Conor Friedersdorf—How Police Spied On A Whole City:

This is the future if nothing is done to stop it.

In a secret test of mass surveillance technology, the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department sent a civilian aircraft over Compton, California, capturing high-resolution video of everything that happened inside that 10-square-mile municipality.

Compton residents weren’t told about the spying, which happened in 2012. “We literally watched all of Compton during the times that we were flying, so we could zoom in anywhere within the city of Compton and follow cars and see people,” Ross McNutt of Persistence Surveillance Systems told the Center for Investigative Reporting, which unearthed and did the first reporting on this important story. The technology he’s trying to sell to police departments all over America can stay aloft for up to six hours. Like Google Earth, it enables police to zoom in on certain areas. And like TiVo, it permits them to rewind, so that they can look back and see what happened anywhere they weren’t watching in real time.

If it’s adopted, Americans can be policed like Iraqis and Afghanis under occupation–and at bargain prices.

Khaled Abu Toameh: Palestinians: Our Blood Is More Precious Than Jewish Blood— “We reject all forms of violence… Palestinian blood is like Israeli blood. It is human blood and precious and no one wants anyone killed.” — Mahmoud al-Habbash, Palestinian Minister of Religious Affairs. “If your blood is like the blood of Zionists, our blood is not.” — Zakariya Zubeidi, former leader of the Al-Aqsa Martyrs’ Brigade. “We call for lifting his [al-Habbash’s] diplomatic immunity and for prosecuting him immediately for his administrative, financial, and political corruption. We also call on President Abbas to fire him immediately from the Palestinian cabinet.” — Mansour al-Sa’di, Fatah leader. The angry reactions show that there are many Palestinians who see no problem with a terrorist attack against a Jewish family. Palestinian leaders can blame only themselves.

Avi Issacharoff: Dismantle the Palestinian Authority? Not Likely—At least three Palestinian threats have become a recurrent ritual, repeating themselves every few months: 1) the resignation of Mahmoud Abbas from the presidency of the Palestinian Authority; 2) the resignation of top Palestinian negotiator Saeb Erekat; and 3) the dissolution of the PA. The probability that the PA will be dissolved is very low. The discussion in recent days has been mainly in the Israeli media, with little to no discourse in the Palestinian media. Abbas understands that dismantling the PA would lead to countless acts of violence, not only against Israel but also within Palestinian society. For Abbas, dissolving the PA security apparatus would increase Hamas’ power and severely imperil every PA and Fatah official. Another important consideration is the future of the 150,000 PA workers and Fatah members, in the West Bank and in Gaza, who receive salaries each month.

Paula R. Stern: What Happened in Kansas City Can Happen in Brooklyn— Hours before the Passover holiday began, Kansas City faced a tragedy – and a challenge. A sick, demented, hate-filled, ignorant man named Frazier Glenn Miller opened fire at two Jewish centers and murdered three people. The incredible irony, of course, is that in attempting to murder Jews, he ended up murdering 3 Christians, including an elderly woman and a teenage boy.

Rabbi Avraham Krieger: Anti-Semitism’s new masks— The U.S. administration should not have been surprised by the heinous actions of Frazier Glenn Miller, Jr., who murdered three people in Kansas City in cold blood, just because he thought they were Jewish. Miller had never hidden his anti-Semitic views, nor was he ever shy about expressing his opinions, which advocated harming Jews. Miller was a proud, card-carrying member of the white supremacist group Ku Klux Klan, and as such he had incited to the murder of Jews his entire life. To remove any doubt as to his intentions, Miller committed his thoughts to paper in his book “A White Man Speaks Out”; he headed a white supremacy group in his hometown, gave interviews to known anti-Semitic media outlets and — absurdly — was a write-in candidate for the U.S. Senate in the 2010 general election. Needless to say, he never refrained from inciting anti-Semitism and xenophobia.

Raymond Ibrahim: How Modernity ‘Radicalizes’ Western Muslims— A new Danish statistical study finds that “Muslims [are] 218 percent more criminal in second generation than first.”  While some of these crimes are clearly related to Islam—such as attacks on Muslim apostates to Christianity—others, such as rampant theft of non-Muslims, would appear banal, until one realizes that even robbery and plunder is justified by Islamic doctrine—as one UK Muslim cleric once clearly said. The interesting question here is why are second generation Muslims, who are presumably more Westernized than their Muslim parents, also more “radical”?  Lest one dismiss this phenomenon as a product of economics or some other “grievance” against European host nations, the fact is, even in America, where Muslims are much better assimilated than in Europe, they too are turning to “radicalism.”

Nadav Shragai: Ban Muslims from Temple Mount, too— It happened in 1988 on the Temple Mount. It started when a gang of Muslims captured an Israeli policeman — an officer in the “Yamam” counterterrorism unit. By the time he was rescued by his comrades, he had been beaten and bloodied. His weapon, however, remained with his captors. With the firearm in hand, thousands of Muslims barricaded themselves in Al-Aqsa mosque. Police began closing in on the mosque, but resisted breaching its walls, as was common in those days. Eventually, a compromise was reached and a team of officers approached the mosque gates. The besieged group inside cracked open the doors and the gun, according to an agreement reached earlier, was “concealed” beside it. Police “discovered” it. Israeli “honor,” as well as the gun, were restored to their rightful places. The masses made their egress from the mosque.

Tony Dokoupil: A Tale Of Two Chicagos—After church and Easter dinner with relatives, 11-year-old Tymisha Washington wanted to play before the street lights came on. She joined four friends—none more than 15 years old—at a park near her house on Chicago’s South Side. Then a dark car pulled up to the group, and a passenger asked the kids about their gang affiliation. They have none, their parents told police, but the questioner opened fire anyhow, sending a bullet into Washington’s chin and another into her lung. For more than a year now, the Chicago Police department has been on a triumphant run. Murders fell almost 20 percent citywide last year, according to department data, and the first quarter of 2014 saw the fewest murders in any first quarter since 1958. But then the mercury started to rise.

Dara Lind: These Countries Have A Tenth Of The World’s People — And Almost Half Its Homicides—Think of it as a new kind of global inequality. The United Nations warns there’s a widening gap between countries with extremely high homicide rates and countries with low ones. According to a recent UN Office of Drugs and Crime report, 25 countries have rates of at least 20 homicides per 100,000 people. That’s way more violent than the United States — our homicide rate is a mere 4.7 per 100,000 people. It’s even more violent than some combat zones. Iraq, for example, had a violent death rate of 18 per 100,000 people in 2012, including both homicides and civilian deaths in combat.

Damien McElroy: Syria: Assad Launching Chemical Weapons Attacks with Chlorine—The Assad regime has reverted to the use of lethal chlorine gas, first used in World War I, in a series of recent attacks, Western officials believe. Francois Hollande, the French president,on Sunday declared the Syrian leader had continued to use chemical weapons. While the Syrian regime has handed over 80% of its declared chemical weapons stockpile for destruction under UN supervision, officials are examining attacks on at least three towns in the last week where credible reports point to the use of chlorine gas, leaving dozens of people seeking treatment.

Silvio Canto, Jr.: Be careful what you wish for……you may get a president that you don’t respect!— According to most polls, the country is happy that we got out of Iraq, phased out our presence in Afghanistan, stayed out of Syria & Ukraine. However, the country is getting what they wanted but no one is happy with it, as Fred Hiatt wrote a few days ago: “Robert Kagan recently wrote on this page that, foreign policy decision by foreign policy decision, President Obama has given Americans what they say they want. But the result hasn’t made them proud of America or of their president. The same phenomenon may explain the disappointment in Obama’s domestic record.”

4--Scripture of the Day Yahweh

Genesis 3: 1-7

1 Now the serpent was more crafty than any beast of the field which Yahweh Elohim had made. And he said to the woman, “Indeed, has God said, ‘You shall not eat from any tree of the garden’?” 2 The woman said to the serpent, “From the fruit of the trees of the garden we may eat; 3 but from the fruit of the tree which is in the middle of the garden, God has said, ‘You shall not eat from it or touch it, or you will die.’” 4 The serpent said to the woman, “You surely will not die! 5 For God knows that in the day you eat from it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.” 6 When the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was a delight to the eyes, and that the tree was desirable to make one wise, she took from its fruit and ate; and she gave also to her husband with her, and he ate. 7 Then the eyes of both of them were opened, and they knew that they were naked; and they sewed fig leaves together and made themselves loin coverings.

14--Blessings from Revelation 2

Blessings in the Book of Revelation is a book that you need to read, especially now.  There are blessings throughout the Scriptures but Revelation is the only book in the Bible actually containing a specific blessing for reading it. It’s repeated twice, once at the beginning and again at the end. This is the reason that I believe Revelation should be the first step toward studying biblical prophecy. Though not easy to do, Revelation can be broken down and understood by anyone, not just the academic elite. So, Revelation’s blessings are for everyone.  Click here to order the eBook.  Click here to order the paperback.
