I’ve Just About had it with Facebook

Four times in the last month and a half, I received notifications from Facebook telling me that my post was “false news”. Each case is different, but in each case Facebook was wrong.

I have neither the time nor the desire to go into each of the four cases, but this one is a great example of the pathetic work done by Facebook and the arbitrariness of the process used by Facebook.

Because Facebook found me guilty of spreading false news, my Facebook group pages for His Name is Yahweh and SnyderTalk were issued a “Page Restriction”. I don’t know exactly what that means, and Facebook didn’t bother to explain the details. This is exactly what Facebook said:

Your Page has reduced distribution and other restrictions because of repeated sharing of false news. People will also be able to see if a Page has a history of sharing false news.

As I said, there were 4 cases. This one is illustrative:

1. I shared a CNN article titled “Greenland’s ice sheet has melted to a point of no return, according to new study”.
2. Facebook responded to my post by saying: Independent fact-checkers at Science Feedback say that information in a post shared by SnyderTalk is missing context and could mislead people. We’ve added a notice to the post.
3. This information was also provided by Facebook: Article by CNN exaggerates study’s implications for future Greenland ice loss with “point of no return” claim.
4. Finally, I was told that deleting the offending post would have no effect on my restriction.

This is what the Facebook “fact-checkers” failed to notice. At the top of the post in the section where I can say something, I provided the information below along with the CNN article. This is a verbatim quote of my comment:

I guess people today don’t understand why Greenland is called “Greenland”.

When Greenland was settled by Vikings in the late-900s AD, it was green. That was long before industrialization and long before man-made CO2 emissions were blamed for global warming.

“Liberal progressives” must believe we live in a static world.

Newsflash: The climate is always changing. It has always been changing. Humans didn’t make it happen, and humans can’t stop it from happening.

This is counter-intuitive, but melting glaciers reduce the salinity of sea water and slow ocean currents. That is a precursor to an Ice Age. Now is the time to prepare for cold weather. “Liberal progressives” won’t know it has happened until after it happens.

Anyone with a brain can see that I was explaining to my His Name is Yahweh and SnyderTalk Facebook groups that the CNN article was a gross exaggeration. To do that, I had to show my groups the article. So, Facebook restricted me for telling my Facebook groups exactly what Facebook told me.

I am forced to conclude that no one at Facebook actually read my post. All they saw was the CNN article. Facebook missed the most important part and restricted me. It was gross negligence on Facebook’s part.

As I said, on the notification I received from Facebook, I was told that removing the post would have no effect. I had been tried, convicted, and sentenced. There was no mention of any chance for an appeal. The matter was settled.

The arrogance and the ignorance of the people at Facebook are breathtaking.

• Fact 1: I don’t like Facebook. I use Facebook to share information. That’s it.
• Fact 2: Because of the things I do, I read a lot and I read widely. Sharing information on Facebook takes just seconds. That’s nothing compared with the time I spend doing research, reading, and writing.
• Fact 3: I don’t own stock in Facebook. I used to, but not anymore. I don’t want to own the stock of a company that I hope the federal government comes after with a sledge hammer.
• Fact 4: Facebook isn’t the arbiter of truth. To me, it looks as though the company is run by adolescent children with no discipline. That will eventually catch up with Facebook. It always does.
• Fact 5: I am hoping that some enterprising lawyer will see the opportunity to file a class action lawsuit against Facebook.  I am also hoping that the feds will impose fines on Facebook totaling in the billions of dollars.

If this kind of thing is happening to me, I know that it’s happening to lots of others. As I said, I don’t like Facebook, but I use it. Facebook is a public utility. It needs to be regulated as one.

For the Record

It is impossible to contact anyone at Facebook directly for any reason. I tried to contact the company so that I could complain about the “fact-checker” errors on my Facebook group posts. After a while, I decided that it was not worth my time.  As I said, I’ve just about had it with Facebook.

No company should be allowed to do what Facebook is doing with the company’s obviously flawed “fact-checker” process. The fact that anyone needs to tell Facebook about this problem is a serious problem in and of itself. As I said, it looks as though the company is run by adolescent children with no discipline.
