The Atlantic—Obama’s Last Guantanamo Pitch to Congress:

In his first week as president, Barack Obama ordered his new administration to close Guantanamo Bay, the prison whose operation he once described as a “a sad chapter in history.” Now, with a few months left in office, Obama is making one of his final attempts to convince Congress to close the book on the facility for good.

“For many years, it’s been clear that the detention facility at Guantanamo Bay does not advance our national security,” Obama said Tuesday in remarks from the White House. “It undermines it.”

Obama on Tuesday sent Congress a plan outlining the closure of the prison in Cuba, established in January 2002 to house suspected foreign terrorists detained in the war on terrorism. According to a New York Times database, there are 91 detainees remaining at Guantanamo. Of the roughly 780 people who have been detained there, 680 have been returned to their home countries or resettled in countries that were willing to take them—in all, 57 nations. The majority have gone to Afghanistan and Saudi Arabia. Last month, the prisoner population dipped below 100 for the first time since the facility opened.

SnyderTalk Comment: King Abdullah of Jordan’s recent visit to meet with the president probably involved horse trading to see what Jordan wanted in exchange for taking control of our Gitmo problem.

That’s good for us.  Jordanians are far better equipped to handle terrorists than we are.  Those who think the terrorists are moving to a safe haven where they won’t be tortured have it all wrong.

Jordan knows how to deal with terrorists because they have been doing it for a very long time.  They understand what happens when Islamists are coddled.

It won’t be long before the terrorists will long for Gitmo.  The afternoon soccer matches, the good meals, and other amenities that they received at U.S. taxpayer expense won’t be available to them in Jordan.

I wish we were on better terms with Egypt.  They are very good at handling terrorists, too.  We are not.

Hopefully, the next president will have some common sense.

I just wish President Obama would stop using the phrase “values we stand for”.  The values he stands for are not my values.

If you are a regular SnyderTalk reader, I don’t need to elaborate.  If you aren’t a regular SnyderTalk reader, you should be.

See “Migrants find doors slamming shut across Europe”.  Finally, the Europeans are waking up to the problem they have inflicted on themselves.

Reducing the flow of “refugees” will retard the immediate threat, but their problems are just beginning.  The genie is out of the bottle already.  Once he’s out, getting him back in is very difficult.

1: Attila Somfalvi—Head of Conference of Presidents: Anti-Semitism in the US on the rise:

Three-quarters of American Jewish students say they witnessed or experienced anti-Semitism on a campus, American-Jewish leader Malcolm Hoenlein told Ynet on Wednesday.

“It’s not Europe yet, but (anti-Semitism) is definitely on the rise,” said Hoenlein, the executive vice chairman of the Conference of Presidents of Major American Jewish Organizations, which is held this week in Jerusalem for the 42nd year. “That’s something we have a collective responsibility to address.”

Despite that, Hoenlein said ties between Jerusalem and Washington remain stable. “America has one reliable ally, one ‘aircraft carrier’ in this whole region that it can count on at any time, where it can preposition a billion dollar in equipment and it’ll be there in six months,” he said.

He disagrees with assessments that the relationship between the two nations has reached an all time low. “We tend to glorify relationships in the past,” he said. “We always had these moments of tensions, but the fundamentals of the relationship are really what’s important.

2: Judith Bergman—Denmark Criminalizes Free Speech – Selectively

Last week, a Danish district court ruled that what a Danish citizen had written on Facebook in November 2013 violated the Danish criminal code.

In response to a debate about the local activities of a radical Islamic organization, Hizb-ut-Tahrir, which works for the re-establishment of the Islamic caliphate, he wrote: “The ideology of Islam is as loathsome, disgusting, oppressive and as misanthropic as Nazism. The massive immigration of Islamists into Denmark is the most devastating thing to happen to Danish society in recent history.”

According to § 266b of Denmark’s criminal code, it is prohibited and punishable by fine or prison publicly to threaten, insult or demean a group of persons because of their race, skin color, national or ethnic origin, faith or sexual orientation.

3: Selcan Hacaogl—A Direct Turkey-Russia Clash Is Growing Risk on Syria Border:

There’s only one major group of combatants in the Syrian war that’s backed by both Russia and the U.S. — and now Turkey is attacking it.

Since the weekend, Turkey has unleashed its 155-millimeter heavy guns across the border with Syria. The targets are Kurdish forces, whose recent advance is a key part of the Russian plan to extend President Bashar al-Assad’s control over Syria. Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan on Wednesday refused to stop the shelling and said Turkey was acting in self-defense.

Syria’s five-year war has turned into a tangled web of proxy conflicts between global and regional powers, with a growing risk that some of them could clash directly. Right now the most dangerous flashpoint is between Russia and NATO member Turkey, which shot down a Russian plane in November. Since then tensions have steadily built as the Assad-Russia alliance — with help from the Kurds — threatens to surround Turkish-backed rebels in Aleppo, Syria’s biggest city.

4: Guy Millière—France’s Relentless Hostility to the Jewish State

On International Holocaust Remembrance Day, January 27, Hassan Rouhani, President of the Islamic Republic of Iran — a regime that denies the fact that the Holocaust occurred and does not hide its intention to commit another holocaust — arrived in Paris for an official visit.

Two days earlier, Rouhani had been in Rome, where the Italian authorities, in a gesture of submission, covered up the nude statues of Rome’s Capitoline Museum.

Rouhani thanked Italy’s Prime Minister Matteo Renzi for his “hospitality”. He did not thank President François Hollande for having hosted him on January 27.

No French journalist or politician mentioned International Holocaust Remembrance Day. French journalists spoke only of Hassan Rouhani’s “moderation” and “openness,” despite Iran’s dire human rights violations. Hollande evoked the rebirth of a “fruitful relationship” between Iran and France.

5: Washington PostUS judge orders discovery to go forward over Clinton’s private email system:

A federal judge on Tuesday ruled that State Department officials and top aides to Hillary Clinton should be questioned under oath about whether they intentionally thwarted federal open records laws by using or allowing the use of a private email server throughout Clinton’s tenure as secretary of state from 2009 to 2013.

The decision by U.S. District Judge Emmet G. Sullivan of Washington came in a lawsuit over public records brought by Judicial Watch, a conservative legal watchdog group, regarding its May 2013 request for information about the employment arrangement of Huma Abedin, a longtime Clinton aide.

6: Washington PostUS-China tensions persist despite progress on N Korea:

The U.S. and China showed no sign of quelling tension in the disputed South China Sea as their top diplomats met in Washington on Tuesday. A leading U.S. military officer told Congress that China was seeking to control East Asia.

But there was progress on another front. Secretary of State John Kerry and Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi said they were close to agreement on a U.N. resolution to punish North Korea after its recent nuclear test and rocket launch.

China has been reluctant to impose the kind of tough sanctions on its neighbor and traditional ally North Korea that the U.S. has been seeking. But an even more pervasive source of strain in the relationship between the two world powers has been over accusations over militarization in the South China Sea, an important thoroughfare for world trade.

7: CNNKurds rescue Swedish teen from ISIS-held territory in northern Iraq:

Kurdish forces have rescued a 16-year-old Swedish girl from ISIS in northern Iraq, according to regional Kurdish authorities.

Kurdish special forces came to the aid of the girl, named Marlin Stivani Nivarlain, near the ISIS-held city of Mosul on Wednesday, said a statement by the Kurdistan Region Security Council.

The statement did not say how long ISIS had held the girl.

8: USA TodayPalestinian children as young as 11 join attacks on Israel:

Amer Salah was sleeping last May when Israeli forces entered the 14-year-old’s bedroom in the middle of the night.

He said he was arrested for throwing stones at vehicles of neighboring Jewish settlers, which he denied, and was jailed with nine other kids in a cell barely 6-feet by 6-feet without fresh air or ample light. “We were not even allowed to see the sun,” he said.

Salah, who was released after 10 days in detention in that crowded cell, is one of hundreds of Palestinian youths under the age of 18 who have been jailed for participating in attacks on Israeli Jews.

The arrests have multiplied since a spate of stabbings and other assaults last fall over Israel’s continued occupation of the West Bank. On Thursday, two 14-year-old Palestinian boys stabbed an Israeli soldier to death and wounded a second Israeli man at a supermarket in a Jewish settlement south of Ramallah. Both teens were wounded by armed bystanders.

SnyderTalk Comment: This is what happens when you indoctrinate children to hate Israel and Jewish people.  Palestinians are very good at that.  In fact, it’s the only thing they do well.

“The glory which You have given Me I have given to them, that they may be one, just as We are one; I in them and You in Me, that they may be perfected in unity, so that the world may know that You sent Me, and loved them, even as You have loved Me. Father, I desire that they also, whom You have given Me, be with Me where I am, so that they may see My glory which You have given Me, for You loved Me before the foundation of the world.” (John 17: 22-24)
