The Israel-Palestinian Conflict: It May Not be What You Think

Israel haters are about to get a rude awakening.  The numbers of Jewish and Arab refugees following Israel’s War of Independence and the assets they left behind are starting to roll out.  The numbers are not what we’ve been led to believe by the establishment media and by Palestinians.

Diehard Israel haters will be tempted to do what Nancy Pelosi did last week when she was handed a fact sheet dealing with refugees on our southern border.  She said, “I reject your facts.”

You can reject the facts, but you can’t change them.  As John Adams said, “Facts are stubborn things; and whatever may be our wishes, our inclinations, or the dictates of our passions, they cannot alter the state of facts and evidence.”

Look at the Facts

The number of Jewish refugees from Arab countries following Israel’s War of Independence in 1948 was more than 850,000.  Between 1948 and 1958, another 470,000 Jewish people left all their belongings and their homes in Arab countries.  See “Fact Sheet: Jewish Refugees from Arab Countries”.

The Jewish people in Arab countries didn’t wake up one morning and say, “Honey, let’s move.” They were forced to get out while the getting was good.

Many of the Jews who remained in Arab countries were murdered. The small number of Jews in Arab countries today are treated like dirt. They pay a tax for being non-Muslims. It’s called jizya. In theory, it’s a tax for protection. In reality, it’s organized crime, a racket.

At most, 650,000 Arabs left their homes in Israel during the War of Independence. The correct number is probably between 350,000 and 500,000.  See “Myths & Facts – The Refugees”.

The number of so-called “Palestinian refugees” has been inflated for political purposes. Today, the number used by UNRWA (the United Nations Relief and Works Agency) is 750,000.

The Arabs who left Israel were encouraged to leave by Arab leaders.  They were told that the war would be over in a few days, and they could return to their homes and take possession of Jewish assets as spoils of war.

Jews in Israel encouraged their Arab neighbors to stay and help them build a country.  Some did.  Today, they are called Israeli Arabs.  They and their descendants are Israeli citizens.

The value of assets left behind by Jews fleeing Arab countries far exceeded the value of assets that Arabs left behind when they decided to leave Israel.  Most of the Arabs saw leaving as a short vacation that would pay them handsome rewards.

See “Fact Sheet: Jewish Refugees from Arab Countries”:

Moreover, the value of Jewish property left behind and confiscated by the Arab governments is estimated to be at least 50 percent higher than the total value of assets lost by the Palestinian refugees.  In the 1950’s, John Measham Berncastle, under the aegis of the United Nations Conciliation Commission for Palestine, estimated that total assets lost by Palestinian refugees from 1948 – including land, buildings, movable property, and frozen bank accounts – amounted to roughly $350 million ($650 per refugee). Adding in an additional $100 million for assets lost by Palestinian refugees as a result of the Six Day War, an approximate total is $450 million – $4.4 billion in 2012 prices. By contrast, the value of assets lost by the Jewish refugees – compiled by a similar methodology – is estimated at $700 million – roughly $6.7 billion today.

Israel is seeking restitution.  See “Israel said set to seek $250b compensation for Jews forced out of Arab countries”:

Israel is preparing to demand compensation totaling a reported $250 billion from seven Arab countries and Iran for property and assets left behind by Jews who were forced to flee those countries following the establishment of the State of Israel.

“The time has come to correct the historic injustice of the pogroms (against Jews) in seven Arab countries and Iran, and to restore, to hundreds of thousands of Jews who lost their property, what is rightfully theirs,” Israel’s Minister for Social Equality, Gila Gamliel, who is coordinating the Israeli government’s handling of the issue, said Saturday.

Today’s Predicament

Things didn’t work out the way Arab leaders expected in Israel’s War of Independence.  They lost.

After the war, Arab leaders had lots of displaced Arabs on their hands.  Rather than integrate them in Arab countries, they decided to build refugee camps for them so that they would become permanent blights on their communities and bargaining chips in future negotiations.  That’s the predicament we face today.

The State of Israel integrated Jewish refugees from Arab countries at its own expense.  There are no Jewish refugee camps, and there is no U.N. agency for Jewish refugees.  With the help of Iran, Turkey, and other countries, Palestinians are attempting to make all of Israel a refugee camp for Jews as a step toward Israel’s eventual annihilation.

Please take the time to watch the videos below.  As Dennis Prager said, the Israel-Palestinian conflict is easy to understand but difficult to solve.  It’s not Israel’s fault.  After you watch the videos, you will understand why.

The Israel-Palestinian conflict was contrived to destroy Israel.  It’s as simple as that.  That’s what the facts show.

“The glory which You have given Me I have given to them, that they may be one, just as We are one; I in them and You in Me, that they may be perfected in unity, so that the world may know that You sent Me, and loved them, even as You have loved Me. Father, I desire that they also, whom You have given Me, be with Me where I am, so that they may see My glory which You have given Me, for You loved Me before the foundation of the world.” (John 17: 22-24)
