Victor Davis Hanson: New Year Stampede— There is a New Year stampede developing that we have not seen for a long time. Gun stores are swamped with panicking customers. They are looking for handguns, semiautomatic rifles, and as much ammunition as they can afford. But buyers are not just camouflaged hunters, conspiracy theorists, and gun hoarders. Instead, many of those purchasing firearms and ammo are so-called ordinary people, convinced that this administration will soon begin to centrally register — and then ban — far more than assault rifles.
Larry Elder: Guns and Piers Morgan—CNN’s Piers Morgan writes that the pro-gun crowd’s anger toward him stems from anti-British bias: “This gun debate is an ongoing war of verbal attrition in America — and I’m just the latest target, the advantage to the gun lobbyists being that I’m British, a breed of human being who burned down the White House in 1814 and had to be forcefully deported en masse, as no American will ever be allowed to forget.”
Itamar Marcus and Nan Jacques Zilberdik: The Palestinian “Holy Trinity”: Jesus, Arafat and Abbas— The Palestinian leadership’s falsification of history by presenting Jesus as an ancient Palestinian increased as Christmas approached this year. The PA official dailyAl-Hayat Al-Jadida on Dec. 24 reported the governor of the Ramallah district Leila Ghannam saying: “We all have the right to be proud that Jesus is a Palestinian.”
Aidan Fishman: Israel Advocacy on Campus – It’s Easier Than You Think—For far too many people, any mention of the words “Israel” and “university campus” in close conjunction conjure up images of doom and gloom. University students are steadily growing hostile toward the Jewish State, and the anti-Israel Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) Movement is gaining credibility on campuses across the United States and Canada – or so we are led to believe.
Washington Post Editorial: Iranian Nuclear Talks Need to Come to a Close—As the year begins, the Obama administration and its diplomatic partners are expecting the renewal of negotiations with Iran over its nuclear program, after a six-month hiatus. But there is scant indication that a breakthrough is in store. The international coalition intends to offer a slightly modified version of the deal Tehran rejected last June. But Iran has been slow to agree to a new meeting and, according to the New York Times, did not respond to a post-election feeler by the Obama administration on direct, bilateral talks.
Robert Tait: Jewish Settlements “Same as Falkland Islands”—Gideon Saar, Israel’s education minister, was answering criticism by the British Foreign Office minister, Alistair Burt, of official approval for a university in Ariel in the West Bank. “Our connection to Ariel is at least as strong as the UK’s connection to the Falkland Islands. I do not accept the British condemnation,” he said. “The true impediment to peace is the Palestinians’ incitement and pro-terrorism education.”
Khaled Abu Toameh: The Palestinian Authority’s Inconvenient Truths—Here are examples of some of the inconvenient truths that the Palestinian leadership in the West Bank does not want others to know about: Over 100 senior PLO and Fatah officials hold Israeli-issued VIP cards that grant them various privileges denied to most Palestinians. Out of the 600 Christians from Gaza who visited the West Bank to celebrate Christmas, dozens have asked to move to Israel. Dozens of Christian families from east Jerusalem have moved to Jewish neighborhoods because they no longer feel comfortable living among Muslims.
Giora Eiland: Operation Pillar of Defense in Gaza: Strategic Perspectives— In Operation Pillar of Defense, Israel defined the enemy as a terrorist organization, which in fact it is not. Gaza is de facto a state in every sense, and it is therefore proper to deal with it as such. Regarding it as a state offers the option of inflicting damage to its national infrastructures during a military confrontation. It was possible to expand the operation by massively attacking all targets of infrastructure and governance in Gaza.
Victor Davis Hanson: 2013: Welcome to Very, Very Scary Times—Utopias such as Greece, Libya and Mexico are possible for America too, if only we would just junk that evil Constitution. I am sure that history offers all sorts of examples where people without such evil documents protected free speech and religious worship — out of “respect.” Ask Socrates, Jesus, six million Jews, 20 million Russians, or those with eyeglasses during the days of the Khmer Rouge.
Bridget Johnson: Dem Senator Voted Against Deal for Not Including Entitlement Reform—First, it was Sen. Michael Bennet (D-Colo.) voting against the fiscal cliff deal because it added to the deficit. Now one of the other Democratic “no” votes in the upper chamber — from Joe Biden’s home state, no less — says he rejected the deal because it didn’t tackle entitlement reform.
Paula Bolyard: Why Occupy Values Lead to Occupy Violence— The Occupy Cleveland movement ground to an anticlimactic halt last year as four of the five men accused of plotting to blow up an area bridge received prison sentences ranging from 6-11 years. After an undercover operation, the FBI arrested the men April 30 in what the agency termed an act of domestic terrorism. The men later admitted their roles in a plan to remotely detonate improvised devices containing C-4 explosives. … The men pleaded guilty in September to charges of conspiracy to use a weapon of mass destruction, attempted use of a weapon of mass destruction and use of an explosive device to destroy property used in interstate commerce.
Bryan Preston: Hobby Lobby’s Revolution Begins Today— The owners of arts and crafts store Hobby Lobby and Christian retailer Mardel begin the New Year fighting an old fight that, until Barack Obama’s election, was settled in America: the fight for the right to freedom of conscience. The Green family-owned businesses are refusing to comply with the Obama government’s order that they provide abortifacient drugs in their health care coverage for employees. Providing such drugs violates the family’s religious beliefs.
Ed Koch: Dear David Cameron, Why Would You Expect Israel to Cooperate in its Intended Lynching?— Will Britain come to Israel’s aid? I recall when in one of those wars, Britain declined to deliver to Israel tanks it had purchased from your country. Britain under Chamberlain participated in the Munich sellout of Czechoslovakia. What you and your European colleagues are doing now is repeating the sellout, this time of Israel. The Czech Republic, mindful of what happened to it, is the only European country to vote no to Palestinian statehood. When one of your predecessors told the world that he offered “peace in our time,” he wrote himself into history as a disgrace. How will history on this issue recall you?
Moshe Philips: Israel Better Brace for Secretary of State John Kerry— Kerry, however, is the much bigger problem for Israel. Hagel as Secretary of Defense will be tasked with handling military issues. Kerry will be in a position to effect policy as it impacts Israel, set an overall tone for the United States in the Middle East and be a key player in future negotiations.
Jeff Jacoby: People are truly good at heart? Sadly, no—This fixation on stopping bad things — as opposed to stopping bad people or bad behavior — goes beyond keeping air travel safe from al-Qaeda. On the international stage, it shows up in campaigns to reduce strategic arsenals and destroy nuclear warheads, regardless of the moral caliber of the governments possessing them. In schools, zero-tolerance drug and alcohol policies have been applied so rigidly, USA Today observes, that “kids have been kicked out of school for possession of Midol, Tylenol, Alka Seltzer, cough drops, and Scope mouthwash.”

If Senator Manchin were to educate himself by, for example, attending Front Sight’s four-day defensive handgun class, he would learn the two primary answers: (1) Failure to stop the aggressor and (2) Multiple aggressors.

And so we should probably have expected nothing less (or nothing more) in Michael Lind’s Salon essay explaining why he has moved away from the American right. But conservatives shouldn’t be deterred by the headline, “Right-wing dreams of demented utopias,” because it isn’t at all clear that Lind knows what the word “utopia” means.
Bethany Mandel: The Mentally Ill Don’t Have Motives—Last week local papers in New York City were captivated by yet another senseless killing. A 46-year old Indian immigrant, Sunando Sen, was pushed onto the subway tracks as a train was pulling into the station by a woman standing nearby. He was killed by the collision and initially, the woman, with whom he had not visibly communicated in any way, fled the scene. The city was left asking what many communities affected by senseless violence ask: Why?
Jonathan S. Tobin: Sotomayor’s Blow to Religious Liberty—Chief Justice John Roberts’s decision to uphold the constitutionality of ObamaCare ended the discussion about the president’s signature health care legislation as far as most of the media was concerned. But for Americans whose rights have been infringed by the bill’s mandate requiring business owners to pay for services that violate their religious beliefs, the issue remains a matter of vital concern. On January 1 the penalties associated with that mandate went into effect and the battle in the courts to head off this grievous infringement of religious liberty is meeting with mixed success.

Blessings in the Book of Revelation is a book that you need to read, especially now. There are blessings throughout the Scriptures but Revelation is the only book in the Bible actually containing a specific blessing for reading it. It’s repeated twice, once at the beginning and again at the end. This is the reason that I believe Revelation should be the first step toward studying biblical prophecy.
