Shoshana Bryen—The Perils of Not Listening to Iran:

Supporters of President Obama’s Iran deal (JCPOA) are starting to worry — but that is because they believed him when his lips moved. They heard “snapback sanctions” and pretended those were an actual “thing.” They are not, and never were. They heard Treasury Secretary Jack Lew say the U.S. would never allow Iran access to dollar trading because of the corruption of the Iranian banking system and Iranian support for terrorism — and they wanted to believe him. And sanctions? The administration said that sanctions related to non-nuclear Iranian behavior — support for terrorism, ballistic missile development, and more — would be retained.

Supporters believed Secretary Kerry when he said sanctions on Iran would be lifted only by a “tiny portion,” which would be “very limited, temporary and reversible… So believe me, when I say this relief is limited and reversible, I mean it.” They all but heard him stamp his loafer.

The mistake was not just listening to the administration say whatever it was Democrats in Congress wanted to hear, while knowing full well that once the train left the station it would never, ever come back. The bigger mistake was not listening to Iran. The Iranians have been clear and consistent about their understanding of the JCPOA.

Days before Congress failed to block the JCPOA, Maj. Gen. Hassan Firouzabadi, Chief of Staff of the Iranian Armed Forces, outlined Iran’s red lines.

  • To block “infiltration” of “Iran’s defense and security affairs under the pretext of nuclear supervision and inspection… Iranian military officials are not allowed to let the foreigners go through the country’s security-defense shield and fence.”
  • “Iran’s military officials are not at all allowed to stop the country’s defense development and progress on the pretext of supervision and inspection and the country’s defense development and capabilities should not be harmed in the talks.”
  • “Our support for our brothers in the resistance [Hezbollah, Assad, Yemeni Houthis, Hamas, Shiites in Iraq] in different places should not be undermined.”
  • A final deal should be a “comprehensive one envisaging the right for Iran to rapidly reverse its measures in case the opposite side refrains from holding up its end of the bargain.”
  • “Iran’s national security necessitates guaranteed irreversibility of the sanctions removal and this is no issue for bargaining, trade, or compromise.”
  • “Implementation… should totally depend on the approval of the country’s legal and official authorities and the start time for the implementation of undertakings should first be approved by the relevant bodies.”
  • Iran would not be limited in transferring its nuclear know-how to other countries of its choosing.

The Iranians deliberately and openly conflated what the Administration claimed would be limited sanctions relief related to specific Iranian actions on the nuclear program with the larger issues of sanctions for other Iranian behavior. The Iranians were confident that the Americans could be counted on not to collapse the whole discussion over violations along the edges. Their model was American behavior in the Israeli-Palestinian “peace process.” The Palestinians violate agreements and understandings with impunity because they know the Administration is more firmly wedded to the process than the specific issues on the table.

SnyderTalk Comment: The perils of not listening to Iranian leaders are real.  So are the perils of not listening to Islamist groups.

Unlike Western leaders, they are telling the truth.  Their goal is to create of a global caliphate under Sharia law.

That’s something that most Muslims don’t want.  We call them “ordinary peaceful Muslims” (OPMs).  They know better than others what happens when Islamists take control.

OPMs are Muslims in name only (MINOs).  They have more to fear than anyone because Islamists begin their assault by culling the Muslim ranks and reducing it to the true believers.  Many heads are lost in the process.

Why do you think so many Muslims are fleeing Syria?

Iran is an Islamist country and the largest state sponsor of global terrorism.  ISIS (a.k.a., ISIL and IS) is a cause behind which Islamist groups of various stripes rally.  Both Iran and ISIS are dangerous and both have declared war on the West.

Islamist resolve trumps anything we have seen from Western leaders.  Like Nero, Western leaders are playing the fiddle while Rome burns.

Referencing Rome is important to Islamists because in their minds, Rome stands for Christianity—i.e., the Roman Catholic Church.  Their fixation on the past rivals the Nazi quest to “scientifically” prove the “historical” superiority of the Aryan race.

It’s no surprise that Islamists chose to revive the Dark Ages.  It coincides with the birth and advance of Islam—the 600s A.D. to the 1100s A.D.

As Yogi Berra said, “It’s déjà vu all over again.”

Movements like this don’t die natural deaths.

1: Amos Harel—Israel Anticipates ISIS’ Downfall in Syria:

On the Syrian part of Mt. Hermon there is no longer a trace of the Syrian army. The last Syrian commandos abandoned their outposts last winter. There are now almost no locations along the Israeli-Syrian border on the Golan Heights where Israeli and Syrian soldiers are facing each other except for a weak Syrian presence at Quneitra.

More than a month after a cease-fire was declared in the Syrian civil war, Israel’s assessment that it would collapse is starting to be actualized, albeit much more slowly than first anticipated, as fighting has resumed in various parts of the country. The fact that the cease-fire does not include the Nusra Front and Islamic State allows the Assad regime and the Russian air force to attack them.

ISIS is having difficulty holding the large territory on which it declared its Islamic caliphate, especially in Syria. Its attackers include the U.S., Russia, the EU states, Turkey, the Assad regime and numerous Arab states and rebel groups, including Kurdish factions. The coalitions attacking ISIS have complete aerial superiority and the terror attacks it committed or inspired in Paris, Brussels, California and Sinai have only intensified the hostility toward it. A senior Israeli security source said, “The defeat of ISIS in Syria is a matter of time.”

SnyderTalk Comment: Like Hydra, the multi-headed character in Greek mythology, ISIS has many heads.  As long as one of them survives, it’s still alive.

2: Judith Bergman—Why Is Europe Still Funding Palestinian Terrorism?:

Last month, Palestinian Media Watch approached Danish Foreign Minister Kristian Jensen regarding his response to a question asked in the Danish Parliament about statements made by Abbas Zaki, a member of the Fatah Central Committee. In those statements, Zaki glorified terrorism against Israelis, stating that “Allah loves our young people with rocks and knives.” In his response, Jensen described Zaki’s words as “a sad example of inflammatory rhetoric,” but added that Denmark would not be reassessing whether Fatah remains a “moderate” partner for Denmark because Zaki is, in the words of the Danish foreign minister, “a Fatah member residing in Lebanon, who is not considered to have spoken on behalf of Fatah, the PLO, the Palestinian Authority or the Palestinian government. … The statement does not give the government any reason to reconsider the assessment of Fatah and the movement’s leader, President Abbas.”

There is always an excuse if you want one. However, Zaki does reside in the PA and even if he did not, it is completely irrelevant since PA President Mahmoud Abbas and his cohorts themselves are doing a terrific job of inciting, supporting and rewarding terrorism. PMW pointed this out to the Danish minister, saying that “not only does Zaki reside in the PA, but more importantly, Fatah has not been a moderating voice during this current terror campaign. On the contrary, Fatah and its senior leadership are actively promoting terror against Israelis, including the unequivocal glorification of those who have killed and injured Israelis in terror attacks.”

SnyderTalk Comment: Anti-Semitism is what Europeans do.  It’s as natural to them as breathing.  It’s so natural that they don’t even notice it.

Funding Palestinian terror is one of many examples.

3: Times of IsraelSeven times worse than Hamas: Bernie Sanders by the numbers:

Bernie Sanders exacerbated his shockingly under-informed address on Israel from late last month with an interview to the New York Daily News this week in which he casually traduced Israel.

In his March speech — which he said he would have delivered at AIPAC’s Washington policy conference if only they’d let him read it out over satellite — he demanded that Israel remove its blockade from Gaza while simultaneously professing to support Israelis’ “right to live in peace and security.” Needless to say — or rather, evidently, needful to say to Sanders — backing Israelis’ right to live in peace and security entails working to ensure that terrorist groups committed to Israel’s destruction are not allowed to import the weaponry they need to achieve that goal. Demanding that Israel end the Gaza blockade is tantamount to demanding that Hamas be enabled to freely bring in rockets, missiles and all manner of other military equipment to expedite Israel’s demise. Only a politician who supports Hamas — such as Turkey’s Recep Tayyip Erdogan — or one with a grossly inadequate understanding of Israel and its challenges could possibly endorse such a position.

In his New York Daily News interview, Sanders dismally reconfirmed that he falls into the latter category. The would-be president castigated Israel for an ostensibly “indiscriminate” war on Gaza in the summer of 2014, and, while admitting that he didn’t really know the facts, asserted, twice, that Israel killed over 10,000 innocent civilians in the course of that conflict.

SnyderTalk Comment: Bernie Sanders and Hillary Clinton are dangerous for the U.S., the world, and Israel in particular.

The Republican candidates aren’t perfect, but they dwarf the Democrat candidates.

4: Peace IndexPoll: Both Israeli Jews and Arabs Do Not See Peace in Coming Years:

76% of Israeli Jews and 62% of Israeli Arabs not believe that negotiations between Israel and the Palestinian Authority will lead in the coming years to peace between Israel and the Palestinians, according to the Peace Index Survey conducted on March 28-30, 2016, for the Evens Program for Mediation and Conflict Resolution at Tel Aviv University and the Guttman Center for Public Opinion and Policy Research of the Israel Democracy Institute.

69% of Jews and 76% of Arabs fear that they or someone important to them will be harmed in the current wave of terror attacks.

SnyderTalk Comment: Their fears aren’t phobias.

5: Washington PostBritish Prime Minister David Cameron acknowledges profiting from offshore trust:

After dodging questions for days, British Prime Minister David Cameron acknowledged Thursday evening that he had owned and profited from shares in an offshore trust set up by his late father.

The admission came as the impact from a huge leak of financial data continued to ripple across the globe, with Russian President Vladimir Putin alleging a Western conspiracy and Iceland reckoning with the fall of its prime minister.

Cameron himself faced calls to resign from at least one member of the opposition Labour Party on Thursday night. But so far at least, there’s been no evidence that the Cameron did anything illegal or improper.

SnyderTalk Comment: Politicians amaze me.

The law applies equally to everyone.  It’s time to enforce it equally.

6: Fox News‘Tell the truth:’ Bill Clinton clashes with Black Lives Matter protesters:

Former President Bill Clinton was involved in a heated exchange with Black Lives Matter protesters Thursday at a Hillary Clinton campaign event in Philadelphia, where he was forced to defend his record as president and his wife’s past statements.

For almost 15 minutes Clinton sparred with protesters who objected to the 1994 criminal justice reform bill he signed into law as president that increased prison sentences for a number of gang-related offenses. Black Lives Matter activists claim the bill disproportionately hurt African-Americans.

A visibly agitated Clinton told the protesters that the bill helped crack down on gangs who were killing African-American children.

“I talked to a lot of African-American groups. They thought black lives mattered. They said take this bill because our kids are being shot in the street by gangs. We had 13-year-old kids planning their own funerals,” Clinton said.
