Samantha Mendeles and Samuel Westrop—American Islamists Turn to Ankara:

For the past few years, the international Muslim Brotherhood has found a welcoming home in Ankara in the face of opposition from Saudi Arabia, Egypt and the United Arab Emirates. Consequently, U.S. Islamist organizations have also turned to the Turkish regime for collaboration and support.

On September 18th, a Washington, D.C.- based organization, the Turkish American National Steering Committee (TASC), hosted an event in New York City with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan. “US-based Muslim Brotherhood supporters have a busy week coming up,” the Middle East analyst Eric Trager noted. “They’re hanging with Erdogan on Monday, protesting Sisi on Wednesday.”

Organizers of the TASC event included Ahmed Shehata, a lobbyist for the Muslim Brotherhood who has also worked for Islamic Relief and the Muslim American Society — two prominent Islamist groups designated as terrorist organizations by the United Arab Emirates in 2014.

Last year, following Turkish claims of an attempted coup against the regime, a TASC rally in support of Erdogan outside the White House included Shehata and a number of prominent American Islamist leaders, such as Nihad Awad, the Executive Director of the terror-linked Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR). As the Investigative Project on Terrorism notes, Erdogan’s Justice and Development Party subsequently sent a delegation to the United States to hold meetings with senior CAIR officials. Since then, Awad has continued to meet with representatives of the Turkish regime.

Such partnerships are not new. Since a coalition of U.S. Islamist organizations travelled to Turkey in 2014, prominent American Islamic groups linked to the Muslim Brotherhood have become some of Erdogan’s staunchest advocates in America.

Protesters were pummeled on Thursday during an appearance by Turkish president Recep Tayyip Erdogan at a Midtown hotel.

The violence erupted as Erdogan took the stage inside a ballroom at the Marriott Marquis hotel in Times Square.

“Terrorist!” a [demonstrator] shouted as he jumped on his chair, prompting security to rush him. “You’re a terrorist! Get out of my country!”

Erdogan supporters in the crowd erupted in shouts and boos and attempted to punch the man, climbing over security to take swings, video of the mayhem shows.

Another protester unfurled a banner for a banned Kurdish group and was escorted out. The scene quickly erupted into a free-for-all as bodyguards tried to escort the unwanted guests from the room.

Pandemonium followed a crowd of security as they barreled toward the doors of the room, according to video taken by a Turkish journalist.

Violence follows President Erdogan everyplace he goes.  That’s true in Turkey and abroad.

President Trump needs to talk with Erdogan privately and tell him that his behavior and the behavior of his followers are unacceptable.  Then he needs to make clear that Islamists won’t be allowed to provoke violence in the U.S. with impunity.  Law enforcement should be dispatched to make sure that Islamists are not permitted to run free here.

Finally, President Trump should tell Erdogan that if he can’t or won’t deal with the problems that he encourages, he will not be welcome here.

SnyderTalk Comment:

The coup attempt to which President Erdogan refers was manufactured.  Like the Mavi Marmara incident, Erdogan’s fingerprints are all over it.

Erdogan used both events to increase his stranglehold on power in Turkey, to turn Turkey into a dictatorship, and to expand his influence in the Middle East.

Stated simply, President Erdogan is a duplicitous man.  He can’t be trusted.

Keep your eyes on the TRIC nations: Turkey, Russia, Iran, and China.

“The glory which You have given Me I have given to them, that they may be one, just as We are one; I in them and You in Me, that they may be perfected in unity, so that the world may know that You sent Me, and loved them, even as You have loved Me. Father, I desire that they also, whom You have given Me, be with Me where I am, so that they may see My glory which You have given Me, for You loved Me before the foundation of the world.” (John 17: 22-24)
