Of Course Israel is a Partisan Political Issue—It’s a Faith Issue, Too

In a blog for the Washington Post, Paul Waldman said,

When House Speaker John Boehner invited Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to address Congress without bothering to let the White House know, as is normal practice when dealing with foreign leaders, he no doubt thought he was getting a little sauce for the gander. You want to find ways to get Republicans mad, President Obama? Okay, how about if I invite the leader of one of our closest allies here to basically lobby against your position on Iran? How do you like that?

Boehner was right on that score: President Obama doesn’t like it very much. Neither did Nancy Pelosi, who blasted Boehner’s move this morning as “inappropriate,” adding: “It’s out of the ordinary that the Speaker would decide that he would be inviting people to a joint session without any bipartisan consultation.”

But maybe this skirmish over diplomatic protocol is a good thing for everyone. Maybe we can stop pretending that Americans and Israelis are nothing more than loving and committed allies offering unwavering support to one another, when the truth is that parties in both countries are active participants in each other’s partisan politics.

The current disagreement is about negotiations with Iran over its nuclear program. There’s a bill in the Senate, sponsored by Republican Mark Kirk and Democrat Bob Menendez, to impose new sanctions on Iran if a deal isn’t struck by June 30. The administration says that passing such legislation now, while the negotiations are at a sensitive point, would guarantee failure: the Iranians would pull out, then ramp up their nuclear program.

There is no question in my mind that Israel is and will continue to be a partisan issue.  I think that you have to be spiritually blind not to see it.  If you are a regular SnyderTalk reader, you know that I’ve been saying it for the past 7 years.  Actually, I’ve been saying it much longer than that, but that’s how long I’ve been posting SnyderTalk.

I know a woman in Texas who claims to be a strong Christian and an ardent supporter of Israel.  Even so, she is an enthusiastic Barack Obama supporter.  She was in 2008 and in 2012.  In 2008, I wrote it off because all I had to go on was Obama’s rhetoric.  He talked like someone who couldn’t be trusted, but by 2012, there were mountains of solid evidence that Obama was not a friend of Israel, that he was in favor of murder on demand, and that he opposed Yahweh’s explicit commands about sodomy.

When the woman approached me in 2012 just before the presidential election and tried to convince me that Obama was really a great friend of Israel and that Israeli leaders got along well with him, I wondered about her depth of knowledge, overall understanding, and faith.  I’m not Yahweh so I can’t and won’t judge her, but I will say this unapologetically: that’s not the kind of nonsense that I expect to come out of the mouth of a Christian, much less an Israel supporter.

I believe that when you reject Yahweh’s explicit commands and His promises to support a politician, you are abandoning Yahweh.  Actually, I think it’s worse than that.  I believe you are putting a false god in Yahweh’s place and violating the First Commandment.  I don’t care if you do it for political reasons or for any other reason.  The result is the same; it’s telling; and it’s dangerous.

The woman in question is a Democrat.  Always has been.  She even ran unsuccessfully for Congress as a Democrat.  Little did I know that her Democratic Party affiliation was more important to her than Yahweh.  Lesson learned.

If you are a Christian and you take your faith seriously, you must support Israel.  That means you should not get in line with anyone who opposes Israel especially if that person is the President of the United States—a Democrat, a Republican, or whatever.

Israel is not a perfect country.  No country is, but Israel has the unique distinction of being the only country in the world with a land grant from Yahweh that is sealed with His promises and His Name.  Rejecting that fact is denying Yahweh’s word and his promises and profaning His Name.

I know other “Christians” like her, but she’s the one I know best.  I fear for them because I believe that support for Jewish people in general and Israel in particular are tests of our faith.  I’ll go further than that.  I believe that today they are the crucial tests of our faith.  I’m not minimizing the importance of other things such as murder on demand and sodomy, but I think that Israel and Jewish people rank higher on the list.

Yahweh’s children have faith in Him even if they can’t see the whole picture and despite the fact that they are being lobbied hard to deny Him, His word, and His promises.  Yahweh’s enemies don’t couch it in those terms.  They are too clever for that, but that’s exactly what they are doing.  They are attempting to persuade us to reject Yahweh and to support things that are loathsome to Him.

I’m sure that the spiritual force of darkness that is behind their efforts has a big smile on his face when they show up in church or synagogue or other places where believers gather and sing Obama’s praises.  I think they are wolves in sheep’s clothing.  I’m certain that my assessment offends them, but that’s exactly what I think, and I won’t try to sugarcoat it to make them feel better.  More importantly, I’m much less concerned about their opinion of me than I am about my relationship with Yahweh.

If you call yourself a Christian and you don’t support Israel, I urge you to read your Bible carefully and pray.  Do you understand the significance of these verses?

The Jews then gathered around Him, and were saying to Him, “How long will You keep us in suspense? If You are the Christ, tell us plainly.” Jesus answered them, “I told you, and you do not believe; the works that I do in My Father’s name, these testify of Me. But you do not believe because you are not of My sheep. My sheep hear My voice, and I know them, and they follow Me; and I give eternal life to them, and they will never perish; and no one will snatch them out of My hand. My Father, who has given them to Me, is greater than all; and no one is able to snatch them out of the Father’s hand. I and the Father are one.” (John 10: 24-30)

Yahweh’s sheep hear His voice and they follow Him.  People who don’t hear His voice and follow Him are not His sheep.  That’s what He said.  They are like Balaam.  He had every opportunity to do the right thing, but he didn’t.  Don’t be like Balaam.

Caroline Glick: Iran, Obama, Boehner, and Netanyahu— Iran has apparently produced an intercontinental ballistic missile whose range far exceeds the distance between Iran and Israel, and between Iran and Europe. On Wednesday night, Channel 2 showed satellite imagery taken by Israel’s Eros-B satellite that was launched last April. The imagery showed new missile-related sites that Iran recently constructed just outside Tehran. One facility is a missile launch site, capable of sending a rocket into space or of firing an ICBM. On the launch pad was a new 27-meter long missile, never seen before. The missile and the launch pad indicate that Iran’s ballistic missile program, which is an integral part of its nuclear weapons program, is moving forward at full throttle. The expanded range of Iran’s ballistic missile program as indicated by the satellite imagery makes clear that its nuclear weapons program is not merely a threat to Israel, or to Israel and Europe. It is a direct threat to the United States as well. Also on Wednesday, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was invited to address a joint session of Congress by House Speaker John Boehner. Boehner has asked Netanyahu to address US lawmakers on February 11 regarding Iran’s nuclear program and the threat to international security posed by radical Islam.

Boaz Bismuth: The message is clear. Congress backs Israel— Washington — or to be more precise, the White House — is U.S. President Barack Obama’s home court. Congress, however, has become a hostile arena for Obama since the midterm elections in November. The Republican majority in both chambers there holds a different outlook from the president on a whole range of issues, both foreign and domestic. Obama’s biggest problem is that on the most important issue — a nuclear agreement with Iran that he hoped to make his legacy — the Democrats (for example, Senator Robert Menendez, the ranking Democrat on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee) are aligning themselves with the Republicans, not him.

Angus McDowall: Saudi Arabia’s King Abdullah dies, new ruler is brother Salman—Saudi Arabia’s King Abdullah died early on Friday and his brother Salman became king, the royal court in the world’s top oil exporter and birthplace of Islam said in a statement carried by state television. King Salman has named his half-brother Muqrin as his crown prince and heir. “His Highness Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud and all members of the family and the nation mourn the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Abdullah bin Abdulaziz, who passed away at exactly 1 a.m. this morning,” said the statement.

Con Coughlin: King Abdullah led a Saudi Arabia stuck between western allies and Islamic fundamentalists [a.k.a. Islamist terrorists]—For a country that gave the world al-Qaeda and Islamic State, it might not seem as though Saudi Arabia is a natural ally of the West. And yet, despite the very significant differences that exist between Riyadh and the Western world on issues such as Islamic fundamentalism and human rights, during the reign of the late King Abdullah the country nevertheless played a vital role in helping to protect Western interests. It should not be forgotten that when Abdullah acceded to the Saudi throne in August 2005, the country was still reeling from its controversial association with the September 11 attacks in 2001, when the majority of those responsible for the atrocities were identified as Saudi citizens. What is less well-known is that the development of al-Qaeda under Osama bin Laden, who was born and raised in Saudi before being forced to flee into exile because of his extreme ideology, led to a brutal civil war in Saudi itself, with the conservative-minded House of Saud trying to fight off the more extreme demands of al-Qaeda militants.

Nick Paton Walsh and Laura Smith-Spark: Yemen’s President, Cabinet resign— Yemen’s President resigned Thursday night shortly after his prime minister and the Cabinet stepped down: seismic changes in the country’s political scene that come just one day after the government and Houthi rebels struck a tentative peace deal meant to end days of turmoil. The resignations of Yemeni President Abdu Rabu Mansour Hadi and other officials are the latest fallout from the Houthis’ move in recent days to gain power in the capital, which included kidnapping Hadi’s chief of staff on Saturday and taking over the presidential palace on Tuesday. The chaos in Yemen is cause for concern far beyond the country’s borders. For the United States and its allies, Yemen’s government has been a key ally in the fight against al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula, the Yemen-based group linked to attacks such as the recent slaughter at French magazine Charlie Hebdo.

Defense One: Yemen’s Houthis Are a Reminder of Iran’s Sectarian Agenda— On the same day that US president Barack Obama warned Congress not to push for more sanctions against Iran, the regime in Tehran demonstrated why its threat to the world is not limited to nuclear weapons. The Houthi insurgents who have run amok in the Yemeni capital Sana’a have been backed with weapons, money, and training by Iran. To what end? Yemen, one of the world’s poorest nations, is no glittering prize for Tehran. Nor does it represent any direct threat to Iran. But the Houthis have one important thing in common with the Iranian regime: Shi’ism. And if the insurgents manage to extend their hold over Yemen, it will be a poke in the eye to Saudi Arabia, Iran’s main Sunni rival in a widening sectarian rift across the Muslim world.

Ariel Ben Solomon: Yemen falls into Iran’s orbit as region caught asleep at the wheel— Iran-backed Shi’ite Houthi rebels are on the verge of a coup in Yemen as Sunni rivals within the country and regionally seem helpless to stop them. Sunni countries in the region are distracted by more pressing instability at home and of the threat from Islamic State and other radical groups. The West, focused on Islamic State and its coordinated action in Syria and Iraq, sees Yemen as a side show. “GCC [the Gulf Cooperation Council] must intervene now to save Yemen,” the UAE-based Gulf News headlined its editorial on Tuesday, in a sign of the shock of Yemen’s Sunni Gulf neighbors. “Al Houthis already control 14 provinces out of 21,” the paper noted, adding that “the GCC cannot watch idly while the Iran-allied Al Houthis terrorize a neighboring country and flex their muscles in a region already riddled with conflicts.”

Andres Oppenheimer: Prosecutor tied Iran’s leader to 1994 bombing— Argentine prosecutor Alberto Nisman made headlines before his mysterious death last weekend by accusing President Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner of trying to cover up Iran’s role in the 1994 AMIA bombing in Buenos Aires, but there was another — more important — leader who was at the center of the deceased prosecutor’s probe: Iran’s president Hassan Rouhani. In several telephone conversations and e-mail exchanges I had with Nisman over the past three years, the prosecutor told me that Rouhani was among the top Iranian officials who had “participated in the decision” to bomb the AMIA Jewish community center in Buenos Aires. The attack left 85 dead and 300 wounded, and was the biggest terrorist bombing in the Western hemisphere before 9/11.

Warren Adler: Have Jews ever been safe in France?— There is a jewel of a museum in the Marais district of Paris. It is the Musée d’Art et d’Histoire du Judaïsme. It is housed in a beautiful mansion built in 1650, which was later turned into a hotel once inhabited by Jewish immigrants from Poland, Romania, and the Ukraine. For years, Marais has for years been the epicenter of Jewish life in France. It was largely depopulated during the Nazi occupation but has been rejuvenated in recent years by Jews who were escaping from persecution in the former French North Africa and returnees from Southern France who miraculously survived the Nazi collaborating Vichy government. Inside the museum are documents, paintings, decorative arts, and other precious items related to the Jewish presence in France. Established in 1986, it was designed to educate and remind people of the Jewish community’s extraordinary contribution to the cultural life of France, despite the fact that their numbers were decimated during World War II.

Gene Schwimmer: Has Bobby Jindal Read the Koran?— Rarely is a speech widely praised before it is even delivered.  But such was the case for the speech Louisiana Governor Bobby Jindal delivered to the Henry Jackson Society, a London-based think-tank, on January 18.  In that speech, Jindal spoke forthrightly about the rising menace of “Islamic extremism.” And the critics, as the saying goes, went wild.  Larry Kudlow’s article, “Jindal’s Brilliant Take on Radical Islam,” exemplifies the reaction of conservative pundits to Jindal’s speech.  In his article, Kudlow specifically praises this quote (emphasis mine): “Muslim leaders must make clear that anyone who commits acts of terror in the name of Islam is in fact not practicing Islam at all.  If they refuse to say this, then they are condoning these acts of barbarism.  There is no middle ground.” […] Jindal is absolutely right when he says, “Islam has a problem,” but saying that much and no more falls short of the goal.  Sisi, to his great credit, takes the baton and, unlike Jindal, courageously places the blame – and in front of an audience of religious authorities, no less – precisely where he – and you, and I, and all civilized people – know it belongs […]

4--Scripture of the Day Yahweh

Genesis 45: 24-28

24 So he sent his brothers away, and as they departed, he said to them, “Do not quarrel on the journey.” 25 Then they went up from Egypt, and came to the land of Canaan to their father Jacob. 26 They told him, saying, “Joseph is still alive, and indeed he is ruler over all the land of Egypt.” But he was stunned, for he did not believe them. 27 When they told him all the words of Joseph that he had spoken to them, and when he saw the wagons that Joseph had sent to carry him, the spirit of their father Jacob revived. 28 Then Israel said, “It is enough; my son Joseph is still alive. I will go and see him before I die.”

14--Blessings from Revelation 2

Blessings in the Book of Revelation is a book that you need to read, especially now.  There are blessings throughout the Scriptures but Revelation is the only book in the Bible actually containing a specific blessing for reading it. It’s repeated twice, once at the beginning and again at the end. This is the reason that I believe Revelation should be the first step toward studying biblical prophecy. Though not easy to do, Revelation can be broken down and understood by anyone, not just the academic elite. So, Revelation’s blessings are for everyone.  Click here to order the eBook.  Click here to order the paperback.
