Arthur Herman—How Trump’s Syria Missile Strike Could Transform the Middle East:

There’s an emerging Israeli–Sunni alliance against the Damascus–Tehran axis, and the U.S. needs to lead it.

Call it the Tomahawk strike heard ’round the world, not just in Washington and Damascus and Moscow, but in every capital in the Middle East.

By ordering the strike on Al Shayrat Airfield, from which Bashar al-Assad had launched a brutal chemical-weapons attack on his own people just days earlier, President Trump put the U.S. squarely back in the game of Middle East politics. But without further action, it will have been for naught; what must come next is a new regional strategy for the U.S. that is very different from the one adopted by President Obama — one that backs up diplomatic coalition-building with U.S. military strength.

In 1990–91, President George H. W. Bush used such a strategy to drive Saddam Hussein out of Kuwait during Operation Desert Storm. Today, the U.S. is once again perfectly positioned to bring together the region’s leading Sunni powers, and Israel, in an alliance against Iran and its Shia allies, who are the real geopolitical threat in Syria.

Who would be part of this alliance? Israel and Saudi Arabia, the region’s most powerful Sunni state, have been drawing closer for the past decade, united by their shared interest in counteracting Iranian regional aggression, as have the other majority-Sunni Gulf states. Egypt, Jordan, Turkey, and Oman could also become strong strategic partners in a U.S.-led coalition designed to thwart Iran’s ongoing efforts to trigger a regional Shia uprising from Syria and/or Yemen.

This new alliance would have two prongs, and two aims.

The first would be to permanently end Tehran’s designs on becoming a regional hegemon, especially in the eastern Mediterranean, where it is propping up the Assad regime in Syria and sponsoring terrorist groups such as Hamas and Hezbollah in Lebanon.

SnyderTalk Comment:

After 8 long years of being allowed to run roughshod in the Middle East, Iran and countries supporting the terrorist, Islamist state (Russia in particular) have sunk in their claws.  That can be reversed, but it won’t be easy.

Iran is hell-bent on destruction.  Judging by the mullahs’ willingness to order others to die for their cause, destruction they will get.

Saving face is critical in the Islamist world.  When their reputations are on the line, the mullahs in Tehran will sacrifice as many people as necessary to achieve their goals without giving it a second thought.  In their world, human lives are a small price to pay.

Theirs is a culture of death.  Western minds can’t comprehend it.  Most refuse to believe it, but it’s real.

Fasten your seatbelts.  It’s going to be a rough ride.  Iran has exported enough radical Islamists to Europe to change the European complexion.  They came in as “refugees”, but they are Trojan horses.  Thanks to Obama, the U.S. has its share of “refugees”, too.

The importance of preventing Iran from getting nuclear weapons will become evident in the days ahead.  Thanks to Obama, that’s not going to be easy, either.

See “The Russian and Iranian ties that the U.S. can’t seem to break”.  Ironically, Russia is a target for Islamists as well.  That will become obvious to everyone in due course.

Switching Gears—but only Slightly

See “PUTIN’S WARNING – Now Russia tells the US ‘if you want a war you will get one EVERYWHERE’”.  That was in October 2016 just days before the election.  According to the article,

Moscow military experts have said Vladimir Putin will not back down amid escalating tensions between the global superpowers, blasting the White House’s “aggressiveness”.

US Vice President Biden revealed last weekend that Washington will be launching an attack on the Russian government’s emails.

But Kremlin military chief Lt Gen Yevgeny Buzhinsky described the provocative action as “full-scale confrontation”.

The retired general added: “Of course there is a reaction. As far as Russia sees it, as Putin sees it, it is full-scale confrontation on all fronts. If you want a confrontation, you’ll get one.”

“But it won’t be a confrontation that doesn’t harm the interests of the United States. You want a confrontation, you’ll get one everywhere.”

Shortly before President Trump was elected, a lot was going on that the mainstream media in the U.S. didn’t tell us about and/or didn’t want us to know.  Putin had paralyzed Barack Obama.  Our president was no match for him.

At that time, European leaders were pushing the U.S. to step up sanctions against Russia, but to no avail.  Obama was afraid to do anything that could be regarded as antagonistic toward Russia because of the way he thought Putin might respond.  As a result, the Kremlin leader did just about anything he wanted to do with impunity.  Thanks to Obama, it has been that way for the last 8 years.

Now, less than 100 days after President Trump’s election, things have changed dramatically.  See “Boris Johnson says ‘game has changed’ as G7 leaders discuss new sanctions against Russia”.

A meeting of G-7 foreign ministers are discussing new sanctions on Syrian and Russian military figures, Boris Johnson has confirmed.

The Foreign Secretary said the “game has changed” ahead of a meeting with his counterparts in Italy, where ministers will demand that Vladimir Putin remove his troops from Syria and drop his backing for the Syrian president.

As I said earlier, “The president [Trump] didn’t ask Russia for permission to launch the attack [against Syria]. He told them it was coming so they could remove their personnel.  Vladimir Putin got the message loud and clear.”

This was the message: President Trump is not Barack Obama.  There is a new sheriff in town.

“Liberal progressives” are so upset about alleged Russian involvement in the 2016 presidential election because Russia has been their greatest fear for a long time.  They can’t help but believe that Putin wanted Donald Trump to win the election because they were afraid of Hillary Clinton, the infamous Russia Reset Lady.  That’s ridiculous.

None of the facts line up behind the “liberal progressive” storyline.  That’s becoming clear to everyone, especially to Vladimir Putin.

“If My people who are called by My Name humble themselves and pray and seek My face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, will forgive their sin and will heal their land.” (2 Chronicles 7: 14)

Change that Yahweh calls “good” begins in the hearts of believers—people who are recognizable because they are different.

We are different because we belong to Him and are called by His Name.  We are Yahweh’s people, His followers.

“The glory which You have given Me I have given to them, that they may be one, just as We are one; I in them and You in Me, that they may be perfected in unity, so that the world may know that You sent Me, and loved them, even as You have loved Me. Father, I desire that they also, whom You have given Me, be with Me where I am, so that they may see My glory which You have given Me, for You loved Me before the foundation of the world.” (John 17: 22-24)
