The “Gun Silencer” Bill Working Its Way through Congress

As she expressed her condolences to the victims of a mass shooting in Las Vegas, former Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton also sharply criticized the National Rifle Association and a bill working its way through Congress that would make it easier to buy gun silencers.

At least 58 people were killed and 515 were injured late Sunday night after a gunman opened fire on a crowd at a country music concert from a window on the 32nd floor of the Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino in Las Vegas.

“The crowd fled at the sound of gunshots. Imagine the deaths if the shooter had a silencer, which the NRA wants to make easier to get,” wrote Clinton on Twitter Monday morning after first saying she was grieving with “the victims, those who lost loved ones, the responders, & all affected by this cold-blooded massacre.”

Sound suppressors, a.k.a. “silencers”, are not silent. “Silencer” is a misleading slang term.

I own 3 sound suppressors. One of them is on a 9mm pistol. The other 2 are on AR15s.

The pistol will cycle subsonic ammo. The AR15s won’t.

“Cycle” means to operate the way it’s supposed to. “Subsonic” means that the bullet doesn’t break the sound barrier, so there is no sonic boom.

Why would a law-abiding citizen like me want a sound suppressor on a weapon?

My guns are for self-defense primarily. If my wife and I are ever forced to defend ourselves with guns, in all likelihood, we will be inside our house. Guns fired in enclosed spaces are much louder than guns fired outdoors because sound reverberates inside a room.

It’s deafening. It can destroy your hearing.

The bill working its way through Congress that Hillary Clinton mentioned is about hearing protection for people who are forced to defend themselves inside their homes. It’s called the “Hearing Protection Act” because that’s what it’s designed to accomplish.

When fired with sound suppression, my AR15s produce about 126 decibels.  Without sound suppression, they produce about 167 decibels.  Since decibel levels are recorded on a logarithmic scale, my AR15s without sound suppression are more than 8 times louder than they are with sound suppression.

Putting it into perspective:

  • Normal conversation is about 60 decibels.
  • A lawn mower is about 90 decibels.
  • A loud rock concert is about 120 decibels.

Bottom line: AR15s fired with sound suppression are very loud, but they aren’t loud enough to destroy your hearing.

Since my 9mm pistol will cycle subsonic ammo, it’s much quieter than my suppressed AR15s.  If I am ever forced to fire a weapon inside my home, I probably won’t be wearing hearing protection.  That’s why I need sound suppression.

Hillary Clinton and other “liberal progressives” want to abolish our 2nd Amendment rights. They oppose the Hearing Protection Act because they oppose gun ownership.  Their goal is to prevent any bill from passing in Congress that might help law-abiding citizens protect themselves.  They are the same people who enthusiastically support the premeditated murder of unborn children and who knowingly pursue political donations from sexual predators.

As far as I am concerned, that makes them hypocrites of the highest order and depraved human beings.

“The glory which You have given Me I have given to them, that they may be one, just as We are one; I in them and You in Me, that they may be perfected in unity, so that the world may know that You sent Me, and loved them, even as You have loved Me. Father, I desire that they also, whom You have given Me, be with Me where I am, so that they may see My glory which You have given Me, for You loved Me before the foundation of the world.” (John 17: 22-24)
