Michael McAuliff—Senators Reach Deal On Massive Free Trade Bill No One Has Seen:
Congress’ tax committees announced an agreement Thursday to speed through a bill to give President Barack Obama the fast-track authority that he will need to push mammoth new trade deals through Congress.
While a deal had been believed to be in the works, news that it was actually done came as a surprise to even members of the House Ways and Means Committee and the Senate Finance Committee, which called a hearing on the pact with less than 12 hours’ notice.
“We’ve had a very positive set of discussions, and we are in my opinion close to reaching an agreement on Trade Promotion Authority,” Finance Committee Chairman Sen. Orrin Hatch (R-Utah) said Thursday, before the details were released both to his committee members and the public.
TPA refers to the fast-track trading authority that would allow the White House to cut new trade deals with Asian and European nations and pass them through Congress with expedited procedures. Under these rules, the deals cannot be amended or obstructed by procedures, and they get a simple up-or-down vote.
The fast track authority will likely pave the way for both the controversial Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership agreement with the European Union and the Trans-Pacific Partnership with a dozen Asian nations. Both deals are vastly larger than NAFTA, and would involve about two-thirds of the entire world’s economy. Currently, the United States has trade agreements covering just 10 percent of world trade.

SnyderTalk Comment: The House and Senate reached an agreement with the president on a trade bill that no-one had read and few if any had seen. Members of Congress were given 12 hours’ notice by the White House before the agreement was reached.
This is evidence of a very serious problem. I’m not saying that I have a problem with the bill. My only point is that members of Congress aren’t doing their job.
This is one example. Obamacare is another. There are many more.
What we have right now is very close to the textbook definition of a dictatorship. The president decides and Congress rubberstamps his decisions. The problem is obvious.
Why was Obama taken aback when Senators demanded to see and approve the nuclear deal that he negotiated with Iran? He resisted until he had no alternative except to submit to the Constitution and to the Senate.
Obama was surprised because he’s had his way with no congressional pushback so many times before.
In SnyderTalk, I’ve said lots of negative things about Democrats, but I am not a Republican. I have problems with both political parties. Many of our legislators, Republicans and Democrats, should not be in government.
Tweaking an idea from William F. Buckley, Jr., we might be better off if we were governed by people whose names were selected randomly from the phone book. That would solve the campaign financing problem and the term limits problem.
This is the pertinent question: would we be worse off? I doubt it.
I’m exaggerating for effect, but this is my point: it’s time for us to do more than just talk about how appalling Congress is. It’s time for us to do something about it.
How can Congress be so bad while members of the House and Senate keep getting reelected time after time?
The answer is simple. Voters are not doing their job.

Lee Smith: Inside Obama’s Meeting With Jewish Leaders— Imagine if at the height of Apartheid madness in South Africa, the president of the United States had decided to partner with the racist white regime in Pretoria, lift sanctions, and put that country’s illegal nuclear program on a glide path toward obtaining a nuclear bomb. As Basij commander Mohammad Reza Naqdi said recently, “Destroying Israel is non-negotiable.” There may be different centers of power throughout the regime, as Iran experts posit, but everyone agrees with the Supreme Leader that Israel—the “Zionist cancer”—has got to go. Middle East experts and experienced Iran watchers in the West typically dismiss such threats as instrumental rhetoric intended to thrill local bigots and separate the Arab and Persian masses from their rulers. So why take such rhetoric seriously? The Iranians wouldn’t ever really use the bomb. In fact, they’re very clever, rational people.
SnyderTalk Comment: I’ll be thrilled when Jewish leaders finally realize that the Democratic Party is not working for them, and it’s not working for Israel, either. Booing Yahweh should have sealed the party’s fate in Jewish eyes, but it didn’t.

Leonid Bershidsky: Putin has far better hand than Obama in Iran—It is much easier to explain why Russian President Vladimir Putin wants a multilateral deal with Iran than US President Barack Obama. The political and economic gains from the removal of United Nations-imposed sanctions are palpable for Russia, while iffy at best for the US. Putin’s moves, since a framework deal on Iran’s nuclear programme was agreed upon on April 2, clearly indicate how he plans to develop Russia’s partnership with Iran. One is arms sales, as indicated by the recent decision to permit the stalled shipment of S-300 anti-aircraft missiles, and the other is oil deals, as exemplified by a purported oil-for-goods swap. Neither decision required the lifting of international sanctions against Iran — these were voluntary restrictions Putin could have ended even without the prospect of a multilateral deal. What he is trying to do is to get a foot in the door first, before his western adversaries start making inroads into the Iranian market and focusing on areas where Russia is competitive. The potential gains are significant.
Eric Bradner, Ted Barrett and Deirdre Walsh: Why Obama flipped on Iran bill—Over the past two weeks, President Barack Obama made a full-court press to persuade lawmakers to back his Iran diplomacy and abandon a bill giving Congress a say in any final deal. Ultimately, though, the White House was forced to bow to the reality: Enough Democrats supported the principle of allowing Congress to weigh in on the nuclear deal that even a veto threat couldn’t stop it. Shortly before the Senate Foreign Relations Committee unanimously voted Tuesday to send the bill to the Senate floor, the White House indicated that the veto threat had been withdrawn. Republicans and some Democrats chalked up the about-face to a calculation by the administration that the numbers simply weren’t on its side. “I don’t think they had a choice. The votes were there,” said Arizona Republican Sen. Jeff Flake, a committee member. “I think they certainly didn’t want to flirt with the situation where there would be enough votes to override a veto. That’s where we were headed.”
SnyderTalk Comment: The reason Obama flipped on the Iran deal is so simple that it’s almost embarrassing to have to write about it.
The Senate finally did its job. Senators could have acted responsibly a long time ago, but Democrats controlled the upper chamber until 2014.
Democrat Senators were and are in Obama’s pocket. However, now they are in the minority in the Senate and are facing the possibility of a smaller Democrat contingent after the 2016 election. Thus, they are pretending to care about the Constitution, the people of this country, and our allies.
The operative word is “pretending”. Democrats will be in a holding pattern until they think they have the upper hand. As quickly as they have the opportunity, they will revert to their former ways.
Bottom line: don’t trust Democrats. They are still the anti-Yahweh party and the party that stands for immorality and perversion.
That’s not a partisan political statement. It’s a factual statement.

Guy Millière: Iran “Deal”: West’s Surrender Triggering War— No agreement was signed between Iran and the P5+1 group on April 2; no agreement will be signed on June 30. The text defining the “framework” of some agreement to be signed in June was immediately challenged by Iran. Western leaders speak and act as if they have no idea what Iran is saying or doing. Western leaders wanted something akin to an agreement. They got something akin to an agreement. Iran’s leaders seem to have spotted pretty soon that Western leaders would willingly concede everything — and possibly more — to get any “agreement”; so that is what Western leaders got. Western leaders not only failed to reach an agreement; they capitulated. The reason for the talks was to stop Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons. When, according to Western reports, they saw that Iran would not agree to stop, they “flipped” and instead became complicit.

Yonah Jeremy Bob: How will the latest anti-boycott law ruling affect BDS?—Five fingers. With a simple wave of a hand, the High Court of Justice on Wednesday propped up a law with one of the most powerful weapons yet produced to fight boycotts against Israel (at least from within the country) while also narrowly rejecting exempting boycotters who target only the West Bank or “post-1967 Israel” from the law. The implications of the ruling for the Boycott Divestment and Sanctions campaign and counter-campaign globally could be massive. What’s it all about? The law at stake empowered the finance minister to fine or remove tax breaks from Israeli NGOs that called for boycotts of parts of Israel, as well as empowering individuals to sue those NGOs for civil damages they claimed were caused by such boycotts. The court did strike a provision that would have allowed punitive damages against those NGOs, somewhat reducing the biggest threat they faced for calling for boycotts, but leaving the overall threat in place.
David Ignatius: The Middle East’s sick state—Will the Middle East be as unstable 10 years from now as it is today? I posed that question this week to a class of students at Harvard University’s Kennedy School of Government. About half answered yes — that things will be as bad or worse, no matter what the United States does. These graduate students sense what many Middle East experts are beginning to vocalize: The region is caught in a turbulent vortex of change that’s likely to continue for many years, perhaps decades. The drivers are political, social, economic and demographic forces over which the United States and other outside powers have little control. For the next generation, instability may be the rule in the Middle East, rather than the exception. Predictions about the future based on current trends are always risky because analysts can’t foresee the unexpected “black swan” events that produce radical change. Nobody could have anticipated that a Tunisian fruit vendor’s self-immolation in 2010 would begin a cascade of revolution and civil war in the Middle East. Similarly, we can’t forecast the process that may eventually restore balance.

Khamenei Wants to Destroy Us—Our basic error is that we think our offer of a strategic alliance – President Obama’s “outstretched hand” – is attractive to Iran. It isn’t. Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei doesn’t want a deal with us; he wants to destroy us. When he calls us the “Great Satan” or when he leads chants of “Death to America!,” he means it. Think of the negotiations as a component in the Iranian war against us, not as a step on the path to detente. We have real enemies who don’t want to seize our outstretched hand. They want to chop it off.
Keren Aviram and Yoram Schweitzer: Legal Rules and Anti-Terrorism Warfare: The Case of Mustafa Dirani, Revisited— On January 15, 2015, an expanded panel of judges of the Israeli Supreme Court, in a re-hearing (CFH 5698/11), ordered the dismissal of Mustafa Dirani’s petition against the State of Israel for damages regarding his claims of being tortured by his interrogators while in custody in Israel. In this ruling, the Supreme Court expanded the customary common law rule precluding the examination of an enemy’s claim during wartime and applied it to members of terrorist organizations operating out of foreign countries, even if not in a formal state of war with Israel. The expansion of this legal rule and its adaption to the context of modern anti-terrorism warfare constitutes an appropriate model that may be adopted by other countries fighting terrorism, and highlights the interface between judicial rulings in the national arena and international law.
Col. (ret.) Richard Kemp and Maj. (ret.) Chris Driver-Williams: Killing Americans and their Allies: Iran’s Continuing War against the U.S. and the West—Iranian military action, often working through proxies using terrorist tactics, has led to the deaths of well over a thousand American soldiers in Iraq and Afghanistan over the last decade and a half. Throughout the course of the Iraq campaign, a variety of weapons flowed into the country through direct purchases by the government of Iran. These included Explosively Formed Penetrators (EFPs), a shaped charge designed to penetrate armor. These weapons – often camouflaged as rocks – were identical to those employed by Hizbullah against Israeli forces. In 2006, the British Telegraph revealed that three Iranian factories were “mass producing” the roadside EFP bombs used to kill soldiers in Iraq. In 2007, American troops discovered over 100 Austrian-made Steyr HS50 .50 caliber sniper rifles in Iraq. These high-powered rifles, which fire Iranian bullets, can pierce all in-service body armor from up to a mile and penetrate U.S. armored Humvee troop carriers. The rifles were part of a larger shipment legally purchased from the Austrian manufacturer under the justification that they would be used by Iranian police to combat drug smugglers. Iran paid Taliban fighters $1,000 for each U.S. soldier they killed in Afghanistan. The Sunday Times reported that a Taliban operative received $18,000 from an Iranian firm in Kabul as reward for an attack in 2010 that killed several Afghan government troops and destroyed an American armored vehicle.
Michael Gerson: Is Any Deal Better than No Deal?—The State Department issued an interpretive fact sheet on Iran’s nuclear framework before the deal was actually sealed. Ayatollah Ali Khamenei quickly denounced the fact sheet as “incorrect and contrary to the substance of the negotiations.” Why would the Obama administration claim victory in the middle of a sensitive negotiation, in a manner that prods the other side to harden its demands and encourages the unraveling of sanctions? No one believes that Obama would use force against Iran. And this means there is no theoretical limit to the concessions that could be justified to avoid conflict. The argument of “concessions or war” is another way of saying that any deal is better than no deal.
Alex Ryvchin: Palestinians Too Honest in their Hatred to Hold Our Sympathy—The documentary “Pitch Battle” chronicles the journey of the Palestine football team to the 2015 Asian Cup in Australia. Amr Hannoun, the team’s media officer, has a jovial disposition and radiant smile. But soon Hannoun reveals his true nature. He defends suicide bombings against Israeli civilians. “We have to kill them,” he flashes. “We need our land back from the river to the sea,” Hannoun insists. He demands all of the land from the Jordan River to the Mediterranean Sea, meaning the annihilation of Israel. No Jewish State in any borders. The other leading man in the film is the head of the Palestinian Football Association, Jibril Rajoub. FIFA must expel Israel, he tells the media. Israelis mustn’t be allowed to play soccer with other countries. It is not enough for the Palestinians to achieve full-member status in FIFA. They demand Israel’s expulsion. The Palestinian cause fails again and again to achieve its goals because it is predicated on destruction rather than creation, on denying the rights of others rather than establishing rights for themselves.

Blessings in the Book of Revelation is a book that you need to read, especially now. There are blessings throughout the Scriptures but Revelation is the only book in the Bible actually containing a specific blessing for reading it. It’s repeated twice, once at the beginning and again at the end. This is the reason that I believe Revelation should be the first step toward studying biblical prophecy.
