The Blaze— Israel’s Military Intel. Chief Reveals Why Israel Delivers ‘Huge Trucks’ of Goods to Gaza Daily — Even Though Hamas Uses Some to Build Weapons and Tunnels:

According to a report Monday by Israel’s Army Radio, Halevi said during a private meeting with a visiting American Jewish group that Israel delivers on a daily basis hundreds of “huge trucks” filled with items including construction materials — even though Israel is sure that Hamas will use some of those materials to build attack tunnels and rockets.

The thinking apparently is that if Palestinians feel they have nothing to lose, they are more motivated to attack Israel.

“We try to rebuild Gaza, because we understand that they should have something to lose in the future,” Halevi said.

“Every day we bring more than 900 huge trucks into Gaza with materials although we know that some of the cement goes to the tunnels and some of the metal materials goes to rocket production process,” Halevi said, referring to Hamas’ weapons of choice for violent attacks against Israel.

Halevi also revealed that Iran has been offering money to the families of Palestinians who have launched stabbing attacks on Israelis during the wave of nearly daily stabbing, car-ramming and shooting attacks underway since September.

“During the last few months with this situation in Judea and Samaria, we see that Iran is ready to give money for every family of a terrorist who stabbed an Israeli in order to make more and more incidents of stabbing Israelis,” the military intelligence chief said.

SnyderTalk Comment: Israelis are more compassionate toward Palestinians who hate them than Palestinians have any right to expect.  The world doesn’t see it.

Spiritual blindness is the worst kind of blindness.

Don’t discount the importance of Iran’s role in the escalation of violence in Israel.  Thanks to Obama, Iran has a lot of money to spend upsetting the Middle East and the rest of the world.  Next on their agenda, nuclear weapons.

Israel won’t be Iran’s only target.

#####

1: Al-MonitorTurkey threatens fragile Syria peace accord:

Turkish military attacks on US-aligned Syrian Kurdish groups and the possibility of Turkish and Saudi ground troops entering Syria could upend the fragile peace accord worked out by the International Syria Support Group (ISSG) last week. The introduction of Turkish and Saudi ground forces would further risk a major escalation in the war and a whole new round of misery for the Syrian people.

Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu said Feb. 13 that Saudi Arabia was sending fighter jets to Incirlik Air Base and that both countries would consider potential ground operations in Syria. “This is something that could be desired but there is no plan. Saudi Arabia is sending planes and they said, ‘If the necessary time comes for a ground operation, then we could send soldiers,’” Cavusoglu said. Saudi Foreign Minister Adel al-Jubeir, perhaps in response to a US request, clarified Feb. 14, “The kingdom’s readiness to provide special forces to any ground operations in Syria is linked to a decision to have a ground component to this coalition against Daesh [Islamic State] in Syria — this US-led coalition — so the timing is not up to us.”

2: Gordon Sullivan—Time to Hit Pause on the US Army’s Drawdown:

The entire plan was built around the idea of an Iraq and Afghanistan ‘post-war calm’ that never really materialized.

Our Army needs to follow the sage advice of a popular adage: When you find yourself in a deep hole, stop digging.

The deep hole, in this case, is the Army’s continuing reduction in force structure and soldiers. Unless stopped, the Defense Department’s long-range plan will shrink the Army from its 2012 peak of 570,000 active-duty soldiers to 450,000 by 2018. To keep digging without stopping to look around would pose a risk to our nation and its interests, and could endanger our soldiers if they are called on to respond in situations where they lack the numbers, training and resources for the quick and decisive action we expect of our Army.

3: Robert Spencer—Obama proposes budget cuts to anti-terror funds:

Sen. Charles Schumer is slamming a White House proposal that would reduce funding for counterterrorism programs across the country by nearly $300 million.

The New York Democrat is pushing President Barack Obama to reconsider the cuts.

Schumer notes that the cuts to the Urban Area Security Initiative were included in the proposed 2017 budget released last week by the White House. The initiative helps fund programs in cities across the U.S. to prevent extremist attacks, or respond to and recover from them. The proposed budget would cut the funding from $600 million to $330 million.

“These proposed cuts are ill-advised and ill-timed and they must be reversed. End of story,” Schumer said in a statement to The Associated Press. “In light of recent attacks in Paris and San Bernardino, and the vow by our extremist enemies to launch more attacks on our shores, it makes no sense to propose cuts to vital terror-prevention programs like UASI.”

4: ReutersMissiles in Syria kill 50 as schools, hospitals hit; Turkey accuses Russia:

Turkey on Monday accused Russia of an “obvious war crime” after missile attacks in northern Syria killed scores of people, and warned Kurdish militia fighters there they would face the “harshest reaction” if they tried to capture a town near the Turkish border.

An offensive supported by Russian bombing and Iranian-backed Shi’ite militias has brought the Syrian army to within 25 km (15 miles) of Turkey’s frontier. The Kurdish YPG militia – which Turkey regards as a hostile insurgent force – has exploited the situation, seizing ground from Syrian rebels to extend its presence along the border.

Almost 50 civilians were killed when missiles hit at least five medical facilities and two schools in rebel-held areas of Syria on Monday, according to the United Nations, which called the attacks a blatant violation of international law.

5: BloombergPutin’s Syria Peace Gambit Seeks to Cash in Air Campaign Gains:

Vladimir Putin is trying to cash in the gains of the biggest military wager of his career.

Russian airstrikes have helped Putin’s Syrian ally Bashar al-Assad drive back rebel forces after five years of fighting. The momentum clearly established, the Kremlin gave the green light to an agreement with the U.S. and other powers on a partial cease-fire and humanitarian aid shipments due to take effect this week.

For Russia, the deal averts a collapse of the peace talks, which keeps alive a chance to solidify Assad’s position and mitigates the risk of an escalation of the conflict with U.S. allies Saudi Arabia and Turkey. The U.S. wants to step up the fight against Islamic State, while Europe is looking to stem the worst refugee crisis since World War II and alleviate a rising terrorist threat.

Putin’s military gamble in Syria — Russia’s biggest operation outside its borders since the Cold War — has given him the negotiating power he sought, said Ayham Kamel, Middle East and North Africa director at Eurasia Group, a consultancy.

“There’s recognition that the Russians now dominate the agenda in Syria and the Western approach is to yield to Russia,” Kamel said.

6: Chicago TribuneEU’s East wants plan to seal Greek border if Turkey deal fails:

The European Union’s eastern members agreed that should a deal with Turkey to stem the flow of refugees into Europe fail, the bloc should have a “plan B” that would seal Greece’s northern borders.

Leaders of the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Poland and Hungary, meeting in Prague three days before an EU summit, offered troops, police and other aid to Macedonia and Bulgaria, which border Greece, to keep refugees from continuing their journey to the heart of the continent. While leaders stopped short of suggesting an immediate cut-off of Greece from the visa-free Schengen area, they said a plan B should be ready by April.

7: eruonewsViolence escalates in Israel and West Bank:

The Palestinian Health Ministry says at least 25 people were wounded in clashes with Israel Defence Forces at a refugee camp near the West Bank city of Ramallah. The IDF raided the camp to make an arrest.

The ministry claims several Palestinians were hit with live bullets.

Separately, Israeli security forces have arrested the head of the armed Palestinian Tanzim organisation. Jamal Abu Lil is reportedly accused of planning shooting attacks and funding military activity.

Israeli police said a Palestinian woman was shot and wounded by IDF troops in the West Bank city of Hebron on Sunday .. after trying to stab an Israeli soldier.

Dozens of people attended a funeral of two 15-year-old Palestinians who were shot dead by IDF troops in Jenin after throwing rocks at Israeli cars. Israeli police say that one had open fire on soldiers.

8: Chicago TribuneEight years later, Bill Clinton is causing headaches for his wife again:

Halfway through a 40-minute stump speech here, Bill Clinton arrived on the topic of Bernie Sanders’s proposal for single-payer health coverage – and became annoyed.

“Every time we try to have a debate on this, they say: ‘You don’t understand. We’re creating a revolution. You’re getting in the way. You’re part of the establishment,’ “Clinton drawled, with more than a hint of frustration in his voice.  “God forbid we should have an honest discussion on it.”

Then Clinton changed course again.

“That’s not the point I want to make to you,” he said hastily, before refocusing on his principal assignment: delivering a positive message for his wife’s candidacy rather than attacking her opponent.

In his post-White House years, Clinton has become a coveted Democratic surrogate. But when it comes to his wife’s campaigns, something else can happen: He seems to lose it. It was true in this crucial nominating state in 2008, where Hillary Clinton lost badly to Barack Obama. And it’s been true this month, when the former president has reemerged as a potent but unpredictable advocate who sometimes helps his wife’s cause – and sometimes doesn’t.

9: BloombergChina Army Closing Tech Gap With U.S., Pacific Air Chief Says:

China’s military is closing the technology gap with the U.S., though the experience of America’s pilots still gives them an “unbelievably huge” edge, according to the Pacific Air Forces chief.

General Lori Robinson, in Singapore to attend the country’s air show, said she felt assured that Chinese pilots would act professionally in interactions with the U.S., citing a September agreement on rules of behavior. U.S. military pilots flying in the contested South China Sea have been warned over radio — sometimes repeatedly — by Chinese voices telling them to leave, while Japanese planes have been challenged in the neighboring East China Sea.

10: Washington Times: Palestinians admit working with Israel to foil attacks:

It’s a revelation that has sent shock waves throughout the Palestinian enclaves in the West Bank and Gaza Strip: The Palestinian Authority (PA) has acknowledged thwarting dozens of attacks on Israelis planned by local militants.

Last month, Palestinian General Intelligence Service chief Majid Faraj told Defense News that the PA has foiled 200 attacks on Israelis, confiscated weapons and arrested 100 Palestinians since October, when the so-called Third Intifada, an uprising against Israel’s dominance of the Palestinian lands, began.

SnyderTalk Comment: Sometimes the PA works with Israel.  Sometimes they work against Israel. It depends on what the PA wants to accomplish that day.

Unlike Caesar’s wife, the PA is not above reproach. Trusting them is a risky move.

  1. TIMEShimon Peres: ‘Israel Will Be Stronger When She Achieves Peace’:

When the 92-year-old former Israeli President, Prime Minister and Nobel Peace Prize winner Shimon Peres suffered a heart attack on Jan. 14, followed by another rush to the hospital for chest pains a week later, Israel nearly lost one of the most influential leaders in its 67-year history.

Peres’s impact on Israeli politics and society began even before the birth of the state itself. He has been at the forefront of every stage of Israeli history. Of a founding generation of the Jewish State that include his mentor, Israel’s first Prime Minister David Ben-Gurion, and his rival Yitzhak Rabin, only Peres is still alive. Until his retirement in 2014 as Israel’s President, Peres was the world’s oldest head of state, and he remains one of the most beloved and controversial figures in the country today.

SnyderTalk Comment: Peres doesn’t get it, but the people of Israel are beginning to.  More of them each day are waking up to the fact that peace won’t come until the Messiah arrives.  Most of them still don’t realize that they have a role to play in His return:

“Jerusalem, Jerusalem, who kills the prophets and stones those who are sent to her! How often I wanted to gather your children together, the way a hen gathers her chicks under her wings, and you were unwilling. Behold, your house is being left to you desolate! For I say to you, from now on you will not see Me until you say, ‘Blessed is He who comes in the Name of Yahweh!’” (Matthew 23: 37-39)

“The glory which You have given Me I have given to them, that they may be one, just as We are one; I in them and You in Me, that they may be perfected in unity, so that the world may know that You sent Me, and loved them, even as You have loved Me. Father, I desire that they also, whom You have given Me, be with Me where I am, so that they may see My glory which You have given Me, for You loved Me before the foundation of the world.” (John 17: 22-24)
