Ishaan Tharoor—When some Americans opposed the creation of Israel:
A new Israeli election ad released by the Likud party of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu invokes the past to boost the premier’s political future.
The video harks back to the moment of Israel’s founding in 1948, “painting a picture,” as the Times of Israel puts it, “of an embattled national figure who had to make the critical decision of declaring independence against the wishes” of eminent figures in Washington.
The embattled national figure is Israel’s first prime minister, David Ben-Gurion. His “critical decision” is that of declaring Israel’s independence in 1948 despite the opposition of then U.S. Secretary of State George C. Marshall (yes, the man with the plan). It’s a historical reference that is intended to draw immediate parallels to the contentious present, with Netanyahu set to make a controversial speech in Washington on the threat of Iran no matter the stated disapproval of the White House.
“Ben-Gurion — contrary to the State Department’s position — announced the establishment of the state,” the ad says. “Would we be here today if Ben-Gurion hadn’t done the right thing?” It then flashes the slogan: “Only the Likud, Only Netanyahu.”
Confronted with an election he very well may lose, the Israeli premier is doubling down on his supposed security chops. The gambit is to be expected, given Netanyahu’s penchant for ungainly historical metaphors. But it’s a reference that may surprise Americans, who consider their nation an ever-present ally of Israel.
In fairness, the United States was the first country to de facto recognize Israel — just 11 minutes after Israel had declared its independence at 12:01 on May 15, 1948. But the days preceding that moment had been fraught and acrimonious in the White House.

SnyderTalk Comment: Thinking people can’t help but wonder what all the fuss is about. Prime Minister Netanyahu is coming to the United States to address Congress at the invitation of the House Speaker. He’ll tell Congress what he thinks about the Iran situation.
What’s the big deal?
Those are the facts of the case, but behind the scenes, we see the Obama administration going crazy. They are doing everything in their power to defeat Netanyahu in the upcoming Israeli election and to derail his speech.
Is it just bad chemistry between Obama and Netanyahu? How could that be? Bad chemistry between people who rarely meet face-to-face doesn’t produce that kind of animosity. We are witnessing something that looks like an irrational obsession. Why?
Obama administration officials say that Netanyahu broke protocol. They say that Netanyahu should have rejected an invitation to speak from anyone except the president. That doesn’t make any sense. Congress is not an arm of the executive branch of government, and Netanyahu doesn’t work for Obama.
What about freedom of speech and the right to assemble peacefully? Those are Constitutional protections that trump hard feelings.
Most members of Congress don’t trust the president. Few if any Congressional leaders are privy to the details of the impending Iran deal. They are as in the dark about it as they were about Obamacare. We know how that turned out. Congress voted on legislation that no one had read and few had seen. Merely asking questions earned members of Congress places on Obama’s hit list.
“You’ll know what’s in it when you see it,” then House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said about Obamacare. Obama’s signature piece of legislation is the law of the land now, and we still don’t know what’s in it. All we know for sure is that it is an expensive mess that accomplishes virtually nothing.
As important as healthcare is, a nuclear Iran is potentially much more important. Iran already has missiles that are capable of reaching Europe, and no part of the Middle East is beyond the reach of Iranian rockets. Iran is developing missiles that can reach the U.S. Nuclear warheads on those missiles would bring about a global political change the likes of which we haven’t seen since the rise of Nazi Germany.
Netanyahu’s concerns about a nuclear Iran are rational and understandable. Iranian leaders have singled out Israel as the one country in the world that they intend to “wipe of the map”.
We may not know everything there is to know about Iran, but we do know this: Iranian leaders are tyrannical and they say what they mean regardless of the consequences. If I was in Netanyahu’s shoes, I would be concerned, too.
If the facts of the Iran negotiations support Obama, he has nothing to fear from anything that Netanyahu might say. If, on the other hand, the facts don’t line up with Obama’s rhetoric, he has a lot to fear and so do we.
The unfolding melodrama is revealing. Obama doesn’t want Netanyahu to deliver a speech about Iran to Congress—not now, not ever under any circumstances.
Why? Thinking people believe that Obama is trying to hide something. Given the history of Obamacare, that should surprise no one.
Obama is losing the battle for the hearts and minds of the America people. Gallop polls show that support for Israel among U.S. citizens is very strong, so Obama has turned his attention to the Israeli election that will take place in mid-March.

This Jerusalem Post article is revealing: “Top US political consultant says Netanyahu-Obama spat endangers support for Israel”. In a nutshell, Obama is telling the Israeli people that if Netanyahu is reelected and especially is he delivers a speech to the U.S. Congress, there will be hell to pay. Obama is trying to scare the Israeli people into voting Netanyahu out of office.
Will Obama’s scheme work? We’ll know in a few days.
The Israeli people should not take Obama’s bait. Israel enjoys U.S. support because of wide-spread popular support for Israel in the U.S. especially among Christians.
Politicians like Obama come and go, but the populace remains. As long as there is support for Israel among the American people, politicians will support Israel. They don’t have a choice. If popular support for Israel wanes, so will political support.

Obama is playing with fire at home, and there is a very good chance that he and Democrats who support him will get burned badly. That’s as it should be.

Also see “Benjamin Netanyahu declines to meet Senate Dems”. Good for Netanyahu. That’s exactly what he should have done. Democrats, especially Senate Democrats, have stood shoulder-to-shoulder with Obama for six long years as he worked to undermine Israel. Why should Netanyahu give them a “Get Out of Jail Free” card?
Connect the dots. Obama’s agenda launched the Arab Spring. It turned into a nightmare for the Middle East, North Africa, and Israel. It ignited a new round of Islamist terrorist attacks in Europe against Jewish people. It led to Russian adventurism and motivated Russian support for Iran.

This is my advice for the Israeli people: don’t trust Obama, and don’t trust Israeli politicians who are favored by him. Obama likes them for a reason. Livni is a perfect case in point. I refer to her as Obama’s lapdog. Is Herzog different? I doubt it.
Things can get much worse if we continue down the path that Obama prefers. Obama lite politicians in Israel are just as dangerous as he is.

David Horovitz: Now We Know Who to Believe on Iran— After anonymous sources in Jerusalem leaked in recent weeks the ostensible terms of the deal being hammered out with Iran, various U.S. government spokespeople contended that the Israeli government was misrepresenting the specifics and sneered that Israel didn’t actually know what the terms were. Yet among the terms of the deal being reported by the Associated Press from Geneva on Monday are precisely those that were asserted in recent weeks by the Israeli sources. Iran is to be allowed to keep 6,500 centrifuges spinning, and there will be a clause providing for an end to intrusive inspections in some 10-15 years. There is also no indication of restrictions on Iran’s missile development. Israel’s most respected Middle East affairs analyst, Channel 2 commentator Ehud Ya’ari, noted that the isolation of Iran even by Israel’s key allies was already cracking, with the firmly pro-Israel foreign minister of Australia, Julie Bishop, announcing an imminent visit to Tehran. Ya’ari also noted that the International Atomic Energy Agency has made clear that it lacks the tools to effectively monitor the kind of nuclear program that Iran will be allowed to maintain under the emerging deal.
Mitch Ginsberg: Mossad cables hardly contradict Netanyahu on Iran— To contradict, according to the Oxford English Dictionary online, is to “deny the truth of (a statement) by asserting the opposite. Used in a sentence, it might look like this: “Leaked cables show Netanyahu’s Iran bomb claim contradicted by Mossad” – which is fine in terms of usage, at least in the condensed prose of headlines, but only partially supported by the evidence provided by The Guardian and Al-Jazeera. The two media outlets on Monday published a “secret” memo from the Mossad to its South African counterpart, the State Security Agency. The Guardian underscored this fragment of a sentence: “Iran at this time is not performing the activity necessary to produce weapons…” and claimed that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s “inflammatory rhetoric” and “alarmist tone” in describing the threat emanating from Tehran were directly at odds with the Mossad’s allegedly far more sanguine assessment. Here’s the passage from Netanyahu’s 2012 UN General Assembly address that The Guardian highlighted: “By next spring, at most by next summer, at current enrichment rates, they will have finished the medium enrichment and move[d] on to the final stage. From there, it’s only a few months, possibly a few weeks, before they get enough enriched uranium for the first bomb.”
Raphael Ahren: Expert: Bad Iran Deal Neglects Weaponization—Emily Landau, a senior research associate at the Institute for National Security Studies, saidMonday that the emerging nuclear deal with Iran is deeply flawed because it neglects to address the issue of weaponization. “Iran has violated the Nuclear Nonproliferation Treaty for decades by working on nuclear weapons capabilities. This has to be at the center of the discussion.” Yet “the issue of weaponization hardly gets mentioned in the reports about the upcoming agreement.” Another issue that should be addressed by any deal is Iran’s development of intercontinental ballistic missiles, she added. “These ICBMs are not non-nuclear, they are delivery systems for nuclear weapons.” “Most nuclear experts think it’s a bad deal. The doubts, skepticism and deep, deep concern with regards to the negotiations is really much broader than Israeli officials and hawks in Congress,” she said.
George Jahn and Bradley Klapper: Looming Iran deal would restrict nuke activity for a decade, then ease off— Edging toward a historic compromise, the U.S. and Iran reported progress Monday on a deal that would clamp down on Tehran’s nuclear activities for at least 10 years but then slowly ease restrictions on programs that could be used to make atomic arms. Officials said there were still obstacles to overcome before a March 31 deadline, and any deal will face harsh opposition in both countries. It also would be sure to further strain already-tense U.S. relations with Israel, whose leaders oppose any agreement that doesn’t end Iran’s nuclear ambitions. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is expected to strongly criticize the deal in an address before Congress next week. Still, a comprehensive pact could ease 35 years of U.S-Iranian enmity — and seems within reach for the first time in more than a decade of negotiations.
Herb Keinon: Israel Sees Erosion of Western Resolve on Iran—In 2006, “the position of the world powers was that Iran should have no centrifuges,” said an Israeli official, referring to a binding UN Security Council resolution calling on Iran to suspend uranium enrichment. “Then, in the [2013] interim agreement, they [the P5+1] accepted the concept of some sort of symbolic enrichment, to allow the Iranians to save face. If we are now talking about thousands of centrifuges, it is clear that we are not discussing something symbolic but a vast industrial capacity which is ultimately very, very dangerous.” According to reports, an emerging deal would allow Iran to retain some 6,500 centrifuges.
Nasser Al-Haqbani: Iran Coordinating with Al-Qaeda Since 2007 to Target U.S. Interests in Saudi Arabia and Dubai—Iran has been coordinating with al-Qaeda and its affiliates since 2007 to carry out terror attacks against U.S. targets in Dubai and Saudi Arabia, informed sources have told Asharq Al-Awsat. Saudi citizen Saleh Al-Qarawi, founder of the Abdullah Al-Azzam Brigades, is the main al-Qaeda figure coordinating operations from inside Iran.
Armin Rosen: An Iran Nuclear Deal Is Coming into Focus, But There’s One Glaring Problem—U.S. negotiators believe restrictions on enrichment and rigorously enforced enriched uranium stockpile limits will be able to prevent Tehran from accumulating enough highly enriched uranium to construct a nuclear weapon undetected. By this logic, the problem with Iran’s nuclear program isn’t its 19,000 centrifuges, secretive and heavily guarded nuclear facilities, weaponization and advance centrifuge research, Revolutionary Guards Corps involvement, ballistic-missile program, and plutonium reactor. If Iran were really building a nuclear program for purely civilian reasons, it could just purchase all of its enriched uranium from a foreign seller. Even the U.S. actually imports the vast majority of its enriched uranium and has no currently operating industrial-scale enrichment facilities, says Olli Heinonen, former deputy director general for safeguards at the International Atomic Energy Agency. Allowing Iran to keep 4,500-6,500 centrifuges would be to let Tehran remain within striking distance of building a nuclear weapon. Under an agreement that allows Iran to keep thousands of centrifuges, Iran will be given a green light to enrich uranium – something it has no practical need to do – thanks to decades of recalcitrance, single-minded policy dedication, and outright deceit.
Hannah Allam: Ex-U.S. Envoy No Longer Backs Arming Syrian Rebels—Former U.S. ambassador to Syria Robert Ford has dropped his call to provide weapons to the rebels. Instead, he’s become increasingly critical of them as disjointed and untrustworthy because they collaborate with jihadists. Ford explained in an interview last week that without a strong central command or even agreement among regional players that al-Qaeda’s Nusra Front is an enemy, the moderates stand little chance of becoming a viable force, whether against Assad or the extremists. Ford said part of the problem was that too many rebels – and their patrons in Turkey and Qatar – insisted that Nusra was a homegrown, anti-Assad force when in fact it was an al-Qaeda affiliate whose ideology was virtually indistinguishable from the Islamic State’s. The U.S. already has suffered a string of embarrassments involving supplies it’s donated to the rebels ending up in the hands of U.S.-designated terrorist groups. Ford also said the latest U.S. approach of building a new, handpicked paramilitary to focus on the Islamic State was doomed; there are far too few fighters to take the project seriously.
Times of Israel Staff: Arab nations said deeply worried by Iran nuke deal— Arab nations have joined Israel in expressing concern over the emerging details of a US-led international nuclear deal with Iran, indicating in private talks with US officials that they are worried about the apparent terms of the agreement, the Wall Street Journal reported Saturday. Though Arab officials have been careful not to side with Israel in their stated positions, their worries over the possibility of a nuclear-armed Tehran are in fact similar to those of Jerusalem, and their attitudes towards the current state of nuclear talks between Tehran and Western powers are similarly pessimistic, according to the report. Leaders of Sunni states such as Egypt, Qatar, the United Arab Emirates and Saudi Arabia fear a bad deal with Tehran would allow it, with the removal of sanctions, to become a nuclear threshold state, the WSJ reported. They say it could also lead to a nuclear arms race in the region. “At this stage, we prefer a collapse of the diplomatic process to a bad deal,” an official from an unnamed Arab nation told the paper.
Khaled Abu Toameh: Empowering Women, Palestinian-Style— It is not easy to be a woman living under the Hamas regime in the Gaza Strip. Women face many restrictions, including not being able to go to the beach alone or even smoke in a public place. In addition, it is forbidden for a woman to be seen in public with a man who is not her husband, father or brother. Women are also forced to adhere to a strict Islamic dress code in public, which includes a cloak and a veil covering their hair (hijab), especially at university and college campuses and work offices. However, these severe restrictions do not apply to women who are prepared to become “martyrs” in the fight against Israel. So while a woman is barred from smoking in a café or restaurant, or walking in public unaccompanied by a male relative, she is permitted to join a military training camp in preparation for war against Israel.

Child brides and buying brides (mostly in return for gold or cattle), are fine. Killing your daughter because she was raped is from a tradition to protect family honor. Killing your daughter because she fell in love with a boy is also normal. Covering up such horrible crimes is fine, too. But a boy putting on an earring would be unacceptable. President Recep Tayyip Erdogan was angry because feminists had objected to his remark that, “in Islam, women are entrusted to men.” Murders of women in Turkey, between 2002 and 2009, have risen by 1,400%. — BBC report, 2013.
