Stop Giving Money to the U.N.
Alexander Joffe and Asaf Romirowsky believe that we should stop giving money to the UN’s Relief Agency for Palestinians:
When Hamas fires its last rocket and Israel drops its last bomb, the extent of Gaza’s devastation will become clear. An early estimate is that some $5 billion will be necessary to rebuild residences and infrastructure destroyed in the recent conflict. The first step is to take United Nations Relief and Works Agency out of the equation.
UNRWA, the U.N.’s 65-year-old, internationally funded welfare organization for Palestinians, should be commended for providing much needed shelter and aid to displaced Gazans during the crisis. But given several revelations during the current conflict between Hamas and Israel, UNRWA should have no role in any negotiated arrangement regarding Gaza’s reconstruction.
On three occasions rockets were found in UNRWA schools, closed for the summer, and at least once they were returned to Hamas. On another occasion, the UNRWA accused Israel of targeting civilians sheltering in a school when in fact those deaths were caused by a Hamas rocket that fell short. And on another occasion it accused Israel of targeting a shelter and civilians when in reality terrorists outside the facility were hit and civilian bodies possibly planted at the scene.
I agree that UNRWA should play no part in Gaza’s reconstruction, but that is not enough. The UN should play no role, either. It has become a cesspool where Islamists gather to attack Jewish people and Israel with impunity under a cloak of legitimacy. We cannot allow that to continue.
The problem stems from the fact that each UN member nation, and I use the word “nation” with hesitation, has a voice in the UN General Assembly. Many if not most of them aren’t really “nations” as we think of nations. They are representatives of the latest warlords to take control of territories and impose their will on people who are little more than slaves. There are lots of them, and many of them are Islamists or they have Islamist leanings. Together, they represent the majority in the UN General Assembly. That’s why UN resolutions condemning Israel for anything under the sun can be introduced and passed in the UN General Assembly in a matter of minutes.
The UN Security Council prevents a lot of mischief because a unanimous Security Council vote is required for General Assembly resolutions to take effect, but merely passing General Assembly resolutions creates serious problems. Most people who read about the UN in newspapers or hear reports about UN actions have no idea what is actually taking place. They believe that those resolutions mean something the moment they are passed and that Security Council vetoes are just a way to protect Israel from “the will of the world”. It’s a public relations game at which Islamists have become experts, and the mainstream media with its anti-Israel bias plays right along.
As things stand now, the whole concept of a governing body representing the world at large is fatally flawed. The UN isn’t working, and it has never worked the way that it should. Pretending that it is working and pouring our hard-earned tax dollars into it helps to perpetuate the myth that the UN is a benevolent and representative body—something that the UN clearly is not.

IPT News: Hamas Official Admits His Group Murdered Three Israeli Boys— A senior Hamas official acknowledged that the terrorist organization was behind the June kidnapping and murder of three Israeli students, the Jerusalem Post reports. Salah al-Aruri, a senior Hamas official, praised the “heroic action of the Kassam Brigades who kidnapped three settlers in Hebron,” at a conference of Islamic clerics in Turkey on Wednesday. Israel immediately blamed Hamas after the initial abduction, while the terrorist organization denied involvement. This is the terrorist organization’s first public admission of the attack. Hussam Qawasme was detained by Israeli authorities in July and is accused of orchestrating the kidnapping and killing of Yeshiva students Eyal Yifrach, Naftali Frenkel and Gilad Shaar. Marwan Qawasme and Amer Abu Aysaha, who allegedly carried out the attack, remain at large. According to the Shin Bet, Israel’s domestic intelligence agency, Hussam Qawasme allegedly ordered the attack following approval by Hamas’ military wing. He reportedly admitted to his participation and revealed that he received money from Gaza for the attack.
Khaled Abu Toameh: Bringing Abbas Back to Gaza Not a Good Idea— Those who believe that the reinstatement of the Palestinian Authority [PA] in the Gaza Strip would destroy or undermine Hamas and end rocket attacks on Israel are living under an illusion. The talk about restoring PA control over the Gaza Strip was first raised during the indirect cease-fire talks between Israel and Hamas in Cairo. The Egyptians made clear during the talks that they would like to see PA President Mahmoud Abbas and his forces reassume control over the Gaza Strip. One proposal called for deploying security officers belonging to Abbas’s “Presidential Guard” along the border between the Gaza Strip and Egypt. The Egyptian proposal has won the backing of the U.S. Administration, many European governments and some Arab countries, including Jordan, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates. Abbas, who lost the Gaza Strip to Hamas in the summer of 2007, has thus far refrained from publicly commenting on these reports.
David Horovitz: Hamas Cannot Be Easily Deterred—As rocket fire on Tuesday marked the latest in a string of Hamas truce violations, the notion that some kind of lasting arrangement was soon to emerge from the indirect negotiations in Cairo was again rudely shattered. Netanyahu is not about to approve a deal that gives Hamas any remotely significant diplomatic reward for firing 3,500 rockets at Israel and building an elaborate cross-border attack tunnel network. Hamas lost dozens of its tunnels, and perhaps 1,000 of its gunmen, and pleaded for a cease-fire, apparently believing it could negotiate a diplomatic resolution more satisfactory than the military face-off had yielded. But most of its elite fighters are still alive, and it still has thousands of rockets, and is capable of manufacturing more in mid-conflict. Hamas is not seeking freedom for the people of Gaza when it demands the “lifting of the siege,” a seaport and an airport. Rather, it is seeking the capacity to further its goal of wiping out Israel by getting all the restrictions lifted on its capacity to build a still nastier war machine. But only if Hamas believes its survival is in danger will it call a long-term halt to the fire. And that would require a far more significant military operation.
Shoshana Bryen: The Beheading of James Foley and Other Unintended Consequences— There is a reason the American military asks of its civilian commanders, “Don’t tell us what to do, tell us what you want done.” Giving the military an executable military mission to accomplish is the most important responsibility of civilian command. A strategic plan helps the military respond quickly to the unintended consequences that result from every mission, without sliding into incremental and often unplanned escalation. President Obama has dispatched up to 800 American soldiers and authorized more than 90 air strikes with a general idea of our “humanitarian” responsibilities, not our strategic interests. (That did not work too well in Libya.) Mr. Obama even characterized as “humanitarian” U.S. air support for Kurdish peshmerga and Iraqi troops to prevent ISIS from controlling the Mosul Dam.
Washington Post Editorial: The Islamic State’s Campaign of Terror Will Take More than Words to Stop—With each day, the barbarism of the Islamist extremists terrorizing Syria and Iraq becomes more evident – as does the need for the U.S. and its allies to act more vigorously to block their rise. Islamist extremists in Syria and Iraq are training hundreds of foreign terrorists, including from Europe and the U.S., who could easily slip back into their home countries with malign intent. They proudly proclaim their enmity to America. America needs a genuine strategy in response.
Gen. John Allen (ret.): Destroy the Islamic State Now—If all the actions of the Islamic State, or IS, to date weren’t sufficiently reprehensible, the brutal murder of the brave American journalist James Foley and the potential for other similar acts will snap American attention with laser-like focus onto the real danger IS poses to the existence of Iraq, the order of the region and to the homelands of Europe and America. Make no mistake, the abomination of IS is a clear and present danger to the U.S. The U.S. is now firmly in the game and remains the only nation on the planet capable of exerting the kind of strategic leadership, influence and strike capacity to deal with IS. The Islamic State is an entity beyond the pale of humanity and it must be eradicated. If we delay now, we will pay later.
Gallia Lindenstrauss: Turkey after the Presidential Election:A Difficult Challenge for Israel’s Foreign Policy— Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s victory in the first round of the presidential election (with 52 percent of the vote) signals the continuing dominance of the Justice and Development Party (AKP) in Turkish politics. Erdogan has controlled Turkey for more than a decade, and is now planning on remaining in office for two presidential terms. During the election campaign, which overlapped with Operation Protective Edge, Erdogan devoted a great deal of attention to the situation in the Gaza Strip, voicing much harsh criticism of Israel. Erdogan also said that as long as he is in power, no improvement in relations between the two countries could be expected. His success in being elected president in the first round for a five-year term gives rise to the concern that if he makes good on this promise, no improvement in Turkey-Israel relations can be expected in the foreseeable future.

But these are only the most recent examples of anti-Jewish media bias, which has unfortunately occurred throughout history. Human Rights Watch: Not Welcome: Jordan’s Treatment of Palestinians Escaping Syria— The 46-page report is based on interviews with more than 30 people affected by the non-admission policy. Human Rights Watch also documented Jordan’s withdrawal of Jordanian citizenship from some Palestinians who had lived in Syria for many years and who have been detained or deported to Syria without identity documents. Jordan’s uncompromising treatment of Palestinians fleeing Syria contrasts with its treatment of Syrian nationals, at least 607,000 of whom have been accepted into the country since the beginning of the Syrian conflict Before the March 2011 uprising began, Syria was home to at least 520,000 Palestinian refugees.
SnyderTalk Comment: Jordan’s treatment of Palestinians may sound harsh, but in reality, it’s merely a way to protect Jordanian citizens and the monarchy. Jordan has a long history of dealing with Palestinians, and they know from experience what it means to allow militant Palestinians to take up residence in the Hashemite Kingdom. From King Abdullah’s perspective, it’s a matter of survival—something that he learned from his father King Hussein.

After Journalist’s Beheading, Obama Calls for “Common Effort to Extract This Cancer”
SnyderTalk Comment: The key word is “after”. It took a tragedy to get Obama to do what any thinking president would have done before the horrific act. I realize that the president let it be known that the U.S. tried to rescue the hostages and failed, but that’s not good enough. Jimmy Carter tried to extricate the Iranian hostages and he failed, too. It was a sign of his ineptness. In Obama’s case, merely announcing what should have remained a secret was inept, and not following up until victory was achieved was another example of his ineptness.
Obama allowed the release of top secret information because he knows that the American people are beginning to wake up to him. It’s evident in the polling data that keeps getting worse for him every day. He’s playing a PR game with top secret information because only he can do it with impunity.
I have a strong hunch that the president’s gambit won’t work. Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me. It’s hard to reverse a rising tide, and Americans are finally opening their eyes to reality. Those homey stump speeches that the president delivers so well can’t obscure his incompetence. He looks like exactly what he is.
