.

The PA must pause the diplomatic campaign it is waging against Israel, and both sides must increase security cooperation in recognition of mutual interests.

Arsen Ostrovsky—Why Is the World Ignoring a Wave of Terror in Israel?:

In the last week, Israel has come under an unprecedented wave of Palestinian terror. Yet somehow the international community is silent in the face of this onslaught. Imagine for a moment if people were being mown down with cars, guns or knives by Islamic terrorists on the streets of central London, Paris, Washington or Moscow. How would leaders of those countries react?

Israelis, like all people, have the right to live in safety and security, free from terror. And our government and security forces have an obligation to take whatever action is necessary to ensure this. Attacks like these do not occur in a vacuum. They are the direct result of a pervasive Palestinian infrastructure indoctrinating hate, inciting violence, and instilling a worldview justifying such gruesome acts.

Elhanan Miller—Palestinian incitement or deeper malaise? Depends which Israeli official you ask:

While Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has highlighted “incitement” as the main cause for the surge in Palestinian terror and violence in Israel and the West Bank, senior Israeli security officials, intimately acquainted with the Palestinian scene, are painting a more complex picture, one that is sometimes outright contradictory to that of the prime minister.

In numerous recent speeches, Netanyahu has singled out Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas as a primary source of incitement. On Sunday, he accused Arab MK Hanin Zoabi of the same crime, as well as the Islamic Movement in Israel.

But the Israeli security officials, who have been making their position clear to Israeli journalists in recent days, identify a host of reasons for the Palestinian violence — the perceived danger to the al-Aqsa Mosque in Jerusalem being only one of them, and perhaps just a symptom of a deeper malaise.

A young Palestinian generation, which did not experience the terrible cost of the Second Intifada, they argue, has come of age with no hope for a better future. Nearly all the perpetrators of this week’s attacks against Jews are under 20 years old, and can barely remember the Second Intifada, which erupted in September 2000 and all but died down by 2004. This generation is alienated from the Palestinian Authority, which has been unable to realize any of the national Palestinian goals, including statehood and the release of prisoners, the officials said.

Liz Sly—Did US weapons supplied to Syrian rebels draw Russia into the conflict?:

American antitank missiles supplied to Syrian rebels are playing an unexpectedly prominent role in shaping the Syrian battlefield, giving the conflict the semblance of a proxy war between the United States and Russia, despite President Obama’s express desire to avoid one.

The U.S.-made BGM-71 TOW missiles were delivered under a two-year-old covert program coordinated between the United States and its allies to help vetted Free Syrian Army groups in their fight against President Bashar al-Assad. Now that Russia has entered the war in support of Assad, they are taking on a greater significance than was originally intended.

So successful have they been in driving rebel gains in northwestern Syria that rebels call the missile the “Assad Tamer,” a play on the word Assad, which means lion. And in recent days they have been used with great success to slow the Russian-backed offensive aimed at recapturing ground from the rebels.

Since Wednesday, when Syrian troops launched their first offensive backed by the might of Russia’s military, dozens of videos have been posted on YouTube showing rebels firing the U.S.-made missiles at Russian-made tanks and armored vehicles belonging to the Syrian army. Appearing as twirling balls of light, they zigzag across the Syrian countryside until they find and blast their target in a ball of flame.

The rebels claim they took out 24 tanks and armored vehicles on the first day, and the toll has risen daily since then.

SnyderTalk Comment: It’s a proxy war alright, but Russia vs. the U.S. is only part of it. The bigger and more significant part is Russia-Iran vs. the Gulf States. When Russia and Iran have established a stronghold on Israel’s NE border, the war will involve Israel. That’s a serious problem.

Moshe Feiglin—Welcome to the “New Middle East”:

On September 30, Palestinian Authority Chairman Mahmoud Abbas gave a speech to the United Nations General Assembly in which he outlined the unilateral steps he intends to take to achieve Palestinian sovereignty in the territories and east Jerusalem without reaching a peace agreement with Israel. Abbas’s speech revealed his basic stance, which includes unequivocal support for terror, a racist attitude toward the Jewish people, an entrenched hatred for Israel, and a will to destroy it.

Now that the Sukkot holiday is over, we are back to dealing with the storm outside. And stormy it is.

Just last week, Putin’s puppet “Parliament” – authorized the deployment of Russian troops outside Russia’s borders, “strictly to preserve Russia’s vital interests and not to implement foreign policy”. Or as they would have us believe, Russia is acting out of self defense and not out of an expansionist policy. Russia’s military action in Syria, however, has everything to do with expansionism.

Howard Altman—Very little peace to be found in the Middle East:

“Where to begin?”

That’s the question Bill Fallon asks me when I ask him about his thoughts on the status of things in his old bailiwick.

For 378 days between March 2007 and March 2008, Fallon, an admiral, ran U.S. Central Command. Headquartered at MacDill Air Force Base, it oversees U.S. military operations in the most dangerous and discombobulated swath of the planet.

About the most encouraging thing you can say about what’s taking place in the Centcom region these days is that nothing’s blowing up in Glorious Kazakhstan.

At least not at the moment.

Almost any place you look at in the 20-nation region that stretches west from Egypt, there is turmoil, often on an unprecedented scale.

“It’s a mess everywhere,” Fallon says.

SnyderTalk Comment: It’s just getting started. If you think it’s “a mess” now, just wait.

Soeren Kern—Germany: Migrant Crime Wave, Police Capitulate:

According to a classified document, the German government now estimates that Germany will receive as many as 1.5 million asylum seekers in 2015, including 920,000 in the last quarter of 2015 alone. With family reunifications, the actual number of asylum seekers could swell to more than 7 million. Separately, German authorities now estimate that at least 290,000 migrants and refugees have entered the country without being registered.
“The behavior of these highly delinquent youths towards police officers can be characterized as aggressive, disrespectful and condescending. … When they are arrested, they resist and assault [police officers]. The youths have no respect for state institutions.” — Confidential report, leaked to Die Welt.
In Berlin, a classified police report revealed that a dozen Arab clans hold reign over the city’s criminal underworld. The report says the clans, which are dedicated to dealing drugs, robbing banks and burglarizing department stores, run a “parallel justice system” in which they resolve disputes among themselves with mediators from other crime families. If the state gets involved, the clans use cash payments or threats of violence to influence witnesses.
“For years the policy has been to leave the population in the dark about the actual crime situation… The citizens are being played for fools.” — André Schulz, head of the Association of Criminal Police.
According to the President of the German Police Union, “In Berlin or in the north of Duisburg there are neighborhoods where colleagues hardly dare to stop a car — because they know that they’ll be surrounded by 40 or 50 men.” These attacks amount to a “deliberate challenge to the authority of the state — attacks in which the perpetrators are expressing their contempt for our society.”

The Shooter’s Log—President Obama: Okay to ‘Politicize’ Oregon Shootings:

Within moments of police confirmation that a violent criminal, Chris Harper-Mercer, had murdered students at a Roseburg, Oregon community college, President Obama said on Oct. 1 the shootings should be “politicized.”

In a statement delivered by the president on the “Shootings at Umpqua Community College, Roseburg, Oregon,” held in the James S. Brady Press Briefing Room at 6:22 p.m. EDT, President Obama said, “Well, this is something we should politicize. It is relevant to our common life together, to the body politic.”

Obama also said in those remarks following the shooting that the only way to halt “gun violence” was for voters to choose politicians in 2016 who would vote to disarm citizens:

He said, “And it will require that the American people, individually, whether you are a Democrat or a Republican or an independent, when you decide to vote for somebody, are making a determination as to whether this cause of continuing death for innocent people should be a relevant factor in your decision. If you think this is a problem, then you should expect your elected officials to reflect your views.”

SnyderTalk Comment: Since the day he took office, Obama has tried to politicize every incident that he believes supports his warped view of reality especially where guns and ammunition are concerned.

See “Obama: Police who arrested professor ‘acted stupidly’”. In this instance, police were responding to a 911 call. A neighbor told police that someone was trying to break into the house, so they treated it as a break in. The owner could have settled the matter quickly and easily by explaining the facts to the police, but instead, he chose to berate the police for doing their job. This was an example of a belligerent person with an agenda creating suspicions that couldn’t be sorted out at the scene.

See “Timeline: Michael Brown shooting in Ferguson, Mo.”. In this instance, a criminal thug robbed a convenience store and assaulted the police officer who responded to the call. Brown attempted to take the policeman’s pistol and was shot in the process. He started to flee, but changed his mind and charged at the police officer who shot him again and killed him in self-defense.

The Umpqua Community College shooting was a terrorist act. The shooter asked the people he shot if they were Christians before he pulled the trigger.

There are many more examples. None of them support Obama’s plan to disarm lawful gun owners.

Contrast Obama’s actions in these examples with the Fort Hood shooting. See “Fort Hood shooting victim denied benefits, despite Purple Heart decision”. In this instance, the shooter, Major Nidal Hasan, was an Islamist terrorist. At first, the incident was called workplace violence. Later, it was called a terrorist attack. To this day, it has not been called an Islamist terrorist attack.

Obama has an agenda. Facts don’t alter his perspective or his verbiage. He continues to push his agenda despite the obvious problems with it. We still have more than a year to go before this madness is over.

The person we elect as president really does matter.

SnyderTalk Comment: If even one person who was victimized had been allowed to carry a weapon, the shooter could have been stopped. This incident supports the case for concealed carry on college campuses. It’s the exact opposite of what Obama wants to achieve. That’s par for the course. He can’t or won’t learn. That, too, is par for the course.

That’s a mistake on India’s part. It will become apparent in the days ahead.

SnyderTalk Comment: To understand what this means, you have to understand the significance of the chant you hear at Palestinian peace protests:

“From the river to the sea, Palestine will be free.”

This video taken at UC Berkeley about a year ago is one example. Similar events have been held all across this country for many years now, and the effects are significant.

The river is the Jordan River. The sea is the Mediterranean Sea. “From the river to the sea” means that there is no Israel.

Make no mistake, the Palestinian’s goal is and always has been the annihilation Israel. Siding with them is taking sides against Yahweh. That’s foolish.

7 “Then you shall make curtains of goats’ hair for a tent over the tabernacle; you shall make eleven curtains in all. 8 The length of each curtain shall be thirty cubits, and the width of each curtain four cubits; the eleven curtains shall have the same measurements. 9 You shall join five curtains by themselves and the other six curtains by themselves, and you shall double over the sixth curtain at the front of the tent. 10 You shall make fifty loops on the edge of the curtain that is outermost in the first set, and fifty loops on the edge of the curtain that is outermost in the second set.”
