Obama Pledges “Relentless” Fight Against ISIS—Why Doesn’t Israel Have the Same Right?
By now, everyone should know that ISIS terrorists beheaded James Foley: see “Islamic State Beheads American, Threatens Second American”. He was a photojournalist from Rochester, N.H. He was captured in 2012 while working in Syria for Agence France Presse. His murderer threatened to behead another captured journalist if the U.S. strikes ISIS again.
It’s time for the U.S. to take a stand against Islamist extremism just like Israel took a stand against Hamas in Gaza, and I repeat just like Israel took a stand against Hamas in Gaza. The longer we wait, the harder it will be to eradicate the problem. That is true of Israel in its fight against Hamas terrorists, too. The longer they wait to finish the job, the harder it will be to complete the task.
Step one for the U.S. should be to positively identify the person responsible for beheading Foley, locate him, and then send him to Allah where he belongs. Step two should be to identify every person in his family, his social network, and his acquaintance network. A careful investigation of them should reveal some interesting linkages. Step three should be to follow those linkages wherever they lead. Throughout the process, arrests should be made if evidence of complicity is uncovered. Swift punishment should follow if anyone is found guilty.
President Obama has vowed a relentless fight against ISIS: see “US intel confirms journalist execution video ‘authentic,’ Obama vows ‘relentless’ fight against ISIS”. That’s the right idea, but we’ll have to wait and see if he is serious or if he is just blowing smoke—an all too frequent Obama tactic. Next, he needs to explain why Israel doesn’t have the right to relentlessly fight against Hamas and any other Islamist group that threatens its citizens. Obama is applying a double standard if he thinks that he has the right and that Israel doesn’t.
How much longer do you think we have before Islamist maniacs, some of them citizens of the United States, start killing more people in the U.S.? If you think that you can rest easy because it will not happen for a long time, you are taking a big and unnecessary risk. Do you really think that’s smart? I don’t. Does Fort Hood ring a bell? What about Major Nidal Hasan? How about 9/11?
When the people of the United States take a stand, the president will respond because he won’t have a choice. Speak up and do it often. Let your voice be heard loudly. If this president doesn’t represent your views, tell the world about it. Start by telling people in your family and move out from there.
Keep in mind that President Obama set the stage for what is taking place in the Middle East today. It started when he launched his apology tour in Cairo shortly after he took office. It continued when he failed to take appropriate action against Islamist terrorists in Benghazi. It got even worse when he conspired with Hillary Clinton and Susan Rice to commit fraud by telling the American people and the world that an obscure filmmaker was responsible for the Benghazi attack that cost innocent American lives.
That was a criminal act, and it should be investigated as a crime. Presidents and their appointees can’t commit criminal acts with impunity unless we allow it. So let’s not allow it. There must be someone in law enforcement with enough courage to do the job. Don’t wait on Congress to act. Take the initiative and do it yourself. The crime was committed in Washington, D.C. Start there.
The list of Obama’s blunders is too long so show here, but this much is certain: we are beginning to pay a hefty price for his mistakes. It’s time for us, we the people of the United States, to do the job that only we can do. Thankfully, the United States Constitution guarantees our right to challenge a sitting president and any other political officeholder. Don’t take your constitutional rights for granted.
As pleased as I am that Obama has vowed to take decisive action now that an American has been butchered, I can’t forget that he created this mess and that he has been asleep at the helm of state while the problem festered. He has even gone so far as to integrate terrorists into his administration. Saying you will fight after you have been attacked is not what I expect from my president. I believe he should have acted decisively before innocent lives were taken. That’s what Israel has finally concluded as well.
One last point, if you haven’t already purchased guns and ammunition to defend your family, now would be a good time to do it. If serious violence breaks out in the United States, they will be hard to find at reasonable prices. As I tell my friends, it’s better to have them and not need them than to need them and not have them.

Victor Sharpe: To Cross the Rubicon— There is a time in a nation’s history when a decision of immense and fundamental importance must be made. Such a decision means embarking on a new direction that alters everything that has gone before. It is a veritable crossing of the Rubicon. That decision now confronts embattled Israel. A great alliance exists between two peoples who share principles of democracy, the rule of law, freedom of religion and speech, and human rights. That alliance and friendship between the American and Israeli people largely remains, exemplified by the support of Congress, despite the policies of the current administration. Like the United States, Israel respects the rights of minorities. It has an independent judicial system, which protects the rights of individuals and operates under the principle of “innocent until proven guilty.” Israel, like America, features regularly scheduled elections that are free and fair and open to all its citizens, regardless of religion, race, or sex. What a contrast exists between it and the grim horrors and butchery endemic among the failed Islamic states that surround it.
Gilead Sher and Einav Yogev: Image vs. Reality:The Delegitimization of Israel in the Wake of Operation Protective Edge— Operation Protective Edge is the third large scale operation that Israel has undertaken since the disengagement from Gaza in 2005 in an effort to strengthen deterrence and restore quiet to the communities in southern Israel and the cities to their north. The images fixed in the minds of millions around the world are the difficult pictures from the fighting in Gaza – in the vast majority of cases, a result of harsh and biased coverage. While in the short run relative peace and quiet may be obtained, in the long run, for every such round of fighting, Israel pays a much heavier price in public opinion and in erosion of support for its positions in the negotiations with the Palestinians. Consequently, this is not merely a problem of public relations. The struggle is not over Israel’s image alone, but over the very essence of the Israeli narrative, and hence, Israel’s future and security as well.
George Igler: Anti-Semitism in Britain: “Sit Up and Take Notice”— A striking feature of the rising tide of anti-Semitism in Britain is the silence with which the country’s leaders are choosing to respond to a growing climate of hatred and intimidation, directed not only at Jews themselves, but increasingly anything remotely Jewish. According to a report published in July by the Community Security Trust, a charity established to ensure the safety of the Jewish community in 1994, even though four out of every five anti-Semitic attacks usually take place “in the main Jewish centers of Greater London and Greater Manchester,” violent assaults against Jews and symbols of Judaism are also now taking place nationwide.
Richard Cohen: Israel Is Held to an Impossible Standard—Americans massacred as many as 500 unarmed Vietnamese civilians at My Lai in 1968. Americans have killed children while attempting to kill their fathers and made all sorts of mistakes in wartime, but none of this changed the nature of the society. We ought to be measured by our intent, not by what went astray. The same holds for Israel. It is not a child-murdering community, although Syria, next door, most certainly is.
Mati Tuchfeld, Daniel Siryoti, Boaz Bismuth and Israel Hayom Staff: ‘Israel won’t compromise on security needs’—The prime minister said Israel had delivered a devastating military blow to Hamas during Operation Protective Edge. He said Hamas would be wrong if it thought it could translate its military defeat into a diplomatic achievement. “As long as quiet is not returned, Hamas will continue to take tough blows,” Netanyahu said. “We are a strong people, and we are determined,” Netanyahu said. “We will continue to stand steadfast and united until we achieve the goal of the campaign — to return quiet and security to all the citizens of Israel.”
Zvi Mazel: Hamas Seeks an Islamic Caliphate, Not an Independent Palestinian State—As an Islamic jihadi caliphate is strengthening its hold in the heart of the Middle East, the West seems intent on venting its frustrations on Israel, which is defending itself against Hamas, another radical Islamist group. Hamas was founded by Sheikh Ahmed Yassin, a member of the Muslim Brotherhood, with the express purpose of destroying Israel and establishing an Islamic state on the ruins of the Jewish state. Unfortunately, the West has yet to realize that Hamas is using the Palestinian problem and spouting fake nationalistic slogans in order to further its aims. Yet Hamas does not speak of creating an independent Palestinian state. Instead it says it is fighting “occupation,” a word encompassing Tel Aviv and the whole of Israel. Egypt is the last rampart of the Arab world against the barbaric Islamic state taking shape, as Iraq and Syria are in disarray. The writer is a former Israeli Ambassador to Egypt.
Trevor Norwitz: Has the West Made the next Gaza War Inevitable— UN Secretary-General Ban Ki Moon is right to say that, “children killed in their sleep … is an affront to all of us, a source of universal shame.” No-one can be unmoved by the pictures out of Gaza: the loss of life, the carnage, the anguish and fear in the faces of women and children. It is heart breaking. But he is wrong to blame Israel, especially in such injudicious terms. He, and many others in positions of power and influence, do a terrible disservice to humanity, to the cause of international peace and security, and to the Palestinian people (not to mention the Israeli people), by not stating unequivocally what they know to be the truth: that overwhelming responsibility for the mayhem in Gaza rests with Hamas (a part of the Palestinian national unity government).
Andrew Percy: What My Visit to Israel Taught Me about the War in Gaza—You’re facing an enemy whose founding principle is the total destruction not only of your country but your entire people. It uses civilian locations to fire thousands of rockets at your country. This enemy also digs tunnels into your country so it can murder your people en masse and it describes large civilian deaths on its own side as an “effective strategy.” I’ve just returned from Israel where I’ve spent time responding to sirens, running to bomb shelters and watching Hamas rockets deliberately aimed at civilians being shot out of the sky by Israel’s Iron Dome missile defense system. In my talks with Israelis almost every conversation started with the question: “What would you do?” Balance in this debate seems to have been lost. A terrorist network has been made to look like the victim with some asking incredibly why Hamas isn’t allowed a missile defense shield! While Jewish people get attacked in the streets of Western Europe for simply being Jewish, Hamas terrorists are relieved of the responsibility for the plight of their own people.
Louis René Beres: The Gaza War: Appearance vs. Reality— Now that the dust has begun to settle in Gaza after Israel’s Operation Protective Edge, it is again easy to feel sorry for the beleaguered Palestinians. As everyone knows who looks at The New York Times and CNN, the lingering images are incontestably painful, and continue to look “asymmetrical” and “disproportionate.” How could Hamas have been the aggressor when so many more Arabs than Israelis were killed? Surely the side with greater civilian losses must always be in the right. How could it be otherwise? The people of Gaza (together with those many Israelis still forced to live under terrorist rocket attacks) are indeed victims of regional violence. But their victimization was not caused by any outside enemy. On the contrary, Palestinian suffering remains the direct result of a criminal Hamas leadership. Why is Hamas putting its weapons in the middle of homes, schools, hospitals and mosques in the first place?
Kobi Michael and Udi Dekel: Essential Conditions for Successful Reconstruction of the Gaza Strip— The economic reality in the Gaza Strip, which was in a state of crisis long before Operation Protective Edge, has deteriorated even further. Israel has an interest in working for the rapid reconstruction of the Gaza Strip, even though the image of an unrealized military achievement discourages Israel from enlisting in the reconstruction process, which will be seen as a strategic achievement for Hamas. Basic reconstruction of the Gaza Strip is likewise a vital element for the Palestinian state building process, and is an important lever for strengthening the Palestinian Authority and renewing the peace process. At the same time, it is also a fundamental test of the PA’s willingness, resolve, and executive ability. Problematic or inadequate performance by the PA in the Gaza Strip would be a warning as to the functional capabilities of the PA in state governance in the West Bank once an agreement is signed.
