Turkey’s President Erdoğan Has Been Sleeping with the Enemy

Turkey is more than 90% Muslim.  It used to be a great U.S. ally and a great friend of Israel.  Not anymore.

Under Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, Turkey became a superhighway over which men and materiel moved to ISIS, and as Jack Kelly pointed out, the Turkish government aided and abetted every inch of the way:

Muhammad Hamzah Khan, 19, planned to fly to Turkey, then cross the border into Syria to join the terrorists of the Islamic State. But the FBI arrested him at O’Hare airport in Chicago Oct. 4.

Ankara “allowed its Syria border to become a two-way ‘jihadist highway,’ ” said Turkish journalist Kadri Gursel. Most of up to 12,000 foreign fighters got to the Islamic State via Turkey, where wounded jihadis have received free medical care.

“Turkey’s support was vital for the jihadists in getting in and out of the country,” wrote Orhan Kemal Cengiz in the newspaper Zaman.

“Turkey paved the way for us,” an Islamic State fighter, in Ankara for medical treatment, told the newspaper Aydinlik.

The Turks “provided the bulk of ISIS’ funds, logistics, training and arms,” said Middle East expert Daniel Pipes.

Turkey supported Jabhat al-Nusra (the al-Qaida affiliate President Barack Obama called “the Khorasan Group”), said Francis Ricciardone, our ambassador there until June.

The things that Erdoğan allowed to happen in Turkey and actively supported enabled ISIS to grow in strength and become a global nightmare.  Erdoğan has been in bed with the enemy, and he pretends that he wants to be our friend.  We deserve what we get if we trust him.

Increasingly, thinking people are beginning to question the wisdom of doing business with Erdoğan at all.  I’m excluding Barack Obama, because I don’t believe he’s a thinking person.

Since Erdoğan became prime minister in 2003, things in Turkey have gone downhill fast.  Now that he’s president, there is no telling what he will do to undermine U.S. interests and to further destabilize an already unstable Middle East region.

We know that there is one thing Erdoğan will not do, though.  He won’t use Turkish forces to protect Kurds in Kobani, Syria.  Until Sunday, he wouldn’t allow coalition forces to use Turkish bases to launch strikes against ISIS even though NATO is part of the coalition and Turkey is a member of NATO.  That raises serious questions about where his loyalty lies.

According to Israel National News, “Turkey said Sunday that using Turkey as a corridor to transfer weapons and assistance to Kurdish fighters trying to defend the border city of Kobane from Isis was ‘unrealistic.’ Speaking to French media, [Turkey’s Foreign Minister Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu] said that a ‘more comprehensive’ approach was needed to stop ISIS.”

The “more comprehensive approach” that Çavuşoğlu mentioned amounts to taking out Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.  Although Syria is not our ally, ISIS is our common enemy.  Assad is doing something to help while Turkey is barely in the game even though Kobani is literally at Turkey’s doorstep.  That’s a telling fact.

Kobani is a few hundred yards from the border crossing between Syria and Turkey.  ISIS is engaged in a fierce battle with Kurds in Kobani to take control of the town and establish a base of power there.  Thus, ISIS is potentially a serious threat to Turkish citizens, but Erdoğan has no use for Kurds, especially Kurds in Turkey, and he doesn’t want to help their friends and families in Kobani.

It’s highly likely that ISIS has already used chemical weapons on Kurds in Kobani.  That doesn’t seem to matter to Erdoğan in the slightest.  It’s no wonder that Kurds in Turkey are up in arms about his failure act.  It looks as though he wants the Kurds in Kobani to die.

Friction between Turkish Kurds and the Turkish government has a long and sordid history.  I won’t deal with that here, but I will say this: Erdoğan is very much like Barack Obama in this regard—he bases his decisions on feelings instead of facts.  Maybe that’s one reason why Obama and Erdoğan are bosom buddies.

I think that Erdoğan wants to reestablish the Ottoman Empire with him at the top.  Every move that he made as prime minister supports that belief.  Be that as it may, the problem with allowing feelings to trump facts is that feelings are fleeting and imaginary much of the time.  Facts are stable and real.

As long as Erdoğan has political power, Turkey can’t be relied on as an ally.  That’s a fact.  It’s supported by mountains of hard data.

Jonathan Spyer: MERIA Special Report: Did ISIS Use Chemical Weapons Against the Kurds in Kobani?— *** WARNING:  This post contains images which some readers may find disturbing.  Caution is advised.  Please scroll down to view these images. The fate of Kobani city now hangs in the balance, as around 9000 fighters of the Islamic State organization close in on the Kurdish held area.  The current IS assault on the Kobani enclave was not the first attempt by the jihadis to destroy the Kurdish-controlled area. The Kobani enclave, most of which is now in the hands of the IS, at one time extended to Tel Abyad in the east, and Jarabulus in the west.  It constituted a major hindrance to the desire of the jihadis to maintain free passage for their fighters from Raqqa city up to the Turkish border and westwards towards the front lines in Aleppo province.  IS has therefore long sought to destroy it. Prior to the current campaign, the most serious (but unsuccessful) attempt to conquer Kobani came in July 2014, shortly following the dramatic IS advance into Iraq.

Charles Krauthammer: Bombing for show? Or for effect?— During the 1944 Warsaw uprising, Stalin ordered the advancing Red Army to stop at the outskirts of the city while the Nazis, for 63 days, annihilated the non-Communist Polish partisans. Only then did Stalin take Warsaw. No one can match Stalin for merciless cynicism, but President Recep Tayyip Erdogan of Turkey is offering a determined echo by ordering Turkish tanks massed on the Syrian border, within sight of the besieged Syrian town of Kobane, to sit and do nothing. For almost a month, Kobane Kurds have been trying to hold off Islamic State fighters. Outgunned, outmanned and surrounded on three sides, the defending Kurds have begged Turkey to allow weapons and reinforcements through the border. Erdogan has refused even that, let alone intervening directly. Infuriated Kurds have launched demonstrations throughout Turkey protesting Erdogan’s deadly callousness. At least 21 demonstrators have been killed.

Ephraim Kam: The Rise of the Islamic State: The Strategic Surprise— It was only a matter of time before the debate began about who was responsible for the failed strategic assessment about the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS). Less than a year ago, few people knew about ISIS and the risks it represented. Suddenly, within just a few months, ISIS leads the list of threats of a long line of nations, beginning with the United States, and is considered a threat so severe that exceptional steps must be taken in order to confront it. • The US intelligence community will likely continue to find it difficult to confront ISIS. It will presumably learn from its mistakes and improve its intelligence coverage, but ISIS will remain a tough nut to crack. It is hard to penetrate an ideologically motivated organization like ISIS due to the compartmentalization characteristic of such a sealed outfit. It melts in with the population, making it difficult to identify operatives, and leaves a very low signature and few discernible targets.

Alon Ben-Meir: America and Its Allies Must Unleash Full Fury on ISIS— The gruesome and tragic beheadings of innocent U.S. and U.K. citizens is excruciatingly painful, especially for the families of the victims. Other than making supreme efforts to free current prisoners held by ISIS by any means available, no compromises can ever be made with this extremist group. The nature of ISIS’ menace necessitates an inexorable, merciless, and overwhelming military campaign to eliminate every trace of this horrid movement in and outside the theater of war. As long as ISIS exists, it will continue to behead innocent people and summarily execute thousands of others. They glorify death, because they see martyrdom as a fulfillment of God’s sacred mission to which they have been assigned. ISIS is a movement driven by religious fanaticism that rejects any other brand of Islam and defies any limits or constraints to achieve their perverse objective to establish a Caliphate encompassing Iraq, Syria, Jordan, Israel, the West Bank, Gaza, and Kuwait.

David Rubin: America praises and supports terrorist government— The post-Gaza war period has seen some disturbing statements and actions by the United States political leadership that call into serious question its reliability, as the leader of the free world and as a trusted ally of Israel. The American air attacks on the Islamic State (otherwise known as ISIS, ISIL or IS) savages in support of the relatively pro-Western Kurds and other minorities in Iraq are positive, if somewhat insufficient, and are continuing, but contradictory and conspicuous lack of action against ISIS has been revealed in Syria. On that front, the Americans have been reluctant to offend President Obama’s close confidant Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan of Turkey, whose repressive anti-Kurd (not to mention anti-Israel) policies are well-known.

Christine Williams: U.S., Canada Team Up with Islamists— A handbook entitled United Against Terrorism, supposedly aimed at preventing youth radicalization, was endorsed last week by the U.S. Department of State, according to a report by Andrew McCarthy inNational Review Online. The handbook, however, released at a mosque in Winnipeg (Manitoba), Canada, is an alarming joint venture between the Royal Canadian Mounted Police [RCMP] and the National Council of Canadian Muslims [NCCM], formerly CAIR-CAN — now conveniently renamed — which has connections to terrorism. CAIR-CAN is the Canadian branch of CAIR [Council on American–Islamic Relations], which was designated an “unindicted co-conspirator” in the largest terrorist financing trial in U.S. history — the Holy Land Foundation trial. The handbook has already caused dissension among the RCMP, which now is backing away from it, due to its “adversarial tone” — and also possibly the embarrassing fallout.

Mark A. Kellner: Why believing Christians are observing their versions of Jewish holidays this month—Relatively few Christian groups today observe the Torah’s festivals. Starting with the conversion of the Roman Emperor Constantine to the then-new Christian faith, holy days such as Easter and Christmas emerged as central elements of the Christian calendar, which coincided, some historians said, with pagan feast days already observed in the Roman world. What elements of Jewish worship, if any, the Christian church should retain has been a subject of debate from the faith’s earliest days. The gospel accounts portray Jesus as an observant Jew who observed the Feast of Tabernacles (John 7:2-11), but Paul later instructed believers at Rome to “(l)et every man be fully persuaded in his own mind” on the holy day question.

Mona Charen: Let’s Repeal Reality— Katherine Timpf is young, beautiful and very sane. Oh, have I said something wrong? Good. Writing for National Review, Timpf covers the complete flight from reality that characterizes today’s progressivism/feminism. A quick glance at her recent titles gives the flavor of the world they seek to create and impose. “Feminists: Remove World War II Sailor Statue Because It’s ‘Sexual Assault’ ” (that would be the iconic image from Times Square on VJ Day in 1945). “Feds Spending Money To Find Out Why Obese Girls Get Fewer Dates.” “Feminists: Slow Motion Is Sexist.” And today’s installment: “Schools Told to Call Kids ‘Purple Penguins’ Because ‘Boys and Girls’ Is Not Inclusive to Transgender.” It’s not just one school. The guidelines were given to all teachers in the Lincoln, Neb., school district, and if you happen upon any college campus, you’ll quickly discover that our institutions of higher learning are in the business of denying basic biology: It’s now unacceptable to refer to just two genders. There’s “he,” “she” and “xe,” among others.

Michelle Malkin: Look Who’s Data Mining Your Toddlers— Attention, parents: Have your little ones been subjected to “TS Gold” in school yet? If you care about student privacy, data mining and classroom intrusions, you might want to start asking questions and protecting your children now before it’s too late. What’s happening here in Colorado with this onerous testing regime is happening everywhere. Informed families and teachers from all parts of the political spectrum agree: It’s a Big Government/Big Business “gold” rush you don’t want to join.

Judith Curry: The Global Warming Statistical Meltdown— At the recent United Nations Climate Summit, Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon warned that “Without significant cuts in emissions by all countries, and in key sectors, the window of opportunity to stay within less than 2 degrees [of warming] will soon close forever.” Actually, this window of opportunity may remain open for quite some time. A growing body of evidence suggests that the climate is less sensitive to increases in carbon-dioxide emissions than policy makers generally assume—and that the need for reductions in such emissions is less urgent. According to the U.N. Framework Convention on Climate Change, preventing “dangerous human interference” with the climate is defined, rather arbitrarily, as limiting warming to no more than 2 degrees Celsius (3.6 degrees Fahrenheit) above preindustrial temperatures. The Earth’s surface temperatures have already warmed about 0.8 degrees Celsius since 1850-1900. This leaves 1.2 degrees Celsius (about 2.2 degrees Fahrenheit) to go.

4--Scripture of the Day Yahweh

Genesis 34: 1-7

1 Now Dinah the daughter of Leah, whom she had borne to Jacob, went out to visit the daughters of the land. 2 When Shechem the son of Hamor the Hivite, the prince of the land, saw her, he took her and lay with her by force. 3 He was deeply attracted to Dinah the daughter of Jacob, and he loved the girl and spoke tenderly to her. 4 So Shechem spoke to his father Hamor, saying, “Get me this young girl for a wife.” 5 Now Jacob heard that he had defiled Dinah his daughter; but his sons were with his livestock in the field, so Jacob kept silent until they came in. 6 Then Hamor the father of Shechem went out to Jacob to speak with him. 7 Now the sons of Jacob came in from the field when they heard it; and the men were grieved, and they were very angry because he had done a disgraceful thing in Israel by lying with Jacob’s daughter, for such a thing ought not to be done.

14--Blessings from Revelation 2

Blessings in the Book of Revelation is a book that you need to read, especially now.  There are blessings throughout the Scriptures but Revelation is the only book in the Bible actually containing a specific blessing for reading it. It’s repeated twice, once at the beginning and again at the end. This is the reason that I believe Revelation should be the first step toward studying biblical prophecy. Though not easy to do, Revelation can be broken down and understood by anyone, not just the academic elite. So, Revelation’s blessings are for everyone.  Click here to order the eBook.  Click here to order the paperback.
