Salvation, Obedience, and the Leading of the Spirit—Part 3: Legalism is Not a New Problem
I think legalism is the biggest problem we face today as a body of believers in the Messiah. The prophets dealt with it too. For example, see Amos 4: 4-5, Isaiah 1: 11-17, Isaiah 58; and Malachi 1-3, so it isn’t a new problem. Since the creation, legalists have been making the classic mistake of believing and teaching others that we need to earn salvation by doing good works. Typically, they take great pride in their accomplishments because they think that that’s what sets them apart from other less devout Christians.
Make no mistake. Legalists think that they have a special place in Yahweh’s kingdom — i.e., that they’re better than everybody else. They’ll deny it vehemently if you say something to them, but their words, their actions, and the smug looks on their faces give them away. They remind me of a person that Ray Stevens sang about in his song Mississippi Squirrel Revival. Her name was Sister Bertha Better-than-you. If you’re not familiar with the tune, you can watch it on YouTube. You’ll be glad you did. When I hear those lyrics, I think about all the legalists I know and laugh.

Steve Apfel: Christianity gone haywire, and going down— Tom Holland the historian reckons we’re witnessing the total extinction of Christendom in the Middle East. And Christian leaders’ attitudes and actions in the Holy Land are far from standing in the way.
Dr. Haim Shine: Resist the misleading Iranian model— Not since the shrewd Haman tried to annihilate the Jews in 127 states has the world witnessed such a clever Persian bigwig as Iranian President Hasan Rouhani.
David Horovitz: Netanyahu holds his tongue, and will have to hold his fire: The prime minister is certain there is no diplomatic route, just a blind alley, but he was only too aware there was no convincing the president.
Aaron Kalman: When Bibi met Obama—The president’s statement that the military option remains open gains wide coverage; back in Israel, a possible coalition crisis.
Jeffrey Goldberg: Don’t Be Fooled by Iran’s Charming New Leader—Hassan Rouhani, the president of Iran, is a moderate only in comparison to his predecessor, the unhinged Mahmoud Ahmadinejad. Rouhani has been a superior soldier for Iran’s supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, and an anti-American propagandist for much of his professional life. (Rouhani blamed 9/11 on the “wrongs and mistakes of American policies,” and argued that the U.S. Air Force shot down Flight 93 which crashed in Pennsylvania.) There’s no reason to think that Rouhani, who is acting on Khamenei’s behalf, is ready to shut down his country’s nuclear program.
Steven Ditto: Who Is Hassan Rouhani?— President Rouhani’s track record shows that he is deeply committed to preserving the regime’s longstanding interests, and frequently at odds with the principles of international law.
Michael J. Totten: Beware Persian Leaders with Masks—Hassan Rouhani is not Iran’s leader. Supreme Guide Ayatollah Ali Khamenei is Iran’s leader and the one who makes all sovereign decisions. Rouhani does what he’s told.
Amos Yadlin: Yes to Negotiations, Yes to an Agreement –an Agreement that, even if Violated, Distances Iran from the Bomb— The final weekend of September 2013 saw the Iranian charm school at work in full force, with a campaign comprising every component of a sophisticated public diplomacy strategy. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who flew to the US for talks with President Obama and a speech at the UN General Assembly, faces a tough mission: on the one hand, he must not paint himself into a corner and become the obstacle to an agreement, i.e., the party that is oblivious to the changes in the international arena and is unwavering in pursuit of an aggressive alternative. On the other hand, he must present a unified, well-reasoned argument that will answer the question of “now what.” What is a good agreement that can credibly neutralize the danger of an Iranian bomb, and what is a bad agreement that will allow Iran to attain a possibility to dash toward a nuclear bomb? This article proposes ten points for consideration by the Prime Minister in his discussion with President Obama and his speech at the UN.
Boaz Bismuth: Iranian flirtations, Israeli obligations— The U.S.-Israeli relationship runs much deeper than America’s summer fling with Iran.
Claudia Rosett: Iran, the UN’s New Authority on Nuclear Disarmament—On Sept. 26, Iran’s President Hassan Rouhani addressed the UN’s first ever High Level Meeting of the General Assembly on Nuclear Disarmament, which showcased Iran not as a terror-sponsoring UN-sanctioned nuclear-proliferating regime, but as an authority on ridding the world of nuclear weapons. The Non-Aligned Movement, which includes 119 of the UN’s 193 member states and which initiated the meeting, is currently chaired by Iran. In other words, this UN nuclear conclave, presenting Iran not as a proliferator but as a patron of nuclear disarmament, was choreographed by Iran itself.

The scripture below is from the New American Standard Bible, and the hyperlinks associated with each word are from Strong’s Concordance for the New American Standard Bible.
Amos 3: 3-5
Do two men walk together unless they have made an appointment? Does a lion roar in the forest when he has no prey? Does a young lion growl from his den unless he has captured[something]? Does a bird fall into a trap on the ground when there is no bait in it? Does a trap spring up from the earth when it captures nothing at all?

Blessings in the Book of Revelation is a book that you need to read, especially now. There are blessings throughout the Scriptures but Revelation is the only book in the Bible actually containing a specific blessing for reading it. It’s repeated twice, once at the beginning and again at the end. This is the reason that I believe Revelation should be the first step toward studying biblical prophecy. Though not easy to do, Revelation can be broken down and understood by anyone, not just the academic elite. So, Revelation’s blessings are for everyone. Click here to order the eBook.
