You Can’t Be a Christian and Take Sides with those Who Oppose Israel
Most people in the world today mistakenly believe that the Catholic Church is the Christian church. While it’s true that Catholics account for roughly half of the people who claim to be Christians, it’s not true that all Christians are Catholics. In fact, it is a sacrilege even to suggest that the Catholic Church is the universal church, and the word “Catholic” means “universal”.
Below is a list of prominent Christian groups and their approximate numbers:
- Catholic: 1.2 billion
- Protestant: 600–800 million
- Eastern Orthodoxy: 225–300 million
- Oriental Orthodoxy: 86 million
- Anglican: 85 million
- Restoration: 44 million
- Church of the East: 0.6 million
- Unitarian Universal: 0.6 million
Ekklesia is the Greek word that’s translated as “church”. It means “called out ones”, and it has absolutely nothing to do with the institutional church—either Catholic or non-Catholic. Collectively, Yahweh’s people are the church. We have been called out of the world to be ambassadors for the Messiah who is Yahweh. If you have any doubt about Yahweh’s identity or the church, you should read His Name is Yahweh. He did not delegate His sovereignty to anyone. To believe that He did is to worship a false god. That’s not an anti-Catholic declaration: it’s a statement of fact.
That said, judging by what I see, I think it’s fair to say that many people who claim to be Christians aren’t and that far too many of those who are Christians have failed to be good ambassadors. Take the United States, for example. Many Christians argue vociferously that the United States is a “Christian nation”, yet the attendees at the 2012 Democratic National Convention booed God and Barack Obama went on to win the presidency by a clear majority for his second term in office. That couldn’t have happened in a Christian nation. Even more, legalizing sodomy and abortion on demand which is the same as murder are not the kinds of things that a Christian nation would tolerate. In reality, the United States today isn’t a Christian nation except in the imaginations of Christian people.
Given their numbers, it’s fair to say that the Catholic Church is the 800-pound gorilla in the so-called “Christian community”, and it owns a lot of land in Israel. More importantly, it has far too much influence over Israel. In a recent article, Michael Curtis alluded to some of the problems that Israel has with the Vatican:
On October 15, 2013 the Vatican took a decisive, unambiguous action against Nazi Germany. It refused to grant Erich Priebke, an SS Nazi war criminal, a church funeral in Rome where he had died aged 100. In a sense it was compensating for the fact that Roman Catholic clerics after World War II helped him avoid prosecution and to escape, after a short stay in Vatican City, to Argentina where he lived for 50 years. Priebke was always unrepentant about his part in the massacre of 335 Italian civilians, including 75 Italian Jews, in the Ardeatine Caves in Rome on March 24, 1944. He was not simply a Holocaust denier but also, in a final interview in July 2013, made a repulsive contribution to history. He argued that the film of the death camps in Bergen-Belsen directed by Alfred Hitchcock was made specifically for propaganda purposes. Priebke, the brutal Nazi, complained that “the cynicism and total absence of human feeling in the movie are indeed horrifying.”
The relationship between the Vatican and the representatives of other faiths is a complex one but sometimes there are lighter moments that reveal moves towards greater collaboration. A more delightful, unexpected, and rather enchanting announcement was made by the Vatican in October 2013 that it was forming its own cricket team, to be called St. Peter’s Cricket Club, and that it would like to play a game with a Church of England team at Lord’s in London next year. This would symbolize the boosting of interfaith Christian dialogue.
A more serious and even more symbolic demonstration of interfaith collaboration is the negotiation also in October for a tentative agreement between the Vatican and the State of Israel on some difficult issues, along with consideration of the complex mixture of religious, political, and material factors involved in the relationship between the two states.
In the days to come as more pressure is applied by political and religious leaders to develop interfaith alliances, you can be certain that Israel will end up getting the short end of the stick. Don’t be deceived by those who would have you believe that Yahweh wants “interfaith alliances” because He doesn’t. If you doubt that, then read your Bible. Particularly, read about Gideon and Elijah. Yahweh expects us to be the ambassadors that He created us to be, and that does not include joining forces with worshippers of false gods.
This is the bottom line: you can’t serve Yahweh and any group that is bent on Israel’s destruction. The Jewish people are and always will be the chosen people. There are roughly 14,000,000 Jews in the world today and about 43% of them live in Israel, the Promised Land. Going against Israel is siding with Yahweh’s enemies. Regardless of what you claim to be, you can’t be a Christian and take sides with those who are against Yahweh and His chosen people. That’s not an opinion. It’s a fact. If you doubt it, you need to read about Balaam. He made that mistake, and this is what Jude said about Balaam and people like him:
“It was also about these men that Enoch, in the seventh generation from Adam, prophesied, saying, ‘Behold, Yahweh came with many thousands of His holy ones, to execute judgment upon all, and to convict all the ungodly of all their ungodly deeds which they have done in an ungodly way, and of all the harsh things which ungodly sinners have spoken against Him.’ These are grumblers, finding fault, following after their own lusts; they speak arrogantly, flattering people for the sake of gaining an advantage.” Jude 1: 14-16
This is the view of the Mediterranean Sea that Elijah had at the top of Mount Carmel when he had his confrontation with the prophets of Baal. He wasn’t there to build an interfaith alliance.

Elliott Abrams: Is the US spilling its allies’ secrets?— The news of the last few weeks has been filled with complaints that the United States is electronically spying not only on enemies but on allies as well. As I wrote in a previous blog post, if we have in fact targeted the cell phones of leaders of friends and allies, such as German Chancellor Angela Merkel, we should stop. Yes, the world is a dangerous place and gentlemen do read each others’ mail, but deliberately targeting the leader of an ally such as Germany is wrong and stupid. And especially so given the risk these days that such conduct will leak and damage important allied relationships. Spying this way on allies is bad enough. Revealing their secrets to the press is even worse. Yet we have a pattern of doing this when it comes to Israel, and the most recent example came on October 31.
Shoshana Bryen: Hamas and the “Peace Process”— The Palestinians have thrown a monkey wrench in the works again – as they have a pattern of doing every time the “peace process” is supposed to be close to “solving” the problem. Despite the secrecy surrounding the current U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry-sponsored talks, a Palestinian leak Sunday put positions on the table: a 1.9% land swap; no Israeli military presence in the Jordan Valley and no Israeli presence at all in East Jerusalem; control over water sources and resources; control of the Dead Sea and border crossings; the right to sign agreements with other states (Iran?); release of all Palestinian prisoners; and the right of Palestinian refugees and their descendants to choose to live in Israel or the Palestinian territories.
Douglas Murray: Are we losing the war for the soul of Islam?— I have been studying and thinking about Islam for almost half my life. I got a slight head start on much of the rest of the world thanks to a Sufi Muslim friend. From her I learned, in those pre-9/11 days, about the horrors of the Wahhabis and the Salafis, the Deobandis and the Khomeinists. And I heard about one thing in particular which I have since observed: how moderate movements in Islam have repeatedly lost out to the hardliners and how some of the most enlightened people you might meet can be trampled over by the most barbaric. It was a timely lesson. In the struggle for an enlightened form of Islam one can find many Muslim allies. But their organised history is one of repeated failure.
Prof. Abraham Ben-Zvi: Under Obama, US no longer on top— If any more proof were needed that the era of American dominance in today’s international arena is mired in a process of accelerated decline, Forbes magazine’s 2013 ranking of the world’s most influential people is simply further affirmation. The only surprising part of the ranking was not that U.S. President Barack Obama was ousted from the top spot by Russian President Vladimir Putin, but that the American president finished in second place ahead of considerably more impressive figures as far as their proven achievements are concerned (such as German Chancellor Angela Merkel) or the inspiring nature of their visions (Pope Francis, for example).
Yaakov Ahimeir: Remove the Nazi from the Jewish cemetery— A cry must go out from Jerusalem to Germany. The recent exposé in the German newspaper Bild that Gestapo chief and war criminal Heinrich Müller, one of the principal architects of the Holocaust, is buried in a Jewish cemetery in Berlin, cannot be met with indifference and must not be relegated to strictly historical or academic discussion. Müller’s fate, following his participation in the 1942 Wannsee Conference, during which the “final solution” was laid out, was unknown at the time of Nazi Germany’s surrender. His friend Adolf Eichmann claimed during his interrogation in Israel after being caught in 1960 that Müller was still alive at the time. However, Professor Johannes Tuchel, director of Berlin’s German Resistance Memorial Center and the person who uncovered this troubling new discovery, supports old evidence from an undertaker’s testimony that a body was buried in a Jewish cemetery wearing a Nazi general’s uniform.
Robert Spencer: Mohamed Elibiary Declares Victory Over the Constitution— In his 2002 letter to the American people explaining why he perpetrated the 9/11 attacks, Osama bin Laden asked, “What are we calling you to, and what do we want from you?,” and then immediately answered his own question: “The first thing that we are calling you to is Islam.” Wednesday his coreligionist Mohamed Elibiary, a member of the Homeland Security Advisory Council, declared victory: “I do consider the United States of America an Islamic country with an Islamically compliant constitution.”
Arnold Ahlert: ObamaCare: Illegal Voter Mine for the Democratic Party?— While many Americans remain focused on the ominous implications of ObamaCare with regard to health insurance or the faulty website, a far more serious issue remains under the radar. On Wednesday, two national election watchdog groups alleged that ObamaCare is really a massive voter registration vehicle masquerading as a healthcare bill. Gregg Phillips, the founder of the election integrity group Voters Trust takes it one step further. “I think [it] is the biggest voter registration fraud scheme in the history of the world,” he told Breitbart News.
Joseph Klein: Israel and the UN Human Rights Council Circus— Israel decided to end its year and a half boycott of the three-ring circus known as the United Nations Human Rights Council. Responding to significant diplomatic pressure from the United States and Germany, Israel sent representatives to a Council session on October 29th to participate in a review of Israel’s human rights record. The review was conducted in accordance with a process known as the Universal Periodic Review, in which each of the 193 member states of the United Nations has its human rights record assessed by the Council approximately every four years. Israel submitted a detailed 78-page report as part of this process, describing specific actions Israel has taken to fulfill its human rights obligations and responding to a number of recommendations by other member states.
Michael Curtis: Anti-Semitism in the Ukraine and Elsewhere in Europe— On the centenary of the infamous Beilis trial, an international conference on anti-Semitism was held on October 15-16, 2013 in Kiev, Ukraine, the city where the trial took place. The trial is probably the best known of those based on blood libel charges against Jews. Menachem Mendel Beilis, a 39-year-old Jew was accused on March 20, 1911 of murdering a 13-year-old Christian boy whose body was found in a cave near a Jewish owned brick factory outside Kiev. Beilis was accused of taking the boy’s blood in an act of ritual murder to make matzos for Passover.
Shamus Cooke: Is Obama Fundamentally Shifting His Middle East Strategy?— The Saudis and Israelis are fuming. Obama’s talks with Iran’s new President Hassan Rouhani point to a possible new direction in U.S.-Middle East policy. Iran is the regional arch-rival of the Saudis and Israelis, who for decades have shared the mantle as the main U.S. allies in the Middle East. The Arab Spring has — along with the ascendance of Russia and China — shifted the geo-political ground of the region, and the U.S. is trying to maintain a dominant position with a new strategy. This shift, if successful, has the potential to create a political crisis within the U.S. government as well as abroad. Israel and Saudi Arabia, for example, won’t quietly accept a diminished role in the Middle East. Israel gave a thunderous response to Obama’s Iranian talks last week by committing its fourth war crime against Syria in the last year, by launching a bombing raid against a Syrian military installation. Since Obama is currently pursuing “Geneva II” peace talks with Syria and Russia, the timing of the Israeli bombing suggests that Israel is intent on not being ignored.

Blessings in the Book of Revelation is a book that you need to read, especially now.
