ISIS’s Strategy for Destroying the West is Changing
Jonathan Spyer published an interesting piece the other day titled “Islamic State Shifts Strategy”:
ISIS’s pretensions to statehood are receding as it loses ground, but the organization is anything but defeated as a recent string of mass terror attacks shows.
The latest wave of bombings by Islamic State confirm a pattern long observed. As it continues to lose ground in its heartland and its “provinces,” so the organization turns back to an intensified focus on international terrorism. This is
in line with previous experience of international Salafi-jihadi organizations.
Two points need to be noted. First, considerable past experience shows that the destruction of the physical holdings of Salafi-jihadi groups does not mean their eclipse. Second, and more importantly, Salafi-jihadi networks are today part of a broader process – the revival and flourishing of political Islam. To try to understand them otherwise is to misunderstand them. The patterns of survival of earlier networks confirm this.
This thing is far from over. In fact, it’s just getting started.
In spite of setbacks in the Middle East, throughout the world ISIS is making inroads. Behind Israel, Europe and the U.S. are primary targets for ISIS. Lone wolf assailants complicate things for governments, especially for government officials who have not found the courage to come to grips with reality.
France stands out in my mind as the epitome of foolishness where ISIS is concerned. They still don’t get it. Following each murderous assault, we hear the same worn-out mantra. We heard it again in the wake of the mindless slaughter of 84 innocent people in Nice a few days ago: we will never forget.
French officials must have Alzheimer’s disease, because they always forget—at least they have forgotten up to now.
The time for talk is over. Pithy phrases are not good substitutes for effective strategies. It’s time to fish or cut bait.
See “France: The Coming Civil War”. People in France who understand what’s taking place are losing patience with government leaders who act like they don’t have a clue. After the Brexit vote, Great Britain is on the way out of the European quagmire. Italy is moving in that direction and France may not be far behind.
See “Could Italy Bring Down the Euro?”. Idiotic fiscal and monetary policies part of the problem. European foreign policies are even worse.
One-by-one, countries in Europe are sending a message: we’ve had it. If European officials don’t come around soon, they will oversee the dissolution of Europe.
We have a similar problem in the U.S. I think Donald Trump will beat Hillary Clinton by a huge margin in November. In large part, he will owe his victory to her record of appeasement where Islamists are concerned. She’s in bed with them—always has been. She can’t run away from her dismal record.
By the time the election rolls around, most Americans will know that a vote for Hillary is a vote for the failed policies that got us into this mess.
See “Brazilian extremist group uses Telegram to pledge allegiance to ISIS ahead of Olympics”. It’s morphing and it’s growing. Get ready. It’s coming.

“The glory which You have given Me I have given to them, that they may be one, just as We are one; I in them and You in Me, that they may be perfected in unity, so that the world may know that You sent Me, and loved them, even as You have loved Me. Father, I desire that they also, whom You have given Me, be with Me where I am, so that they may see My glory which You have given Me, for You loved Me before the foundation of the world.” (John 17: 22-24)
