Space.com—The Great American Solar Eclipse of 2017 Is Happening Today:

One of the biggest astronomical events of the century is finally here: Today (Aug. 21), a total solar eclipse will cross the U.S. from Oregon to South Carolina, starting in Oregon at 12 p.m. EDT/9 a.m. PDT (1600 GMT).

To viewers inside the “path of totality,” the moon will completely cover the sun, darkening the sky and revealing the star’s hidden atmosphere. This cloak of darkness has been known to make plants and animals behave strangely; it also creates a “360-degree sunset,” in which the horizon in every direction will glow as if twilight has arrived early. It’s an event that transcends science and stargazing, and it is quite simply amazing.

Visit the Space.com home page starting at 12 p.m. EDT (1600 GMT) to watch the solar eclipse live, courtesy of NASA. [Total Solar Eclipse 2017: When, Where and How to See It (Safely)]

Everyone in North America will be able to see at least a partial solar eclipse (assuming clouds don’t block your view), so make sure you get outside and see this incredible event. Check NASA’s interactive map to find out exactly when the eclipse will be visible in your area.

Remember to protect your eyes during the eclipse — don’t look directly at the sun without a solar filter or solar glasses. It is safe to remove your glasses only when the disk of the sun is completely obscured by the moon. Space.com will carry live updates as the eclipse crosses the country, as well as webcasts of the eclipse from throughout the path of totality.

SnyderTalk Comment:

The information in the lead headline will be helpful to those of you who will have the opportunity to watch the eclipse.  Since it’s passing directly over my house, I’ll take video clips of it, put them together, and post it on YouTube.

As the article says, if you are directly under the eclipse, which we are, during the total eclipse portion of the eclipse you don’t need protective glasses to watch it, and you can take videos and still shots without fear of damaging your eyes or your cameras.

Where we are, the total eclipse portion of the eclipse begins at 02:37:50 p.m. and ends at 02:40:24 p.m.  That means I’ll have about 2 minutes and 34 seconds to take the pictures I need.  I’ll take video shots with a 4K camcorder and still shots with a 21 mp camera.

I’m not a professional photographer, but if the sky is clear, I should be able to capture a lot of excellent images.

It will take me awhile to prepare the video for YouTube because I finally decided to do a little video editing.  I bought Corel video editing software and plan to make good use of it.  As you know, learning to use software is like learning a foreign language.  I plan to take my time and do it right.

I’ll post a short unedited video clip and some still images on Facebook later today.

When you buy a 4K camcorder, you’ll discover that you need a computer that is capable of handling very large files quickly.  I decided to play it safe, so I bought a new laptop to replace my aging one.  It has 12 gb of RAM and the latest, fastest Intel processor.  It also has a 4K screen, and everything in it is made to deal with really big files.

My laptop is now my best computer by far.

Since I have a 55 inch 4K television in the room where I prepare SnyderTalk, write books, etc., etc., etc., and a leather La-Z-Boy to sit in while I watch whatever I watch, I decided to set up the laptop as my main computer and use the 55 inch 4K television as my computer monitor.  I now write in style and comfort.

Sitting in a desk chair for long periods of time hurts my back.  That’s what I have been doing and suffering because of it, but not anymore.  I am now 67 years old, so little things mean a lot.  Writing while I’m reclining in my La-Z-Boy solved my back problem.

There aren’t enough good 4K videos of places in Israel on YouTube.  I’ll start helping to solve that problem soon.  You can watch my videos by going to YouTube.

I haven’t been big on video editing up to now, but I will be in the future.  My 4K video of the solar eclipse will be good practice.  Since practice makes perfect, my videos should improve over time.

“The glory which You have given Me I have given to them, that they may be one, just as We are one; I in them and You in Me, that they may be perfected in unity, so that the world may know that You sent Me, and loved them, even as You have loved Me. Father, I desire that they also, whom You have given Me, be with Me where I am, so that they may see My glory which You have given Me, for You loved Me before the foundation of the world.” (John 17: 22-24)
