In Israel, the Political Battle is between Tel Aviv Everybody Else

See “Israeli PM Netanyahu Scrambles to Stabilize Governing Coalition After Lieberman Resignation”:

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is scrambling to shore up his governing coalition following the resignation of Defense Minister Avigdor Lieberman, the Hebrew daily Yediot Ahronot reported on Wednesday.

The Yisrael Beiteinu leader resigned on Wednesday in protest of Netanyahu’s “capitulation to terror” —  Lieberman’s description of the Gaza ceasefire reached after a surge of violence earlier this week that included the firing of more than 400 rockets into southern Israel.

The departure of Yisrael Beiteinu from the government leaves Netanyahu with a razor-thin one-seat majority in the Knesset.

Further complicating the situation, Education Minister Naftali Bennett’s HaBayit HaYehudi party issued an ultimatum to the prime minister, saying it would also leave the coalition if Bennett was not chosen to replace Lieberman as defense minister. A HaBayit HaYehudi withdrawal from the government would erase Netanyahu’s Knesset majority and make early elections almost certain.

Tel Aviv Won This Political Battle

In the Arab world, any sign of weakness is dangerous. That’s especially true in the Palestinian world.

What the world calls “Palestinians” is actually a hodgepodge of Arabs that no Arab country wants.

In Israel, there are also Israeli Arabs.  They are not “Palestinians”.  In Jerusalem where I spend most of my time, Israeli Arabs are quick to point that out.

The difference between Israeli Arabs and “Palestinians” is like night and day.

Hamas rules “Palestinians” in Gaza. It’s an offshoot of the Muslim Brotherhood. It’s a terrorist organization.

Avigdor Lieberman believes that Benyamin Netanyahu is showing weakness and that he is inviting serious trouble for the Israeli people.

Among the “intellectual elite” in Israel, primarily people who live in Tel Aviv, Lieberman is looked upon as a Neanderthal, a thoroughly dangerous man.

Israel’s population is roughly 8.4 million people. The Tel Aviv District (Gush Dan) has a population of roughly 3.5 million people. It accounts for roughly 42% of Israel’s population.

By comparison, the Jerusalem District has only about 1 million people.

In Israel, the political battle is between Tel Aviv and everybody else.

Think of Tel Aviv as New York City or Los Angeles in the U.S.  I’ll leave it at that for now.

Lieberman is Right

Lieberman is right. Netanyahu is wrong.  So are the people of Tel Aviv.

The people of Tel Aviv won this political battle. They made a serious mistake, but they don’t know it.

One day, they will.

Peace through weakness doesn’t work.  It has never worked.  That’s a lesson from history that we should have learned.

The Good News

Education Minister Naftali Bennett is very smart.  He is an entrepreneur who served in the IDF in the Sayeret Matkal and Maglan units.  Maglan is a commando brigade.  Bennett is a member of the Knesset for the HaBayit HaYehudi Party.

Bennett is on the right track.  He demanded that Netanyahu appoint him defense minister to replace Lieberman, or he will withdraw from Netanyahu’s ruling coalition, too, and bring it down.

I have great respect for two other Israeli government leaders:

  • Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Tzipi Hotovely. She’s a member of the Knesset for the Likud.
  • Minister of Justice Ayelet Shaked. She’s a member of the Knesset for the HaBayit HaYehudi Party.

Netanyahu will have to scramble to stitch together a ruling coalition.  Get ready for some interesting days ahead.

“The glory which You have given Me I have given to them, that they may be one, just as We are one; I in them and You in Me, that they may be perfected in unity, so that the world may know that You sent Me, and loved them, even as You have loved Me. Father, I desire that they also, whom You have given Me, be with Me where I am, so that they may see My glory which You have given Me, for You loved Me before the foundation of the world.” (John 17: 22-24)
