Michael Curtis—Let’s Invite Abbas to a Seder:
The Passover Seder is an occasion when Jewish people around the world remember their history. That complex past, embracing both suffering and happiness, is symbolized in the Seder service by the mixture of bitter horseradish with sweet parsley, representing spring and renewal. The collective memory is of ancient persecution, exile, pogroms, the Holocaust, perpetual anti-Semitism, present-day terrorism but also one of emancipation in democratic countries and the creation of the State of Israel. Above all, this story depicts the liberation of people 3,300 years ago from slavery and subjugation in the Egypt ruled by Pharoah to liberation, freedom, and sovereignty in a land promised to them.
The central part of the Seder is the asking and the response to four questions about the nature and significance of the festive ceremony, and the traditions observed and different foods that are eaten on the occasion. Those answers recall the struggles of Jews in their desire to be free: the coming forth from Egypt, and the struggle and rebellion against the Romans who destroyed the Second Temple. The memory of those struggles against persecution and discrimination is still echoed in the challenges today requiring the struggle against discrimination and anti-Semitism, the response to those who refuse to acknowledge the legitimacy of the State of Israel or who deny or minimize the relationship to the area of the Middle East that is still disputed, and also the answer to the bigoted and biased boycotters of Israel.

Yoav Limor: The markings of an organized attack— The terror attack near Hebron on the eve of Passover came at an especially sensitive time — not only did it coincide with a crisis in the peace talks, but it took place ahead of a series of memorial events scheduled for the next few days, which are automatically expected to significantly aggravate tensions across Judea and Samaria. On the Jewish side, a special prayer service scheduled to take place at the Cave of the Patriarchs is expected to draw thousands of worshipers to Hebron, spelling extensive security deployment. On the Palestinian side, the Palestinian Authority will mark “Prisoner Day” on Thursday with mass rallies across the West Bank, which Israeli defense officials believe are likely to escalate into violent riots.
Dr. Haim Shine: Indeed, they are trying to destroy us— An Israeli family was on its way to celebrate the Passover Seder in Kiryat Arba when they were ambushed. The father was killed in cold blood by inhumane murderers, whose only goal was to butcher Jews simply because of the victims’ Jewish identities. It was an unequivocal hate crime, carried out against the backdrop of Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas’ demand to free the murderers of Jews, while turning them into national Palestinian heroes. In a society’s breeding grounds for hatred, where murderers are exalted, cruel things grow. Thousands of miles away, in Kansas City, a proven anti-Semite entered a Jewish community center with the intention of slaughtering Jews. The incidents were distant but close enough. Islamic and Christian anti-Semitism joined forces this Passover eve.
Dr. Reuven Berko: Jihad tourism— The Islamic-Arab world is currently undergoing dramatic changes. The Middle East has never been a place where balance has prevailed, but is rather a place driven by megalomaniacal ambitions and religious, territorial and economical motives, fostering violent unrest in the region; and now, the artificial countries built on the ruins of the Ottoman Empire are imploding before our very eyes. The chaos bred by the Arab Spring has resulted in many Arab nations being overrun by gangs affiliated with the Muslim Brotherhood, Hamas or various Islamic Jihad “tourists.” These terrorists have condemned the fate of millions in Iraq, Syria, Afghanistan, Yemen and Egypt, they threaten other countries in the Middle East and Africa, and they now have their sights trained on us.
Nadav Shragai: The ‘House of Peace’ on the road to Abraham— Four hundred silver shekels was the amount our forefather Abraham dropped in Ephron the Hittite’s extended hand, and “Ephron’s field in Machpelah near Mamre — both the field and the cave in it, and all the trees within the borders of the field — was deeded” (Genesis 23:17), becoming the eternal inheritance of the Jewish people and a sepulchre for its ancestors. Half a million Jordanian dinars was the amount paid by a different Abraham, Morris Abraham from New York, a descendent of the 1929 exile, through frontman Ayoub Yusef Jaber to the House of Peace’s owners in Hebron, making it a permanent inheritance for the city’s Jews as well, while creating the much needed, natural passage between Kiryat Arba and the Cave of the Patriarchs.
Elliott Abrams: GCC nations: Protections and risks— With the exception of Yemen, the member nations of the Gulf Cooperation Council range from prosperous to extremely rich — but they are also vulnerable to security threats from terrorists and from Iran. The gathering in Syria of perhaps 25,000 jihadis, the Iranian nuclear weapons program, and Iranian subversion are the major perils they face, but the risks associated with such challenges are magnified when their major outside ally, the United States, appears determined to reduce its role in the region. The GCC states have reacted to these risks by increasing their military budgets, and this week’s news includes this story from the newspaper The National in the UAE: “Saudi Arabia becomes world’s fourth biggest military spender” after the United States, China, and Russia in 2013. Saudi expenditures now reach $67 billion, the story says. The UAE is now 15th in global expenditures on defense, at an estimated $19 billion, according to the source of all these numbers, the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute.
Dan Margalit: Keep calm and carry on (for now)— Atila Somfalvi did not relent. The Ynet reporter kept pressing Justice Minister Tzipi Livni what she would do if the negotiations she was leading fell short of a deal with the Palestinians. Her answer was the right one; she said that in the midst of a battle, one does not prepare for possible defeat. The fight must go on. Over the weekend, an editorial in The New York Times took note of the criticism Livni leveled at Economy and Trade Minister Naftali Bennett and her suggestion that he was undermining her peace efforts. But the paper ignored her answer to Somfalvi. In fact, it called on U.S. President Barack Obama to abandon the peace process, to act as if this was a lost diplomatic battle. To use military lingo, it said Obama should leave the wounded behind. That is, both Israel and the Palestinians. And himself.
Lee Smith: Internal Challenges to Abbas’ Leadership Behind Peace Talks Failure—PA President Mahmoud Abbas is now in the ninth year of a four-year presidential term. Staying in power requires keeping his rivals at bay. The leaders in the Gulf states are more worried about Iran and its nuclear program than about the Israelis. Their objective, right now, is to find a Palestinian version of Egypt’s new strongman, General Abdel Fattah al-Sisi – someone who can take on Hamas and other Islamist factions, block Iranian influence, and keep his nation united, stable, and, most importantly, quiet. Mohamed Dahlan, the former Gaza-based Fatah strongman, has been living in the United Arab Emirates. The plan some Arab leaders are pursuing, apparently, is to strengthen Dahlan to make another run at Hamas in Gaza, then muscle Abbas out of the leadership in Ramallah.
Gordon Chang: China on the Edge—The second thing we get wrong about China is that it is safe to ignore periodic Chinese threats to incinerate our cities and wage war on us. They employ salami-slicing tactics, as with Scarborough Shoal… so that they do not invite retaliation. If we cannot say these things clearly and publicly, the Chinese will think we are afraid of them. If they think we are afraid of them, they will act accordingly. Chinese leaders do not distrust us because they have insufficient contact with us. They distrust us because they see themselves as protectors of an ideology threatened by free societies.
Boaz Bismuth: Putin’s battle of a lifetime— Ukrainians are going to elect a president in less than two months, but the fate of the largest European country depends on who controls its eastern reaches. Russia, which unilaterally annexed Crimea, has all but threatened to take over mineral-rich eastern Ukraine. But the roughly 11 million Ukrainians in this region — which make up about a quarter of the general Ukrainian population — are not as pro-Russian as the Crimeans, and Russia is well aware of that. That is why it is banking on destabilizing eastern Ukraine, hoping this would make for a smoother takeover bid. The lack of stability would also present another boon for the Kremlin: the elections that were supposed to restore law and order to the streets of Ukraine will have to be postponed. How can a country hold elections in the midst of a civil war, right?

Neuger: NATO Bolsters Defenses Against Russia With Air, Sea Patrols (2)— NATO bolstered the defense of frontline member states in eastern Europe, recommitting to its original mission of fending off Russia in the wake of President Vladimir Putin’s menace to Ukraine. The U.S.-led alliance will upgrade contingency plans, hold more military drills in eastern Europe and step up air and naval policing on its flanks, Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen said. “We will have more planes in the air, more ships on the water and more readiness on the land,” Rasmussen told reporters in Brussels today after the 28 North Atlantic Treaty Organization allies approved the bulked-up defense posture.
