SnyderTalk Editorial: Congress should demand an investigation of malfeasance in the Department of Education


This is a quote from the article above: “President Obama’s top education official urged government employees to attend a rally that the Rev. Al Sharpton organized to counter a larger conservative event on the Mall.”

This is how the email to education employees actually began: “ED (Department of Education) staff are invited to join Secretary Arne Duncan, the Reverend Al Sharpton, and other leaders on Saturday, Aug. 28, for the ‘Reclaim the Dream’ rally and march.”

For those of you who have never worked in government, this may appear to be a harmless request, or as the email states, an “invitation”, but it’s not.  I worked in state government while Chuck Robb was Governor of Virginia.  I was his Policy Advisor for Regulatory Reform.  We would never have dared to do anything like this because we would have been called on the carpet, and the people of Virginia would have punished us for being so brazenly political.  That said, if we had been so foolish, we would have expected state employees to comply.  In fact, we would have made sure they did.

One of the secrets to running a government or a department in government is to ensure that people are doing what you’re telling them to do.  Harry Truman famously said this about President-elect Dwight Eisenhower who succeeded him in the White House.  “Poor Ike.  He’ll give orders and expect people to obey.”  Truman was drawing a sharp distinction between government workers and soldiers in war.  In the military, orders are to be obeyed, and failure to obey orders results in dire consequences.  But leading government workers is like pushing a string or herding cats.  To make sure they fall in line behind the policies of the leader, systems are put in place to monitor compliance.

This incident raises three important questions:

  1. Did President Obama know about the “invitation”?
  2. Did President Obama or his chief of staff, Rahm Emanuel, instruct department secretaries to extend the “invitation”?
  3. How many other department secretaries extended “invitations” to attend Sharpton’s rally?

Arne Duncan is President Obama’s Secretary of Education.  He’s from Chicago.  From 2001 to 2009, he was CEO of Chicago Public Schools.  He was appointed to that position by Mayor Richard Daley of Chicago.  Duncan learned politics in the same cesspool as our president, and you can bet that they know what an “invitation” means in Chicago.  Duncan got an undergraduate degree in sociology from Harvard.  He graduated magna cum laude, so I’ll assume that he’s not stupid.  He must have known what he was doing.

In effect, more than 4,000 Department of Education employees were ordered by their leader to attend a rally put on by his imminence the Right Reverend Al Sharpton of Tawana Brawley fame.  This is a perfect example of Chicago thug politics at work in our nation’s capital.  Many more government workers may have received similar “invitations”, but we don’t know at this point.  We need to find out.  Administrative abuse like this can’t be allowed to go unpunished.

When President Obama ran for office, he told us that he was going to change government in Washington, and he has.  Instead of the openness, transparency, and ethical standards we were promised, this is what we’ve gotten:

  1. cabinet members and several advisors who are tax cheats and socialists,
  2. Science Czar John Holdren who believes in forced abortions, mass sterilizations, and seizing babies from teen mothers,
  3. Regulatory Czar Cass Sunstein who believes in “Explicit Consent”, harvesting human organs without family consent, and allowing animals to be represented in court while banning all hunting,
  4. Safe School Czar Kevin Jennings, a homosexual and organizer of a group called gay, lesbian, straight, education network who has a history of bad advice to teenagers,
  5. Diversity Czar Mark Lloyd who believes in curtailing free speech, taking from one and giving to another to spread the wealth, and who supports Venezuela’s President, Hugo Chavez,
  6. Senior White House Advisor Valerie Jarrett, an avowed Socialist,
  7. White House Communications Director Anita Dunn who said Mao Tse Tung is her favorite philosopher, the person she turns to most for inspiration,
  8. Global Warming Czar Carol Browner, a well-known socialist who is a strong supporter of cap and trade, and
  9. Green Energy Czar Van Jones, an ex-convict and an avowed communist.

I could continue, but I won’t.  Is this what we bargained for?  I certainly hope not.  We really do need change, and we need it now. It can’t wait until November. Congress should demand an investigation of malfeasance in the Department of Education and find out if other cabinet secretaries committed this egregious offense.

SnyderTalk Commentary: I’m not a conspiracy buff or a Chicken Little, but this looks very peculiar to me.  Deep-water oil rig explosions are rare.  Have law enforcement officials considered sabotage?  Terrorist attacks?  Are the two recent oil platform problems connected?

We have a committed enemy.  They’re imaginative.  We can’t make deals with them.  We can’t bow and scrape enough to make them back off.  We’ll see what an investigation turns up, but I’m very curious at this point.

You need to watch the video above.  It will be available 24/7 on SnyderTalk under Pages in the column on the right in the page titled “Palestinian and Hamas Charters”.  As you watch it, consider this.  Empire builders have been trying to control the Middle East for more than 3,000 years.

Today, people think that empire building is passé, but the facts tell a different story.  Not so long ago there was a saying that everyone knew was true: “The sun never sets on the British Empire.”  In 1922, the British Empire ruled about a fourth of the world’s population.  Today England is an island, and the United Kingdom has a population of just over 61,000,000 people.  The Ottoman Empire, another great empire, lasted for more than 600 years before it collapsed in 1923.

The United States is not now and never has been an empire building nation in the traditional sense.  Truth is we tried our best to stay out of the affairs of other nations until the end of World War II.  At the end of WWII, there was no other country on the planet with its manufacturing capacity intact and a viable economic infrastructure.  It’s no surprise that the US became the lone global superpower following the war.  Russian’s like to think that they were a superpower until the Soviet Union imploded in 1991, but that’s not accurate.  Russia’s military might was formidable, but its economic infrastructure couldn’t support its people and its military.  That became obvious when President Ronald Reagan stepped up US defense spending and set in motion events that eventually led to the demise of the USSR.

The concept of empire isn’t obsolete, but it has changed dramatically.  Since the end of WWII and the Cold War and with the increasing influence of the UN and groups like NATO, for example, coalitions of nations working together to achieve global objectives have been functioning in much the same way that empires worked in the past.  Today’s system is more voluntary and more dynamic, and it’s subject to change as the interests of “coalition partners” evolve.

The fluidity of today’s system has opened the door to special interest groups who want to gain or regain power.  The increasing belligerence of radical Islamists is a perfect case in point.  Islamists don’t represent a nation.  They represent people with common values who live in nations around the world.  By energizing their adherents, Islamists influence political decisions in every nation to their advantage, and if left unchecked, they can gain political control.  It’s happening all over the world right now.  Afghanistan, Pakistan, Egypt, and yes, even the United States are perfect examples.  Twenty years ago, who would have guessed that the US would open its doors and its arms to people who have vowed to destroy our way of life?

As you read stories about the Cordoba Mosque at Ground Zero, for instance, keep in mind that it’s part of a worldwide effort to create a global caliphate under Sharia Law.  It reminds me of something Yahweh told Isaiah:

He (Yahweh) said, “Go, and tell this people: ‘Keep on listening, but do not perceive; keep on looking, but do not understand.  Render the hearts of this people insensitive, their ears dull, and their eyes dim, otherwise they might see with their eyes, hear with their ears, understand with their hearts, and return and be healed.’” (Isaiah 6: 9-10)

SnyderTalk Editorial: The ban against praying on the Temple Mount should be lifted


Did you know that Jews and Christians will be arrested by the Muslim Gestapo if they dare to pray on the Temple Mount?  I’m not kidding, and that includes moving your lips in silent prayer if you are observed doing it by the Muslim Gestapo.

I bring this up to make 2 points:

  1. It’s laughable that people think you have to lay prostrate on the ground to pray while someone chants over a PA system.  That’s nothing more than rote recitation.  I’ve been on the Temple Mount many times, and I’ve prayed every single time.  I’ve even prayed while being questioned by the Muslim Gestapo.  I wasn’t arrested because I smiled and nodded my head while I was being lectured, but I was praying all the while.
  2. It seems strange, even eerie, that Muslims won’t allow Jews and Christians to pray on the Temple Mount to the One True God—Yahweh—while they demand the right to pray anyplace they want 5 times a day.  Not only that, they want to pray in some of the most controversial places imaginable—places like the location near Ground Zero where they want to build the Cordoba Mosque.

I’m not a politician; I’m not running for office; and I reject all forms of political correctness.  It’s time to stop putting up with the nonsense and tell people what we think.  Muslims don’t deserve a free pass.  They shouldn’t be allowed to impose their beliefs and their warped Sharia law on the rest of us.  I’ll go one step further.  The ban against praying on the Temple Mount should be lifted.  There is no excuse for the obvious double standard.  Why the Israeli government tolerates it is a mystery to me.

Highlights from Congressman Boehner’s political career:

  • 1991—Boehner was part of the Gang of Seven that challenged the House establishment.  They took on Republicans and Democrats and were instrumental in closing the House Bank (House banking scandal); they exposed “dine-and-dash” practices at the House Restaurant; and they brought to light drug sales and illegal cash-for-stamps deals at the House Post Office.
  • 1994— Boehner was a key player in drafting the Contract with America.
  • 1995—Boehner was accused of unethical conduct when he distributed campaign contributions from tobacco industry lobbyists on the House floor as House members were considering how to vote on tobacco subsidies.  Eventually, he led the effort to change House rules and prohibit campaign contributions from being distributed on the House floor.
  • 1996—Boehner played an important role in passage of the Freedom to Farm Act.
  • 2001 to 2006—as Chairman of the House Education and Workforce Committee, Boehner authored the Pension Protection Act and a school choice program for low-income children in Washington, DC.  He was instrumental in the passage of No Child Left Behind.
  • September 18, 2008—Boehner attended a closed meeting with congressional leaders, then-Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson, and Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke during which he was asked to draft legislation to help financially troubled banks. According to Marketplace, that same day Boehner cashed out of an equity mutual fund. He said his broker acted alone and did not consult with Boehner prior to making the trade.
  • October 3, 2008—Boehner voted for the Troubled Asset Relief Program (TARP).
  • Boehner has been highly critical of “cap and trade” saying that it would jeopardize job growth, and he led opposition to the trillion-dollar stimulus favoring instead an alternative economic recovery plan and a Republican budget that was authored by Rep. Paul Ryan (R-WI).
  • July 2010—Politico published a story in which it was revealed that “lobbyists and other major donors across the country who give the maximum or help raise $100,000 will get meetings with Boehner…VIP access to all events, including roundtables, briefings, breakout discussions and interactive panel discussions.”  Boehner’s fundraising closely resembles the pay-to-play that has gotten so much attention lately thanks primarily to former Illinois Governor Rod Blagojevich.  The article also said that “Boehner convened a meeting of top Republican lobbyists at the National Republican Congressional Committee last Thursday to enlist them in the cause and armed them with slick, presidential-level brochures and fundraising materials making the case for putting him in the speaker’s chair.”

A May 2009 article in the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review said that “on both sides of the aisle, Boehner earns praise for candor and an ability to listen.”  In March 2009, the Cleveland Plain Dealer said that Boehner “has perfected the art of disagreeing without being disagreeable.”  In the latest edition of Newsweek, an article by Howard Fineman asks this question: “Is Rep. John Boehner an empty suit—a sharp suit, to be sure, one Don Draper might wear—or is there more there?”  The article’s conclusion?  “No one on the right—the establishment, the Tea Party—should look past Boehner’s ability. He was drawn to politics by a resentment of the powers that be. He’s a survivor of intraparty struggle after intraparty struggle. He’s a get-along guy known for making those around him look good (he has pledged to let junior members, even Tea Partiers, introduce their own amendments).”

Congress needs a workhorse as Speaker of the House who isn’t tied too closely to the DC way of doing things to put us on the right path.  Is Rep. Boehner that person or would someone like Rep. Paul Ryan (D-WI) be a better choice?  You be the judge.

SnyderTalk Editorial: The Economy is a mess, and the president wants more stimulus money.  What should we do about it?


The latest data on the economic front doesn’t look good, and that’s putting it mildly.  Economic growth during the second quarter was revised downward from 2.4% to an anemic 1.6% by the Commerce Department.  At that rate of growth, there are not enough jobs being created in the United States to employ new entrants into the job market.  The economy needs to grow at a 3% annual rate just to maintain the status quo.

The unemployment rate in the US is about 9.5% and rising.  That’s a terrible sign for the economy because the economic effects of federal stimulus spending are fading fast.  A surge in imports during the second quarter is more troubling news.  Import growth during the second quarter was the largest jump in 26 years.  That tells us people are buying, but they’re being frugal.  You can’t blame them.  They’re trying to get the biggest bang for their bucks that they can find.

Suppose your best friend asked you for a $1000 loan so he could make his mortgage payment and avoid foreclosure on his home.  Within a few days, he comes to you again asking for another $1000 loan to avoid imminent foreclosure.  Being a prudent investor, you ask him what he did with the money you just loaned him.  He tells you that he was on his way to the bank to make the payment, and he stopped at Wal-Mart to buy some groceries.  Then he tells you that Wal-Mart had an eye-popping sale on HDTVs so he bought one with the money you gave him.

Would you loan your best friend another $1000 at that point?  Hopefully not.  That’s what’s happening now with the US economy.  President Obama wanted more than a trillion dollars for stimulus spending to avoid economic catastrophe, and we gave it to him.  Rather than investing it in ways that produce stimulative effects, he used it to pay off people and groups that supported his candidacy in 2008.  Now he wants us to give him more stimulus money.  Will we do it?  Maybe with the current Congress, but after November 2010, probably not.

We have already spent more than enough money to stimulate the economy, but it’s been wasted.  The economic data being released now and the unemployment statistics tell us clearly that our president gambled with our money and lost.  What should we do about it?  Let’s start by cleaning up the cesspool that our Congress has become.  Next, let’s put serious restrictions on any funds we appropriate so the president can’t continue paying off his friends with our money.  Finally, let’s show the president the door in 2012.

That raises another question.  Who should we elect in 2012?  I can think of two possibilities—Governor Chris Christie of New Jersey and Rep. Paul Ryan of Wisconsin.  In fact, I think they would make a great team.  These two men have experience and good sense.  More than that, they are not glory hounds who are just seeking the spotlight.  We can’t afford to gamble in 2012.  There will be a host of candidates to choose from in 2012, but these two men stand out in my mind as being especially well-qualified.

SnyderTalk Editorial: A Settlement Freeze in East Jerusalem is nothing but a Red Herring


Silwan (a.k.a. The City of David or Ir David) is not an ordinary place.  It’s the city that King David built south of Jebus, a city that he captured and renamed Jerusalem.  (See 1 Chronicles 11: 4-9.)  In Hebrew, it’s called Yerushalayim.  The City of David is across the street from The Temple Mount complex, and it’s part of what the worldly-wise and Palestinians refer to as “East Jerusalem”.

The City of David is land given to Israel by Yahweh (see “Yahweh’s Promises Concerning the Promised Land” under Pages in the column on the right), and it’s a very special place.  Pretending it isn’t won’t change anything, but it will provoke Yahweh.

Thumbing your nose at Yahweh is dangerous business.  Our God isn’t a politician or a diplomat.  He’s the Creator and the Sovereign of the universe, and He doesn’t look to the United States or any other country for support.  Israel’s leaders should seek Him.  In due course, they will, but I fear that it will be when they have no other choice.

This is how Zechariah described it:

“In that day Yahweh will defend the inhabitants of Jerusalem, and the one who is feeble among them in that day will be like David, and the house of David will be like God, like the angel of Yahweh before them.  And in that day I will set about to destroy all the nations that come against Jerusalem.  I will pour out on the house of David and on the inhabitants of Jerusalem, the Spirit of grace and of supplication, so that they will look on Me whom they have pierced; and they will mourn for Him, as one mourns for an only son, and they will weep bitterly over Him like the bitter weeping over a firstborn.  In that day there will be great mourning in Jerusalem, like the mourning of Hadadrimmon in the plain of Megiddo.” (Zechariah 12: 8-11)

On a recent trip to Israel, my wife and I visited the City of David and took a special tour.  The site was closed to tourists that day, so we were the only two visitors.  The archeologists were busily engaged in their work, and we were able to see and talk with them about important new discoveries.  As we were exploring a large, enclosed space, one of the archeologists gave us a recently unearthed pottery fragment.  It’s the handle to a pitcher that is dated to the time of King David, about 1000 B.C.  Below is a picture of that pottery fragment:

Don’t be deceived.  Palestinian demands that Israel stop all settlement activity in East Jerusalem is nothing but a red herring.  East Jerusalem includes more than the City of David.  It encompasses the Old City of Jerusalem, the Temple Mount, and the Mount of Olives.  I don’t need to tell you how important these places are to Yahweh and to the people of Israel.  The Palestinians’ stated goal is to destroy Israel—see “Palestinian and Hamas Charters” under Pages in the column on the right for details.  Everything they do is aimed at achieving that objective.  That’s why you have to take anything they say with a grain of salt.

Palestinians may be able to fool President Obama and the worldly-wise, but they’re as transparent as glass to Yahweh.  Their day is coming.  When it comes, they’ll be dealing with the Yahweh Sabaoth.  I like the way C.S. Lewis described it:

“When that happens, it is the end of the world. When the author walks on to the stage the play is over. God is going to invade, all right: but what is the good of saying you are on His side then, when you see the whole natural universe melting away like a dream and something else—something it never entered your mind to conceive—comes crashing in; something so beautiful to some of us and so terrible to others that none of us will have any choice left? For this time it will be God without disguise; something so overwhelming that it will strike either irresistible love or irresistible horror into every creature. It will be too late then to choose your side. There is no use saying you choose to lie down when it has become impossible to stand up. That will not be the time for choosing: it will be the time when we discover which side we really have chosen, whether we realised it before or not. Now, to-day, this moment, is our chance to choose the right side. God is holding back to give us that chance. It will not last forever. We must take it or leave it.” (Lewis, C. SnyderTalk Editorial: Give us the keys to the car.  You’ve proven that you can’t drive.


Democrats are poised to take a real shellacking at the polls.  There are many reasons for this.  Foremost among them is that people know President Obama took more than $1,000,000,000,000 of our money and used a large percentage of it to pay off associations, groups, and individuals who supported candidate Obama in 2008.  Why did he do it?

I’ve given that question a lot of thought, and there is only one explanation that makes any sense to me.  Before giving you my answer, I’ll briefly summarize what happened leading up to the economic breakdown in 2008.

It’s true that our economy was a wreck when President Obama took office.  It’s also true that President Bush (W) presided over a Congress with Republican majorities in the House and Senate for the first 6 of his 8 years in office, time that he could and should have used to deal with the issues that would cause the Great Recession.  Instead, Republicans spent money as though there would be no tomorrow and gave little or no attention to the deficit and debt problems they were perpetuating.

To be sure, Republicans deserve a lot of the blame for the economic collapse.  It doesn’t matter that President Clinton pushed for the legislation that caused the problem or that Democrats like Chris Dodd and Barney Frank capitalized on the legislation in every way they could.  President Bush could have vetoed the nonsensical bills that crossed his desk almost every day and taken a message about the looming disaster to the American people.  President Bush didn’t veto a single bill until after Democrats took control of Congress.  That’s an empirical fact that will forever remain a blemish on his record.

But that doesn’t answer the question.  Why did President Obama use our money to pay off his political supporters instead of stimulating the economy as he assured us he would?  As simple as this may sound, I believe he must have thought he could get away with it.  Nothing else makes any sense to me, and it’s consistent with the style of politics he learned in Chicago.  Take former Illinois Governor Rod Blagojevich, for example.  He brazenly tried to barter the Senate seat vacated by President-elect Obama as if it were his personal property.  Why?  He must have thought he could get away with it.  If there had been any doubt in his mind, he would have at least tried to be a little circumspect in his dealings, but he didn’t.  From his perspective, he was safe.

President Obama must suffer from the same delusion.  Like a drug-addicted lawyer who skims money from client accounts to pay for his habit thinking he’ll be able to return it before anyone finds out, President Obama must have believed the economy would turn around before mid-term elections or he would have been more careful—or using his word, more transparent.  Instead, he took more than a trillion dollars of our money and used a huge chunk of it to pay off teachers’ unions, auto workers’ unions, and liberal progressive groups of all stripes to name just a few.  He even used it to provide grants and contracts to his friends on the left.  I’m not speculating here.  That’s what the record shows.

President Obama must have known that if the economy didn’t show significant signs of improvement before the mid-term elections, he and the Democratic Party would take a beating at the polls.  He must have asked his advisors how much money it would take to jumpstart the economy.  He probably viewed the funds at his disposal above that amount as money he could use to pay political debts.  That’s the way things are done in Chicago.  “Why wouldn’t it work in Washington?” he must have thought.

Most of the time, that’s the way things work in Washington too, but this crisis was different.  The economic situation was bleaker than President Obama and his advisors realized, and they didn’t have enough slack to shower his supporters with our money.  Unfortunately, by the time they understood the reality, the payoffs had already been made.  President Obama must have thought he could get away with it but he was wrong, and he got enthusiastic support from his Democratic colleagues in the House and Senate.

There must be consequences, or we can expect the senseless waste of our hard-earned money to continue.  Rod Blagojevich is going to jail.  We need to tell President Obama and his compatriots, “Give us the keys to the car.  You’ve proven that you can’t drive.”  But we can’t stop there.  The people we elect have to know that they will be held accountable too, be they Republican or be they Democrat.

Climate Change Update

THIS WEEK by Ken Haapala, Executive Vice President, Science and Environmental Policy Project (SEPP)

For those concerned about the environmental impact of oil exploration and development, perhaps the biggest news are studies of the impact of the BP spill on the Gulf of Mexico. On August 19, the New York Times reported that a new study by the venerable Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute, being published in Science, indicates that the earlier NOAA studies of the disappearance of the oil plume were far too optimistic.  According to the Woods Hole study, the oil plume was not breaking down quickly and effects will remain indefinitely. This confirmed suspicions by other groups.

On August 24, the New York Times reported a new study by the Energy Biosciences Institute, a partnership led by the University of California Berkeley and the University of Illinois, stated that the oil plume is being depleted quickly by a previously undiscovered microorganism that appears closely related to Oceanospirillales.

Readers may recall that TWTW previously reported that the Gulf of Mexico is home to a great number of microorganisms that thrive in cold water (about 5°C) at oil seeps and that these microbes depend upon chemosynthesis rather than photosynthesis. The newly discovered microbe appears to be one such creature. Very importantly, it appears that the microbe is anaerobic—it does not consume oxygen. The oxygen levels are remaining high (59% inside the plume as compared with 67% outside the plume). Thus the feared dead zone from oxygen depletion is not occurring.

It should be noted that the Energy Biosciences Institute was created by a $500 Million, 10 year grant from BP for which Stephen Chu, now Secretary of Energy, was a grateful recipient. If the research holds, then this is another example that in science, it is the quality of the work, not the funding, that is important.

In what appears to be alarming news to the environmental industry, acting US Solicitor General Neal Katyal, representing the Tennessee Valley Authority, a federal agency, filed a brief with the US Supreme Court requesting it throw out a decision by the 2nd Court of Appeals permitting law suits brought by the State of Connecticut and other northeast states against utilities using coal to generate electricity. The entire situation is logically bazaar.

The Attorney General for Connecticut, backed by environmental groups and other northeastern states, is claiming that public utilities using coal to generate electricity are public nuisances. According to the article in the New York Times, the environmental industry thought it had a deal with the Obama administration to allow the law suits to proceed as a means of forcing Congress to accept some form of cap-and-trade. Now the environmental industry feels betrayed. Has a bit of logic and reason hit the administration?

The hot summer weather over Russia, and elsewhere, has broken. But the chorus of alarmists, particularly politicians, blaming the unusual weather events on global warming continues. Of course, some of the politicians, including Rep. Markey and Hillary Clinton, claim these events demonstrate “climate change” which government regulations such as cap-and-tax will be able to control.

The National Science Foundation announced “powerful new computer software” by the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR) called the Community Earth System Model (CESM) that others can use to make regional climate projections. If the models were well tested and validated to discern the difference between natural cause of climate change and human induced changes, then it would be a valuable addition to our understanding of climate change. However, based upon the announcements it appears that the software will do little more than intensify the errors of the past. Expanding the detail of models that have not been validated does not expand knowledge.

SnyderTalk Editorial: “You’ve got me,” President Obama said.


The government-run healthcare program (a.k.a. Obamacare) isn’t even operational, but three things are clear already:

(1)      It will not cut healthcare costs.

(2)      It will not improve the quality of care.

(3)      It will result in rationing of healthcare services.

That’s exactly what I said would happen back in January when President Obama shoved Obamacare down our throats, and my voice was one of many.  It’s now August, and we’re closing in on the mid-term elections.  Are the Democrats proud of their accomplishment?  Maybe, but if they are, they aren’t letting on.

It’s seems strange to me that members of Congress would defy the wishes of the American people and vote for a program that more than 60% of us opposed.  After they cast their votes, they likened Obamacare to the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and the Voting Rights Act of 1965, two pieces of legislation that didn’t enjoy widespread popularity at the time but were morally right and totally justified.  That was more a play on racial sensitivities than an endorsement of Obamacare.  President Obama and his supporters in Congress have played the race card so often that it’s becoming a cliché.

Representative Bart Stupak (D-MI) didn’t waste much time before announcing that he would not seek re-election.  That was a ruse.  He knew that he was going to take a shellacking at the polls, and he wanted to avoid the inevitable.  Congressman Stupak could have prevented the passage of Obamacare, but he chose instead to put President Obama’s interests ahead of the interests of the voters in his district and the American people.  Now every member of Congress who voted to pass Obamacare is running scared.

The Democratic Party is doing everything it can do to help Obamacare supporters, but polling data has convinced them that they are fighting an uphill battle.  The Party is telling it’s faithful to keep their claims about Obamacare “small” and “credible”.  The small part is easy, but the credible part isn’t.  They’re telling the Kool-Aid drinkers to promise to “improve the law”.  No problem there.  Nancy Pelosi said it best at the time: “We have to pass the bill so that you can find out what’s in it.”  Since they didn’t know what they were voting for, they knew there would be plenty of room for improvement.  They are telling Democrats to avoid policy discussions which they can’t win and to rely on antidotes, personal stories about people who have benefitted from Obamacare.  That’s a problem since those examples are as rare as the Hope Diamond.

Last but not least, the Democratic Party is telling members of Congress who voted for Obamacare to avoid saying anything about the colossal government-run program’s effect on costs and the deficit.  Keep in mind that President Obama said repeatedly that his program would accomplish 3 things:

(1)      It would improve healthcare.

(2)      It would cut healthcare costs.

(3)      It would reduce the deficit.

Those claims were patently absurd when President Obama made them.  I knew it; you knew it; and so did every member of Congress who voted for Obamacare.

Convincing members of Congress to put their careers in jeopardy to pass Obamacare elicited an 11th hour pep rally that was led by the president himself.  He told them that they should support his initiative enthusiastically because, and I’m quoting here, “The big difference between 2010 and 1994 is me.”  They took the bait and passed the legislation.

“You’ve got me,” President Obama said.  He was correct, and now it’s time to pay the fiddler.  Step forward Mr. President and see what you have wrought.

SnyderTalk Editorial: Thinking 2012—Total Energy Independence by 2020


The United States has been blessed with enough energy resources to run our factories, light our cities and homes, and feed our people and the people of the world, but we have not developed them the way we should have.  Instead, we have been cowered by liberal progressives who would rather sunbathe in luxury without unsightly drilling platforms on the horizon.  Most of those platforms are beyond the horizon, so it’s our way of life that they really loathe.

In 2008, the US imported almost 13,000,000 barrels of oil per day, or about 57% of our total oil consumption—click here for details.  Although our energy needs have been increasing rapidly, the US didn’t build a new refinery between 1998 and 2008—click here for details, even then over the strong objections of liberal progressives.  In 2008 alone, the US spent almost $500,000,000,000 on imported oil—click here for details.  That’s half a trillion dollars that we didn’t need to spend.  Our dependence on foreign oil is putting our economy and our national security at risk.  These things can’t continue.

Saying that the US is rich in energy resources is an understatement.  At today’s consumption levels, we have enough coal to meet our needs for the next 500 years—click here for details.  We have 22,450,000,000 barrels of proven oil reserves—click here for details, and we are finding new oil reserves all the time.  The US has 250 trillion cubic feet of proven natural gas reserves—click here for details.  We are finding new gas reserves daily, and we are discovering new ways to tap into hard-to-get gas deposits.  To put that in perspective, the US has more energy in our natural gas reserves than the entire Middle East has in oil reserves.  It’s disgraceful that we’re putting our economic security and our national security at risk to import strategic resources that we already have in abundance.

T. Boone Pickens has launched a campaign to reduce our dependence on foreign oil by developing our natural gas reserves.  His plan is called the Pickens Plan.  Pickens deserves our support, but we need to do more.  We must develop our coal, oil, AND natural gas reserves.  We also need to develop wind energy, solar energy, and hydrogen energy.  There is absolutely no excuse for the United States to import oil and gas from another nation.

We have already spent more than $1,000,000,000,000 on various stimulus programs.  That’s several times more than will be needed to fully develop all of our energy resources.  We have squandered our wealth to reward individuals and groups that supported President Obama in 2008 while our critical economic and security needs have gotten scant attention.

As we move toward the presidential election in 2012, keep in mind that a candidate who doesn’t make energy independence Job One does not deserve our support, and it won’t take a decade to get the job done.  There is no reason why the US can’t be totally energy independent by 2020, except the political will.  Absent that, we will have more of the same, and the futures of our children and grandchildren will continue to be at risk.

It’s been said, and it’s true, that we get the government we deserve.  Let’s show them that we deserve better than we’ve been getting.  It’s time for change, serious change, and it starts at the top.

His strategy has always been the same: to get man to question the commandments of our Creator. In the Garden of Eden he questioned, “Hath God said?” Today he asks the very same question.

Now, if we were in any other battle against any other adversary would you not agree that you would want to have a little intelligence about what our adversary is up to? I am sure that you would agree that we would go to any length to study every possible way to defeat the enemy. Well, the Bible is the only place that we will learn what our adversary is up to. Not only that but it provides the only strategy by which our adversary can be defeated. Even so, many believers make little effort to find out what the Bible really says. Most depend on professional theologians to tell them what it says – making eternal life and death decisions based on the interpretation of mere men.

We must put on the whole armor of God, that we may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil – and we cannot depend on others to do that for us. Let us be like the Bereans that we read about in the book of Acts. They searched the scriptures for themselves in order to determine if what they were being taught was correct.

SnyderTalk Editorial: The Obama administration is practicing a version of politics and government that most of us are not familiar with, but if you live in Chicago, it’s business as usual


The articles above point to a problem that has plagued the Obama administration since Day One.  They can’t or won’t distinguish between public and private funds.  They are anxious to help their friends and family financially, but they do it with our money.  I don’t fault anyone for wanting to help their friends and family, but I draw the line when they dig into my pocket to do it.  That’s not just wrong.  I think it’s illegal.  If it isn’t, it should be.

The Obama administration is practicing a version of politics and government that most of us are not familiar with, but if you live in Chicago, it’s business as usual.  Chicago’s government is well-known for its corrupt and illegal practices.  Take Former Illinois Governor Rod Blagojevich, for example.  He vehemently denies any wrongdoing even though there are tapes of him discussing things that any person with a smidgen of common sense knows are illegal.

The video below shows Blagojevich on Fox News Sunday explaining that what he did wasn’t illegal.  He admits that President Obama’s chief of staff, Rahm Emanuel, and Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid were doing exactly what he was doing, and in his warped universe, none of them did anything wrong.

President Obama learned Chicago-style politics in that sewer, and his administration is rife with Chicago thugs and operatives who think exactly the way Blagojevich thinks.  This isn’t my opinion.  The facts lead to that inescapable conclusion.  Blagojevich’s machismo is breathtaking.  He is so deluded that he thinks he still has career opportunities in politics—click here for details.  President Obama suffers from the same malady.

It really is time for change we can believe in.  I hope we get it in November.
