SnyderTalk Update:

See “Pope Francis preaches tolerance at Mass in Cairo”:

Pope Francis sent a message of tolerance and co-existence Saturday in a Mass at a Cairo stadium before concluding his two-day trip to Egypt.

The visit was designed to forge Muslim-Christian brotherhood and show solidarity with the country’s persecuted Coptic Christian minority.

We can safely say that Pope Francis is no Elijah.

When a man professes to speak for Yahweh, he had better get it right.

Crux—Will Francis follow Benedict or Obama when he speaks to Muslims in Egypt?:

Pope Francis must choose how he addresses the Muslim community when he visits Egypt this week. He has two models: Former U.S. President Barack Obama and former Pope Benedict XVI. When a newly-elected Obama decided to address the “Muslim world” from Cairo in 2009, he insisted that Islam is a “religion of peace,” corrupted by a small few, and that there is nothing particularly Islamic about the violence committed by those who claim to be acting in the name of the Islam. The alternative approach was taken by Benedict in his 2006 Regensburg address, where he advanced the argument that how we understand God Himself determines how we understand what He might command.

When Pope Francis travels to Egypt this Friday and Saturday, what will he say about Islam? Will it be Benedict XVI at Regensburg, or Barack Obama at Cairo?

The Holy Father arrives just weeks after ISIS attempted to assassinate Pope Tawadros II, the most senior Christian pastor in Egypt, head of the Coptic Orthodox Church. ISIS did not get Tawadros, but killed dozens in their two Palm Sunday bombings.

The beleaguered Coptic Christians – both the Oriental Orthodox majority and the small Catholic minority – will appreciate the solidarity shown by the visit of Pope Francis, who will be joined by Bartholomew, Patriarch of Constantinople.

The three of them standing together – Francis, Bartholomew and Tawadros – will be a powerful sign not only of Christian unity, but also of Christian solidarity in the face of Islamist aggression.

The trip to Egypt is not about powerful gestures alone. Francis is the visiting the Al-Azhar mosque and university, the premier centre of Sunni Islamic scholarship, for an international peace conference. It is sometimes likened to the “Vatican” of the Sunni world. One doesn’t visit such a place only to be photographed; one comes to say something substantial.

SnyderTalk Comment:

This is important.  What will the so-called “holy father” tell his Muslim audience?

I know what Elijah would have told them:

“‘How long will you hesitate between two opinions? If Yahweh is Elohim, follow Him; but if Ba’al, follow him.’ But the people did not answer him a word.” (1 Kings 18: 21)

This is a great opportunity for the pope to do his job.  As we like to say down South, it’s time for him to put up or shut up.

The pope may not know this, but he is being tested by Yahweh.  What he says and does on that fateful day will matter a lot, maybe much more than he realizes.

On Mount Carmel that day, Yahweh demonstrated His awesome power to a skeptical audience.  When they saw it, they screamed,

“Yahweh, He is Elohim; Yahweh, He is Elohim.” (1 Kings 18: 39)

Stay tuned.  More is sure to follow.

Below is a video that I took on Mount Carmel at the very site where Elijah confronted the prophets of Ba’al.

Below is another video.  It is about what happened on Mount Carmel:

Important Facts

Yahweh’s Name is not Jehovah or Yehovah, and His title is Elohim, not God.

“If My people who are called by My Name humble themselves and pray and seek My face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, will forgive their sin and will heal their land.” (2 Chronicles 7: 14)

Change that Yahweh calls “good” begins in the hearts of believers—people who are recognizable because they are different.

We are different because we belong to Him and are called by His Name.  We are Yahweh’s people, His followers.

“The glory which You have given Me I have given to them, that they may be one, just as We are one; I in them and You in Me, that they may be perfected in unity, so that the world may know that You sent Me, and loved them, even as You have loved Me. Father, I desire that they also, whom You have given Me, be with Me where I am, so that they may see My glory which You have given Me, for You loved Me before the foundation of the world.” (John 17: 22-24)
