Why Rabbi Akiva is Not My Hero

In an article titled “Why Rabbi Akiva is My Hero”, Rabbi Dovid Rosenfeld makes the case that Rabbi Akiva is to be admired.  I have another perspective.

Two people in the history of the world stand out for having divided Jews and Christians.  In order of occurrence, they are Rabbi Akiva and Roman Emperor Constantine.

I’ll ignore Constantine for now and say a few words about Akiva.  He died more than 100 years before Constantine was born.

During the Bar Kochba Rebellion in about 135 A.D., Jewish Christians who were called Nazarenes at the time fought alongside Bar Kochba to drive the Romans out of Israel.  When it looked as though the Jews would win, Akiva declared that Bar Kochba was the messiah.

Jewish believers couldn’t accept that.  Back then, it was common knowledge among believers that the Messiah is Yahweh.  Declaring that Bar Kochba was the messiah was tantamount to idol worship.  That’s forbidden.

Nazarenes withdrew their support, and Bar Kochba was defeated.

Akiva blamed the Nazarenes for the defeat, and he declared that they weren’t Jewish.  But he didn’t stop there.  He went on to forbid any contact between Jews and Nazarenes.  That became a central part of Jewish tradition, and it is still in effect to this day.

Although I can’t prove it, I have a hunch that Akiva harbored residual resentment toward the Messiah a hundred years after His crucifixion and resurrection.  He saw an opportunity to inflict what he thought would be a mortal wound to the growing Nazarene community and he took it.

Even now, many Jewish families will disown their relatives including their own children if they become believers.

In Akiva’s day, virtually every Christian was a Jew.  Very few Gentile believers existed.

The Nazarenes were a sect of Judaism.  They were just like Reform Jews, ultra-Orthodox Jews, and Orthodox Jews today, for example.  They were one of many sects.  They were Jewish by birth and believers by the grace of Yahweh.

Akiva had no legal or moral justification or authority to challenge the ancestry of his fellow Jews, but he did and people let him get away with it.  It made absolutely no sense.

Akiva’s ruling ranks up there with the most horrendous rabbinic pronouncements every uttered.  Problems associated with it reverberate to this day.

The only rabbinic ruling that makes less sense than Akiva’s is one prohibiting pronouncing the Name “Yahweh”.  That one defies logic and the Torah since Yahweh commanded us to declare His Name to the world.  That prohibition was instituted in the mid-second century B.C., and we know where it has led us.

Today, most Jewish people don’t know Yahweh’s Name.  They think His Name is Hashem or Adonai.  Most Jewish people who do know Yahweh’s Name refuse to say it or declare it.  It’s part of their tradition.

The problem is even worse in the Christian community.  Christians think that Yahweh’s Name is GOD or LORD.  Both of those titles are problematic for more than one reason, but I won’t get into that in this editorial.  The point is that ridiculous rabbinic rulings have had dreadful consequences.

In the Mea Shearim neighborhood of Jerusalem, you would probably be stoned for saying “Yahweh”.  If you think I’m exaggerating, try it.  If you decide to give it a try, be prepared to run as fast as you can.

These are irrefutable facts: Judaism has always had sects, and in the history of Judaism, no sect has ever been singled out for abuse the way Nazarenes were and Christian Jews, Messianic Jews, are.

There is a reason for this.  Satan is behind it, and he has influenced people like Akiva to do his bidding.

I’m not guessing.  It happened before Akiva, too.

Minute details about the Messiah’s life (His birth, death, resurrection, and return) were foretold in the Torah, the Prophets, and the Writings—the Tanach.  His emergence on the scene was excitedly anticipated by religious Jews for years before He was born.  After His birth, ordinary Jewish people flocked to Him in large numbers, but the Jewish religious elite rejected Him because He threatened their social, political, and economic standing.

If that’s not the work of Satan, I don’t know what is.

Akiva may have done many good things during his life, but the thing for which he will be remembered most is so horrible that it defies description.  Nothing good he did can undo or make up for the evil he did.

Read His Name is Yahweh.

Earl Cox: Will Mr. Obama’s fifty billion dollar ‘bribe’ seal a deal with Iran?— News about Mr. Obama’s $50 billion bonus to Iran recently hit the wires.  It could be said that the message sent by President Obama’s offer of a bonus was that he and his partner in Middle East mischief, John Kerry, are so desperate for a deal that they are willing to award the mad mullahs of Iran a $50 billion dollar “bribe” to seal a nuclear deal.  Mr. Obama is one up on Neville Chamberlain who agreed with Hitler–without a bonus!   What could go dangerously wrong when Iran, a country that chants “Death to America,” receives between $30 billion and $50 billion from the very country they want to destroy?  What could go wrong when that cash infusion provides the means and the ammunition to fund Iran’s Middle East partners-in-terror across the region?  What could go wrong when Hamas in Gaza and Hezbollah in Lebanon are the beneficiaries of Iran’s windfall?

SnyderTalk Comment: See “Iran’s Khamenei rejects nuclear talks under threat: state TV”.  That boy needs an attitude adjustment, and his friend in the White House needs the boot.

Oops.  It’s too late for that.  Obama needs a Congress that has a backbone and a populace that isn’t soul sick.

Watch “Obama is going to let Iran get nukes”.

Wake up America.

Abraham Rabinovich: Nasrallah: Iran Will Decide When to Go to War with Israel—According to a report Tuesday in the Hizbullah-affiliated Lebanese newspaper Al-Akhbar, Hizbullah leader Hassan Nasrallah said the Syrian regime would be unable to take back all the territory rebel groups have seized. The normally aggressive Nasrallah, whose frequent tirades against Israel are often accompanied by predictions of its near-term demise, adopted a new tone last month when he said Hizbullah alone was incapable of bringing down the Jewish state. “Are we supposed to lie to our people and ourselves, saying that we are capable of launching a war against Israel, wiping it off the map, and liberating Palestine?” he told Syrian state television. “We are realistic. We are facing a real force.” The assessment reflects a sharp change in attitude from his famous remark a decade ago that Israel was “weaker than a spiderweb” and would be swept away easily when the time comes. “No resistance faction can be responsible for a war of such magnitude by itself,” he said. “A decision like this should be taken by partners who are capable of accomplishing the goal,” he said, referring to Iran.  Also see “Nasrallah: Fall of Assad Would Mean the Fall of Hizbullah”.

Hurriyet Daily News: Turkish FM says Erdoğan, Obama to open mosque in US—After Turkish Foreign Minister announced that President Barack Obama “accepted in principle” to join President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan in a trip to Maryland to open a mosque, a White House spokesperson has said there were “no presidential visits or travel to announce” at the moment. On April 19, Foreign Minister Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu, who was on a three-day visit to Washington, visited the Turkish-American Culture and Civilization Center in Maryland that also has a medium-sized mosque, and lunched with representatives from the American Muslim community. “During a phone call, President [Recep Tayyip] Erdoğan asked President [Barack] Obama to accompany him in opening the center together and President Obama accepted his offer in principle,’” Çavuşoğlu told the representatives, according to Turkey’s state-run Anadolu Agency. If Obama’s schedule allows at the time of the opening, he will accompany Erdoğan, he added. “We don’t have any conversations to read out for you. And no travel or Presidential engagements to announce,” Mark Stroh, a White House National Security Council spokesman, told daily Hürriyet on April 20.

SnyderTalk Comment: Obama is playing a game that most people seem not to understand, and he’s doing it with the enthusiastic support of the Democrat Party.

That’s not a partisan political statement.  It’s a fact.

The Obama administration denies the statement coming out of Turkey, but we’ve learned something about Obama that we should never forget.  He’s a liar.

That said, Obama will turn on a dime if he encounters political heat.

Remember what Obama told Dmitri Medvedev before the 2012 presidential election: “I’ll have more flexibility after the election.”

What did he mean?

He meant that he would do things if he was reelected that he wouldn’t even discuss publicly before the election.  We reelected him.  We have only ourselves to blame.

Shoshana Bryen: When the Government Kills— If the U.S. was wrong about what Israel was doing, what about what the U.S. was doing? An American air strike over Syria is said to have killed nearly 60 Syrian civilians, including 13 children; 118 Iraqi civilians have been killed by coalition airstrikes as of January 2015. “It is a cruel and bitter truth that in the fog of war generally, and in our fight against terrorists specifically, mistakes, sometimes deadly mistakes, happen.” — U.S. President Barack Obama. Will Obama offer the same understanding to the army of a democratic ally, Israel?

Yonah Jeremy Bob: Defense Minister Ya’alon: In Gaza War, IDF Did What It Had to Do to Protect Israeli Civilians—After war crimes allegations following last summer’s Gaza war, Israeli Defense Minister Moshe Ya’alon said Tuesday, “I can still look at myself in the mirror.” Ya’alon recounted targeting decisions in which he was involved when Hizbullah was purposely placing weapons in civilian homes in Lebanon. “If we don’t intercept the rocket-launchers in advance, [Israeli] civilians will be hurt, if not killed. If we hit the launchers, it will hurt or kill Lebanese civilians.” He said a “long, deep discussion” regarding the “moral and legal considerations” took place before the final decision to strike the rocket launchers. “Later we were blamed for collateral damage and killing civilians,” but maintained that the IDF had done what it had to do then, “did it again in Gaza, [and] will do it in any round of hostilities in the future.” At the same time, he said that sometimes the IDF worked so hard to avoid civilian casualties that it gave extensive warnings to people to leave an area, and thereby “loses tactical surprise – but we still do it.”

Ron Ben-Yishai: Defending Israel’s Border with Syria—A UN bomb disposal team guided a sapper in a heavy protective suit toward four bodies lying at the foot of Mount Hermon last Tuesday. The bundle of explosives carried by one of the terrorists was clearly visible. The four had attempted to lay explosives intended for IDF soldiers, but Israeli troops saw them cross the cease-fire line and begin laying charges in an area that is undisputedly Israeli. Israel Air Force jets fired several precision missiles that thwarted the attack and took out the perpetrators. UN Disengagement Observer Force personnel were invited to document the bodies and see their explosives up close, to see that this was a foiled attempt to attack Israeli territory. Moreover, the attempted attack was carried out just 350 meters from a UNDOF post, right under the noses of the Irish battalion stationed there. Had the UN officers picked up their binoculars, they would have seen the four heading for their destination. For defense of the Golan Heights, the IDF has prepared a well-defended border with a new fence at its center, tied to a system of alerts as well as broad technological and human intelligence-gathering. An IDF mobile unit operates in the area round the clock, backed by an array of sensors, radars and cameras, operated both day and night by soldiers deep in Israeli territory, together with unmanned aircraft that enable Israel to see everything that moves on the ground.

Matti Friedman: Paid by Foreigners to Say Things about Israel that Foreigners Want to Hear— I’ve been asked a few times about the “Breaking the Silence” report that is currently being played up by the international press, as is any report that fits the narrative of Israelis as war criminals. (Contradictory reports, like the recent one I posted here from two US military experts, are not considered news.) I hope that most intelligent people have stopped taking international press coverage of Israel too seriously. But there are a few things that are important to understand. 1. War is awful and people come back feeling upset about things they’ve seen and done. Some observers are reliable, and others aren’t. Some of the things described in the report no doubt happened as they were described. Others didn’t. Infantrymen at the bottom of the hierarchy often don’t understand what they’re seeing, or the reasons for what they’re doing, and I’m speaking from experience. Things that make no sense to a private, sergeant, or lieutenant sometimes (but by no means always) make more sense if you go a few notches up the command chain. Young soldiers tend not to understand this, certainly not at the time and not immediately afterward. For example, open-fire regulations at a particular time could seem too aggressive given your limited understanding of where you are. If you have all of the information at your disposal – and no soldier does – you might understand why. A target shelled for reasons unknown to you might have been shelled for good reason after all. Or not. You don’t know, and in many cases (but not all) it’s a mistake to think you do. Drawing broad conclusions about Israeli military practice from “testimonies” of this kind is irresponsible.

Dore Gold: New “Breaking the Silence” Report Maliciously Defames Israel— The Jerusalem Center recently published an extensive study of Operation Protective Edge entitled The Gaza War 2014: The War Israel Did Not Want and the Disaster It Averted. The book includes a chapter by Lt. Col. (res.) David Benjamin, who served in the IDF Military Advocate General’s Corps (MAG) as Chief Legal Advisor for the Gaza Strip. That chapter, along with other research in the book, shows how the IDF goes to great lengths to avoid civilian casualties and to comply with international law. The IDF investigates any incident that may involve violation of those rules. An IDF Fact Finding Assessment Mechanism (FFAM) was set up and activated during Operation Protective Edge. The FFAM, headed by a major-general and composed of operational and legal experts, mostly reservists, began its work about two weeks into the operation. To date, around 100 incidents have been referred by the MAG for examination by the FFAM. The organization Breaking the Silence recently alleged that testimonies it collected from anonymous Israeli soldiers showed that the IDF employed indiscriminate fire in Gaza that resulted in many Palestinian civilian casualties and widespread destruction.

Lenny Ben-David: Gazan Casualties: How Many and Who They Were— The 50-day Hamas war against Israel left 66 Israeli soldiers and six civilians dead; there were a total of 842 Israeli casualties during the conflict. On the other side, UN and Palestinian sources claimed that some 2,100 Palestinians in Gaza were killed, of whom 72 to 84 percent were civilians. There are strong reasons to contest these Palestinian figures and argue that the percentage of Gazan civilian casualties was fewer than 50 percent. On December 1, 2014, the Meir Amit Intelligence and Terrorism Information Center reported on its detailed, name-by-name analysis of 1,598 Palestinian fatalities in Operation Protective Edge that amounted to 75 percent of those who were killed. Of the fatalities who could be identified, about 45 percent were non-combatants, while 55 percent were combatants – nowhere near the levels of civilian losses that were discussed in the media.

Steven A. Cook: Why Is Israel Criticized for Helping Nepal Earthquake Victims?—The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) sent 260 doctors, nurses and personnel trained in finding disaster victims to Kathmandu after the major quake. Criticism of the IDF’s Nepal mission from some well-known anti-Israel activists is to be expected, even if it is bizarre. But for those genuinely interested in human rights it seemed rather odd to call out the Israelis for sending relief. Human Rights Watch’s Ken Roth tweeted: “Easier to address a far-away humanitarian disaster than the nearby one of Israel’s making in Gaza.” Let’s review why it is easier for the Israelis to provide relief in Nepal than in Gaza: 1) Since 2005, about 15,000 rockets have been fired at Israel from Gaza. 2) The Nepalese have not fired a single rocket at Israel. The way Israelis see it, Gaza is rockets and tunnels and terrorists, whereas Nepal is temples, mountains and nice people. Roth does a disservice to both himself and his organization with his ill-considered tweet. When the executive director of Human Rights Watch criticizes the Israelis for providing humanitarian relief, it actually makes it easier to dismiss his criticism of Israel’s human rights record.

Arif Tekdal: Israeli Professor: Turkish-Israeli Relations Hurt by Erdogan’s Hate Speech, Not Mavi Marmara—When Turkish President Erdogan was the head of the youth commission of the Beyoglu branch of the National Salvation Party (MSP) in the 1970s, he wrote a play titled “Maskoya,” an acronym of “Mason” (Freemason), “Komunist”  (Communist) and “Yahudi” (Jew), Israeli Professor Raphael Israeli of Hebrew University reminded a conference in Ankara on Monday. Israeli said that Erdogan wanted to show, “as Hitler did in Mein Kampf, that communists and Jews were the two great evils in the world.” “That play was shown to the public and Erdogan participated in it. I cannot believe someone who writes something…so horrible about Jews can suddenly, after he becomes prime minister and then president, forget all that and decide that his policy [regarding Israel] takes into consideration strategic or logical reasoning.” “Hatred by necessity creates lies, because when you have hatred you have to justify it; to yourself, to your people and to the world. Why do you hate so deeply? And when you don’t have facts to sustain your stories, then you create them and those are the lies I am talking about.”

i24 News: French Judges Conclude Inquiry into Death of Yasser Arafat—Judges in France have concluded their investigation into the 2004 death of Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat, it was reported on Tuesday. French experts reexamining evidence had in March confirmed that Arafat’s death was not the result of poisoning. The prosecutor for the Paris suburb of Nanterre said the experts found there was no foul play in Arafat’s death. The French findings matched those of a Russian team. Arafat died at age 75 at the Percy de Clamart Hospital near Paris. His widow Suha lodged a complaint in Nanterre in 2012, claiming that her husband was assassinated, sparking an inquiry.

Farthest galaxy found, over 13 billion light years away

SnyderTalk Comment: “Farthest” is a terribly inaccurate word in this instance.

Based on the latest technology available to us, it’s the farthest galaxy that we can see.  Thinking that it’s actually the farthest galaxy is preposterous.

We can’t fathom the universe; multiverses are fantasy to many; black holes were fiction until a few years ago; and Yahweh created everything.  Understanding Him is impossible unless we have a personal relationship with Him.

Thankfully, Yahweh told us what we need to do.  It’s so simple that a child can do it.  I know because it happened to me as a child.

Seek Him, and you will find Him.  It’s as simple as that.

Some people say that it can’t be that simple, so they don’t seek Him.  It’s their choice and their loss.

4--Scripture of the Day Yahweh

Exodus 9

13 Then Yahweh said to Moses, “Rise up early in the morning and stand before Pharaoh and say to him, ‘Thus says Yahweh, the God of the Hebrews, “Let My people go, that they may serve Me. 14 For this time I will send all My plagues on you and your servants and your people, so that you may know that there is no one like Me in all the earth. 15 For if by now I had put forth My hand and struck you and your people with pestilence, you would then have been cut off from the earth. 16 But, indeed, for this reason I have allowed you to remain, in order to show you My power and in order to proclaim My name through all the earth. 17 Still you exalt yourself against My people by not letting them go.”’”

SnyderTalk Comment: Read His Name is Yahweh.

Blessings in the Book of Revelation is a book that you need to read, especially now.  There are blessings throughout the Scriptures but Revelation is the only book in the Bible actually containing a specific blessing for reading it. It’s repeated twice, once at the beginning and again at the end. This is the reason that I believe Revelation should be the first step toward studying biblical prophecy. Though not easy to do, Revelation can be broken down and understood by anyone, not just the academic elite.
