Shiryn Ghermezian—Columbia Leads List of America’s Top 10 Colleges ‘With Worst Antisemitic Activity’:

New York’s Columbia University is home to the worst antisemitic activity in the United States, according to a list compiled by the David Horowitz Freedom Center, a conservative think-tank based in California.

The Center unveiled its first list of the 10 US campuses with the worst antisemitic activity in 2014 as part of a new campaign entitled “Jew Hatred on Campus,” aimed at bringing awareness to antisemitism at colleges and universities throughout the nation. The group also says it seeks to encourage university administrators to withdraw privileges from the groups that spread hate on the campuses.

According to the Center, Columbia University is listed first because it is home to the “most well-known antisemitic professors in the nation such as Rashid Khalidi and Joseph Massad, who has been accused of harassing Jewish students on multiple occasions. In addition, it is home to a highly active SJP chapter that has recently brought BDS founder Omar Barghouti and disgraced antisemitic professor Steven Salaita to campus.”

The Center also cited a number of offending events held at Columbia University in 2014, such as Israeli Apartheid Week and a protest with signs that read “Call to Action: Stand with Gaza.”

SnyderTalk Comment: Columbia University has been on my radar screen for some time.  A few years ago when Columbia hosted then Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad while he was in New York to address the United Nations, I wrote Columbia’s president, Lee Bollinger, an email in which I told him how negatively the decision to provide Ahmadinejad with a high-profile academic platform to spew his anti-Israel venom would affect his school’s image.  Bollinger didn’t withdraw his invitation to Ahmadinejad, but obviously others did the same or similar things because Bollinger used his introductory remarks to lambast the Iranian regime for a whole host of human rights violations.

As a retired university professor, I have a keen interest in the way universities are run.  I am particularly concerned about prestigious universities that have strayed far afield.  Universities have a privileged place in our society, and the money they attract is mindboggling.  Columbia’s endowment alone exceeds $8 billion.  Columbia and other prestigious universities use their endowments and other sources of funds at their disposal to play an activist role in remaking the world in the image of the people who run them.

In January, U.S. News & World Report published an article titled “10 Universities With the Largest Financial Endowments”. Their top 10 list is below:

  • Harvard– $32,689,489,000
  • Yale— $20,708,793,000
  • Princeton— $18,786,132,000
  • Stanford— $18,688,868,000
  • MIT— $10,857,976,000
  • Michigan— $8,272,366,000
  • Columbia— $8,197,880,000
  • Texas A&M— $8,072,054,790
  • Pennsylvania— $7,741,396,000
  • Notre Dame— $6,959,051,000

High-profile universities have become fundraising machines that are bastions of liberal progressive propaganda.  For many of them, teaching students has become a loss leader that attracts wealthy donors who happily donate money with few if any strings attached in exchange for memorializing their names.  I saw it happen at my university, the University of Virginia.  UVA’s endowment is more than $6 billion.  Today, it isn’t the same school that it was in 1979 when my academic career began.  In some ways it’s better.  In other ways it’s much worse.  You can make a strong argument that at UVA fundraising is the tail that wags the dog.  That’s true for other high-profile schools, too.

This is an aside, but not an insignificant one.  College athletics, football and basketball in particular, are fundraising tools for universities.  That’s why most university administrators overlook serious infractions by “student athletes” and coaches if they can help their teams win; that’s why college coaches earn millions of dollars a year; and that’s why colleges don’t want to pay players what they are worth to their schools.  I’ll stop there, but college athletics is in serious need of repair.

I don’t want this comment to be a diatribe on academic institutions, but I do want to make a critical point.  Universities are not as accountable as they should be, and they have too much unrestricted money to spend.  That’s what enables them to advance agendas that have little or nothing to do with higher education.  It’s time to hold their feet to the fire, so to speak, and let them feel effects of close scrutiny.  Oversight is a good practice anyway, and it’s something that university administrators have been insulated from.  It’s time for that to change.

If you haven’t read my novel Stand!, I urge you to order a copy from Amazon.  It provides insights into higher education that you won’t get from the New York Times and other mainstream media outlets.

13--Perspectives 2

Dr. Haim Shine: Israel must rely only on itself— The U.S. government is involved up to its neck in Israel’s upcoming elections. U.S. President Barack Obama and his advisers have been trying to grab our country by the throat in an attempt to coerce Israel to act against its existential interests. The White House prefers that the weak Left win the March 17 elections and establish a leftist government that would have no problem with making dangerous concessions such as returning to the 1967 borders, dividing Jerusalem and granting the Palestinians the right of return. At a time when the whole world is under attack by Islamic terrorism, Obama is determined to sign a deal with the regime of the ayatollahs in Iran that would enable Iran to continue advancing its nuclear program without interference. An American president who enables terrorists to get their hands on nuclear weapons would be signing a death warrant for Western civilization.

Kendall Breitman: Gallup poll: Democrats losing sympathy for Israel—The number of Democrats who feel more sympathetic toward Israelis than Palestinians has dropped 10 points in one year, according to a new poll. In a Gallup poll released Monday, less than half of Democrats — 48 percent — say they sympathize more with Israelis than Palestinians when it comes to tensions in the Middle East. By contrast, 83 percent of Republicans sided with Israel. Fifty-nine percent of Independents answered similarly. The percentage of Republicans who support Israel has risen in recent years. In a 2000 Gallup poll, about 53 percent of Republicans expressed sympathy for the Jewish state and that number has been steadily increasing. In this most recent poll from Gallup, only 7 percent of Republicans sided with Palestinians.

SnyderTalk Comment: Democrats are not “losing sympathy” for Israel.  They lost sympathy for Israel a long time ago.  If you didn’t know it before the Democratic National Convention in 2012 when they booed God as a group, you should have connected the dots.  If you stand with Yahweh, you can’t support Democrats.  That’s not a political statement.  It’s a statement of fact.  I don’t want to take sides against Yahweh.  That is a mistake with grave consequences.

Maj. Gen. (ret.) Yaakov Amidror: An American About-Face, into the Arms of Iran—During my visit to the U.S. two weeks ago I heard from several people that senior State Department officials were trying to sell Washington on the idea that a nuclear agreement with Iran will contribute to regional stability in the Middle East, and that future relations between Iran and the U.S. will advance U.S. interests; an American U-turn, heading toward a special relationship with Iran. If this relationship materializes, it is clear the U.S. would be jeopardizing Israel’s security for the sake of a sudden experimental partnership with a country that openly declares its intention to harm and even destroy Israel. None of the people I spoke with mentioned the White House or the president as the ones promoting the idea. If the rumor is indeed true, this perception is based on a misunderstanding of Iran’s intentions and its way of thinking about the Muslim world and its place in it. This misunderstanding stems from ignoring the Islamic republic’s political culture, its negotiation methods and its willingness to peddle illusions to its adversary (as a religious imperative). This miscalculation is compounded by the inexplicable and historically unfounded optimism over the ability of any type of deal to change the Iranian attitude.

Dennis Ross: The U.S.-Israel Divide on Iran—President Obama is clearly prepared to accept a deal that would limit the Iranian nuclear program for perhaps the next 15 years and in a way that ensures the Iranians would be a year away from being able to produce weapons-grade uranium. Iran, however, would not be required to dismantle any nuclear facilities or infrastructure – and, after the agreement expires, would be permitted to have an industrial-size nuclear program. In Prime Minister Netanyahu’s view, however, that means leaving Iran as a nuclear-threshold state. My conversations with Israelis suggest that they could, in fact, live with an agreement that permits Iran a small enrichment capability. Their view is that, in return for a rollback of sanctions, there must be a serious rollback of the Iranian nuclear program. By contrast, the deal reportedly under consideration would limit the Iranian nuclear program, not meaningfully diminish it, in return for a rollback of sanctions. The Israelis argue that if Iran is permitted to have an industrial-size nuclear energy program, it would be able to become a nuclear weapons state at a time of its choosing. Indeed, the transparency or verification system needed to detect a breakout by a small program is unlikely to work for a very large one.

Bassam Tawil: Hero of the Middle East: Abdel Fattah el-Sisi— Sheikh Dr. Ahmed al-Tayyeb, the Grand Imam of Cairo’s Al-Azhar University, the seat of Sunni Islam, yesterday delivered a courageous, historic speech in Mecca, Saudi Arabia, urging reform in religious education to curb extremism in Islam. Al-Tayyeb’s address was the result of an even more courageous and historic speech, delivered a few weeks ago by Egypt’s devoutly Muslim President, Abdel Fattah el-Sisi, at Al-Azhar University. El-Sisi’s monumental statement, truly worthy of a Nobel Prize [especially compared with President Obama], is having a seismic result. Al-Sisi directed his remarks, about the ills of Islam to Islamic clerics in Egypt and around the world. It was enormously brave of him. He did not single out radical Islam, but he did call on all Muslims to examine themselves, carry out a religious revolution and renew their faith.

MEMRI: Egyptian Muslim Brotherhood Calls for Armed Revolution Against Al-Sisi—The Egyptian Muslim Brotherhood (MB) has recently called for using terrorism and violence against the Egyptian regime and even for assassinating President al-Sisi. An MB communique called on movement activists to prepare for a lengthy and uncompromising jihad and warned foreign diplomats to leave Egypt by Feb. 28, or else be targeted for attack.

Voice of America: Report to Allege Direct Kremlin Link to Ukraine Invasion—The editor of a leading independent Russian newspaper says he plans this week to publish what purports to be an official Kremlin strategy document outlining Russia’s 2014 invasion of Ukraine.  Novaya Gazeta editor Dmitri Muratov said the document appears to have been prepared weeks before Ukraine’s pro-Russian President Viktor Yanukovych was driven from office in February 2014, following weeks of anti-government protests in Kyiv.  Muratov’s disclosure came in an interview with Moscow’s Ekho Moskvy radio.  He did not reveal how the document was obtained, but said he is confident it is authentic.  Muratov quotes the 2014 document as saying Moscow was obliged to intervene in Ukraine to protect against the possible loss of the Ukrainian market for Russia’s natural gas.  He said the document also noted the risks to the Russian economy and to western European consumers, if Moscow were to lose control of pipelines carrying natural gas through Ukraine to Western markets.

SnyderTalk Comment: Watch out.  The Russian bear is on the prowl with a growl.  In Russia today, publishing articles like the one mentioned in this article can cost you your life or prison time or both thanks to Vladimir Putin.  He doesn’t like criticism especially from Russians.

Lawrence Solomon: Jewish (capital) flight from Europe— “Don’t leave,” Europe’s presidents and prime ministers tell their Jews following every new act of terrorism. “We’ll protect you and your synagogues from harm.” Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu offers opposite advice. “This wave of terror attacks can be expected to continue, including anti-Semitic and murderous acts. We say to the Jews, to our brothers and sisters, Israel is your home and that of every Jew. Israel is waiting for you with open arms.” Europe’s leaders doubtless feel guilt at their inability to protect their Jews, and don’t want their countries to be branded as anti-Semitic. They would also feel shame if members of their storied families left — the Chagalls of France for example, or the Marks (of Marks and Spencer) of England.

Alex Perry: On the Trail of Britain’s Homegrown Jihadis— Not so long ago, in a land not far away, the British man who would become an icon to a generation of European Islamists fighting and dying in Syria and Iraq sat down before a webcam in his parent’s modest home on England’s south coast and filmed a 90-minute tutorial on how to tie a turban. The image was badly lit but sharp enough to reveal the figure of a young man with extravagant black hair. To the back and sides it fell in long, thick loops, tumbling onto the upturned collar of a docker’s jacket where it executed a final exuberant ski-jump. The front was more delicate: single, thin strands spilling like poured water down over his forehead, past his black eyes, his noble nose and full mouth, extending to his black beard.

Michael Curtis: Purim in Persia and Iran— During his visit to the White House on March 5, 2012, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu gave President Barack Obama a copy of the Book of Esther (the Megillah), the biblical story of the plan by the chief minister of the great Persian Empire to annihilate all the Jews in the kingdom. To understand the Middle East today, it’s worth reading. The story relates that the King Ahasuerus (perhaps Xerxes 1), after executing his wife Queen Vashti, married Esther who did not mention she was Jewish. Haman, the king’s vizier (chief adviser), was annoyed that Mordechai, her cousin, had refused to bow to him. As a result, Haman convinced the king to issue a decree ordering the extermination of all Jews. This genocide was to be implemented on one day, the 13th of the Hebrew month of Adar, a date chose by lot (in Persian, pur).

Samuel Westrop: British Lawmakers Blind to Iranian Ambition— A peaceful Middle East and a nuclear-free Iran, some British politicians claim, is only achievable if the “moderates” in Tehran can be won over. British Foreign Secretary Philip Hammond, in The Times, declared: “New sanctions legislation, which some in America are calling for, would undermine Iranian confidence in the negotiations and irreparably damage the chances of a deal. Hardliners in Tehran, who oppose any deal in principle, would be strengthened.” Similarly, Conservative MP John Baron has stated: “We should not forget, by the way, on Afghanistan and 9/11, that at least partly because of the West’s robust rebuttal of Iran’s overtures, the moderate President Khatami was removed and the hardliners again assumed the ascendency.”

Chelsea Garbell: A Pop Quiz To Get Into Synagogue— I rounded the corner and started examining the London townhouses, knowing the one I sought would be devoid of markers announcing any Jewish presence. Finally spotting the synagogue, I went to climb the stairs when, out of the corner of my eye, I saw two men in dark coats cross the street and call to me. I knew who they were and what they wanted. Questions and answers. “Where are you going?” “To synagogue.” “Where are you from?” I paused, because I’m never really sure of that answer any more. “New York. I work for New York University, I’m visiting.” “Where do you go to synagogue?” Again, I faltered. There were too many answers to that question. “Well, I’m originally from Seattle and there I went to Shevet Achim.”

Ephraim Asculai and Emily B. Landau: Much Ado at the Qusayr Site? A Syrian Nuclear Snapshot— On January 9, 2015, the German weekly Der Spiegel published an article alleging that Syria did not give up its nuclear weapons development ambitions following the destruction in 2007 of its almost completed, North Korean-constructed nuclear reactor near the town of Deir-al-Zor. Instead, according to Der Spiegel, Syria is in the process of erecting a new nuclear facility near the town of Qusayr, very close to the border with Lebanon. Syria has a long history of deception and lying to the international community on matters concerning its development and use of weapons of mass destruction. Therefore, any new information concerning these matters, even if highly speculative, should set the scene for further investigations, which in the past have revealed problematic Syrian intentions and activities in the chemical and nuclear realms.

Zalman Shoval: All the president’s critics— The race to the White House already has two frontrunners, both of whom have yet to declare their candidacies: Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and former Florida Governor Jeb Bush. Despite their different party affiliations, both have criticized the foreign policy coming out of 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue, including on the Middle East (although Clinton has been somewhat careful not to come out explicitly against President Barack Obama’s conduct). George W. Bush, Jeb’s brother, sought the Republican nomination more than a decade and a half ago. As soon as he launched his bid, observers in the U.S. and Israel predicted that his future administration would adopt the unfriendly policies of his father George H.W. Bush and former Secretary of State James Baker. But in 1999, Governor Bush invited me to his office at the Texas State Capitol and told me in no uncertain terms that he did not share his father’s attitude toward Israel. He said he would pursue an independent path and adopt a more friendly approach. One could have easily dismissed such statements as another election gimmick, but his actions as president proved he was not bluffing.

Shlomo Cesana: Why is Zionist Union hiding Livni?— Is the Zionist Union no longer “Winning Together”? The Labor-Hatnuah joint list has adopted a new strategy, hiding its No. 2, Tzipi Livni. The Zionist Union’s slogan of “Winning Together” — a reference to the partnership between Livni and leader Isaac Herzog — has been changed to “Herzog — A Reasonable and Responsible Leader.” The change was initiated by Reuven Adler, recently hired by the Zionist Union to serve as its chief strategist. The Zionist Union is publicly trying to downplay the change, but the message to campaign operatives has been clear — emphasize Herzog as the Zionist Union’s prime ministerial candidate and don’t mention the Herzog-Livni rotation agreement.

Scott Neuman: Homeland Security Chief: Threat to U.S. Malls “A New Phase” For Terrorists—Secretary of Homeland Security Jeh Johnson told CNN a video released by the Somali-based group al-Shabab “reflects [a] new phase” in which terrorist networks publicly call “for independent actors in their homelands to carry out attacks.” Focusing on the deadly 2013 assault on a mall in Nairobi, the video says: “If just a handful of mujahedeen fighters could bring Kenya to a complete stand-still for nearly a week, then imagine what a dedicated mujahedeen in the West could do to the American or Jewish-owned shopping centers across the world….What if such an attack was to occur in the Mall of America in Minnesota, or the West Edmonton Mall in Canada, or in London’s Oxford Street, or any of the hundred or so Jewish-owned Westfield shopping centers dotted right across the Western world?”

Herb Keinon: Israel: PA Is Not on Verge of Collapse—Assertions that the Palestinian Authority is on the verge of collapse because Israel is withholding monthly tax revenues are exaggerated, Israeli officials said Sunday, responding to claims from top U.S. and EU officials, including Secretary of State John Kerry. Israel has held up two monthly payments and the transfer of some $200 million in response to the PA joining the International Criminal Court and initiating proceedings against Israel. “We believe that people should focus on what brought about this situation, which is the PA breaking fundamental commitments to the peace process by going to the UN Security Council and the ICC,” one Israeli official said. He added that Israel could not be expected to sit idly by as the PA wages “diplomatic warfare” against it.

Jennifer Peltz and Tom Hays: US jury orders PLO to pay $218-million over terrorist attacks in Israel—The Palestine Liberation Organization and the Palestinian Authority were the catalysts for a series of terrorist attacks in the early 2000s in Israel that killed or wounded several Americans, a U.S. jury found Monday at a high-stakes civil trial. In finding the Palestinian authorities liable in the attacks, jurors awarded the victims $218.5 million in damages for the bloodshed. The U.S. Anti-Terrorism Act could allow for that to be tripled.

SnyderTalk Comment: And now for the bad news.  The PA can’t pay its electricity bill.  How are they going to pay the victims of their terrorist activities?  Answer: they can’t.  Donors will pay or no one will be paid.

Josh Hedtke: UCLA student told she could not serve because she is Jewish—A UCLA student this week declared in an op-ed in The Daily Bruin that members of the university’s student government should apologize for its recent discriminatory act. Written by student Rachel Frenklak, it highlighted an Undergraduate Students Association meeting last week during which many of its council members opposed the confirmation of a student to a subcommittee – based on the fact that she is Jewish. It was a clear and shocking example of anti-Semitism, and the incident has raced through social media outlets and prompted concern and outrage among many in the UCLA and Jewish communities.

US and Iran positive after nuclear talks, but say much left to do

SnyderTalk Comment: The fact that the U.S. and Iran are positive about a nuclear deal alarms me.  The Iranian foreign minister can’t even walk beside the U.S. secretary of state without being criticized by his fellow countrymen.  The optimism on both sides smells fishy.  I think it means that the U.S. has been taken to the cleaners, but Obama hasn’t said diddly-squat.  I wonder why.  I guess we won’t know what’s in the deal until we see it.  Thankfully, the GOP controls the Senate and the House.

4--Scripture of the Day Yahweh

Genesis 50: 1-6

1 Then Joseph fell on his father’s face, and wept over him and kissed him. 2 Joseph commanded his servants the physicians to embalm his father. So the physicians embalmed Israel. 3 Now forty days were required for it, for such is the period required for embalming. And the Egyptians wept for him seventy days. 4 When the days of mourning for him were past, Joseph spoke to the household of Pharaoh, saying, “If now I have found favor in your sight, please speak to Pharaoh, saying, 5 ‘My father made me swear, saying, “Behold, I am about to die; in my grave which I dug for myself in the land of Canaan, there you shall bury me.” Now therefore, please let me go up and bury my father; then I will return.’” 6 Pharaoh said, “Go up and bury your father, as he made you swear.”

14--Blessings from Revelation 2

Blessings in the Book of Revelation is a book that you need to read, especially now.  There are blessings throughout the Scriptures but Revelation is the only book in the Bible actually containing a specific blessing for reading it. It’s repeated twice, once at the beginning and again at the end. This is the reason that I believe Revelation should be the first step toward studying biblical prophecy. Though not easy to do, Revelation can be broken down and understood by anyone, not just the academic elite. So, Revelation’s blessings are for everyone.  Click here to order the eBook.  Click here to order the paperback.
