Misreading the New Testament—John Chapter 8
Most Christians today do not understand what the New Testament is, and even worse, many of them have abandoned the Old Testament altogether. It’s as though they see it as an archaic relic, a reminder of things that are interesting as curios but not important.
The Messiah didn’t see it that way. In fact, He revered the Old Testament (Jewish people call it the Tanach), and said that nothing in it is off base in any way whatsoever. He said, “For truly I say to you, until heaven and earth pass away, not the smallest letter or stroke shall pass from the Law until all is accomplished.” (Matthew 5: 18) Since heaven and earth haven’t passed away yet, that means the Law is still in effect.
Despite the Messiah’s crystal clear statement, you see evidence of our abandonment of the Old Testament every day. From legitimizing homosexuality to abortion on demand without constraints, our society has turned its back on Yahweh and His word, and He made it clear from the very beginning that rejecting His word is rejecting Him. Don’t let anyone fool you because that’s exactly what we have done, and there are consequences.
The New Testament is loaded with admonitions about obeying Yahweh and the result of not obeying Him. Take John 3: 16, for instance: “For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish, but have eternal life.” That’s probably the most quoted verse in the New Testament. People who can’t tell you anything else about the Bible can recite that verse, but just a few verses down is another verse that they conveniently ignore. It’s John 3: 36: “He who believes in the Son has eternal life; but he who does not obey the Son will not see life, but the wrath of God abides on him.”
It’s obvious that obedience is important, and no amount of sermonizing can change that reality. It’s true that we are saved by grace through faith because no one, and I mean no one, deserves salvation. But what kind of faith? Saving faith is faith that manifests itself in a desire to obey Yahweh.
Additionally, far too many Christians don’t know who the Messiah is, and they don’t have a clue what His Name is. In this article, I will parse John chapter 8 to demonstrate what the Bible actually says about the Old Testament and the true identity of the Messiah. John chapter 8 begins on the Mount of Olives and moves quickly to the Temple Mount:
1 But Jesus went to the Mount of Olives. 2 Early in the morning He came again into the temple, and all the people were coming to Him; and He sat down and began to teach them. 3 The scribes and the Pharisees brought a woman caught in adultery, and having set her in the center of the court, 4 they said to Him, “Teacher, this woman has been caught in adultery, in the very act. 5 Now in the Law Moses commanded us to stone such women; what then do You say?” 6 They were saying this, testing Him, so that they might have grounds for accusing Him. But Jesus stooped down and with His finger wrote on the ground. 7 But when they persisted in asking Him, He straightened up, and said to them, “He who is without sin among you, let him be the first to throw a stone at her.” 8 Again He stooped down and wrote on the ground. 9 When they heard it, they began to go out one by one, beginning with the older ones, and He was left alone, and the woman, where she was, in the center of the court. 10 Straightening up, Jesus said to her, “Woman, where are they? Did no one condemn you?” 11 She said, “No one, Lord.” And Jesus said, “I do not condemn you, either. Go. From now on sin no more.”
To understand what happened, you need to realize that the Messiah had already been accused of abandoning Yahweh’s Law, and that’s what the scribes and Pharisees were trying to prove with the woman who had been caught in the act of adultery. In verse 6, we are told that they were setting a trap. We know that’s true because if the woman was caught in the act of adultery, so was a man, but where was he? If she was guilty of adultery, he was, too. The man’s absence makes it clear that the religious leaders wanted to find a way to accuse the Messiah of a crime that carried the death penalty. This encounter had nothing to do with the woman or the man or the sin they committed.
Did the Messiah say or do anything suggesting that He believed the Law of Moses was null and void? Absolutely not. To prove my point, look at what He told the scribes and Pharisees when they asked Him what should be done with her: “He who is without sin among you, let him be the first to throw a stone at her.”
None of them were sinless. Truth be told, the scribes and Pharisees were caught red-handed in the very act of sinning because they were trying to kill an innocent Man. That’s called murder—a clear violation of the 6th commandment. In a nutshell, the Messiah exposed their hypocrisy. They knew it and so did the onlookers.
The Messiah told the woman, “I do not condemn you, either. Go. From now on sin no more.” Was He excusing her sin? No. She repented, and she was forgiven. It’s interesting to point out that the religious leaders did not repent. In fact, they walked away from that humiliating experience and began concocting another scheme to trap Him.
Next, the Messiah told the religious leaders that He is Yahweh. He didn’t use the Name Yahweh because at that time simply saying the Name was considered to be blasphemy, a crime the punishment for which was death, and the time for His crucifixion had not arrived. Let’s take a look:
12 Then Jesus again spoke to them, saying, “I am the Light of the world; he who follows Me will not walk in the darkness, but will have the Light of life.” 13 So the Pharisees said to Him, “You are testifying about Yourself; Your testimony is not true.” 14 Jesus answered and said to them, “Even if I testify about Myself, My testimony is true, for I know where I came from and where I am going; but you do not know where I come from or where I am going. 15 You judge according to the flesh; I am not judging anyone. 16 But even if I do judge, My judgment is true; for I am not alone in it, but I and the Father who sent Me. 17 Even in your law it has been written that the testimony of two men is true. 18 I am He who testifies about Myself, and the Father who sent Me testifies about Me.” 19 So they were saying to Him, “Where is Your Father?” Jesus answered, “You know neither Me nor My Father; if you knew Me, you would know My Father also.” 20 These words He spoke in the treasury, as He taught in the temple; and no one seized Him, because His hour had not yet come.
21 Then He said again to them, “I go away, and you will seek Me, and will die in your sin; where I am going, you cannot come.” 22 So the Jews were saying, “Surely He will not kill Himself, will He, since He says, ‘Where I am going, you cannot come’?” 23 And He was saying to them, “You are from below, I am from above; you are of this world, I am not of this world. 24 Therefore I said to you that you will die in your sins; for unless you believe that I am He, you will die in your sins.” 25 So they were saying to Him, “Who are You?” Jesus said to them, “What have I been saying to you from the beginning?”
In verse 12, the Messiah said, “I am the Light of the world.” That’s one of His “I am” statements, and it was a claim to be Yahweh since the meaning of the Name Yahweh is “I am” or “I exist”. In verse 24, He said, “For unless you believe that I am He, you will die in your sins.” That was another claim to be Yahweh without saying the Name.
It’s clear that the religious leaders understood what the Messiah said, because they asked Him, “Who are You?” Again, they were attempting to trap Him. They were hoping that He would say “Yahweh”, but instead, He responded by asking them a question: “What have I been saying to you from the beginning?”
From the beginning, He had been telling them that He is Yahweh. That’s why they wanted to kill Him, but the time had not yet arrived for Him to give them the ammunition that they needed to charge Him with blasphemy. He continued,
26 “I have many things to speak and to judge concerning you, but He who sent Me is true; and the things which I heard from Him, these I speak to the world.” 27 They did not realize that He had been speaking to them about the Father. 28 So Jesus said, “When you lift up the Son of Man, then you will know that I am He, and I do nothing on My own initiative, but I speak these things as the Father taught Me. 29 And He who sent Me is with Me; He has not left Me alone, for I always do the things that are pleasing to Him.” 30 As He spoke these things, many came to believe in Him.
In verse 28, the Messiah said “I am He” again, and verse 30 says that “many came to believe in Him.” What did they believe? The only thing that makes any sense is that they believed He is Yahweh because that’s what He said. Even more, they believed that if they did not believe that He is Yahweh they would die in their sins because that’s what He said in verse 24.
The next two verses are very revealing because the Messiah addressed His remarks to those who believed Him:
31 So Jesus was saying to those Jews who had believed Him, “If you continue in My word, then you are truly disciples of Mine; 32 and you will know the truth, and the truth will make you free.”
In verse 31, the Messiah said, “My word.” Exactly what did He mean?
First, He was referring to the Tanach or the Old Testament, not the New Testament because at that time there was no New Testament. He said that if believers continued in or abided in the Tanach, they would know the truth and the truth would make them free. That’s a clear statement about the supremacy of the Tanach. Even more, by referring to the Tanach or Old Testament as “My word”, the Messiah was claiming to be Yahweh.
Second, He was distinguishing between the Tanach and halacha, or Jewish religious law. The scribes and Pharisees professed to believe the Tanach, but they taught from religious books such as the Mishnah and the Talmud. Those compilations are simply commentaries, yet halacha is based on them.
In point of fact, the Messiah was telling believers to follow Yahweh’s law (the Old Testament or the Tanach) and not the laws of the scribes and Pharisees (the Mishnah or the Talmud). The religious leaders’ response indicates that they understood Him perfectly:
33 They answered Him, “We are Abraham’s descendants and have never yet been enslaved to anyone; how is it that You say, ‘You will become free’?”
You can tell that the religious leaders were indignant, but the Messiah didn’t stop there:
34 Jesus answered them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, everyone who commits sin is the slave of sin. 35 The slave does not remain in the house forever; the son does remain forever. 36 So if the Son makes you free, you will be free indeed. 37 I know that you are Abraham’s descendants; yet you seek to kill Me, because My word has no place in you. 38 I speak the things which I have seen with My Father; therefore you also do the things which you heard from your father.”
The Messiah was telling the religious leaders that they had rejected Yahweh’s law and accepted man-made tradition (halacha) that was only loosely connected to Yahweh’s law. In essence, He was telling them that they were not Yahweh’s children because His children would never do such a thing. Then He gave a more complete explanation. It began in verse 38, “therefore you also do the things which you heard from your father”, and continued as a running dialogue between the Messiah and the religious leaders:
39 They answered and said to Him, “Abraham is our father.” Jesus said to them, “If you are Abraham’s children, do the deeds of Abraham. 40 But as it is, you are seeking to kill Me, a man who has told you the truth, which I heard from God; this Abraham did not do. 41 You are doing the deeds of your father.” They said to Him, “We were not born of fornication; we have one Father: God.” 42 Jesus said to them, “If God were your Father, you would love Me, for I proceeded forth and have come from God, for I have not even come on My own initiative, but He sent Me. 43 Why do you not understand what I am saying? It is because you cannot hear My word. 44 You are of your father the devil, and you want to do the desires of your father. He was a murderer from the beginning, and does not stand in the truth because there is no truth in him. Whenever he speaks a lie, he speaks from his own nature, for he is a liar and the father of lies. 45 But because I speak the truth, you do not believe Me. 46 Which one of you convicts Me of sin? If I speak truth, why do you not believe Me? 47 He who is of God hears the words of God; for this reason you do not hear them, because you are not of God.”
48 The Jews [or more correctly, the Jewish religious leaders] answered and said to Him, “Do we not say rightly that You are a Samaritan and have a demon?” 49 Jesus answered, “I do not have a demon; but I honor My Father, and you dishonor Me. 50 But I do not seek My glory; there is One who seeks and judges. 51 Truly, truly, I say to you, if anyone keeps My word [i.e., the Tanach or the Old Testament] he will never see death.” 52 The Jews said to Him, “Now we know that You have a demon. Abraham died, and the prophets also; and You say, ‘If anyone keeps My word, he will never taste of death.’ 53 Surely You are not greater than our father Abraham, who died? The prophets died too; whom do You make Yourself out to be?”
The verses that follow are the clearest presentation in the Bible that the Messiah claimed to be Yahweh, and it is equally clear that the Jewish religious leaders understood exactly what He said:
54 Jesus answered, “If I glorify Myself, My glory is nothing; it is My Father who glorifies Me, of whom you say, ‘He is our God’; 55 and you have not come to know Him, but I know Him; and if I say that I do not know Him, I will be a liar like you, but I do know Him and keep His word. 56 Your father Abraham rejoiced to see My day, and he saw it and was glad.” 57 So the Jews [or more correctly the Jewish religious leaders] said to Him, “You are not yet fifty years old, and have You seen Abraham?” 58Jesus said to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, before Abraham was born, I am.”
“Before Abraham was born” is not a good translation. This is what the Messiah actually said: “Truly, truly I say to you, before Abraham existed, I am.” In other words, He told them that He created Abraham and more to the point that He is the Creator—I am.
Did the religious leaders understand him? Verse 59 reveals the answer:
59 Therefore they picked up stones to throw at Him, but Jesus hid Himself and went out of the temple.
Of course, they understood what He said and they wanted to execute Him for claiming to be Yahweh, but that would have to wait for the proper time—Passover. Be that as it may, misreading the New Testament disguises many important truths the most important of which is the true identity of the Messiah and His attitude toward the Old Testament. I hope you can see that.

Jonathan S. Tobin: Turning a Blind Eye to Homegrown Terror— On Tuesday, Americans commemorated the first anniversary of the Boston Marathon bombing with solemn ceremonies and appropriate vows to not forget the victims. But in an ironic juxtaposition that few noted, the anniversary fell on the day when it became known that the New York City Police Department had abandoned an effort that was directly aimed at preventing more such instances of homegrown Islamist terrorism. They viewed the surveillance activities of the NYPD as a violation of the rights of Muslims and an unnecessary intrusion into that community’s affairs that amounted to illegal profiling.
