“Therefore behold, I am going to make them know—this time I will make them know My power and My might; and they shall know that My Name is Yahweh.” (Jeremiah 16: 21)
We will Rue the Day the Turkish Coup Failed
On July 20, 1944, Operation Valkyrie failed. It was an attempt to assassinate Adolf Hitler and close the book on World War II.
The war pressed on despite Germany being ruled by a drug addicted, maniacal lunatic. Nine months and millions of deaths later, Hitler did what the Valkyrie plotters couldn’t. On April 30, 1945 while hiding out in a bunker built for him in Berlin, he took cyanide and shot himself in the temple.
Hitler was determined not to suffer the fate of his comrade in arms, Italy’s fascist dictator Benito Mussolini. The Italians captured and killed Mussolini, and then they hung him from steel girders at a gas station in Milan.
Looking back, it’s easy to imagine how much better off the world would have been if the Valkyrie plotters had succeeded. In the years to come, we will look back on the attempted Turkish coup and imagine how many lives would have been saved if it had succeeded.
News reports from around the world tell the tale:

Turkey’s president, Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, has promised swift retribution. Hitler did the same thing following Operation Valkyrie. More than 7,000 people were arrested by the Gestapo. Some of them were shot. Others were hung with piano wire, and movies of their torture were taken so that Hitler could watch and rejoice.
Like Hitler, Erdoğan didn’t rise to power democratically. At first he was elected, but for the past several years, he has been arresting and jailing people who oppose him and moving Turkey toward a Hitleresque dictatorship. Along the way, he has been promoting Islamism in Turkey and around the world, trying to reestablish the Ottoman Empire with him as sultan, and exerting undue influence in Europe and the U.S.
Now, Erdoğan is an Islamist leader with street creds and battle scars. His role as we move forward isn’t perfectly clear, but you can count on this: he feels emboldened thanks to the failed coup. I think he will ramp up his efforts to advance his Islamist agenda.
The whole world will rue the day that the coup attempt in Turkey failed. As King Solomon said, “That which has been is that which will be, and that which has been done is that which will be done. So there is nothing new under the sun.” (Ecclesiastes 1:9)
Israelis should watch out. They are in Erdoğan’s crosshairs.

“The glory which You have given Me I have given to them, that they may be one, just as We are one; I in them and You in Me, that they may be perfected in unity, so that the world may know that You sent Me, and loved them, even as You have loved Me. Father, I desire that they also, whom You have given Me, be with Me where I am, so that they may see My glory which You have given Me, for You loved Me before the foundation of the world.” (John 17: 22-24)
