Isaiah 43: 5-7—“Do not fear, for I am with you; I will bring your offspring from the east, and gather you from the west. I will say to the north, ‘Give them up!’ and to the south, ‘Do not hold them back.’ Bring My sons from afar and My daughters from the ends of the earth, everyone who is called by My name, and whom I have created for My glory, whom I have formed, even whom I have made.”

Shalu shalom Yerushalayim: Pray for the peace of Jerusalem. (Psalm 122: 6)

Scripture of the day:

Isaiah 43: 5-7—“Do not fear, for I am with you; I will bring your offspring from the east, and gather you from the west.  I will say to the north, ‘Give them up!’ and to the south, ‘Do not hold them back.’  Bring My sons from afar and My daughters from the ends of the earth, everyone who is called by My name, and whom I have created for My glory, whom I have formed, even whom I have made.”

“More relevant, the modern market economy is the greatest communal enterprise ever undertaken in the history of humanity. Friedrich Hayekdid the heavy lifting on this point over half a century ago in his essay “The Use of Knowledge in Society.” The efficient pricing of markets allows millions of independent actors to decide for themselves how to allocate resources. According to Hayek, no central planner or bureaucrat could ever have enough knowledge to consistently and successfully guide all of those economic actions in a more efficient manner.”

“In particular, he (Sean Bielat, the man trying to unseat Barney Frank) came to understand that ‘market-based solutions are ultimately more sustainable. It’s just a matter of time.

“According to a wide range of reports, several nuclear bombs were ‘lost’ for 36 hours after taking off August 29/30, 2007 on a ‘cross-country journey’ across the U.S., from U.S.A.F Base Minot in North Dakota to U.S.A.F. Base Barksdale in Louisiana.”

“A suitcase nuke is a tactical nuclear weapon which uses, or is portable enough that it could use, a suitcase as its delivery method. Synonyms include suitcase bomb, backpack nuke, or mini-nuke.”

“I’m saying that more than a hundred weapons out of the supposed number of 250 are not under the control of the armed forces of Russia,” Lebed said in the interview. “I don’t know their location. I don’t know whether they have been destroyed or whether they are stored or whether they’ve been sold or stolen, I don’t know.”

“According to Greenpeace No Nukes there have been more than 120 submarine accidents since 1956. The most recent incident, in August 2000, was the loss of the Russian nuclear submarine Kursk in the Barents Sea. The Kursk is the seventh nuclear submarine lost, five of them Russian, two American. There are 92 known cases of nuclear bombs lost at sea.”

“The term (loose nukes) originally referred to poorly guarded nuclear weapons in the former Soviet Union that might tempt terrorists or criminals. Today, experts use the term to refer to nuclear weapons, materials, or know-how that could fall into the wrong hands.”

“Al-Qaeda is trying to secure material for nuclear weapons and would have ‘no compunction in using them’, President Barack Obama warned, as he welcomed leaders for the largest gathering in the US since the Second World War.”

“A soon-to-be completed U.S. assessment of Iran’s nuclear program is expected to conclude that the government has resumed limited work on a nuclear weapon, according to a U.S. official.”

We Have a Problem!

I’m not trying to alarm you, but you need to know the facts.  Information that is readily available to anyone who’s interested in doing a little digging suggests

  1. that nuclear weapons are not as secure as they should be,
  2. that several, it’s uncertain how many, high yield nuclear weapons are “missing” right now,
  3. that nuclear material and nuclear weapons may have “disappeared” following the collapse of the Soviet Union,
  4. that the world’s nuclear arsenals are under the control of politicians with political agendas,
  5. that nuclear weapons can be transported in containers as small as suitcases,
  6. that rogue states like Iran want nuclear weapons and rogue states like North Korea already have them,
  7. that Pakistan has a nuclear arsenal that is vulnerable to takeover by radical Islamists at any time, and
  8. that terrorist groups like Al Qaeda are trying desperately to obtain nuclear weapons and/or nuclear material.

In the 1990s, I told my strategy students at the University of Virginia that an unknown quantity of former Soviet nuclear weapons and nuclear material was missing.  Their initial reaction was disbelief.  In their minds, that was absolutely impossible since they “knew” nuclear material and nuclear weapons are closely guarded.  Several of my students decided to do a little research on their own to see if I was telling them the truth.  The next time we met, they expressed anxiety because they discovered that in fact nuclear weapons and nuclear material are unaccounted for.  We don’t know what’s on the black-market right now, but how many nuclear weapons and how much nuclear material does it take to do a lot of damage?

I bring this up to make a point.  The world is in a precarious position, and it’s just a matter of time before people who want to destroy us get their hands on nuclear weapons and/or nuclear material.  We can’t afford to be complacent.  We certainly can’t afford to pretend that we don’t have a problem.
