The United States is NOT a Democracy, by Design

The United States was blessed to have in one place at the same time some of the smartest men in the world.  They were not perfect men, far from it, but they were good men who were well ahead of their time.  They left us a legacy that we can be thankful for despite their shortcomings.

One of those men was the estimable Benjamin Franklin from Pennsylvania.  He said, “Democracy is two wolves and a lamb deciding what to have for dinner.  Liberty is a well-armed lamb.”

Human Nature is a Problem

Franklin understood human nature.  He knew, as did our other Founding Fathers, that humans are prone to lord it over others if they can and that they will lord it over others if they have the chance.

In a pure Democracy, the majority rules.  That means 50% of the population plus 1 can tell everybody else what to do.  Since government has enforcement powers, it can impose stiff penalties, including death, on those who decide to reject the majority opinion.

For our protection, our Constitution was carefully crafted by our Founding Fathers to provide checks and balances.  We have three branches of government: the executive, the legislative, and the judicial.  They are co-equal branches with distinct powers that overlap, by design.  Thus, there is a natural friction between the branches, particularly between the executive and the legislative branches, by design.

When there are disagreements between the legislative and executive branches, the judicial branch settles the matter, by design.

Even though we have a separation of powers in our Constitution by design, our Founding Fathers realized that citizens of the United States would need protections that are spelled out in the Constitution to protect their individual liberties.  They came up with the Bill of Rights to provide those protections.

Ours is not a perfect system.  It may not even be a good system, but it’s the best system of government on Earth.  As a nation, we’ve made lots of mistakes, but over time we’ve corrected most of them.

For example, when the Constitution was written, slaves were considered property.  The United States was not unique in that regard.  Slavery was acceptable almost everywhere in the world in the late-1700s.  Our Founding Fathers were grappling with the notion of slavery and trying to decide how our fledgling nation should deal with it.

Slavery was a divisive issue during the Constitutional Convention.  Eventually, it was resolved with the Three-Fifths Compromise.  The issue had to do with representation in Congress.  If slaves were counted as part of the population, northerner states feared that southern states with more slaves would have more seats in Congress than they deserved.  The Three-Fifths Compromise said that three out of five slaves would be counted as part of the population for purposes of representation in Congress.

The Three-Fifths Compromise was far from a perfect solution, and knowing what we know now, it wasn’t a good solution, either.  The question of slavery divided our country for about 60 years before it was decided once and for all by a civil war that cost the lives of more than 400,000 Americans.  The 13th Amendment was added to our Constitution to abolish slavery for good.  It says,

“Neither slavery nor involuntary servitude, except as a punishment for crime whereof the party shall have been duly convicted, shall exist within the United States, or any place subject to their jurisdiction.”

The Constitution worked.  A serious problem was solved at great cost to the American people, and slavery became a part of our regrettable past.

The Electoral College

Article II, Section 1 of our Constitution establishes the Electoral College.  It’s the formal body that elects the President and Vice President of the United States.  Without going into detail about changes in the Electoral College over time, I’ll simply say this.  When Donald Trump defeated Hillary Clinton in 2016, she got more popular votes than he did, but he won by a landslide in the Electoral College.

The vote in the Electoral College was 304 to 227.  It wasn’t even close.

Our Founding Fathers saw the potential for people moving to urban areas in large numbers over time, occupying a very small portion of our land area, and deciding how all of us should live.  In the United States, metropolitan areas account for about 2 percent of our land area, but they have about 80 percent of our population.

In the House, metropolitan areas rule, because seats in the House are determined by population.  But in the Senate, each state has 2 seats.  Wyoming, for example, has just 1 member in the House, but it has 2 members in the Senate.

Our Founding Fathers established the Electoral College to prevent urbanites from lording it over people who live in rural areas.  Everybody considering a run for the presidency knows how the Electoral College works.  No one can claim that he or she doesn’t know.

Even so, after President Trump defeated Hillary Clinton, Democrats openly declared that he was an illegitimate president, because he didn’t win the popular vote.  That set in motion an effort to impeach President Trump before he was inaugurated.  Everything we have witnessed since his election has been based on the Democrat belief that Donald Trump is an illegitimate president, because he didn’t win the popular vote.

Despite their comments about protecting the Constitution, Democrats in Congress are attacking a bedrock principle in our Constitution.  If they had their way, they would flush our Constitution down the toilet and rule by decree from U.S. cities.  That’s what the Electoral College is designed to prevent.

Democrat Deep State operative and former FBI agent Peter Strzok famously  said, “Hillary should win 100 million to zero.”  Democrats and their operatives in the Deep State are the kinds of people that Benjamin Franklin feared.  They are the reason why our Founding Fathers bequeathed us a republic and not a democracy.

Metropolitan areas in the United States are loaded with people like Peter Strzok.  Many of them broke the law in their pursuit of Donald Trump’s impeachment.  They need to be charged with the crimes they committed.  The sooner the better.

Democrats Violated President Trump’s Constitutional Rights

Democrats in the House violated President Trump’s constitutional rights in the Judiciary Committee and the Intelligence Committee.  The 6th Amendment to our Constitution states,

“In all criminal prosecutions, the accused shall enjoy the right to a speedy and public trial, by an impartial jury of the state and district wherein the crime shall have been committed, which district shall have been previously ascertained by law, and to be informed of the nature and cause of the accusation; to be confronted with the witnesses against him; to have compulsory process for obtaining witnesses in his favor, and to have the assistance of counsel for his defense.”

The president wasn’t allowed to call witnesses in the House Judiciary Committee or the House Intelligence Committee, and he wasn’t allowed to cross-examine the witnesses that were called.  That’s a serious violation of due process to which every U.S. citizen is entitled.

The House really did run a sham process.  It was a kangaroo court, the kind of thing that you see in banana republics and dictatorships.  If the Senate was a court of law, they would throw out the charges against President Trump on constitutional grounds alone.

That’s bad enough, but the 2 articles of impeachment against President Trump include no charges for crimes committed, because the president committed no crimes.  The House impeached President Trump for “abuse of power” and “obstruction of Congress”.  Those are two nebulous concepts that can mean anything or nothing.

In essence, Speaker Pelosi and Democrats in the House told the Senate to fill in the blanks.  Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell responded in no uncertain terms.  In essence, he said, “Forget about it.  That was your job, and you failed.”

According to our Constitution, the House brings charges in impeachment cases, and the Senate tries the cases based on the evidence presented in the House.  Nancy Pelosi, Adam Schiff, and Jerry Nadler abandoned constitutional requirements altogether in their rush to impeach President Trump.  As I said, if they could flush our Constitution down the toilet, they would.

It makes me angry every time I hear Pelosi, Schiff, or Nadler say that they protecting our Constitution, because in fact, they have been violating our Constitution for the past 3 years.  What they are doing is part of an orchestrated coup d’état.  It’s treason, and the punishment is death.

The Democrat Party Wants to Destroy Our Way of Life

The Democrat Party is trying to destroy our Constitution and our way of life.  They will use any trick in the book to achieve that objective.  Legality and constitutionality mean nothing to them.  Neither does the rule of law.  They think the ends justify the means, and in their world, President Trump has to go.  Since Democrats know that they can’t beat President Trump in an election, they’ve decided to impeach him instead.  As I said, they have been working on it since the day President Trump was elected.

Their dirty tricks won’t work.  The Senate will acquit President Trump, and he will be re-elected in 2020.

I wish the Senate had the courage to toss out the articles of impeachment against President Trump and openly declare for the permanent record that Democrats in the House violated the president’s constitutional rights.  That’s exactly what they did.  Next, the Senate should demand that the Justice Department open an investigation to determine which Democrats and their Deep State operatives are guilty of treason.  If they are convicted of treason, they should be executed.

We Have a Republic, Not a Democracy

Dr. James McHenry, a Maryland delegate to the Constitutional Convention, recorded in his notes that a lady asked Benjamin Franklin this question: “Well Doctor what have we got, a republic or a monarchy.”

Franklin replied, “A republic, if you can keep it.”

We have a republic, not a democracy.  Democrats can’t handle that.  They are madder now than they have been since we took away their slaves.

Democrats need to be taken to the woodshed.  Thanks to their impeachment push, that’s what will happen in the 2020 presidential election.  I hope that enough Americans are angry about what Democrats have done to take away from them control of the House, too.

Democrats are the worst enemy our republic faces.

“The glory which You have given Me I have given to them, that they may be one, just as We are one; I in them and You in Me, that they may be perfected in unity, so that the world may know that You sent Me, and loved them, even as You have loved Me. Father, I desire that they also, whom You have given Me, be with Me where I am, so that they may see My glory which You have given Me, for You loved Me before the foundation of the world.” (John 17: 22-24)
