It Would Have Been Easier to Take the Impeachment Charges Against President Trump Seriously If…

The Senate did exactly what it should have done.  It acquitted President Trump after an impeachment trial that never should have been.

It would have been easier to take the impeachment charges against President Trump seriously if…

  1. …Democrats hadn’t fabricated “Russia collusion” charges against the president that were based entirely on a discredited dossier that was paid for by the Hillary Clinton campaign, hand delivered to FBI Director James Comey and leaked to the press by him, and investigated by a team of ardent Hillary Clinton supporters. The failure of the “Russia collusion” effort didn’t embarrass Democrats.  It emboldened them and made them want to try harder.  To this day, House impeachment manager Adam Schiff insists that he has concrete evidence of “Russia collusion”, but he refuses to present it and he didn’t bring it up during the House impeachment process.
  2. …Democrat operatives in the establishment media hadn’t hired hit squads after President Trump won the 2016 election and ordered them to dig up dirt on the president that could be used to impeach him. They didn’t try to hide what they were doing.  They boldly announced it to the public.  After President Trump was inaugurated, it took the Washington Post less than 20 minutes to publish an article in which it declared that the impeachment process had begun.
  3. …Democrats in Congress had not said on national television that their only hope for defeating President Trump in the 2020 election was to charge him with impeachment in the House and convict him in the Senate and thereby prevent him from seeking re-election.
  4. …Democrats in House had not run for prominent positions in the House by declaring that they were most qualified to lead an impeachment effort.
  5. …Speaker Pelosi had not told Democrat House freshmen who ran for Congress on a promise to impeach the president that she had a plan for making it happen.
  6. …the whistleblower had not been very close to House Intelligence Committee Chair Adam Schiff and his staff and other prominent Democrats, and he had not been widely known as a rabid Democrat partisan.
  7. …the impeachment investigation in the House had been fair and the president had been given due process.
  8. …the president’s attorneys had been allowed to call and cross-examine witnesses during the House impeachment investigation.
  9. …House committee chairs had called the witnesses in the House that they wanted the Senate to call.
  10. …prominent Democrats had not been boldly chanting “Impeach 45” since inauguration day.
  11. …Democrat candidates for president in 2020 were not running for office by promising to abolish the Electoral College, because Hillary Clinton won the popular vote in the 2016 presidential election by a small margin and lost the Electoral College vote by a landslide.
  12. …the articles of impeachment had included at least one criminal offense.  No wrongdoing, no crime.

What about witnesses?

I have not said this before, but I would have preferred that the Senate call witnesses.  Calling John Bolton to testify did not bother me.  He is a showboat.  There are many people in Washington like Bolton.  They make names for themselves and fortunes by claiming to know more than everybody else about everything under the sun, but they never run for office and expose their ideas to voters for proper vetting.

Since Bolton was national security advisor, there is a good likelihood that President Trump would not have allowed him to testify unless the Supreme Court ordered him to testify.  Even if Bolton had testified, I believe the fact that he had policy differences with the president would have proven him to be an untrustworthy witness.  Bolton may sell millions of copies of his book to disgruntled Democrats, but his testimony in the Senate would not have won over two-thirds of the senators.

Allowing Democrats to call Mick Mulvaney and John Bolton as witnesses in the Senate impeachment trial would have opened the door for calling Joe Biden and Hunter Biden as witnesses.  Throughout the Senate impeachment trial, House impeachment managers repeatedly asserted that Joe and Hunter Biden had nothing to do with the matter before the Senate.  In fact, what they did in Ukraine had everything to do with the impeachment charges brought against President Trump in the House.

What about Joe and Hunter Biden?

Joe Biden was Vice President of the United States.  Barack Obama delegated to him responsibility for overseeing U.S. government policy as it pertains to Ukraine.  Joe Biden took his son Hunter with him to Ukraine on an official visit during which Hunter made deals with corrupt Ukrainians that made him a very wealthy man.  Joe did the same thing in China, and Hunter got ever richer.

Most ordinary Americans are not familiar with the way the game is played in Washington.  Corrupt activities by politicians are shielded slightly so that the guilty parties have what is referred to as “plausible deniability”.  Joe Biden knows how the game is played.  He has been playing the game for decades.

Joe Biden knows better than most what taking Hunter with him on an official visit to Ukraine meant to Ukrainian officials.  It was like a mafia don taking a lieutenant with him on a shakedown and introducing him to the intended victim as his protégé.  Nothing more is required.  The message is clear.  Everybody knows that it means.

Biden threatening to withhold funds that had been earmarked for Ukraine unless Ukrainian officials fired a prosecutor who was investigating Burisma Holdings for corruption was evidence of Joe’s abuse of power and his violation of U.S. law.  He bragged about doing it on video.  He doesn’t have plausible deniability for that crime.  Joe is not a smart man.

If the Bidens had been called to testify in President Trump’s impeachment trial in the Senate, those crimes would have been exposed, and President Trump would have been shown to be doing the job we elected him to do.  The president’s attorneys were right about the amount of time it would have taken for all of this to play out.  It would have taken many months.  That’s why the Senate didn’t want to get into the business of calling witnesses that should have been called in the House.

President Trump is Not Guilty, but Justice wasn’t Served

The Senate acquitted President Trump.  That’s what should have happened and that’s what we have known all along would happen.

But justice was not served in the Senate yesterday.  House Democrats were not censured for their thoroughly partisan chicanery, and Senate Democrats were not exposed as the charlatans they are.  Those things should have happened, too.  In civil courts, what Democrats did in the House and Senate is called malicious prosecution.

Even so, decent Americans got the message loud and clear.  In the midst of the Senate impeachment trial, President Trump’s approval rating rose to its highest level to date.  In November 2020, the president’s approval rating will wipe out his Democrat opponent no matter who it is.

Democrats played the only card they had, and they lost.  For Democrats, President Trump’s acquittal in the Senate yesterday is just the beginning of a losing process that could last for a generation.

What about Mitt Romney?

Mitt Romney broke ranks with his Republican colleagues in the Senate and voted to impeach President Trump for abuse of power.  The New Yorker called Mitt’s treachery an “act of political courage”.  It wasn’t.  It was a petty act stemming from political desperation and political expedience.

Mitt still thinks he has a shot at becoming president.  He’s running now for the 2024 Republican nod.  He didn’t learn his lesson in 2012. You can’t win as a Republican by trying to curry the favor of Democrats.

Mitt made several mistakes, but the biggest one by far was invoking Yahweh in his Senate speech.  Mitt didn’t actually say Yahweh’s Name, but he referred to Him nonetheless.  Yahweh knows when people are referring to Him.

Mitt was lying through his teeth.  Invoking Yahweh was a very bad idea, because Mitt was engaged in self-serving pomposity.

Romney doesn’t have a bright future. He will learn that soon enough.  When Democrats laud your actions, it’s a really bad sign.

In 2016, Mitt predicted doom and gloom for the nation under President Trump’s administration.  The exact opposite has happened.  Mitt was running for president then, and he’s running for president now. As I said, this time Mitt went too far by invoking Yahweh.

President Trump didn’t take kindly to Mitt’s remarks more than 3 years ago. Below was the president’s response.  Saying that there is bad blood between Mitt and the president is putting it mildly.

What about Nancy Pelosi?

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi made an ass of herself following the president’s State of the Union Address on Tuesday night.  As quickly as President Trump finished delivering his remarks, Pelosi tore up the written copy of his speech that the president had given her.

Pelosi was standing right behind the president.  She knew that she was on live television when she did it, so she made dramatic gestures to convey her deep-seated animosity toward the president for the world to see.  It was a follow-up to the comment she made several weeks ago: “Impeachment is forever.”

Pelosi’s juvenile behavior (or was it senile behavior?) will last forever, too.  It will go down in infamy.  Video clips of Pelosi tearing up President Trump’s speech will accompany videos of him being acquitted by the Senate.  Acquittal lasts forever, too.

This much is certain: Any decent person who saw what Pelosi did now knows that she is a petty, pathetic person.

Pelosi will be remembered forever for 2 things:

  1. As Speaker of the House, she is the person who told her colleagues in the House this about Obamacare: “We have to pass the bill, so you can find out what’s in it.”
  2. As Speaker of the House, she orchestrated a partisan political witch-hunt in the House to impeach a president that she knew Democrats could not defeat in an election.

Like Romney, Pelosi is desperate, too.  She did everything she could do to take down President Trump, and she failed miserably.  In the process, she revealed just how petty and pathetic House and Senate Democrats are.

Finally, Democrats are beginning to realize that the swamp is being drained in front of their eyes. Like swamp rats who are losing their home, they are frantic.

What about Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell?

Mitch McConnell did a masterful job throughout the impeachment process.  It started with his showdown with Pelosi over how the Senate would handle the impeachment trial.  Pelosi tried to dictate the terms, and McConnell told her in no uncertain terms, “No way.”

Pelosi was humiliated and embarrassed.  She couldn’t hide her feelings Tuesday night.  She knew that in less than 24 hours the president would be exonerated by the Senate despite her all-out effort to impeach him.  Again, like Mitt, Speaker Pelosi’s future isn’t bright.

Several days ago, McConnell gave a wonderful synopsis of the partisan impeachment process:

“The glory which You have given Me I have given to them, that they may be one, just as We are one; I in them and You in Me, that they may be perfected in unity, so that the world may know that You sent Me, and loved them, even as You have loved Me. Father, I desire that they also, whom You have given Me, be with Me where I am, so that they may see My glory which You have given Me, for You loved Me before the foundation of the world.” (John 17: 22-24)
