NBC News—Friend Who Told FBI About Orlando Shooter Omar Mateen Saw a ‘Red Flag’:
Omar Mateen didn’t always fit the profile of a would-be radicalized killer, a friend told NBC News.
In 2014, American-born Mateen was remarried to a second wife and had a new son — and his friend, Mohammad Malik, had never heard him express extremist views or say anything homophobic.
But after a young man who went to their Florida mosque was killed in a suicide bombing in Syria that year, one thing did trouble Malik: Mateen said he was listening to recordings of Anwar al-Awlaki, the radical Islamic cleric killed by a U.S. drone strike in Yemen three years earlier. The suicide bomber, Moner Mohammad Abu-Salha, had said in videos before he was killed that al-Awlaki inspired him.
“It threw up a red flag for me,” Malik told NBC News on Tuesday. “I asked him what he thought of them and he said they were very powerful, which raised a red flag even more for me.”

In about 500 B.C. Sun Tzu, a Chinese general and philosopher, wrote what I think is the best strategy book of all time: The Art of War.
This is one of his most important principles: “It is said that if you know your enemies and know yourself, you will not be imperiled in a hundred battles; if you do not know your enemies but do know yourself, you will win one and lose one; if you do not know your enemies nor yourself, you will be imperiled in every single battle.”
Based on what I see, as a group I believe that our political leaders in the White House and Congress don’t know either our enemy or themselves.
The United States that helped win World Wars I and II is a shell of its former self. Our national debt and unfunded liabilities together make us not just the world’s leading debtor nation, but a bankrupt nation. We are morally bankrupt, too.
The world is waking up to reality. Islamists, in particular, see our weakness as an opportunity.
They are right. We are weak, but we don’t know it. While they seek to destroy us, we open our arms to them and ridicule those among us who warn about the dangers we face.
Military might alone is not enough to win a war. That’s a lesson from history that we have forgotten.
The U.S. today reminds me of Great Britain 300 years ago. At that time, they were the world’s leading superpower, but we beat them in the Revolutionary War. We can be beaten, too.
Things can change, but before they do, the people of America will have to accept the truth and do something about it. Will we?
I hope so, but I have doubts.
