All the Nations of the Earth are Gathering against Jerusalem

Two passages of scripture, one from the Old Testament and one from the New Testament, belong together.  The one in the Old Testament is Zechariah 12: 1-5:

The burden of the word of Yahweh concerning Israel. Thus declares Yahweh who stretches out the heavens, lays the foundation of the earth, and forms the spirit of man within him, “Behold, I am going to make Jerusalem a cup that causes reeling to all the peoples around; and when the siege is against Jerusalem, it will also be against Judah. It will come about in that day that I will make Jerusalem a heavy stone for all the peoples; all who lift it will be severely injured. And all the nations of the earth will be gathered against it. In that day,” declares Yahweh, “I will strike every horse with bewilderment and his rider with madness. But I will watch over the house of Judah, while I strike every horse of the peoples with blindness. Then the clans of Judah will say in their hearts, ‘A strong support for us are the inhabitants of Jerusalem through Yahweh Sabaoth, their God.’”

“All the nations of the earth will be gathered against” Jerusalem.  “All the nations” must include the United States, and it may be happening now.  From the passage you can tell that the gathering is part of a global war against Israel.

The passage in the New Testament is the last three verses of Matthew chapter 23.  The prelude, Matthew 23: 1-36, is a blunt presentation of Yahweh’s feelings about the Jewish religious leaders of the Messiah’s day.  He refers to them as hypocrites, sons of hell, fools, blind men, blind guides, whitewashed tombs, serpents, and a brood of vipers.

It’s hard to miss His point.  Yahweh blames Jewish religious leaders for leading His people astray.  Under their guidance, the Children of Israel were like sheep wandering aimlessly without a shepherd.

That wasn’t the first time that He had lambasted the priests.  For example, take a look at Ezekiel 34: 1-11:

Then the word of Yahweh came to me saying, “Son of man, prophesy against the shepherds [the priests] of Israel. Prophesy and say to those shepherds, ‘Thus says Adonai Yahweh, “Woe, shepherds of Israel who have been feeding themselves! Should not the shepherds feed the flock? You eat the fat and clothe yourselves with the wool, you slaughter the fat sheep without feeding the flock. Those who are sickly you have not strengthened, the diseased you have not healed, the broken you have not bound up, the scattered you have not brought back, nor have you sought for the lost; but with force and with severity you have dominated them. They were scattered for lack of a shepherd, and they became food for every beast of the field and were scattered. My flock wandered through all the mountains and on every high hill; My flock was scattered over all the surface of the earth, and there was no one to search or seek for them.”’”

Therefore, you shepherds, hear the word of Yahweh: “As I live,” declares Adonai Yahweh, “surely because My flock has become a prey, My flock has even become food for all the beasts of the field for lack of a shepherd, and My shepherds did not search for My flock, but rather the shepherds fed themselves and did not feed My flock; therefore, you shepherds, hear the word of Yahweh: ‘Thus says Adonai Yahweh, “Behold, I am against the shepherds, and I will demand My sheep from them and make them cease from feeding sheep. So the shepherds will not feed themselves anymore, but I will deliver My flock from their mouth, so that they will not be food for them.”’”

For thus says Adonai Yahweh, “Behold, I Myself will search for My sheep and seek them out.”

The priests during the Messiah’s day were even worse than the priests of Ezekiel’s time.  At the end of the passage from Ezekiel, Yahweh said, “Behold, I Myself will search for My sheep and seek them out.”  The Messiah came to fulfill Ezekiel’s prophecy, and the priests had Him crucified.

Many rabbis and priests during the Messiah’s day were expecting the Messiah’s arrival.  Thus, His advent came as no surprise to numbers of educated religious Jews, and some of them became believers.  They rejoiced at His coming and struggled when He was killed.  When they learned the purpose of His death, they rejoiced again.

Today, Jewish people don’t typically hear these facts at their synagogues because they fly in the face of Jewish tradition.  What a pity.

Matthew 23: 37-39 is the passage that goes hand-in-hand with Zechariah 12: 1-11.  In those three verses, the Messiah told us when He will return, and it coincides with the siege against Jerusalem:

“Jerusalem, Jerusalem, who kills the prophets and stones those who are sent to her! How often I wanted to gather your children together, the way a hen gathers her chicks under her wings, and you were unwilling. Behold, your house is being left to you desolate! For I say to you, from now on you will not see Me until you say, ‘Blessed is He who comes in the Name of Yahweh!’”

Who is the Messiah?

The Messiah is Yahweh and that’s the Name we should call Him.  He made that clear to Jeremiah:

“Behold, the days are coming,” declares Yahweh, “when I will raise up for David a righteous Branch; and He will reign as king and act wisely and do justice and righteousness in the land. In His days Judah will be saved, and Israel will dwell securely; and this is His Name by which He will be called, ‘Yahweh Tsidkenu.’” (Jeremiah 23: 5-6)

Yahweh Tsidkenu (pronounced “zi-kay-nu”) means “Yahweh our Righteousness”.  He came to save/deliver the Children of Israel, but their religious leaders rejected Him just as Jewish priests before them had done.  They were more concerned about their social, economic, and political standing than the job that Yahweh had given them to do.  Israel had to pay the price for their sin.

Instead of believing Him, they convicted Him of blasphemy during a sham trial before the high priest, Caiaphas, and then turned Him over to the Romans for crucifixion.  They conspired to murder the One who came to save/deliver them, but His death became our atoning sacrifice without which Yahweh could not forgive us.

I’m not excusing what they did.  I’m simply pointing out that Yahweh can take something that is perfectly evil and turn it into something that is perfectly good.  Their sin paved the way for our redemption, forgiveness, and salvation/deliverance.

When will the Messiah return?

Most Jewish people are still waiting for the Messiah to appear.  The leaders of the Jerusalem Great Synagogue believe that He will come to them, announce His arrival, and seek their authentication.  That’s not going to happen, and it’s presumptuous to think that it is.  Yahweh doesn’t need anyone’s approval.

Christians are waiting for Him to return, and Matthew 23: 37-39 tells us when it will happen.  He will return when Jewish people in Jerusalem, particularly the Jewish political and religious leaders in Jerusalem, recognize Him for who He is, call Him by His Name, and ask Him to deliver/save them.

That day may be closer than you think.

Don’t expect the Messiah’s return to be according to human plans.

In an article in The Atlantic titled “Even Israel’s Best Friends Understand That It Is Disconnecting from Reality”, Jeffrey Goldberg says that Israel is becoming a global pariah thanks to the willingness of her current leaders to defend the land that Yahweh gave them.  He doesn’t use those words, but that’s what he means.

Goldberg didn’t mention Yahweh or His promises at all in his article.  Writers for the popular press seldom do, but Yahweh and His promises are the only realities that matter.

You can’t fully appreciate what is going on in Israel without taking Yahweh into account.  That’s not “disconnecting from reality”.  It’s connecting with reality.

Goldberg concludes with a quote from The New York Jewish Week:

But it’s fair to ask just who is more detached from reality these days, the president of the U.S. and leader of the free world, or the leader of a small country almost totally dependent on American support? (It’s not so much the $3 billion a year in U.S. aid that counts as much as its support at the UN and in countless other ways that would be felt should the relationship continue to erode.)

Yahweh’s return will be a really big show.

Yahweh does things His way, and His way is breathtaking.  His return will be a big deal with a gigantic lightshow and fireworks galore.  There will be no mistaking His arrival.

Yahweh knows that Israel will not seek Him until they have no option left except Him.  Because of all the things that Jewish religious leaders have done over the centuries to demonize the Messiah and to prevent Jewish people from accepting Him, it won’t be easy for many of them to change direction.  Eventually, they will, though.  When they do, it will be because their predicament is so dire that they are finally willing to do what Yahweh has wanted them to do all along.  They must humble themselves and ask Him for help, and they must say clearly who they are asking.

That’s the way it is with salvation/deliverance.  Yahweh steps in when you step aside and let Him do His work.  As long as you think that you can handle things on your own, He will let you try.  When you admit that you can’t handle things and ask Him to take over, He will.

The Second Exodus

Yahweh doesn’t have an ego problem, but He wants people to know who He is and that He is Sovereign.  The best way to start thinking about Yahweh’s reappearance is to consider the Exodus from bondage in Egypt.  This is what He said about it:

“Say, therefore, to the sons of Israel, ‘I am Yahweh, and I will bring you out from under the burdens of the Egyptians, and I will deliver you from their bondage. I will also redeem you with an outstretched arm and with great judgments. Then I will take you for My people, and I will be your God; and you shall know that I am Yahweh your God, who brought you out from under the burdens of the Egyptians. I will bring you to the land which I swore to give to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, and I will give it to you for a possession; I am Yahweh.’” (Exodus 6: 6-8)

“I am Yahweh” says it all.  He wanted to make an indelible impression on the Children of Israel—one that they could not forget.  He wanted them to tell their children and their grandchildren about Him and how He delivered them.

The Ten Plagues on Egypt were designed with that thought in mind.  They showed that Yahweh alone is Sovereign, that He is greater than any so-called “god”, and that He is greater than any world leader including Pharaoh who thought of himself as a god.  Take a look and see what I mean:

  • The First Plague—Thus says Yahweh, “By this you shall know that I am Yahweh: behold, I will strike the water that is in the Nile with the staff that is in my hand, and it will be turned to blood.” (Exodus 7: 17) This plague demonstrated that Yahweh is greater than Hapi the spirit of the Nile and Khnum the guardian of the Nile.  To Egyptians, the Nile River had huge importance.  They depended on it for their sustenance.
  • The Fourth Plague—“But on that day I will set apart the land of Goshen, where My people are living, so that no swarms of flies will be there, in order that you may know that I, Yahweh, am in the midst of the land. I will put a division between My people and your people. Tomorrow this sign will occur.” (Exodus 8: 22-23) This plague showed that Yahweh is superior to Uatchit, an Egyptian god who manifested himself as a fly.
  • The Seventh Plague—“But, indeed, for this reason I have allowed you [Pharaoh] to remain, in order to show you My power and in order to proclaim My Name through all the earth.” (Exodus 9: 16) This plague proved that Yahweh is greater than Seth the protector of crops and Nut the sky goddess.
  • The Eight Plague—Then Yahweh said to Moses, “Go to Pharaoh, for I have hardened his heart and the heart of his servants, that I may perform these signs of Mine among them, and that you may tell in the hearing of your son, and of your grandson, how I made a mockery of the Egyptians and how I performed My signs among them, that you may know that I am Yahweh.” (Exodus 10: 1-2) This plague demonstrated that Yahweh greater than Isis the goddess of life and Seth again.

Yahweh also wanted to show the Children of Israel that He is greater than Osiris who was thought to be the “giver of life” and Pharaoh the King of Egypt:

“As for Me, behold, I will harden the hearts of the Egyptians so that they will go in [into the Red Sea] after them; and I will be honored through Pharaoh and all his army, through his chariots and his horsemen. Then the Egyptians will know that I am Yahweh, when I am honored through Pharaoh, through his chariots and his horsemen.” (Exodus 14: 17-18)

This is the point: Yahweh doesn’t just want to save/deliver Israel.  He wants to do it in such a way that everyone everywhere will know that the One who did it Yahweh—the Sovereign Creator.  Don’t expect it do look like “reality” from a human perspective, because it won’t.

Goldberg is wrong and so is The New York Jewish Week, but they are not the only ones.  Barack Obama, John Kerry, Jordan’s King Abdullah, and Vladimir Putin, are just a few of the others who are wrong as well.  Yahweh wants to teach them a lesson that they will never forget.  They couldn’t forget even if they tried.  Pharaoh didn’t get it.  Maybe they will, and maybe they won’t.

This is how Isaiah describes the Second Exodus:

  • “And there will be a highway from Assyria for the remnant of His people who will be left, just as there was for Israel In the day that they came up out of the land of Egypt.”(Isaiah 11:16)
  • “In that day Yahweh will start His threshing from the flowing stream of the Euphrates to the brook of Egypt, and you will be gathered up one by one, O sons of Israel.” (Isaiah 27: 12)
  • “And a highway will be there; it will be called the Way of Holiness; it will be for those who walk on that Way. The unclean will not journey on it; wicked fools will not go about on it. No lion will be there, nor any ravenous beast; they will not be found there. But only the redeemed will walk there, and those Yahweh has rescued will return. They will enter Zion with singing; everlasting joy will crown their heads. Gladness and joy will overtake them, and sorrow and sighing will flee away.” (Isaiah 35:8-10)

Yahweh’s return will not be a day for weeping.  It will be a day for rejoicing.  Weeping will come later when the Children of Judah realize what their forefathers did:

“I will pour out on the house of David and on the inhabitants of Jerusalem, the Spirit of grace and of supplication, so that they will look on Me whom they have pierced; and they will mourn for Him, as one mourns for an only son, and they will weep bitterly over Him like the bitter weeping over a firstborn.” (Zechariah 12: 10)

How significant will the Second Exodus be in the minds of Yahweh’s children?  Take a look:

“Therefore behold, days are coming,” declares Yahweh, “when it will no longer be said, ‘As Yahweh lives, who brought up the sons of Israel out of the land of Egypt,’ but, ‘As Yahweh lives, who brought up the sons of Israel from the land of the north and from all the countries where He had banished them.’ For I will restore them to their own land which I gave to their fathers.” (Jeremiah 16: 14-15)

The First Exodus will pale by comparison with the Second Exodus, because the Second Exodus will include both Jews and Gentiles who have saving faith in Yahweh.  This is how Yahweh explained it to Jeremiah:

“O Yahweh, my strength and my stronghold, and my refuge in the day of distress, to You the nations will come from the ends of the earth and say, ‘Our fathers have inherited nothing but falsehood, futility and things of no profit.’ Can man make gods for himself? [Yes] Yet they are not gods!

“Therefore behold, I am going to make them know—this time I will make them know My power and My might; and they shall know that My Name is Yahweh.”  (Jeremiah 16: 14-15 and 19-21)

The Hebrew word translated as “nations” is goyim.  It means Gentiles or people who are not Jewish.

Jeremiah chapter 16 shows how important it is to Yahweh for people to know Him by Name and to call Him by His Name.

Everyone will Know that There is One Elohim and His Name is Yahweh

No one except Yahweh knows exactly how these events will unfold, but you can be certain that they will be spectacular.  In the end, everyone—rich and poor, young and old, male and female, powerful and weak—will know who Yahweh is.  He is the One true Elohim, and Israel is the instrument that He chose to deliver His message.

If you have not read His Name is Yahweh, I urge you to read it.

Raymond Ibrahim: ISIS Snuffs Out Ancient Christianity— During the Islamic State’s June invasion and consolidation of Mosul, Iraq — where Christians have been present since the first century — countless atrocities against them were committed. Accordingly, the region is now reportedly empty of Christian presence. The Islamic State, among other acts, reinstituted the collection of jizya, the “tribute” conquered Christians (and Jews) were historically required to pay in order not to be killed in accordance with the Koran (9:29). In one instance, three Islamic State members burst into the home of a Christian family, demanding thejizya-money. When the father of the house pleaded that he did not have the money, the intruders raped his wife and daughter in front of him. The man was reportedly so traumatized that he committed suicide. Four other Christian women were killed for not wearing the Islamic veil.

Tovah Lazaroff: Netanyahu Accuses Islamic Fundamentalists of Spreading False Stories about the Temple Mount—The status quo on the Temple Mount will be maintained, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said on Sunday. Muslims worshipers could continue to pray at the Al-Aqsa Mosque and Israel had no plans to harm or destroy it. He accused Islamic fundamentalists of spreading false stories about Israeli actions on the Temple Mount by way of igniting religious violence. “We will certainly oppose all systematic and continuing attempts by Islamic extremist elements to stir up unrest. They would like to set a religious fire in Jerusalem and thereby ignite the entire Middle East,” Netanyahu told the cabinet.

Washington Post Editorial: President Obama Should Try to Reset Relations with Benjamin Netanyahu—The barnyard epithet directed at Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu by a “senior administration official” reflects an unreasonable and disproportionate reaction to Mr. Netanyahu’s resistance to U.S. nostrums on matters of crucial importance to his country – as well as rank unprofessionalism by one or more of the president’s senior aides. U.S. administrations have often clashed with Israeli governments. But presidents prior to Mr. Obama tended to smooth over differences, at least in public. They understood that an open rift with Israel could encourage political assaults on the Jewish state by U.S. allies and military adventurism by adversaries – such as Iran. Given the ongoing turmoil in the Middle East and the very real threat that it will spread and escalate, Mr. Obama would be wise to initiate a reset with Mr. Netanyahu.

Jonathan Spyer: In the Core Sunni-Shia War, the West Has No Ally—The West has no ground assets in Syria capable of destroying IS, and history contains no examples of states which were destroyed solely from the air. What is taking place in Iraq, Syria and increasingly also in Lebanon is a single, cross-border sectarian war, effectively pitting a Shia alliance led by the Iranians and including Hizbullah, the government of Iraq, Iraqi Shia militias and the Assad regime against a much more confused and disparate Sunni camp, of which IS is a mutated product. In the core Sunni-Shia war, the West has no ally. The Shia bloc constitutes the most powerful anti-Western alliance currently in existence in the Middle East. Among the Sunni Arabs, meanwhile, are some of the most brutal organizations ever to have emerged anywhere – such as IS. The victory of either camp would not constitute progress in any form for the people living in the states in question.

Ralf Hoppe, Maximilian Popp, Christoph Reuter and Jonathan Stock: The Kurds’ Lonely Fight Against Islamic State Terror—In a 50-sq.-km. area of rugged, mountainous territory in the Kurdish autonomous region in northern Iraq is the headquarters of the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK). It provides a home for PKK leadership in addition to training camps for fighters. It also has its own police force and courts. The surrounding hillsides are dotted with Humvees, captured by the PKK from the Islamic State terrorist militia, which had stolen them from the Iraqi army. It is here in the Qandil Mountains that PKK leaders coordinate their fight against Islamic State jihadists in the Syrian town of Kobani and in the Iraqi metropolis of Kirkuk, in addition to the ongoing battle in the Sinjar Mountains. Just a few years ago, the idea of the West working together with the PKK would have been preposterous. Over the past three decades, PKK has been responsible for the deaths of thousands of Turkish civilians. With an estimated size of 15,000 fighters, PKK is the strongest fighting force in the region and the only one that seems willing and able to put up a fight against Islamic State. They are disciplined and efficient in addition to being pro-Western and secular. It was the PKK that established a protective corridor in Sinjar that enabled tens of thousands of Yazidis to flee. It was also PKK that defended the cities of Makhmour and Kirkuk in Iraq against Islamic State militias.

Peter Martino: Can NATO Afford a War on Two Fronts?— It is always unwise to fight a war on two fronts, especially after defense cuts have undermined one’s military. But that seems to be where the West is heading. The Western allies are fighting ISIS in Syria and Iraq, while at the same time tensions are rising between NATO and Russia. The question is whether NATO can afford both after the cuts in its defense budgets of the past two decades.

Khaled Abu Toameh and Tovah Lazaroff: Report: U.S. to Unveil New Peace Talks Proposal—The U.S. is planning to present a proposal to resume the peace talks between Israel and the Palestinians after Tuesday’s mid-term elections, the Palestinian daily Al-Quds reported over the weekend. PLO chief negotiator Saeb Erekat is expected to meet with U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry on Monday in Washington. On Friday, Kerry phoned PA President Mahmoud Abbas to discuss the possibility of reviving the peace talks.

Maj. Gen. (ret.) Yaakov Amidror: Israeli-American Relations and the Iranian Nuclear Threat—Every year, the Americans give Israel a gift of about $3.5 billion for its defense needs (3/4 of which are to be used only for purchases from the U.S.). In addition, the U.S. partners with Israel in the development of anti-missile technology, there is robust intelligence cooperation, and the exchange of ideas between military commanders is extremely important to both sides. U.S. friendship is important to Israel in the diplomatic realm as well, especially in the international arena and in the UN. The Americans have brought the Iranians to the negotiating table, after imposing unprecedented sanctions and recruiting the Europeans to follow suit. However, at the negotiating table, the U.S. has created the impression that the ultimate agreement is more important to them than it is to the Iranians, and that they would do anything to avoid resorting to the military option.

Lazar Berman: PLO Expected to Reject U.S. Peace Framework—PA President Mahmoud Abbas will present to the Palestine Liberation Organization leadership an American framework for the resumption of peace talks with Israel, Israel Radio reported. The Palestinian newspaper al-Quds quoted sources who indicated that the PLO would reject the proposal.

Bassam Tawil: Who is the Real Chickenshit?— There is a civil war currently under way between radical Islam — motivated by imperialist fantasies of restoring the Islamic Caliphate — and the more moderate secular Muslim regimes that are seeking the path to modernization and progress. At the same time, Sunni Islam is in the midst of an increasingly violent crisis in its dealings with Shi’ite Iran, which looks as if it is about to be granted nuclear weapons capability, and which for decades quietly has been eyeing neighboring Arab oil fields. Into the middle of this explosive disarray, U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry and his supporters have thrown the accusation that it was actually Israel’s so-called refusal to reach a peace agreement that was responsible for the ripple effect that led to the creation of ISIS. This incorrect diagnosis of the situation merely postpones the West’s efforts to find a real, workable solution for the Palestinian issue.

14--Blessings from Revelation 2

Blessings in the Book of Revelation is a book that you need to read, especially now.  There are blessings throughout the Scriptures but Revelation is the only book in the Bible actually containing a specific blessing for reading it. It’s repeated twice, once at the beginning and again at the end. This is the reason that I believe Revelation should be the first step toward studying biblical prophecy. Though not easy to do, Revelation can be broken down and understood by anyone, not just the academic elite. So, Revelation’s blessings are for everyone.  Click here to order the eBook.  Click here to order the paperback.
