Burak Bekdil—Turkey: “A Great Muslim Democracy”?:
Can there be democracies and democracies with religious prefixes? Is the United States a democracy or a Christian democracy? Is Israel a democracy or a Jewish democracy? Is Japan a democracy or a Shinto democracy?
In a 2010 interview with the Italian daily, Corriere della Sera, U.S. President Barack Obama referred to Turkey as a “great Muslim democracy.” In the same interview, he said that: “The U.S. always expressed the opinion that it would be wise to accept Turkey into the European Union.” All that was music to Turkish ears. But in reality, the president of the United States was suggesting to Europe’s rich club of nations that it must admit as full member not a democracy but a “Muslim democracy.” Obama did not understand that Turkey could never join the EU before it has fully transformed from being a Muslim democracy into a democracy.
In later years, though, Obama would painfully understand the difference between a democracy and a Muslim democracy. Now, in the words of James Jeffrey, a former Obama administration ambassador to Ankara, “You have to deal with the Turkey you have, rather than the one you’d like to have.”
Obama’s reference to Turkey aimed to please the political elite in Ankara. Soon after his 2008 election, Obama began to cultivate a private relationship with President Recep Tayyip Erdogan (who was then Prime Minister). In a 2012 Time interview, Obama named Erdogan as one of the five world leaders with whom he had the strongest bonds. In 2011, Tom Donilon, the president’s former national security advisor, said that Obama regarded Erdogan as “a man of principle, and also a man of action.”
Things look different today. “We basically have turned a blind eye to Erdogan’s drive towards an authoritarian, one-man system of rule in Turkey,” said Eric Edelman, who was U.S. ambassador to Ankara from 2003 to 2005. Obama persistently lived in this make-believe world until very recently. Jeffrey Goldberg wrote in The Atlantic‘s April 2016 issue:
“Early on, Obama saw Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, the president of Turkey, as the sort of moderate Muslim leader who would bridge the divide between East and West … But Obama now considers him a failure and an authoritarian…”

It took Obama almost 8 years to figure out that Turkish President Erdoğan is a duplicitous, dangerous, unreliable ally. Like those radical Muslims/Islamists that Obama refuses to name, Erdoğan is hell-bent of destruction.
In 2010, Erdoğan revealed his hand to the world with the MV Mavi Marmara incident that he authorized. It couldn’t have happened without his full support, but Obama didn’t get it because it didn’t jive with his preconceived notions.
Back then, Erdoğan was portraying himself to Muslims in the Middle East as the liberator of Hamas in Gaza. For Erdoğan, it was a step in the direction of reestablishing the Ottoman Empire with him at the helm.
The Israeli navy foiled Erdoğan’s plan by stopping the ship dead in its tracks. The Mavi Marmara incident soured relations between Turkey and Israel and gave Obama an opportunity to play peacemaker. Thanks to Obama, Israel ended up paying Turkey $20 million and apologizing supposedly to settle the matter, but with Erdoğan in charge, nothing is settled.
Erdoğan is like Hitler in that regard. A deal with him isn’t really a deal. It’s nothing more than a temporary diversion from his plan. It’s impossible to understand what Erdoğan is up to unless you see things in this context. He wants to reestablish Turkish supremacy in the Middle East.
Hillary Clinton was at Obama’s side working with him while he stabbed Israel in the back. She supported every move he made.
Hillary’s record of failure as the United States’ top diplomat is the stuff of legend, but she is presenting herself to the American public as the person best qualified to be the next commander-in-chief. People have to ignore mountains of hard evidence against Hillary to support her.
That’s why ordinary Americans will be complicit if Hillary is elected president. I suspect that most of them are ignorant about the facts, but that doesn’t matter because the facts are painfully obvious.

Sukkot: The Festival of Tabernacles or the Feast of Booths
Leviticus 23: 33-44:
33 Again Yahweh spoke to Moses, saying, 34 “Speak to the sons of Israel, saying, ‘On the fifteenth of this seventh month is the Feast of Booths for seven days to Yahweh. 35 On the first day is a holy convocation; you shall do no laborious work of any kind. 36 For seven days you shall present an offering by fire to Yahweh. On the eighth day you shall have a holy convocation and present an offering by fire to Yahweh; it is an assembly. You shall do no laborious work.
37 These are the appointed times of Yahweh which you shall proclaim as holy convocations, to present offerings by fire to Yahweh—burnt offerings and grain offerings, sacrifices and drink offerings, each day’s matter on its own day—38 besides those of the Sabbaths of Yahweh, and besides your gifts and besides all your votive and freewill offerings, which you give to Yahweh.
39 On exactly the fifteenth day of the seventh month, when you have gathered in the crops of the land, you shall celebrate the feast of Yahweh for seven days, with a rest on the first day and a rest on the eighth day. 40 Now on the first day you shall take for yourselves the foliage of beautiful trees, palm branches and boughs of leafy trees and willows of the brook, and you shall rejoice before Yahweh your Elohim for seven days. 41 You shall thus celebrate it as a feast to Yahweh for seven days in the year. It shall be a perpetual statute throughout your generations; you shall celebrate it in the seventh month. 42 You shall live in booths for seven days; all the native-born in Israel shall live in booths, 43 so that your generations may know that I had the sons of Israel live in booths when I brought them out from the land of Egypt. I am Yahweh your Elohim.’” 44 So Moses declared to the sons of Israel the appointed times of Yahweh.
Zechariah 14: 1-21
1 Behold, a day is coming for Yahweh when the spoil taken from you will be divided among you. 2 For I will gather all the nations against Jerusalem to battle, and the city will be captured, the houses plundered, the women ravished and half of the city exiled, but the rest of the people will not be cut off from the city. 3 Then Yahweh will go forth and fight against those nations, as when He fights on a day of battle. 4 In that day His feet will stand on the Mount of Olives, which is in front of Jerusalem on the east; and the Mount of Olives will be split in its middle from east to west by a very large valley, so that half of the mountain will move toward the north and the other half toward the south. 5 You will flee by the valley of My mountains, for the valley of the mountains will reach to Azel; yes, you will flee just as you fled before the earthquake in the days of Uzziah king of Judah. Then Yahweh, my Elohim, will come, and all the holy ones with Him!
6 In that day there will be no light; the luminaries will dwindle. 7 For it will be a unique day which is known to Yahweh, neither day nor night, but it will come about that at evening time there will be light.
8 And in that day living waters will flow out of Jerusalem, half of them toward the eastern sea and the other half toward the western sea; it will be in summer as well as in winter.
9 And Yahweh will be king over all the earth; in that day Yahweh will be the only one, and His Name the only one.
10 All the land will be changed into a plain from Geba to Rimmon south of Jerusalem; but Jerusalem will rise and remain on its site from Benjamin’s Gate as far as the place of the First Gate to the Corner Gate, and from the Tower of Hananel to the king’s wine presses. 11 People will live in it, and there will no longer be a curse, for Jerusalem will dwell in security.
12 Now this will be the plague with which Yahweh will strike all the peoples who have gone to war against Jerusalem; their flesh will rot while they stand on their feet, and their eyes will rot in their sockets, and their tongue will rot in their mouth. 13 It will come about in that day that a great panic from Yahweh will fall on them; and they will seize one another’s hand, and the hand of one will be lifted against the hand of another. 14 Judah also will fight at Jerusalem; and the wealth of all the surrounding nations will be gathered, gold and silver and garments in great abundance. 15 So also like this plague will be the plague on the horse, the mule, the camel, the donkey and all the cattle that will be in those camps.
16 Then it will come about that any who are left of all the nations that went against Jerusalem will go up from year to year to worship the King, Yahweh Sabaoth, and to celebrate Sukkot. 17 And it will be that whichever of the families of the earth does not go up to Jerusalem to worship the King, Yahweh Sabaoth, there will be no rain on them. 18 If the family of Egypt does not go up or enter, then no rain will fall on them; it will be the plague with which Yahweh smites the nations who do not go up to celebrate Sukkot. 19 This will be the punishment of Egypt, and the punishment of all the nations who do not go up to celebrate Sukkot.
20 In that day there will be inscribed on the bells of the horses, “Holy to Yahweh.” And the cooking pots in Yahweh’s house will be like the bowls before the altar. 21 Every cooking pot in Jerusalem and in Judah will be holy to Yahweh Sabaoth; and all who sacrifice will come and take of them and boil in them. And there will no longer be a Canaanite in the house of Yahweh Sabaoth in that day.
