What Should Our Prayer Be?

As the title suggests, The Book of Enoch was written by Enoch.  He was Methuselah’s father and Noah’s great-grandfather.

In chapter 83 of The Book of Enoch, Enoch explains that he had a dream in which Yahweh revealed to him that He planned to destroy the earth with a great flood.

The dream disturbed Enoch, and he awoke frightened.  His grandfather, Mahalalel, asked him what was wrong, so Enoch explained the dream to him.

Mahalalel urged Enoch to pray that Yahweh would save a remnant on the earth.  Chapter 84 is Enoch’s prayer.  Below is the last verse of that prayer:

“And now, my Adonai, wipe out from the earth the flesh that has provoked your anger, but the flesh of righteousness and uprightness establish as a seed-bearing plant forever. And do not hide your face from the prayer of your servant, O Yahweh.” (The Book of Enoch 84: 6)

Enoch is not an ordinary guy.  He is one of two people who never died.  The other one is Elijah.  Yahweh took them to heaven before they died.

A fair number of us can sense that something big is heading our way.  What should our prayer be?

Yahweh didn’t spare Sodom and Gomorrah even though Abraham urged Him to.  See Genesis 18.

Eventually, Yahweh agreed to spare Sodom and Gomorrah if 10 righteous men were found there.  As it turned out, there were not 10 righteous men in those cities, so Yahweh did what He told Abraham He would do.  He destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah.

The Bible story about Sodom and Gomorrah is not fiction.  It really happened.  Evidence of the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah remains to this day.  You can see it for yourself in the Arava in Israel.  Each time it floods, some of the brimstone is exposed.  That happens more frequently than you might think.

Below are two short videos.  The first video shows some of the remains of brimstone that did not burn completely.  As the brimstone that was rained down on Sodom and Gomorrah burned, it created an ash layer over the brimstone, deprived it of oxygen, and put it out.  Small fragments remain today.  I call them “brimstone globules”.  They litter the floor of the Arava near where Sodom and Gomorrah were.

I have several brimstone globules in my home.  I gather them when I’m in the Arava.  It’s like picking up pecans on the ground.

The Arava floor near Masada is loaded with them.  The ash layer is thick, but you can crush it easily and expose the brimstone inside.  Once you’ve done that, you can ignite the brimstone.  It burns so hot that if you ignite it in a stainless-steel spoon, it will melt a hole in the spoon.

I suggest that you ignite it on a flat rock if you have any brimstone to burn.  I just keep my brimstone globules as a reminder that Yahweh left us lots of evidence to see.  Once in a while, I’ll burn one.

In the Book of Wisdom that was written by King Solomon, he says that the brimstone that Yahweh rained down on Sodom and Gomorrah could not be extinguished by rain.  It was so hot that the water evaporated before it could put out the fire.

The second video shows the area where the brimstone globules can be found.

Israel is loaded with evidence that everything Yahweh said is true.  We need to pray, but what should our prayer be?

I’m tempted to ask Yahweh to come quickly.  I know what that means, but I am tempted to make that my prayer anyway.

Most New Testament translations quote the Messiah saying from the cross, “Eli Eli lama sabachthani?”  That’s Aramaic for “My El, My El, why have You forsaken Me?”

That’s a very poor translation.  He actually said, “My El, My El, why is this taking so long?”  Using today’s vernacular, it would be something like this: “My El, My El, let’s get this show on the road.”

I feel the same way, but that’s not my decision to make.

“The glory which You have given Me I have given to them, that they may be one, just as We are one; I in them and You in Me, that they may be perfected in unity, so that the world may know that You sent Me, and loved them, even as You have loved Me. Father, I desire that they also, whom You have given Me, be with Me where I am, so that they may see My glory which You have given Me, for You loved Me before the foundation of the world.” (John 17: 22-24)
