Jesus is Yahweh

“In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.  He (Jesus) was in the beginning with God.  All things came into being through Him, and apart from Him nothing came into being that has come into being.  In Him was life, and the life was the Light of men.  The Light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not comprehend it.”[i]

So begins the Gospel[ii] of John.  In this beautiful introduction, John declares that the Word of God is God.  We know from the last chapter that the Word of God is Yahweh and that John is talking about Jesus.  Therefore, John is saying that Jesus is Yahweh.

John 1: 3 says that Jesus created everything, and Genesis 1: 1 says that in the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.  Therefore, John is saying that Jesus is the Creator.  By the way, John 1: 3 is the precise definition of the Hebrew word for created (bara) that is used in Genesis 1: 1.[iii]  Bara means to create something out of nothing.

“He (Jesus) was in the world, and the world was made through Him, and the world did not know Him.  He came to His own, and those who were His own did not receive Him.  But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become the children of God, even to those who believe in His Name, who were born, not of blood nor of the will of the flesh nor of the will of man, but of God.  And the Word became flesh, and dwelt among us, and we saw His glory, glory as of the only begotten from the Father, full of grace and truth.[iv]

For the Law was given through Moses; grace and truth were realized through Jesus the Messiah.  No one has seen God at any time; the only begotten God who is in the bosom of the Father, He has explained Him.”[v]

John 1: 12 says that we become the children of God when we “believe in His Name.”  The Name to which this verse refers must be Yahweh.  A study of the Scriptures shows that it cannot be another name.  Then John tells us that the Word of God became flesh and dwelt among us.  Yahweh, the God of all creation, came to earth in the form of Jesus the Messiah to teach us and to fulfill His promise to redeem and save us.  The meaning of the Name He was actually given at birth, Yeshua, is “Yahweh saves” or “Yahweh is salvation.”  Thus, Jesus’ Name tells us who He is and what He came to do.

The Greek word translated as “dwelt” in John’s introduction is “skenoo,” and it means “to tabernacle,” or literally “to pitch your tent.”  In other words, Yahweh, in the form of Jesus, pitched His tent and tabernacled among us the way He did in the wilderness with the Children of Israel.  However, when Jesus came, Yahweh revealed Himself to us completely.  In the wilderness, the Children of Israel could see only His Shekinah, but John and many others saw His bodily form, and before He returned to heaven they saw His glorified form.  Isaiah foretold all of this, and he called Him Immanuel—“God who is with us.”  Jesus is God who is with us.

Blessings in the Book of Revelation is a book that you need to read, especially now.  There are blessings throughout the Scriptures but Revelation is the only book in the Bible actually containing a specific blessing for reading it. It’s repeated twice, once at the beginning and again at the end. This is the reason that I believe Revelation should be the first step toward studying biblical prophecy.
