Christopher Goins: Lawyer: Banning Assault Weapons A Feel-Good Gesture ‘Unless You’re Prepared to Confiscate’— The man who joined forces with Ralph Nader in the 1970s to virtually invent the consumer-interest lawsuit said Thursday that an outright ban on “assault weapons” might make some people feel better, but it would do nothing to curb violence at schools. George Washington University Law Professor Alan Morrison says gun confiscation is the way to go.

Given the fight that is brewing over the nominations of Chuck Hagel and John Brennan for the Department of Defense and the CIA, there is little appetite on the Hill for any further effort to deny the president his choice to run an important department.
Jonathan S. Tobin: Obama Needs to Warn Abbas on Terror—Mahmoud Abbas celebrated the start of the ninth year of his four-year term as president of the Palestinian Authority in Cairo today by attending a summit with the leader of the rival Hamas group. Abbas was summoned to the meeting due to pressure from Egyptian President Mohamed Morsi, who is expected to help pressure Gulf nations to donate money to the perpetually bankrupt PA. The Muslim Brotherhood government of Egypt has long sought to promote the idea of Palestinian unity, something that would strengthen the position of their Hamas allies. This worries Abbas, who also remains the head of the hopelessly incompetent and corrupt Fatah movement that runs the PA. But while there is little likelihood that this latest conclave between the two groups will lead to an actual merger and power sharing in the West Bank and Gaza, the signs are clear that they are moving closer to each other in other ways.
Peter Wehner: Barack Obama, Man on a Liberal Mission— In a recent column, David Brooks of the New York Times wrote, “Chuck Hagel has been nominated to supervise the beginning of this generation-long process of defense cutbacks. If a Democratic president is going to slash defense, he probably wants a Republican at the Pentagon to give him political cover, and he probably wants a decorated war hero to boot.” Brooks is on the mark with his analysis, and I’d add several things to it.
Edward Alexander: “Some of My Best Friends are Antisemites”: Obama Nominates Hagel— The most inane (and therefore most frequent) journalistic explanation of Obama’s nomination of “Chuck” Hagel for Secretary of Defense is that (Wall Street Journal version) “the president wants a Republican in his cabinet” to demonstrate his ability to “reach across the aisle.” It is inane for three reasons: 1. virtually nobody in the Republican Party, outside of the fever swamps inhabited by Pat Buchanan and his friends, wants Hagel in any responsible position; 2. no president in modern times has been less interested in amicable bi-partisanship than Obama; 3. “reaching across the aisle” is the fatuous slogan that helped sink the last two Republican candidates for president—and nobody knows that better than Obama.
Dovid Efune: Chuck Hagel, and Whether it is Better for Jews to be Quiet or Loud— The broad spectrum of responses that President Obama’s nomination of former Nebraska Senator Chuck Hagel has engendered from within the pro-Israel community is noteworthy. Not because there are variances of opinion on what his nomination means for the U.S.-Israel relationship, but precisely the opposite. Almost every major vocal pro-Israel organization and many individual leaders have strongly opposed Chuck Hagel’s appointment because of his stated principles and ideals. However, their reactions to his nomination have been quite different from one another.
David G. Savage: Obama advisor who had decried ‘war on terror’ now defends drones— As dean of Yale Law School, Harold Hongju Koh was among the fiercest critics of President George W. Bush’s “war on terror,” arguing that his administration had trampled the Constitution and tarnished America’s international standing by claiming the power to capture “enemy combatants” abroad and hold them without charges at the prison in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba.
Fred Weir: Does Depardieu herald Russia as a new tax haven?— French movie star Gerard Depardieu has returned to his native habitat in western Europe following a tumultuous Russia visit that has left behind a nation collectively scratching its head over the instinctively authoritarian Vladimir Putin’s quirky decision to bestow Russian citizenship upon a cantankerous foreign tax rebel, and the equally odd spectacle of Mr. Depardieu accepting it amid a fusillade of lavish praise for Mr. Putin’s regime.
Olga Khazan: A Defector’s Tale: Assad’s Reluctant Army—About 80% of Syrian troops are conscripts from the country’s Sunni Muslim minority. (Many of the officers, however, are Alawite, the same sect as Assad.) Many Sunnis support the rebels, so it’s not uncommon for some Syrian soldiers to feel disdain for their own cause.
Aaron David Miller” A Historic Shift toward Palestinian Unity?— Since Hamas’ 2007 takeover of Gaza, there have been at least four unsuccessful efforts to restore Palestinian unity, but neither Hamas nor Fatah is really serious about doing so – even while all Palestinians say they desperately want them to succeed. Neither side has any real desire to pay the price for what a real merger would entail.
Roger L. Simon: Who’s Worse — Al Gore or Bernie Madoff?—Al Gore has been on the wrong side of everything — first making anthropogenic global warming into a phony catastrophe and now introducing the mouthpiece of Sharia into American homes, while personally gaining hundreds of millions of dollars in the process. Bethany Mandel: Demonizing Gun Owners Isn’t Working—While the national gun conversation rages on, liberals have decided to play hardball with legal gun owners, attempting to shame those who apply for gun permits so that they can legally and safely own and carry guns. The opening salvo came from the Journal News, a local New York newspaper that decided to publish the names and addresses, including a handy map, of every single legally permitted gun owner in Westchester County. Alana wrote about a hilarious twist in the story when the newspaper’s editors, who had received a significant amount of flak for the story, decided to employ armed guards in order to protect the newspaper’s offices.
Jonah Goldberg: Biden’s Faulty Lifeguard Logic—”As the president said, if your actions result in only saving one life, they’re worth taking,” Vice President Joe Biden declared on Wednesday as he previewed what his commission on gun violence might actually do.
Fritz Pfister: America’s Future? Look to Illinois— Blagojevich’s Illinois was reeling in corruption, political favoritism, extra constitutional mandates, and unfunded pension liabilities growing exponentially due to quid pro quo union contracts. Blessings in the Book of Revelation is a book that you need to read, especially now. There are blessings throughout the Scriptures but Revelation is the only book in the Bible actually containing a specific blessing for reading it. It’s repeated twice, once at the beginning and again at the end. This is the reason that I believe Revelation should be the first step toward studying biblical prophecy.
