Trump’s Rhetoric is Dangerous
Donald Trump has made some valuable contributions during the 2016 presidential campaign by raising issues and staking out positions that many others aren’t willing to touch. Some of his ideas make a lot of sense. His latest foray doesn’t.
Trump said that we should ban Muslims from entering the United States. In the aftermath of the San Bernardino attack, that has populist appeal but nothing else.
What if he had said to ban Jews or Christians or any other religious group? Would those who support him now continue to support him?
Trump’s lead in New Hampshire polls has doubled. Obviously, his rhetoric is resonating with many voters, but it has another effect that is dangerous. It is inspiring far right crazies who are as dangerous as Islamists.
When the radical right acts out its anger, Muslims won’t be the only ones at risk. Just like Islamists, they will attack anyone who doesn’t buy everything they say. They will degenerate into an unruly mob and destroy everything in their path, just like Islamists.
Trump’s rhetoric is resonating in Europe. He has money, name recognition, and influence. Europe is a powder keg. Trump’s comments can tip the balance and make things much worse than they are already.
Thanks to Islamist terrorism, the far right in Europe is gaining ground. Marine Le Pen has entered the mainstream in France and neo-Nazis are on the rise in Germany. That’s not good.
The problem we have in the U.S. with the far right is much worse in Europe. They have a long history of horrific violence. The Holocaust is one example. There are many others.
Could it happen again? Under the right conditions, in a heartbeat.
British and French leaders have panned Trump’s proposal. Their countries suffer when far right crazies are energized and mobilized. That’s what Trump’s rhetoric is doing.
Obama’s White House has attacked Trump and said that his comments disqualify him from seeking the presidency. Obama and people working with him and for him have no business criticizing anyone. Their duplicitous actions and selective inaction created the problem.
If Obama had a sense of shame, he would follow the Nixon model and resign in disgrace. That’s not going to happen. Trump isn’t going to drop out of the presidential race, either.
As I said, Trump’s poll numbers are rising. Obama’s poll numbers are falling. The tide is turning.
Obama’s record is reprehensible. Christians are being brutalized by ISIS, but Christian refugees are being denied entrance into the U.S. right now for one reason: it’s because they are Christians. That’s outrageous, but it’s official Obama administration policy.

Meanwhile, Obama wants to import unvetted Muslim “refugees” from Syria even though he knows that ISIS has infiltrated that group. That infuriates rational people AND far right crazies.

I fear that Trump’s rhetoric is spawning big problems that will play out across the globe over many months. Radical right vigilantes just need marching orders from someone they admire. Trump is their man.
Hitler used the same kind of rhetoric. We know how that turned out.
Hitler had some Jewish support in Germany during the early days of his political career. They thought he was spewing anti-Semitic rhetoric just because he wanted to win an election. They were wrong. He meant everything he said and more.
Some have argued that Trump is saying provocative things to capture media attention and that he will gravitate toward a more reasonable position as time passes. That may be true, but conditions are too precarious to play that game.
It’s like screaming “fire” in a crowded theatre or preaching “kill the Jews” during Friday prayers at the mosque. Nothing good comes from it.
We need to properly vet all refugees including Muslim “refugees”, but banning them from entering the U.S. makes no sense.
The U.S. denied admission to German Jews prior to World War II. We should not repeat that mistake.
Unlike Obama and Hillary Clinton, I’m not concerned about Trump’s rhetoric providing Islamist crazies with another recruiting tool. I’m concerned about it unleashing the wrath of far right crazies in the U.S. and Europe.

President Obama’s address to the nation from the Oval Office on Sunday was a “frightening disgrace,” said the head of a major US Jewish group on Monday.
In a harshly worded statement, Morton A. Klein, president of the Zionist Organization of America (ZOA), slammed what he called “Obama’s terrorism speech” and listed what he considered to be the 16 “specific areas of concern” that emerged from it.
“Not only was there no new policy,” Klein’s statement read, “but it was filled with falsehoods about the daily intelligence briefings.”

On May 24, 2014, a man wearing a dark baseball cap and carrying several bags walked into the Jewish Museum of Belgium, in the center of Brussels. It was 10 minutes to four. The man pulled out an AK-47 and started shooting. Ninety seconds later, three museum visitors were dead; a fourth, critically injured in the attack, would later die of his wounds. The shooter managed to escape on foot and was captured six days later, after a nationwide manhunt. He was revealed to be Mehdi Nemmouche, a 29-year-old French national who had traveled to Syria and served as a jailer for the Islamic State. When arrested, he was carrying a bag containing a Kalashnikov, a .38, cameras, a gas mask, and about 330 rounds of ammunition.
Nemmouche, we now know, wasn’t working alone. He was part of a network run by his friend Abdelhamid Abaaoud, a Belgian who had traveled to Syria and became an IS “Emir of War” in the Deir Ezzour province. Like Nemmouche, Abaaoud, too, returned to Europe with the intention of pursuing jihad. His efforts were more successful than his disciple’s, leaving 130 people dead in a series of attacks in Paris on Nov. 13.
Could Abaaoud have been stopped? Would a more aggressive investigation of Nemmouche have led to his operator and saved the lives of all those slain in the 11tharrondisement? It’s hard to tell for certain without access to the investigation’s files, but if you’re pondering the mindset of the Belgian authorities, consider the following statement by the country’s Justice Minister Koen Geens. The Paris attacks, Geens said a few days after the massacre there, proved that terrorists were now after different targets: “It’s no longer synagogues or the Jewish museums,” he said, “it’s mass gatherings and public places.”
RT—Moscow expects ‘unpredictable’ Ankara will avoid further reckless actions:
In the wake of Turkey disturbing deployment of troops in Iraq, Moscow hopes that Ankara will avoid escalating situation in the region with any further reckless actions, including in the territory of Syria, said Russia’s UN envoy following a UN Security Council meeting.
“We hope that this concern that the UN Secretary-General and several members of the Security Council had shown during the meeting we had convened, will cool down the hot heads in Ankara, that they will settle the situation in Iraq in the way that would satisfy the Iraqi government,” Vitaly Churkin said.
Russian diplomat stressed that Moscow hopes Turkey “will not carry out any new reckless moves, including on the Syrian territory.”
Up to 150 Turkish troops equipped with tanks and artillery crossed into Iraq’s northern province, allegedly to train forces battling Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS/ISIL). Turkish troops did not simply cross the Iraqi border into the Nineveh province, but penetrated 100 kilometer into Iraq, reaching the Bashiqa region, about 10 kilometers northeast of Mosul which has been occupied by IS terrorists since mid-2014.
“I have come to the conclusion those actions were unexpected for the US, which is rather strange, which once again proves Turkey is an unpredictable player, which may undertake actions that not only cause protest among the Iraqis, but may even bewilder the US,” Churkin added.

The downing of a Russian Sukhoi bomber by the Turkish Air Force was sufficient reason to start a war, but Moscow chose not to respond symmetrically, says Russia’s Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev.
“What did 20th-century countries used to do in a similar situation? A war began,” Medvedev said on the ‘Talk to the Prime Minister’ TV program.
Medvedev said Ankara had “violated the norms of the international law,” giving Russia what’s called in international judicial language ‘a casus belli’, or a reason to start a war.

TIME—Why The Push for a More Ambitious Paris Agreement Is Gaining Traction:
Scientists have long-held that global temperature rise needs to be kept to 2°C (3.6°F) by 2100 to avoid some of the most catastrophic effects of climate change. Preventing temperatures from crossing that threshold, along with halting the drought, extreme storms and food shortages that would come with crossing, had been the mission of negotiators gathered in Paris this month for a conference on climate change.
But in recent days a new push from countries vulnerable to climate change has revived a more aggressive goal: holding temperature rise to 1.5°C (2.7°F). The effort is gaining traction, to the surprise, and delight, of many observers gathered here even as they realize that the chances of actually meeting that target are slim under current estimates.
“You don’t get action without strong goals,” says Heather Coleman, climate change policy manager at Oxfam International. “That’s why so many organizations are pushing here for a long-term [1.5°C] goal.”

Jerusalem Post—A far-right, pro-Israel France? Expert says this is where all of Europe is heading:
France went to the polls on Sunday in regional elections and the far-right National Front party, formerly known for its anti-Semitic and anti-immigrant stances but now known for its support of Israel and opposition to radical Islam, came out as a winner across the country.
The regional election outcomes are taken seriously since they are thought to be a bellweather for what will come when France votes in the 2017 national elections.
Though some have pinned the party’s success on its occurrence so soon after the November 13 terror attacks in Paris, one Israeli expert told The Jerusalem Post on Monday that France has been moving to the right for years and is part of an overall trend in Europe of far-right parties becoming the mainstream.
Dr. Esther Lopatin, director of the European Studies program at the Interdisciplinary Center Herzliya, said that Europeans are frustrated by leaders who have ignored their concerns about rapid immigration and radical Islam on the continent.
So while National Front leader Marine Le Pen has gone to great lengths to show that her party is no longer anti-Semitic (even to the point of saying she is a Zionist and kicking out the party’s founder, her own father, Jean-Marie Le Pen), Lopatin was careful to note that the party’s fairly-recent rejection of anti-Semitism has not come from a sudden love of Jews, but rather from a realization that they share with the Jewish community a common enemy in radical Islam.

The extreme carnage that we are witnessing in the junk bond market right now is one of the clearest signals yet that a major U.S. stock market crash is imminent. For those that are not familiar with “junk bonds,” please don’t get put off by the name. They aren’t really “junk.” They simply have a higher risk and thus a higher return than other bonds of the same type. And yesterday, I explained why I watch them so closely. If stocks are going to crash, you would expect to see a junk bond crash first. This happened in 2008, and it is happening again right now. On Monday, a high yield bond ETF known as JNK crashed through the psychologically important 35.00 barrier for the very first time since the last financial crisis. On Tuesday, high yield bonds had their worst day in three months, and JNK plummeted all the way down to 34.44. When I saw this, I was absolutely stunned. This is precisely the kind of junk bond crash that I have been anticipating that we would soon witness.
Normally, stocks and junk bonds track one another very closely, but just like before the 2008 crash, they have become decoupled in recent months. Anyone that even has an elementary understanding of the financial world knows that this cannot continue indefinitely. And when they start converging once again, the movement could be quite violent.
When I chose to use the word “carnage” to open this article, I was not exaggerating what is going on in the junk bond market one bit. On Tuesday evening, Jeffrey Gundlach used the exact same word to describe what is happening…
“Jeffrey Gundlach, the widely followed investor who runs DoubleLine Capital, said on a webcast on Tuesday that the junk bond market has come under severe selling pressure ahead of the Federal Reserve’s policy meeting next week.
We are looking at real carnage in the junk bond market,” Gundlach said. Gundlach also said it was too early to buy high-yield junk bonds and energy debt securities. “I don’t like things when they go down every single day.”

For four years, Ilana Lerner Kalmanovich rode a hot and crowded bus three hours each day to reach the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro, where she was pursuing degrees in physical education and nutrition.
Police raids into nearby slums, or favelas, often blocked the freeway, and stray bullets from gun battles with criminals were a constant threat. Even on the Federal University campus, the oldest and among the most prestigious in Brazil, Kalmanovich felt unsafe. Robberies were commonplace and, every now then, corpses were found in the nearby woods.
So in 2007, Kalmanovich moved to Israel. She had spent a whole year there a decade earlier on a youth movement program and fallen in love with the country. And though she holds German citizenship and could have built a new life for herself in Europe, there was never any doubt she would make her home in the Jewish state.
“Israel is the place where I feel at home, happy, among my people,” Kalmanovich told JTA. “We say ‘Shabbat shalom’ to the bus driver, to the garbage man, to the sales clerk. Everyone shares mostly the same social and economic level. We all celebrate the same national holidays. It’s like living in a huge kibbutz of 8 million people. Here I am the rule, not the exception.”

- For decades, it was impossible to bring Turkish military personnel or other state authorities to Turkish courts. Before the negotiation process between the Turkish state and the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) began around 2009, Turkish military personnel had full immunity for the crimes they committed against the Kurds. No one could bring them to account. Those who even sought help from the police or gendarmerie could also be exposed to torture, rape or even murder.
- It was for that reason so many violations of human rights in Kurdistan could be brought to court only decades after they were committed. To this day, no one has ever been punished. The immunity of state authorities, including “security” officials in Turkey, continues. Human rights cases are dismissed by the courts, one by one.
- “We told the court that they did not have the intention of restoring justice, that we had lost our trust in them, and that they were not impartial. And we demanded they change the judge.” — Human rights lawyer Tahir Elci, who was killed by police.
- At the funeral of Kurdish lawyer and politician Vedat Aydin, state “security” forces opened fire directly into the funeral cortege and killed 14 people. No one has been charged with slaying Aydin or those who attended the funeral.
